My mother grew up during the same time. She and my dad loved Jazz their entire lives and Ella was her favorite singer. I had no idea Ella had such a difficult life. It breaks my heart. She still was an elegant beautiful person. 💕

Ella Fitzgerald should be a black historical memory. A monument placed somewhere...that's my personal opinion. Her style was genuine & I admire her image...
    Plain & simple wearing glasses.
Much respect & honor to the sister from the past....

I was one of her visiting nurses for a few weeks mid 80's, and she was lovely & down to earth; always asking about how I was doing and about my kids. She told me stories, including the one about Marilyn Monroe, and sometimes sang a few lines here and there. I remember her calling, "somebody get the doooooorrr..." when I rang her bell. She was upstairs, but her voice resonated throughout the house. She told me, " never mind memorex, I could have broken every glass in the house" ( When a painful episode occurred - HIPPA) She also told me that Bill Cosby sent her a basket of flowers with a card saying, " A ticket, a basket - here's your damn basket". That made her laugh. She was a beautiful soul.

Being black in America was/is difficult at best. But being a black female was a double-bias. Black AND female. I can only imagine the hardships placed upon this black woman who just wanted a place in life. To matter in some way and to be recognized. Good for you Ella. The Light blessed you with a peerless voice and we are all still listening to Ella and shaking our heads wondering how someone could be that naturally gifted. Way to go girl. Life is hard, but you found a way.

In the late '70's I saw an advert for Memorex audio tapes: "Is It Live....Or Is It Memorex?" and she was singing a jazz solo with her voice, I'd never heard that before and I liked it.
Years later I became a singer and would sing licks which were supposed to be played on guitar.
It was Ella who inspired me.

That's never mentioned in Marilyn's biographies on TH-cam. I am guessing Ella would have said her life had ❤️ breaks, but tragic, I am not so sure. I am so very sorry that Queen Ella experienced so many problems but few African Americans led enchanted lives in those days. It always floors me when I find out people as talented and warm as Ella was, were in fact shy and self conscious of their weight and feel they need to always earn their love. It makes sense when I hear her difficult childhood and horrendous adolescence on the streets. That kind of trauma stays forever. I've always thought she was beautiful and that her light shone so bright and far that she was extremely attractive. I just can't get over her being knocked off the plane. The dignity and grace she showed when the white woman asked her if she would sue again. Like as if to say how dare she take white people to court. What a world. But she has gifted us with so much love and joy of having her voice to listen to forever.

The man responsible for bringing Ella Fitzgerald to Jazz Drummer and big band leader Chick Webb was Charles Linton. (Who sang with Chick Webb in the early 1930s) Along with one of the greatest Vocalist and saxophonist Louis Jordan. Mr. Linton was the first guest on my Jazz TV Show in 1994. He was 92 years old and still a very handsome man, singing beautifully. In fact, we did a show together. For my book, he told me the entire story of him bringing Ms. Fitzgerald to Mr. Webb and getting her started. He also talked about her very dire and humble beginnings before she became the first lady of song and the 'Gold standard', I'm grateful. One of the best opening nights I ever attended was in 1975 at the Uris Theater in NYC with Sinatra, Ella, and Basie. Wow! 3 legends at the top of their game.

The woman was ... indescribably incredible. They said you could set your watch by her timing. That’s how unmatchable she was. I was at sea in the middle of the pacific when I heard of her death. I shed tears
