Though already 'biased' towards beemers, have always been struck by the quality, elegance and design of even the simplest machined castings on these things. Harleys and Japanese bikes certainly 'do the job', though everything often seems much more 'crude' and mass-produced, while here it's easy to see how the quality and precision extends to every little well thought-out detail, right down to the guts, all built and assembled with watchmaker-like precision. Well done, thx!
...I've worked on a lot of the M10 and M20 engines and it's always interesting that BMW uses the same type of engineering , tensioners etc , I wouldn't be surprised that some parts from the bike are interchangeable ... M20 and M10 are very similar and easy , fun almost intuitive
The weak link in bmw airhead engines are the camshaft followers. The ones you re installed are well past their use by date. They will destroy the camshaft and eventually the crankshaft when enough metal is generated.
Hi Nils, Mir gefallen deine BMW Videos sehr gut!
I am using this engine to power a single seat locally made actual flying helicopter in Sierra Leone. Can some one help me with the direction of rotation of this enginr,s crankshaft? Tks
I love the flat airheads but the engines seem so overly complex with all the specialty tools required, sealants, and hard to get to components. Rebuilding a R60/2 engine once was the last time I will ever do that.
Most of what you've seen here is years of experience. To be precise, 12 years of experience with exactly this engine. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a specific book, because it is always important that you like and understand the explanatory style of the explanatory.
thank you for your answer. And sorry for my approximate english. I’m really intersting to make some think like that with cars and bikes, I do some lot of manual work but I really don’t like make thing that I don’t understand. And video tutorial are in 90% case not enough. But, ok, 12 years.. nice work !
Cool video! Rockers were not installed correctly though. The dimple marks on top should face the valve cover (outwards). 3:18 You show the correct way to do it then proceed to install them backwards. ;)

Hi Nils, First at all, congratulations very nice video. I like that you used the original audios... Nice. Just a question, I'm looking a screwdriver with ratchet conector on the top, do you know where I can find it? (0:27 sec) Happy New Year.
Yep, the cam followers belong in the trash bin. Also the rotor of the generator does not appear fresh anymore. And last but not least, there is no need for the paper gasket under the oil filter cover.
Just the sort of video I was looking for👍 just wish I knew how to translate into English. What make of ignition unit are you fitting? And where could I purchase one? Hoping to start on a 75/7 very soon hopefully. Cheers
Hello. Very good video and work. Maybe you can help me! I am assembling my bmw r80gs engine and I do not have the engine tightening. Do you have a page that has them or where I can find them? From already thank you very much, greetings
@@NilsHomann Yeah. Tightening of connecting rods, cylinder cover, engine assembly. It's a bmw r80gs year 85. It's the same as the engine you built in the video.
Sorry for my late reply. Even a beginner in the field of motors could do that! Of course with some prior knowledge in the area of sealing rings, sealing surfaces. It is really not difficult.
I actually like videos like these, where it's just plain regular noises without any obnoxious music over it! Good job!
I miss the obnoxious music. :(
The Mechanic assembling the engine shows that has experience and knows what he's doing Very Nice

No music! YOU ROCK!
Old School: No time saving power tools used...Refreshing. Well Done !
Oh Yeah Definitely

AIRHEAD engine is UNIQUE
thank you for uploading
That is an absolutely beautiful engine.
Again, just brilliant
Wow it's a nice engine
Just like the engine, your video is clean, elegant, and direct.
There is nothing better than a good airHEAD!!!
Thank you so much for this great video
Crazy Engine.
Salaam dari Indonesia
Done my share of H-D, BSA, Triumph and Japanese...Never built a BMW. Seems like such a tractor engine. Nice job regardless.
Nemaš ti pojma šta je dobar motor.
@@Archer28M sounds to me like you don't no what a good motor is...Or have a clue what a fucking wrench is, I have built more motors than you've seen.
It's an art form! Very pleasing to watch.
Complex in understatement for this engine.
Marvellous. Thank you for posting this video. Poetry in motion

Your editing style is incredible. The video and audio are both very pleasing. I wish I could comment in German, I hope it translates!
Thank you very much. I'm working on English translation.
You should replace or resurface all lifters, they showing damage.
Just WOW!
Very nicely done presentation throughout. Appreciate the lack of arm tattoos as well.
A master of mechanic
: )
I'm on mechaniek and i new what you'r doing, but it was very very fast forward. Very nice done.
Well, this guy is no slacker. You can just grab a coffee while he rebuilds your engine in a few minutes :P
Good job guys

nice.. its seem like engine artwork... beauty
Sealant . It's everywhere. Such a beautiful design))
A real proffesional...!
Thank you!!!
Super great!
What was the extra piece you put on before you put the oil pan on???????
Genau das habe ich jetzt gebraucht 😎
Hello Nils. Nice video. What pistonring compressor is that you use, and i also wonder about that white stuff for the gasket, what brand is that
This is filmed in slow motion so non Germans can smell the efficiency
: )
Hahahaha :-)))
Uh couple thangs! Was there an airbox? What started did you put on? What started cover? What about the trans?
nice.
what amazing great work to see 😮
Thanx!
Cool, a pushrod boxer, but I thought the newer engines all had over head cams? Nice sound effects, though.
Nice job great vidéo
Awesome.
Love to see a twin turbo in one of these bikes I don't think anyone has done it

What is the material in the tube you are applying under the gaskets? Thanks!

ive seen dnepr and ural engines inside but this is just so much more advanced, as even with all the modern mods its still not as good

what did you add in the final part? is that an added sensor for something?
This is a light barrier (the interrupter) for the electronic ignition.
I never saw the crankshaft go in.
