    Hey GW is my first choice and I was wondering what your Extra curriculars were

    • @imuRgency
      @imuRgency  6 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      MY EXTRACURRICULARS: I did a sport all four years, I started my own business, I held an officer position for my youth group, I had leadership positions at my old job, I volunteered for 2 years at a foster youth shelter, and had a few other volunteer/internship opportunities.

    • @onedirectionUSC
      @onedirectionUSC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Not to just jump in on this but I'm about to finish my freshman year at GW so I figured I could also help. (disclaimer: obviously not an admissions officer, but this is what I feel that I've learned after having gone through this, read about the process, and from what I've gleaned after a year here).
      I had a job starting sophomore year and was really active in debate- I competed for all four years and had leadership positions for the last 2 years. I was also really active from 7th-12th grade in a volunteer position to benefit a low-income daycare. Other than that were just some random things like tutoring and random volunteering and being in National Honors Society. I think that it's less about filling your application with a ton of extracurriculars and more about the quality of your involvement. I was only majorly active in three things (my job, debate, and that volunteer position) but they were things that consumed large parts of my week and that I dedicated a ton of time and effort to. That will really matter to a college admissions officer far more than being able to say you were in every possible student organization your school had, and they're experts in knowing the difference between those kinds of students. This isn't to say to limit yourself in joining orgs, but to limit yourself only to ones you're really passionate about- if you're in 7 orgs, make sure your leadership in one or two of those or how you manage to be super involved in all 7 that you care about really shines through on your applications.
      The students that I've interacted with here on campus are really those kinds of students, which is how I know GW is really good at filtering out those kinds of surface-level-involved students- people are usually peripherally involved in a few orgs but basically every single student has one or two orgs they dedicate all their time to. I don't know anyone who is a part of like 10 orgs like people were in high school, and the ones who are a part of a lot really struggle to be super involved in just a few- some of those people always slip through the cracks, but mostly GW knows how to pick students who care and will make campus better through being super active in a few orgs.
      Boring level stats stuff since I'm a different person than him: 3.65 unweighted, 4.2something weighted, 32 ACT, 1430 SAT. I felt good about my test scores but a little nervous about my grades because my math grades SUCKED and I took a ton of way-too-hard classes sophomore year and got meh grades basically every class. I thought getting C's in math and meh grades my sophomore year were the end of the world- GW is great at having a balanced look at your application and caring about more than stats. No one really discusses high school stats here, but the few people i've had any remote conversation about this with, we seemed to vary a decent amount. If you work hard, show a lot of passion and interest in GW (their essay was a 'why GW?' one and I worked to show that I cared about it). Since it's your top choice, I'm sure your passion will shine through when the time comes!
      I don't need to sell you on GW because it's your top choice, and I swear I'm not an admissions officer or tour guide in disguise, but I love my experience here and wish you all the best when it's time for you to apply!

      Nishant Sawant But the gag is people with higher scores don’t get into ivy leagues all the time. By the way earning one’s way into college isn’t determined by a high test score on a standardized test. I’m pretty sure he earned his way into college by trying to study for those standardized tests and being an excellent, hard-working student! Just because it wasn’t a high enough score in your eyes doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a good attempt. He clearly got into GEORGE WASHINGTON with a 27 that he earned from working hard. He is very blessed!
