Hotel Parking Lot Stealth Camping

  • I borrowed crazy neighbors Suburban to do urban stealth camping in the parking lot of the Courtyard Marriott Hotel. I blacked out the windows with landscaping fabric to camp for the night. I hunkered down after a quick parking lot picnic of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup! Was an absolute blast.

    When I was a kid, I used to go camping on my grandparents' farm in Texas. They had 1500 acres. They would let me drive the truck way back where the pasture would end and the woods began. The bed of the truck had a shell on it, so it made for great nighttime adventures for a 10 year old. I never worried about anything unless all the cows started running, just in case they knew something I didn't! Good times. Good times.

    I’ve worked hotels my whole life. I’m surprised more people don’t stay at hotels when they do this. Depending on the hotel you can even score a free meal in the morning. Clean lobby bathrooms and coffee.. nobody will know if you are a legit guest unless you look suspicious and come around a lot. If anyone asks just say you’re staying there with a relative

    In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, I drove across the US in a stealth mini-van camper and stayed exclusively in chain motel parking lots. Never had a problem. I've seen other TH-camrs who suggest stealth camping in truck stops, but I found truck stops to be the worst for stealth car campers as there really is no dedicated car parking and us stealth campers really need to stay out of the way of the truckers. With chain motel parking lots, there is an expectation that there will be a lot of vehicles parked overnight in the lot, and there will be many out of state plates on the vehicles. Another plus for chain motel parking lots is that the desk clerks really don't care who parks in their lots as they just work there and, even though they request the make, model, and plate number of your vehicle if you are a guest, I have been told that they never check vehicles in their lot and they only ask for the vehicle information from guests so that if there is a problem, such as parking in a fire lane or blocking traffic, they can figure out whose vehicle needs to be moved.

    • @OMGSHEENA
      @OMGSHEENA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I work at a hotel and you're not wrong. Unless it is a parking pass situation most hotels only ask for the info to figure out whose alarm is going off or to ask you not to block the access ramp to the entrance for example. That said, at my location atleast we do have cameras and we do keep an eye out for anything suspicious. So if you were in and out a bunch, messing with the dumpster or something unusual, we might notice but otherwise we would likely miss you. We usually won't care if you use the bathroom or the wifi either. Getting the "free breakfast" amounts to theft of services tho and I don't recommend it. Some hotels require breakfast tickets and others still would take notice of someone coming inside to get breakfast that they hadn't seen go outside. If you get the right staff you might be able to pay a small amount to get breakfast or they might let you just grab coffee if you're honest with them. It all depends but at the end of the day it's probably easier and less stressful to just go to McDonald's.

      I have slept in my vehicle many of times in truck stops. I park where autos are suppose to go, park out of the way of others who are legitimately just in and out. Never had an issue with being bothered with yet. I even found a website where I can find free camping spots, but usually they are away from civilization or a major highway though. But yeah, I never thought about staying in the parking lot of a hotel/motel though

    • @optimus163
      @optimus163 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The breakfast trick is to enter the hotel and go down a hallway up stairs or use the elevator cruise up to the top floor then take the elevator down to ground floor where breakfast is being served . Front desk people dont really put 2+2 together cause 1. its daytime and no one is watching cameras at this hour 2. you may have brought a bag to your car or gone out for the paper, or whatever. By reappearing out from the elevator you have now put on the illusion of being a hotel guest coming down from your room for breakfast ! the whole trick takes but a few minutes.

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The issue is probably more to do with long term. They won't notice a single overnight stay, but they will notice if someone is there long enough. But vehicles that are all blocked out on the windows can draw attention, and steamed up windows can also bring attention. It is best to at least leave the front seat area windows unshaded, and to only block out the back and side windows, along with behind the font seats. That way they'll just think you have important stuff back there you're trying to keep hidden, like luggage and such. So backseat/cargo area's being blocked off with shades isn't a big deal and best for privacy without being suspicious.
      It also depends on how big the hotel is. A small hotel is going to notice pretty much right away, because they know how many guests they have, and they're also typically not very packed, so it's not so easy to just pull up and blend in. And if they see a vehicle pull up but no one get out, it's going to be pretty suspicious.

    Amazing video Steve!
    I worked night-audits at a Travelodge and to be honest, we really don't care! As long as the parking lot isn't at max capacity, we are understanding of peoples situation. There was a restaurant (Perkins) connected and we always assumed it was a line-cook going through rough times and just needed a place to sleep until his next shift in the AM. Never bothered people camping out in tents/vehicles since they were away from guests and we didn't receive complaints.
    Many nights I'd do a walk-around and "catch" an RV hooked up to our hose+power out back, I was always friendly going up to give them the WiFi password and invite them in to use the pool+showers+gym since I know traveling in an RV can suuuck.
    We work hospitality so we want to be hospitable, no worries hiding out on hotel property 100% !

      @@cjohnson3836 For the hotel I worked at, literally NO measures for parking lot campers, we can't just assume. Only reason I ever noticed them is because I went out for a vape/puff after I got my paperwork done and noticed the extension cord / foggy windows LOL. Thats why so many hotels post signs saying to lock up and that they are not responsible for anything stolen or damaged. For best results use hotels when the lot is half full. The lot being full when it shouldn't be is a red flag and may be cause to look around. Parking when no one is in the lot will just draw attention. Find the happy medium. Most hotel staff aren't paid enough to care even if they see something. The guests on the other hand...

I also add some black pepper, Worcestershire, tabasco for a little bit of heat and finally secret ingredient some caraway seeds which adds an incredible depth to the flavor. you can also cube up some other kinds of cheese and throw it in the soup Swiss cheese or Muenster are good , because you wind up with these chewy, gooey chunks of cheese in your soup.

    Finally,...something that I have actually done myself! About 10 years ago, I was turned away from the Canadian border because of some computer glitch regarding my 2 Border Collies that were traveling with me. It was around 2:00 am and I was exhausted, so I turned my car around and drove to the first hotel I could find. They unfortunately didn't allow pets, so we spent the night in the car near a patch of grass and security light. I can't honestly say that we slept much, but it was a stealthy adventure that I will always remember!

    FWIW, red light is great for preserving night vision, so it's good for dash lights and interior light when driving, or even hunting. Blue light is the opposite end of the light spectrum, and it's used widely onstage because people don't see the spill from blue lights. So if you're interested in not being seen, a deep blue light is king. Most LED light sources these days make a pale blue light that isn't ideal for this, but you can buy purpose-built LED fixtures from theatrical supply houses that have filters to cut the longer wavelengths.

    This past summer I camped in my van and used landscape cloth to cover my windows. I got the idea from you using them in your bus. I was in a campground with very close neighbours so I knew they could see whatever I was doing if there was significant light inside. I got one of those fake (battery operated) votive candle from the dollar store and set it on the floor so I could change my clothes, for instance. Checked from the outside, and you couldn't see any light at all. It was enough to see what I was doing however. The landscape cloth is brilliant, though. I mostly attached it with binder clips to the rubber moulding around the windows. So easy.

Fishing pole holders that strap to the hand grips over the doors provide abundant ways to hang lights, fans, even my iPad. And my fishing poles of course! Chrome clips to hang boots clip right to the strap and the hook swings down…. Voila! Those big black paper clips hold really well too. Good thing I have reflective covers on my windows. I car camped across the western US in a 1969 VW all the summer of 1969!
    I had a pillow and an LL Bean blanket. I worked odd jobs for gas and food money. It was a lot of fun and I got Vietnam out of my system.

    I lived in my vehicle when I wasn't on the road, which I was almost constantly. It just made financial sense. Park and ride locations are public property, but you do still need to lay low, police do cruise through at all hours.

    It's Veterans Day here in the US. Which is a day off for some of us in the finance industry. Completely forgot it was Thursday! What a treat.

    I did loss prevention for a number of years... drove all around my state watching people who work odd hours of the night... the best things to find on the trip ... were hampton inns and holiday inns and hiltons... staffed 24/7 with a nice clean well-stocked toilet, and if you wanted a bit of shut eye in the parking lot after a long drive, no one really cared.

    Smart way of heating up food inside a vehicle. And I might actually buy a small rice cooker now that I know that you can cook other things in it too. That thought has never crossed my mind. I could actually use my small air fryer and a small rice cooker like that at the same time on my generator, which is a great idea. I hope the house renovation is progressing well.

    I on occasion traveled with a salesman. Always had an overnight bag with him. He always stopped at hotels to use that restroom by carrying that with him past the front desk. They were cleaner than gas stations or fast food places. Grabbed a cup of coffee on the way out.

    When you showed the early morning parking lot, it looked as if there were a few others in various vehicles that had been camping .
    In New Zealand we have quite a lot of people in vans freedom camping . There's a parking lot in the city that lets them come in after 5pm . They all roll in and set up their place for the night, bringing out fold up tables and chairs.
