My mother tells me that they all left their prams parked at the front door of the town's department store. When a baby started crying the women would pass the word around the store, ie baby with the green blanket needs seeing to. It was a great system. We were often put to sleep outside, parked at the doorstep. My mother, a nurse at the time, believed the fresh air was good for the baby, as many did.
I knew a woman who was kidnapped outside a shop by being taken away in her pram. That was in England. She was returned to her family and loved telling the story.
Yeah it was the in thing. I was left outside too & said I was Paul McCartney's lovechild & before I knew it I was surrounded by pink prams & I didn't have a clue what to do next!
1962 & the Beatles approx have just started Please Please Me. Come mid-1963 it's Beatlemania & let's see if Corrie gets hip! I Edit - it has, Dennis has a Beatle early hair cut & Elsie has a Beehive & that '63 wedding ep young guy playing guitar in the first early collarless suit. Come '71 shoulder length hair..
Apparently Jean Alexander's in the next episode, 190, making her first appearance as a landlady Mrs Webb, 2 years prior to Hilda, does anyone know if it's available, I'd love to see it? Thanks x
I'm really freaking out here because I just recognised the Inspector in Coronation Street ( October 03 1962 ) as the butler in that horror film with Jack Nicholson in The Shining which is still the most terrifying film I have ever seen .😈😈😈😨😨😨😨
🇬🇧 Its quite true, most mothers left babies in prams outside their homes, out in the street & outside shops! Most people passing always glanced into a pram to speak to the baby, coo-ing to it & soothing a crying one. No one ever thought about anyone taking a baby in a pram! It was vertually unheard of! My mum left me out in an open courtyard in a race court park Where we lived with my grandparents as my grandfather Was the Stable manager. Not when the races were on of course but fairly open to all & sundry of the race course & stable staff. The only guard i had was our Alsation dog who never left my pram & wouldnt let anyone except my parents near me! This was in 1954 to 56 I was always safe. People left babies out come hail rain or sunshine It was thought to be beneficial to the child to have plenty of fresh air. It makes me wonder why babies & little ones were perfectly safe back then? Why things began to deteriorate & parents became aware of the dangers from strangers when Before it was so much safer Why did people begin to snatch babies in prams or abduct children? Sad state of affairs Even grown adults fear being out in open areas these days. Regards 🇬🇧👧
When Annie (rightly) said it wasn’t Harry’s fault, what did Len mean when he came in and said “Who’s fault isn’t it, then?” Surely he didn’t mean it WAS Harry’s fault, but it sounded like that!
@@Sarah-z1f6c I read it was her in a book I’ve got. Don’t think she had any connection to the soap before, but she was a random woman who walked by Gamma Garments, saw Christopher, and took him to ‘replace’ her baby-which, as mentioned, had died.
Lovely coach built prams in those days.

Would love see the next episode..8th. I just read the synopsis and it said Jean Alexander plays Joans landlady Mrs. Webb. 😃
This scared me as a kid back then classic stuff at the time

Who’d have guessed Joan Akers’ landlady ( the actress) would become part of Corrie history?
I would love to see it also
Worst decision ever killing Martha to make way for awful Ogdens

Yes they did!! Just found the episode: October 3, 1962 Episode 191 Enjoy!!
When Annie (rightly) said it wasn’t Harry’s fault, what did Len mean when he came in and said “Who’s fault isn’t it, then?” Surely he didn’t mean it WAS Harry’s fault, but it sounded like that!

Florrie wasnt a daft as she looked - notice how she didnt let Len take that cup of tea into Lucille on his own
She knew what he was like
@@alberttatlock5237 What rubbish. They are actors. They never existed in real life
@@dianewalker4633 just don't let len go to the swimming pool!
Len flamin Fairclough!
Is the baby ever found?
Aye. Some young woman took him in as he was her own. He was right on the next street the whole time.
October 3rd 1962 episode 191 thanks for sharing.
14:13 some of the wagons? Gypsy wagons??
I reckon its Doreen Akers?
It was Joan Akers, yes. Her child had died at just three weeks old, which is why she took Christopher.
Liz Bryant who’s she?

I wish someone could tell me the ending.. :)
Elsie Tanner called on a woman with a small baby. She went to admire the baby and recognised it as Christopher Hewitt.
@@highmyope-ps2by Yay quick witted Elsie Tanner saves the day. That is great.
marshhen And two years later, the actress of the woman’s landlady appears as a woman who NEVER gets on with Elsie!
