I thought for sure you ruined the radishes by roasting them just bc I’ve only had them raw and LOVE ‘em! But since you both say they taste like turnips, I’ll now have to roast some myself!😜
Oh to be in a planting zone that you can harvest food already 😂 Radish greens are such a huge part of Korean cooking and I found that out due to the joys of TH-cam…and now a beautiful Appalachian lady is teaching me to bake radishes….who knew?❤😂This platform can’t be beat for the sharing of knowledge. Looks delish Tipper
My dad loved radishes and often had them for breakfast with salt and vinegar. He would eat buttered toast with them. I picked radishes yesterday and thought of how much he enjoyed his radish breakfast.
Tipper, I appreciated when you said you were buttering Matt up with an extra good dinner. He works extra hard & needs refueling more than most. Tipper, You are the cat's meow. Love & God Bless Y'All.
I put a roast in a crockpot and add radishes and carrots seasoned and my family all thought it was potatoes and carrots. They talk about it to this day.
Would have never thought to roast radishes- very interested in trying that! Praying for you all and prayers for Corie and her baby as she gets closer 🙏🏼. ❤your channel!
I love watching you prepare your meals 🥰🥰🥰❤️ I'm with Matt tho. Can't do the radish. Neither can my family but im going to try the roasting method! Thank you everybody! 😊👍🏽
You cook anything in butter and a bit of fresh garlic and green onion, its always good. Radishes are like Lil turnips but sweeter, when roasted. I like them quartered and stir fried w mushrooms and greens, omg its good. Good to see Mr. Matt living his best life. He chose a wonderful partner to share life with and your hard work and talent have allowed him freedom to care for his family and his land with his hands. You two are so blessed.
Ill bet hunting season is already on his mind and this year he will have the time to hunt the way he has always dreamed of. Sleeping out up high and working the range back down collecting the harvest, I'm jealous!
I love radishes ❤ I used them tonight in my papas con carne. Around here, we call them faux-tatoes. Since my husband is diabetic, they work excellent as a potato substitute. Also, parsnips, rutabaga and turnips work well. Roasting them all with the radishes makes a fine hearty dish. I love to add golden beets in there, too. So, so good!
I had to stop watching your channel. I get so hungry watching your cooking that I can't go to sleep. This one caught my eye, and now I can't stop thinking about roasted radishes. When you make cornbread and beans, it just makes my mouth water.
When I was much younger I would take a piece of bread and put my radishe in the middle of it and smash bread all around that radish and eat it. I don't do that now but I did like it .
My granmaw would pick pokesalet and she would get it ready by boiling it three times and draining it then she would cook it with turnip greens! It was so good!
Years ago when my parents visited me in Virginia, as I showed my Dad my small postage stamp of a backyard, he got so excited when he saw what I thought was a giant weed growing against the fence, he said it was poke salad. You can guess what we had for dinner that night. I must admit I didn’t care for it but Daddy loved it, he said it brought back childhood memories.
You’ve probably never heard of Jamie Oliver the British TV chef but watching one of his programs last night he too roasted radishes and they looked lovely. Never in a million years would I have thought of doing that to them, but I will now. Keep up the great content 🇬🇧
I like to use radishes like that in place of potatoes when I make pot roast. I also add a mix of onions and mushrooms. Turns out wonderful in the crockpot.
I've always heard that radishes taste totally different roasted rather than raw. I've never liked raw radishes but from your description of tasting like a turnip, I think I'd love them roasted! Yay!
I wasn't feeling very good today, but watching this video really lifted me up. I love your voice. I'm not Appalachian but grew up down east in NC. A lot of my family had similar accents so hearing yours just sounds like home.
My husband was in the room when I watched this video, so I put it on the big screen. I talk about you so much that he feels like he knows you too. We can't wait to start eating out of our garden. We have had a few strawberries so far. Ya'll have a great week. God bless!
I am about to grabble for some potatoes, love them fresh. I watched you plant potatoes in those grow bags last year, and my husband and I got those bags and grew potatoes. They grew great in those. We are elderly, and so easy to grabblel out, compared to down in the ground. Our potatoes look good this year too. We watched you get the yokon gold ones and got those to try this year. You show us the best ideas and information. Thank you Tipper.
Boil and drain the Polk salad 2 times, for only 5 to 10 minutes each time. Drain well after the second boil, and then fry for a few minutes with some crisp bacon and bacon grease. Sometimes I add onions too. It is wonderful! No eggs!
My granny loved poke salat. Every year she would send me out to get her a big sack. I also had an older gentlemen who was a long time friend of the family. He would cut up the poke stalk and fry it like okra. I never really cared for it either way but every year I’d eat the first batch with my granny.
The reason a lot of people don't like radishes is because they are so peppery. Cooking them removes that. At 71 I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and I refused their nasty diabetes meds. So that meant a whole diet change for me. I cut out ALL sugar and as many carbs as I could. That meant no more potatoes, bread, pasta, rice ... totally changed the way I ate. But I have found some great substitutes. One of the recipes I found is a hamburger stew that uses the red radishes like you have in this video in place of the potatoes. The first time I made it, I was thinking the whole time that it wouldn't be the same. I was totally blown away because I think I could serve that stew to anyone and they would not know those weren't potatoes. I also use daikon radish to make faux potato gratin and faux scalloped potatoes.
Our family was on the poke lovers side, lol. No boiling in water we just sauted and scrambled the eggs in. All in our 60's now, no one poisoned. We only eat poke as a young plant when the stalk starts showing red you quit eating it.
I grew mustard greens and harvested some to cook. Had them for the first time tonight, they were good. I sauted them with garlic and sesame oil in a bit of water. I wasn't sure how to cook them. Glad they were milder as they cooked as raw they were very pungent. I like roasted radishes, learned about them with trying to lower carbs for health. As a small child with my brothers and father, we enjoyed laying on the floor watching tv with a snack plate my dad made of sardines, smoked oysters, crackers, raw green onions, and radishes. Not so many people enjoy snacks like that these days. As small children, we followed our father's lead on tv snacks.
My Mom fried a piece or two of bacon and then threw in the greens, usually Collards. Then she bought bottles of Pepper Vinegar to shake on. We used that on Pinto Beans with ham hock and raw chopped onion, too. Green beans cooked with ham hock, new potatoes with Corn Bread was another meal we had often. My Dad would mash the leftover cold beans and meat and make a sandwich next day. This looked real good.
I love butter Stewed Radishes. Put radishes in a wide skillet and season well with salt and pepper. Add butter and 1 cup of water and bring to a boil over high heat. Cover and reduce heat to a brisk simmer. Cook radishes until tender when pierced but no further, about 5 minutes.Remove lid, raise heat and boil to evaporate most of the liquid. Serve in the buttery juices with sprinkling of dill.
We love raw radishes but we learned from our son and his wife they’re great cooked in a pot roast instead of potatoes for low carbs. Really good that way too
Victory!! Matt liking the baked radishes. 😊 I love radishes. I eat them raw with some salt 🧂. I made some pickled radishes a couple of weeks ago, for the first time. Nice for a side item. Have a good day! 😊
Hello again Tipper- I am enjoying watching all your videos-current and past. Praying Corie has a safe delivery. The video where you talked about “vomic” made me have to tell you a story. Again, some things you say and do are familiar to me from my troubled childhood and there must be a connection to Appalachia somewhere. When I was in kindergarten (1964) we were in the classroom before the teacher in the morning. I remember throwing up in the bathroom in the class and the other kids heard or saw me and when the teacher came in, they told her I’d thrown up. I’d never heard that term and I quickly told the teacher I’d “vomiced”- the only thing I’d ever heard it called at home. It must have been just as strange to them as “throwing up”was to me. I’ve lived my whole life in NJ and don’t say “vomic” anymore. But I do and always have loved tomato sandwiches in the summer. Hope you have a blessed day.
You should have a raddish meal variety contest to see which mat and the girls would like! I still recommend dicing them and put them in scrambled eggs with some onions and other veggies you like 😊salt and pepper is all you need.
Never had a roasted radish but I'm gonna have to try that! I love turnips and radishes raw so this will be an interesting treat!! Thanks for trying that Tipper....glad that you have a new item for Matt to enjoy.
Tipper, you can also boil radishes and use them in place of potatoes in soups/stews!! They're great in chicken soup and absorb the flavor in the broth when cut in half! You can also quick pickle them like red onion, sliced thin and used in salads, sandwiches, and on tacos! You can also thinly slice apples, pears and radishes, toss and leave in a bowl overnight and they'll sweeten up and stay crisp, then add some greens and you got a nice fruit salad and even throw in some combination of nuts, cheese, and balsamic vinegar!
Tipper I always plant radishes 10 days apart from the last Radishes !!! You can boil them roast them fry them like potatoes !!! I even make potatoe salad out of some of them !!! Check to see if you got some onions to pull for the salad !!! Leaves of radishes I have stir fries or just salads for myself with dandelions for pretty looking !!!
Have you ever had a grilled pimento cheese ? Oh my I was in Williamsburg Va. and we ate at an old drug store fountain. They had that and I tried. It. Oh my I’ve been grilling them ever since.
Try a dollop of pimento cheese (we call it Palmetto cheese) on fried green tomatoes... Low Country, Gullah/Geechee Nation flavor; I call it heaven!!! Makes me drool thinking about it.
I love radishes raw in my salad or just to snack on. Everything you pull out of your garden is beautiful. A couple of years ago I planted 30 tomato plants and if got so hot (110°+) that every one of them died. Now my arthritis is so bad I just go to the farmers market. I'm so jealous!
Anything would be better than untoasted white bread! It would be so much better on a hearty whole grain bread. I don't understand why anyone continues to eat that awful white bread.
I got so excited waiting to see if Matt would like the Roasted radishes, now try giving the girls and Austin a try. Maybe you should plant a mess more. I’ve got to give that a try🌻
Great and enjoyable video, Tipper! I'm like you about the radishes. I fixed some roasted last year and they do taste like turnips. I've got something else for you to try, too, another radish dish. Slice them up like you are slicing potatoes and pan fry in oil of your choice and season however you like. Cook till tender and slightly brown. They are just like a skillet of fried turnips sliced. Very good and tasty. In Arkansas, and specifically at my house, we prefer turnip greens and mustard greens. I will eat polk salad, but my husband doesn't care for it. We are not kale eaters, but I have cooked Swiss chard, and it is good. We like new little potatoes in a homemade cream sauce, peppered well, but I haven't made that in years. Try the fried turnips this fall and fried radishes if you get a chance. I bet you will both love them! I'm getting ready to fry us up some green tomatoes this week! Take care, Nancy from ARKANSAS. 😊
Hi Nancy! I am your neighbor in Texas. 😊 I love turnips but have never heard of or had ’fried turnips.’ That sounds delicious to me, and I am going to try it. I am also going to try the roasted radishes as they are too spicy for me when raw. I will also try them fried. Blessings from Dallas! 🙏💜
Happy someone shared about the radishes. I don’t like them, but my husband will make a meal off of raw radishes. I’ll have to try roasted, as I love turnips. Thanks for passing this along. Those were some pretty good sized potatoes-it doesn’t seem like they’ve been in the ground too long. Praying y’all have a great week and are enjoying grandson #2 before long.
Hey Tipper! I named a kitten after you today! I've been fostering some babies from a colony and one has a snow white tip on it's tail. Out of all the cats in this cat family, none have EVER had this! The name choice was obvious! ❤
I grew up in Louisiana and Poke salad was a seasonal thing. My Papaw would pick the Poke weed young and we would Sautee it in bacon grease and crumble bacon over it. It was delicious!
There is a poke salad festival in Gainesboro TN. They have it every year and they do serve poke salad. The roasted radishes, I'm going to have to try. Love how you threw everything together for at delicious meal. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for cooking with us and sharing your recipes Ms. Tipper! I've never had radish greens but I do love radishes with salt, maybe a little dirt on 'em too! Lol! Hope Corie's doin' alright, Granny too. Sending y'all love from Memphis!~

You could always let one of the plants go to seed on your radishes to see if having one plant will help you with the squash bug problem.
Seeing those radishes reminds me of my father he loved them he's been gone 35 years keep gardening

Smother-fried radishes are really good too. Cook them just like you would smothered potatoes.
So fresh, I’m jealous, you walk out your door into a Farmer’s Market. ❤
I like to slice my radishes and fry them in butter in a cast iron skillet, until soft. They are delicious that way and it takes out the peppery taste.

Go Arkansas, Wooo Pig Souieee!
Sounds great!
Add some carrots, garlic and onion to that pan..... yummy
That is so sweet! 😊
I haven’t watched in a while, still enjoy your videos. I love radishes and turnips made all ways
Thank you 😊
I’ve never had baked radishes or fried radish greens!! They look delicious.
I grew up in Louisiana and Poke salad was a seasonal thing. My Papaw would pick the Poke weed young and we would Sautee it in bacon grease and crumble bacon over it. It was delicious!
I can feel the love you put into this meal.
Also a great tip for roasting radishes.. I never knew!
Thanks for that. I'll be roasting radishes in the future!❤
