    Unlike other videos, I didn't explain the meaning behind the name Andre and if it has any relevance. Possibly because that's my dad's name, or I just plain forgot! But in essence it comes from the Greek Andreas, compounds of "man / warrior" etc.

    One thing that didn't make any sense to me in Dark Souls 3 was why he handled upgrading your Estus Flask, when that's supposed to be the Firekeeper's job?
    Was he part of a line of Firekeepers?

      Yeah it's one of those bizarre things they never explained. There's no reason why the Firekeeper couldn't have been the one to handle estus flasks in the third game, so far as I can see.

    • @dutchvanderlinde248

      @@SilverMont if I remember correctly, estus shard description reads that it's a shard of the original flask. (I don't remember if it's 2 or 3 that says that). So maybe he's putting your (broken) flask together piece by piece and it just looks complete in animation because it'd be too hard to animate drinking from a broken flask? Estus is liquid fire basically so maybe the flask is kinda like a magic thing that auto fills near bonfire flame? Thus why when a shard is reattached to the flask (assuming the shards are large) you get another estus use. Then again ds3 is a big o ds1 nostalgia bait fest so maybe they just wanted you to have another reason for you to talk to Andre.

    • @mothmantis0708
      @mothmantis0708 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You used Fire Keeper Souls and Humanity to upgrade the flask in the first game. In the second it was switched to Shards and Bone Dust. Bone Dust works the same way in 2 & 3, but it's actually the Emerald Herald that handles the Estus Flask Shards. The Herald is a lot of things, but she's not a Fire Keeper. Hypothetically this could mean that whatever method they're using to graft the shard onto the flask is a learnable skill, rather than something innate like Fire Keepers' proficiency with certain types of souls.

    I like to see him as J.R.R. Tolkien's Tom Bombadil. He isn't exactly a well-known figure, yet everyone knows of him and his business. He is one of the few "constants" in the world of Dark Souls. Although he is, for a lack of a better term, a "Well-Known Enigma" Andre serves a universal purpose in a world where conflict is cyclical, and to survive you must be prepared. Was he a normal person before? Was he a homunculus made by the gods to maintain the cycle of the Age of Fire? I believe he is simply that: a mystery we all know. Even in a world where the world itself is both story and storyteller, no story is complete without some mysteries here and there to spice it up. Sometimes the best mysteries are the ones that are in front of you. Personally, I'm always happy to see Andre anyway, even if to talk.

    I think Andre in Dark Souls 3 is the same as in original one, roused from sleep of death just like Ashen One, to serve once more. Could it be that the petrified smiths that look like Andre were his siblings? Or like you said, Andre was in multiple places. If he was not intended to be Gwyn's firstborn, he is one of the oldest characters in the lore for sure, similar to Slave Knight Gael in that sense. And I do wonder why they made him have lip animation, when there are barely any characters in the series like that?

    Sen meaning a thousand in Japanese is correct, however Sen can also translate to line, war, previous, hermit/wizard and loads more. The ones that make most sense to me are war and wizard. There's a lot of arms in there, lots of armor and cannonballs, that sort of stuff. Then wizard makes sense because the lizard dudes are employed by Seath to bring people to the archives for experimentation I think?
    But in the Japanese version the name is センの古城. セン(Sen) being a proper noun, like the name of a person or place. The の part is possessive and 古城 means old fortress. So it's someone or someplace called Sen, and that's their old fortress.

    What you said about firelink is something that I think makes the most sense. It's there to attempt to bring fire back to the world, but in "reality" (the worlds we fight in) the fire is already waning, and the firelink shrines we see are all decrepit and dark. "You can't delay the natural course of the world" was the theme in dark souls since the beginning.

    Andre is an Illusion, much like Gwynevere was. In the Untended Graves' Dark Shrine, most of the NPC that were in the Shrine at some point, either left (Karla, Cornyx, Patches which became Lapp) or died at some point in your Journey. Irina is found dead in the same spot behind an Illusory Wall, Your Firekeeper is most likely dead at the tower behind where you first encounter the Swordmaster. The
    The NPCs that are in the "current timeline" Shrine, just after defeating Gundyr are, The Handmaiden; a real person since she's found at the future Dark Shrine, Ludleth, Your Firekeeper, Hawkwood (that abadons the shrine in the Way of the Dragon Questline) and Andre the Blacksmith, not Andre of Astora, a fake Andre which is a tool to empower your resolve to Link the Fire. A blacksmith that mysteriously have the ability to empower your Estus. When you arrive to the Dark Shrine, the only thing left in Andre's spot is the Blacksmith Hammer that reads "Metal hammer passed down amongst blacksmiths of the shrine" which indicates he isn't the only bearer, hell, this blacksmith could have a different guise for each Ashen One. The Hammer that Andre drops in DS1, explicitly states that its owner is Andre of Astora. No one makes a reference about him, on either the Past or Future shrine, not even himself.
    Also, Artorias grave was most likely desecrated, his ashes delivered to the Handmaiden, thus why she sells his armor set. This can be implied by the fact that the grave where you find Ciaran's Hornet Ring has the Artorias Sword leaned on its tombstone.
    TL;DR: Read the first four words of the comment lmao.

    He is an interesting character, albiet likely just an old smith who used served a larger role at one point and was brought back for fan service. (a practice 3 used a... "tad" too much.)
    I got lore questions though that I have some ideas on. How did Vendrick get so powerful? As certainly if it was through his powers pertaining to soul, his hollowed form would have been far far less powerful than it is. And if it was a power he got from dragons, then from where does it stem? As not even Midir is as tanky as his naked hollowed form! And Kalameet was a tough opponent, but he didn't take half as much abuse as the Ancient Dragon. Not to mention, you'd figure the Ancient Dragon would be this tanky also if it was an ability stemming from ancient dragons specifically. And wouldn't explain his weakness to the angered Giant Souls, unless it was a soul based ability...
    Honestly, its a pretty confusing topic with many answers. So I figured I would ask your opinion on it.
    Then comes the King's Blessing. An ability he can grant you that basically makes you immune to hollowing. How do you think he hollow? (I think he revoked it from himself so he could die and go hollow.)
    And finally, in Ds2 the dragon based powers feel a lot more varied than the other games. As though they are less biological and more mystical in nature, which I personally like. My question is, how powerful is the ashen mist heart? As it may seem like a silly question. But the ability to go back into ones thoughts and pull out real objects, including powerful souls of bosses and upgrade materials or unique equipment. That seems immensely powerful. If used on the right corpses or "equipment with memories", you could just go anywhere in history and experience any event to acquire anything you feasibly wanted.

    • @UnholyWrath3277
      @UnholyWrath3277 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok so vendrick gained his power my presumably defeating his worlds 4 lords and then building drangleic with aldia. He was intended as his ages chosen one basically until neshandra came and ruined everything causing him to lock himself where she couldn't reach. The king's blessing is probably the fruits of his and aldias lifetime of research into the curse so he seems to have found the theory of how to at least halt the curses spread through the power of the crowns(or those who wore them combined) as far being tanky it's a game mechanic thing. The ancient dragon in 2 was probably made that strong simply to give it the feel of how difficult it would be to actually slay a dragon. 1 and 3 made it feel to easy for what a dragon is supposed to be

    • @hunterotte4085
      @hunterotte4085 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@UnholyWrath3277 I don't know. Beating the world's lords seems to be like the first steps of any undead's journey in all 3 dark souls games, and we never get anywhere close to that amount of power just by doing that or being a chosen one.
      As for the King's Blessing that is fair, and I could see that being the case.
      And as for the tankiness, I don't know. But I get the distinct impression that if they didn't want to imply something with the giant souls mechanic, they wouldn't have bothered with adding the mechanic in the first place as it would be pointless. So I do think his tankiness is a canon thing and not something they added for the lols. So I do have to say I disagree.
      And for ancient dragon, that is fair enough. Although admittedly due to Midir's body resistances he is technically just as, if not more tanky. (I just chose to bypass that nightmare and go Pestilent Mist.) Kalameet feels like he is stronger in the lore than he is in the game, ngl.
      So in short, I agree on some things and disagree on others. But thanks for giving me your thoughts on the matters.

      @@hunterotte4085 np and do remember the player character slays anything and everything he comes accross theoretically he is the strongest thing in the series because they have no ceiling the player has complete control over how strong/effective they are. From slaying the OG lords to dragons anything they all fall to the player character. Of course as will anything it's all opinion which is what makes lore discussions fun. I wouldn't read into kalameet to much as I feel he was limited by the game he was in. If they could have made a midir type fight work in ds1 they would have made kalameet more like that. Also just a tip on midir just hug his face with a lightning buffed straight sword. Roll in between his 2-3 swings then take 2-3 of ur own and repeat. I kill him in a 4-5 minute average on any ng.

    • @UnholyWrath3277
      @UnholyWrath3277 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also good note on the giant souls mechanic I personally took it as his power is also tied into whatever it was he pillaged from the giants upon invading them. Either that or it's tied into his guilt over invading what was actually an innocent race of beings and that weakens him by reminding him or his failure similar to the music box stunning gascoine in bloodborne because it reminds him or his family. That was always how I viewed it at least

    • @hunterotte4085
      @hunterotte4085 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UnholyWrath3277 Ah, that is an interesting note. The gascoine part. But the issue is he is a hollow at this point, and as is stated by the lore they are souless husks devoid of emotion and memory. Supported by all interactions we have with them. So I doubt he is feeling much anymore on the emotional end. But as said, a very interesting thought that could be true as he is very different from most hollows still.
      But your point on Kalameet's fight is fair and something I have always thought as well.
      And as for Midir's fight, I just have issues landing head shots as when I fight him its always off the ground for one reason or another completely out of range. The pestilent mist route takes around 7 minutes, but I just find it to be the safer way to do it personally.

    This made me think of something.. Gwyn has alot of similarities of inspiration from zues, he had many demi god children from his affairs with mortal women. What if gwyn did the same? All the blacksmiths are his bastard half breed children or of the like, all looking a bit like him. Especially since there is nothing told of his wife, perhaps like Hela, she didnt like it and left(instead of torturing them etc).
    Also, Andre is Andrew from its roots, which is a biblical and religiously important name having its own chapters. Dark souls has a history of names having hidden meanings, could be a stretch though.
    There is also evidence of a doorway by his station, and possibly him opening the firelink to lord vessel, he was intended for more.

      . And as for patches surving that long i believe the title patches is associated with a cult of sorts comprised of undead who seek propose this also explains there differing suffixes such as “heyena” and “unbreakable”. @@UnholyWrath3277 I assumed something similar. The Titanite Demons, The "Andres" (some of whom are petrified) and Vamos, I figured all of them were fragments of what once was the Nameless Blacksmith Deity.
      Andre visually is very Hephaestus like, so it's no great leap to connect him to a blacksmith deity.
      Vamos because he is a blackmithing corpse, and of some mysterious "royal line".
      Titanite Slabs themselves also could possibly be part of him or simply "heirlooms" of his because the method of their harvesting or creation died with him.
      Exactly how the multiple identical "Andres" work I'm not sure. Possibly they are a quasi-race like the Titanite Demons (who Andre is found next to), who just naturally become stone when they go through something akin to hollowing. Possibly it's more of a reincarnation, each petrification being another cycle. That would fit how the first one we find is next to a butterfly, making us think of the stone remains being something like a discarded cocoon. Certainly any form of stone based immortality would draw the eye of the Moonlight Butterflies, given they are servants (or at least creations) of Seath.
      Whether the Nameless Blacksmith Deity and Gwyns Firstborn who's name was removed from history and cared only for arms are the same person as well I'm not sure.

    A neat twist for the end of DS3 could have been having Andre become the nameless king himself as they still both share the long white hair of Gwyn's line. It sounds like a stretch as the games are now but would have been something interesting to try and bring more meaning to him instead of just being a throw in for 3, somewhat like Sekiro did with the old carver.
    But I can see why they'd leave that kind of writing for a more focused title.

      Yeah, I think the basic timeline is: Andre was intended to be the first born in DaS1 -> they cut it last minute and left it vague with a few clues -> roll around DaS3 and they put in the proper first born as a boss fight to give us an idea of how a high powered Gwyn could be

    Hmm, well he could be the god of smithing which in the lore he left after Gwynn linked the fire. For he says to the undead in the third game too do it for his (the ashen one) kin and he must serve for his. Seems a bit odd that if he was a simple human he would not just say our kin, instead of making a clear distinction between the two. Also with in the lore Gwynn told his kin to shepherd the humans toward the linking of the flame, if he is apart of the race know as gods than it would be in his best interest too support the linking of the flame. I very well might be wrong he could just be a bearded hobo who is slumming it in a church and fire link shrine.

  • @TheFeri
    @TheFeri 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if the first flame creates alternative realities so more chosen undead=better chance to be ignited again because some of those "chosens" are not doing thier job, like Kirk joined the darkwraiths then left them to help the fair lady and some just running around with gank squads waiting for invaders to make fun of them. Pretty sure Andre is a constant figure made the first flame to help the chosen and when he dies thi first flame just makes a new one.
    edit: also he is the most powerful charester in the souls universe because he is the only one who know how to move his lips

    Something I’ve noticed theory channels fail to mention, due in part because it can make the souls series even more convoluted than it already is, is the fact that many characters are undead and the possibilities that come from that are kinda crazy. Despite being a completely different era, DS3 still has some DS1 characters and the easy explanation is that they are undead...again. Died as an undead just to be resurrected once more. Why does the world seem to have bias for certain characters? Well. It’s mostly just a good excuse for old favorites to return. I will say that it seems pure undead never die, but they do if they go hollow (canonically). So the reason Solaire never returns is that he went hollow in Izalith and died for good. Patches continues to return, as he’s never gone hollow, etc. I haven’t researched this thoroughly enough to prove it but it’s fun to think about.

    • @SilverMont
      @SilverMont  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was fan-service, but for the in-game explanation... well, something to do with reincarnation, with souls cycling back into existence. Or rather, the soul itself never "died" or went anywhere, just the owner came back.
