Surrealism Beyond Borders Virtual Opening | Met Exhibitions

  • Nearly from its inception, Surrealism has had an international scope, but knowledge of the movement has been formed primarily through a Western European focus. Join Stephanie D’Alessandro, the Leonard A. Lauder Curator of Modern Art and Senior Research Coordinator in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Met, and explore this exhibition, which reconsiders the true “movement” of Surrealism beyond boundaries of geography and chronology-and within networks that span Eastern Europe to the Caribbean, Asia to North Africa, and Australia to Latin America. Including examples from almost eight decades and produced across at least 45 countries, Surrealism Beyond Borders offers a fresh appraisal of some of the collective concerns and exchanges-as well as historical, national, and local distinctions-that will recast appreciation of this most revolutionary and globe-spanning movement.
Learn more about the exhibition at www.metmuseum.org/surrealism
The virtual opening is sponsored by Di Donna Galleries and Phillips.
The exhibition is made possible by the Barrie A. and Deedee Wigmore Foundation.
Additional support is provided by the Placido Arango Fund, the Gail and Parker Gilbert Fund, Alice Cary Brown and W.L. Lyons Brown, the John Pritzker Family Fund, and The International Council of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
It is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate Modern.

I don't know about that.... I'd bet that some if not many of the artists represented would not fancy being recontextualized to serve this weird "internationalist" and politically correct narrative. This pathetic fad has to end.

Funny how interpretation changes over time. This presentation seems largely concerned with identity politics, while leaving out the surrealists' critique of capitalism entirely. At the end of the day, this approach tells us more about the postmodern world of today than it does about historical surrealism.

isn't it quite the coincidence that curators always and I mean ALWAYS try to add a globalist or international thread to an exhibit? Why would that be... I wonder

You should work on inclusivity and lifting off ‘vaccinated visitors only’ entry because everyone has the right to practice medical autonomy. I am still waiting on my bank to receive the refund for the museum admission I had paid for online.

Yes you have every right to medical autonomy. The requirement is to protect people at risk and prevent the spread of the virus. I'm sure you feel empathy so I hope you also care about protecting people.

@@reverandgreen5801 you’re reaching. One would have to be in your face and exchanging bodily fluids or saliva to get you sick. If the mask you wear across your face protects you then you wouldn’t have to worry because no one is allowed without it. How dense do you have to be to believe that the vx is going to protect you when the data that you trust so much says that you can still be contagious and get sick? You love cherry picking with your research , huh? Pretty phony.
