    Having been a motorcycle mechanic I have to say that the 'boxer' engine has only one 'debatable' disadvantage when fitted to a motorcycle, that is the width.

    • @gregfowler9835
      @gregfowler9835 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess it would only be debatable amongst non boxer owners. Those who own them know them and understand them,and would never question it.

      The early model B.M.W. motorcycles used a 2 shaft gearbox with the input shaft rotating at crankshaft revs, which, due to the rotating mass of the clutch plate made gear changes slow. In 1955 the 3 shaft gearbox was introduced resulting in much smoother gear changes.

    • @Heavywall70
      @Heavywall70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hell
      I AM wider than that motor
      LOL
      Seriously though
      I ride an r1100s sport tourer and “width” hasn’t ever been an issue
      How close are these people getting to stuff when they ride?

    BMW manufactures other engine designs besides the boxer twins. The boxer engine has been updated many times to satisfy the traditional BMW motorcycle rider but they aren't limited by it. For me I always appreciated the simplicity of the early air cooled BMW motorcycles but like all manufacturers of internal combustion engines they've had to keep up with ever more stringent emission standards as well as stricter noise regulations. All motorcycles have gotten more complicated in order to compete and participate in the marketplace.

    I am about to replace the header pipes for MIVV headers that delete the cat and flap. I will keep the stock tail can. Stock air filter.
    The question is do you need to do a remap for this MOD?
    I see a few people fit the booster plugs, or throttle plug-in device to fuel up low rpm range.
    And some say there is no need because the brains of the bike will adjust to the correct fuel, air mix all on its own.
    Your thoughts on this, or your mechanical magicians expertise would be greatly appreciated so I can rest my mind and give my 2014 1200 GS Adventure the best result. Thanks. Love my BMW.

    Nice animation, I don't think the vertical flow is an important development as for exemple the wet clutch in front of the machine and the dual cranckshaft. I don't think the dry clutch will ever return. It was since the roaring 20 a misfit, too heavy, vulnerableand and expensive to replace.

      @@Heavywall70 My R1100R has 140,000 miles with original pistons and rings. My guess is that the new bikes are not as good. I don't trust BMW. They price gouge. It still cost a fortune to replace all the little stuff that goes bad and I do all the work myself. The new bikes are better engineered to cost even more money. The concept is to finance than trade in every couple years. The biker that buys 2nd hand eventually pays the difference at the service or parts department. The hourly worker is priced out of BMW and has to get a crappy Honda.
