- Probably no one has inspired as many young jazz singers as Ella Fitzgerald, and few jazz musicians have ever been so beloved and respected in the often-incompatible worlds of jazz and popular music. From the start of her career as a teenager singing with Chick Webb, to her immersion in bebop and then a series of albums produced by Norman Granz which established her as a quintessential performer of the Great American Songbook, Ella became known as the First Lady of Song. Her Memorex commercials seen in this clip harken back to a time when jazz musicians were a marketable commodity!
ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s. I was lucky enough to see Ella in concert in 1979 at the University of Utah and then 4 years later in Omaha. She was absolutely wonderful! My parents took me to see Louis Armstrong when I was a young teen and I was able to take them to see Ella so I think we ended up pretty equal! I tried to get my son to name his first girl Ella, but no luck

My ears define greatness as INEVITABILITY...so many of Ella's recordings have that quality: there is literally no room for improvement, same applies to Sarah, Billie, Barbra, and Judy.

Is it coincidental that Ella is occupying the the back of the bus in the Abbot & Costello clip?
I suppose on a directorial level one could say that shooting her coming from the front of the bus wouldn't show the faces of the other passengers, and there is also the shot of Abbot and Costello clinging to the rear bumper. But that's not to ignore the realities of segregation that were present at that time.
She was probably told to get
off the bus, after the
performance
