I was working on a painting and saw this pop up so I stopped to come and watch. Been checking each week since you mentioned it in a previous video. Love it! Really cool.

This is the most remarkable piece I have ever seen you do. Everytime I think I can't be amazed...you just go ahead and amaze me. I actually found myself crying as I watched your attention to fine details, bold and subtle shading, color choices and blending...on and on as I watched it not only speak to time as depicted...but how time has helped you refine your skills...to the level that all of your creative geniys can fully be expressed on canvas. I truly hope your gift is being recognized all over the world. THE END of my book for today.
Thank you Michelle!!! I'm so glad you like it because I love painting stuff like this. I do tons of these small studies that are kind of surreal or fantastical, but I don't know... Imagination meets symbolism with a whole lot of talent and skill thrown in! Mind blowing (is that appropriate?) I really like the detail and beauty of the hourglass. With the red sand, of course and the sky is something to be proud of… I’ve always liked the sky in paintings myself. Awesome!

Thank you Kelly! Advice about developing imagination... Well, I guess symbolism plays a big role in my process. This painting was all about time so everything corresponded to that concept i.e. hourglass, clock, candle burning, skulls, sands of time and so on. I sometimes will think of a saying. For instance "I have a hole where my heart used to be" and think of what that might look like as a visual representation. That's how I came up with the "Hole Again" painting. I could talk for hours on this subject so if you ever want to brainstorm with someone, feel free to email me at lydiabroderickfineart@gmail.com

😅 I am only 4 minutes into the video with 8 screen shots of... that! I want THAT VIBE in my life😅. Of course, Ms Lydia, you will take this piece to AMAZING, I know. For me, the question is, how far do I want to go? Do I stop because of fear, or because I am actually pleased with where the piece is? For you, Ms. Lydia, my question is... do you ever get partially through what you "planned" in your mind and decide, this... is done now? Thank you for sharing your amazing creativity.
Thank you!!! In answer to your question... I usually have to stop myself and step away for a bit and come back with fresh eyes. My inclination is to keep going and sometimes it's not beneficial to the painting. My perspective changes when I focus on something else for a bit. This painting had a lot of components and symbolism, so I kept each section almost separate, like it's own little painting to make the whole. This is long winded (sorry). There's always a few moments where I say "I think this is finished" Sometimes it's true. Sometimes not so much.

Very cool art, Lydia. I love the crow! Please explain why you tone the canvas with burnt sienna? I am just learning acrylic painting, every tip helps, thanks!
Hey Cynthia! There are a couple of reasons for toning the canvas. 1) it's easier to see your darkest and lightest colors because you're not painting on a pure white canvas. So you already have a mid-tone there. 2) Acrylic tends to shrink a bit as it dries and you get these little white specs from the canvas peeking through. Toning prevents that.😊 Hope that helps!
