      Actually, if you are at capable of writing college level essays or you are writing above average for your grade or whatever you want to classify yourself in, you should be able to respond to most prompts with at least 500 words.

    The most important tips are that your essay needs to tell a story (with sights, sounds, smells, emotions, etc.) and it needs to be specific. You either need to try to pull the heart strings of your reader, talk about intellectual ideas that excite you, or your essay needs to be genuinely funny. That's one reason why it's so important to get other people to read your essays, to see how they react to them.
    The essay can also be a chance to find out very important information that isn't coming through elsewhere. if you're working 30 hours a week to support your family because your dad died unexpectedly, I want to know that to put your academic performance in context.
    Personally, I think "pull the heart strings" essays work the best for elite schools because they care so much about looking for kids who overcame adversity. Try to make the admissions committee cry, seriously. At least one of your essays should be about how you overcame adversity in your life, but should be a *story* about a specific moment/event/struggle/disability (in your personal life) and how it changed you/made you mature as a person. The main purpose of the "overcoming adversity" essay is to show how you *grew* or *matured* as a person, not simply to highlight a struggle. I wouldn't recommend writing about a mental illness you had/have though because (unfortunately) colleges are kind of uncomfortable about having mentally ill students on campus.
    The other essay can be about intellectual ideas, be funny, or another "heart strings" story (maybe a story, with sights, sounds, etc., about your family and a bad event/moment in your family and how you relate to your family members and such, or maybe an inspiring story involving you and a family member). "Family" essays work well, although essays where you write about your ethnicity/culture are very common, so try to make it unique and "pulling the heart strings" if you go the ethnicity/culture route.
    Another type of essay that can be really good is where you mention a *very specific* thing about the school and why that specific thing makes the school a great fit for you. For example, you could mention the university's motto and talk about how it relates to your own beliefs. This shows that you have genuine interest in the university, that you bothered to read up on the university's history. It literally takes 5 minutes to Google information like that, but makes a really big difference.

      Justin C This is such a relief to read! My college essay was centered around an adverse event that happened during my childhood, but I didn’t turn it into a “sob story”. I turned the story around to discuss how that event had matured me and even benefited me in many ways in my future. I‘m hoping colleges don’t think it is generic🤣

It's so stressful, and a lot of it should be done by/before Junior year because colleges general care about those GPA grades and the standardized test scores you took then (although you should always take it more than once, it's best if you do those retakes Junior year).

    My essay was kind of a subversion of the "I Got an A Essay". On my transcripts I had a lot of great grades and then a few honestly terrible ones. I knew they'd wonder what happened and the grades embarrassed me so I kinda just bit the bullet and went into why I got those grades, why it's not an excuse, and why I'll never do it again. I talked about the pressure my family put on me and how I crumbled under it due to my depression that started to flare up in high school. How I just lost all motivation to work in those classes. How much I regret that and how I've grown from it. And apparently it was good enough to get me into my first choice college! I move in on the 7th ☺️

    I kind of get where the Jesus essay people are coming from though. I attended a Christian school my whole life and we are taught that the day we accept Christ is the best day of our entire lives and the most important thing that will ever happen to us. As a non Christian I totally get why it all sounds like bullshit an most people don't want to hear about that, but on the other hand, I also see why someone would feel so inclined to write that as it is very acceptable to write a college essay about the best day of your life.

      it was an incredibly hard time for me questioning whether there is a god. God and Jesus truly change people so yea people do want to write about that stuff.

      @@charzard1000 Exactly! I’m writing an essay for college and I had a moment in my life where it really hurt me and what not. However I see where Jesus used that for good and ultimately led me to salvation and made me realize how desperately I need him to save me from hell! Something I didn’t put much thought into until I went through what I did and realized the sins I was committing. Life is not easy at all but now I found the truth and hope all because of God’s grace! I look back and I see how sinful my heart is and how selfish it is and I see things in a new light all because of Jesus. Definitely did change me.

    The “I got an A/work hard-->succeed” essay is not always cliche. I worked really hard this past semester, but my grades only reflect the result of the hard work. I’m a college senior, but I’d still write this kind of essay if I were pursuing another degree because of the challenges stacked against me, which you don’t see on my transcript. I suffered a death in the family the first day of class in the spring, dealt with grief, working, singing in a demanding chorus, preparing for a competition in the summer, and a summer internship. In the fall, I missed the first week of class because I was out of town to compete in a national pageant, sprained my ankle at the pageant, competed on crutches, and came back to do two weeks worth of work in one. I was bedridden for half the semester, and made a lot of sacrifices to focus on my grades. For me, it was about so much more than working hard to achieve a goal. The sacrifices I made to succeed were more important because they changed who I was as a person. I wasn’t dealt the easiest hand in life, which is another story, but it was this past year and especially the last semester that I fully realized what it means to rise above challenges.

    This was so funny and so true. I was looking for videos for graduate school, but high school videos are helpful too when looking for things to avoid. I've found that being completely genuine is the best way to go. As long as I feel like the letter represents me and sounds like my story - it always works for me. Being genuine (and an individual) really comes across well to anyone reading it.

  • @leahdavis7330
    @leahdavis7330 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    "if you work hard, your grades and test scores are gonna show it. End of story."
    This is not true. There are many situations in which hard work would not be reflected in test scores or grades. Working a job outside of school to support your family, raising your siblings predominantly on your own, or constantly moving like many military families do are three examples of how life outside of school may detract from grades. I think an essay that shows how your life circumstances forced you to work hard outside of school can be extremely compelling. They can also serve to explain that you are a hard working person even if your grades and tests make it seem as if you aren't.

    • @SupertutorTV

      Then write a story about working a job, supporting your sibling, or moving--- those are all GREAT topics-- don't write about studying and then getting an A. :)

    The “I got an A” essay can be pulled off with enough humility and crafting. If the focus is not solely on the “A” but rather you overcoming some type of adversity that results in you getting the A in the end, It can be done well. You want the reader to leave knowing more about you as a person. Not just the A. It’s all in how you present your narrative and tie everything in. However, I do believe since it’s a cliché it’s an essay topic that separates the vapid, one dimensional from the well rounded 3D student.

      I would suggest that you should aim for an essay that would appeal to any school. I got into NYU, but with the same essay that was sent to all of my schools (it was more about a maturing experience/adversity than showing my creative side, although a lot of people have a lot of success with more creative essays! Everyone that I talked to that got into elite colleges seemed to have a very unique essay.) Also, keep in mind that with schools that receive as many applications as NYU, they may put more pressure on GPA and test scores than essays (may depend on the program, though 🤷‍♂️)

    I worked hard in Elementary school still had lousy grades there what do you know? I had to be tutored in reading and math, hard work alone does not always get you there. I did better in High School because I understood more by the time I got there. I also did not get straight A's in High School was a B+ average why would she think I got straight A's? I was best at math and Science. Mostly C's in Physical education with a few B's. Although did get 100% on jump rope, sit ups and Jumping Jacks. I also got a D in Typing which was my worse High School grade. PS I tutored others in reading in math I remembered where I came from.

      I wrote about my love for video games on my college application (many years ago)... I wrote about how my grandmother, who died when I was 9 years old, was actually the first person to buy me a video game, and how much that meant to me. I also wrote about not just enjoying the playing, but the stories that these games told me and how I got to be a part of those stories. You should definitely do this, by exploring how video games specifically relate to your life, especially if that's a field you want to get into.

For example, you said try to avoid academics that’s part of what I was talking about. Then you said if it was about academic passion it’s good which is what I was talking about in my essay.

    I’ve been volunteering at a horse barn for over a year, helping with therapeutic riding lessons for people with disabilities. I was considering writing about this, and how wonderful the experience has been and how it made me realize I wanted to become a psychologist and help people. Is this a “missionary” type essay? I was also considering writing about my love for working with animals and how passionate I am about them. Would either of these work?

    • @ifeellikeiwasborntoloveya6547

      its missionary essay if you only just talk about "what you did", now you need to tell them "why you did" *in details* ofc and not generically, tell them your insights your analysis to the situation you got in, that analysis will make it unique and they will see you for who you are or stuff. make sure that your analysis steams more than just what you do in horse barns or stuff. tell them what you figured out by just dojng those things and make it unique and not just "people suffer so i volunteer ba blah baba blah blah" good luck!!

    Please help! I want to write about perfectionism and how my entire life with every decision I've ever made is to achieve perfection. Yet I've always strived for perfection to impress everyone else. But overtime I've learned that more of what I do should be for myself. And not achieving perfection is okay as long as I got something out of it. Is that okay or not? don't know I've struggled to find a topic. Don't stress out just yet. English teachers and guidance counselors will be at your beck and call to review your college essay before you submit it. At least in my high school they made sure to improve our writing skills so we could write good essays for our applications. Granted most of that occurred during the final year so depending on your schools curriculum you may want to ask for writing tips from your english teachers when you can before you have to write the essay. Another tip is to ask any representatives from colleges that visit your school for advice.

    • @hannahf8882

      Little Baby Owl I think this could potentially fall into the same category of the religious essays very quickly. Like she said, it's fine to mention your personal believes, but you don't want to seem like you're preaching your beliefs to the admissions committee. The reality is that most of the people who read your essay will probably not be vegan, so you want to make sure you are not being offensive. Also, like she mentioned with the religious essays, I would just make sure you have a non-vegan friend read your essay first and see if it makes them feel like you are being judgmental/preachy. (I'm both vegan and Christian so this is coming from the heart!)

    "If you work really hard your grades should reflect that" um people's grades can drop for a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with how hard they're working, some kids have to help out at home, some kids need to work, some kids have learning challenges. This info is great but I feel like it's directed at well-off students looking to sound special.

    • @SupertutorTV
      @SupertutorTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then write about helping out at home, needing to work, or the challenges you face. The "I got an A" paper without this context (which is what many students write) is still going to sound generic. The latter won't and all the situations you mention CAN make for good essays. They are much more interesting to read about than hearing that a student studied and went to a teacher for after school help and then got an A.
