About a year after my Momma was diagnosed with dementia i was cleaning her room and found a tiny little book on the floor under her bed. She wrote in it things i love doing and wish i could still do. I can't no more because to don't remember much most of the time. Cooking, singing with all 8 of my children, swimming, ice skating, watching tumble weeds on the prairie, visiting my pa and ma but i will be with them soon, arguing with papaw ( my daddy ), playing in snow drifts and the list goes on and on. I sat on her bed heartbroken for her but was so glad she was still having glimpses of memories. I went down stairs and asked her about it she told me she just wanted to write it all down for when she forgets. We lost her about 6 months later. I now have that little book and it is an absolute treasure to me
Our churn sat in the kitchen corner with a white cloth over the top. It was my job to churn every Saturday and make buttermilk and butter.bwe had a wooden paddle that I shaped the butter with. No buttermilk or butter like that. They were so good! Mama would make her delicious rolls and to put that butter on one was heaven. Later on mama made kraut in that churn.
The written word is so very important. As a retired English teacher, I always preached to "Turn off your TV. Tune into your library." I have Parris' book. It is still available, but you will pay dearly. Remember, "Readers are leaders." Teach your grandkids the value of books. This was just lovely. Thank you!
I'm 67 (female) and still carry a small knife. Always have as long as I can remember. Pleasant video before the 4th July. I think it was appropriate. Thanks for sharing Tipper!
Hi Tipper, I enjoyed this so much! Like you I am sentimental, even hearing a Whippoorwill can bring me to tears, it’s such a powerful memory of sound from when I was little. I just turned 70 and the time I grew up in was a sweet time. Lightening bugs, playing in the woods, a little country church and dinner on the ground, most young people today don’t know what that is, the smells of my mama cooking. It is indeed bittersweet and sends me down memory lane to dwell there a while if only in my memories, of which I’m so thankful to God to have. After you read John Parris I went on Amazon and bought the book, can’t wait to go down his memory lanes! Though I don’t live in the mountains I love them, I didn’t have the mountains but I had the woods! Thank you and God bless you and yours. I really enjoy your and the girls videos. 🙏🏻
Nothing tastes better than a cool drink of water out of a tin dipper! My little Granny had one hanging by the sink in the kitchen....I too have one now.....hanging in my bathroom just for looks....I miss that little Granny...
This touched me so much ❤ almost every video you do seems to bring back a flood of memories and emotions from my childhood (and in my mind, I’m talking to you telling what I’m feeling )❤ I’m 72 lived in Florida for 20 years now, but I will always be a country girl from the hollows of North Carolina in foothills of Blue Ridge Mountains …I was 52 when I met my wonderful husband and moved here, but I dare say not anybody that grew up here knows much of the old ways you speak of and still do….my friends are amazed how I cook, fried taters in bacon grease, pintos & cornbread…I recently did fried cabbage in bacon grease and they really loved it and took all the leftovers home…lol..sorry Tipper, I didn’t mean to write a book… Prayers for Granny and for your “growing family “❤ I may watch this one over a few times just to listen to you read that again
Tipper, I enjoyed the nostalgic visit this evening. Sometimes I feel like that too. I'm remembering the fun times swimming in my grandparents farm pond and cooking hot dogs on a stick and marshmallows on the 4th of July. Hope you all have a blessed 4th. God bless you and your family and God bless America 🇺🇸 🙏 ❤️.
missing seeing and hearing Mat in the last few videos...hope he is well...I so enjoy listening to you read especially nostalgic things or stories full of old times and old ways...it makes me long for the days gone by but if I spend much time thinking it makes me sad and that isnt a good place for me to be because I live alone so no one here to snap me out of the duldrums....please be mindful of how much time you and Mat are out in the heat--no amount of food or flowers is worth having a heat stroke continued blessings on each one of you
I took a trip back to my hometown, not far from you, and showed my daughter my grade school, and the houses that I lived in growing up. I was so glad to see that all but one of them was still there!! It did my heart good, to be able to step back for a short time, into my childhood. Such wonderful memories, and I was so glad to be able to share that with my daughter. 🙏🏻🥺
@@CelebratingAppalachia the house that was missing, was the one where my grandmother lived. I remember that front porch, with a swing, and neighbors walking up to the porch to talk to my mom and grandmother. We later lived in that house. The one thing they couldn’t take away, was the creek that ran past the back yard. We took pictures of all the houses. I wouldn’t have changed my childhood, in the south, for anything.
I have my grandmother’s diaries dating back to 1938. A lot of the same feelings about the way life was lived back then compared to the way we live today. I think they had much richer lives.
My grandparents drank Postum when I was a child so the thought or it takes me right back to wonderful mornings in their sunny yellow kitchen. I may have to purchase some, as I am also unable to drink coffee. Miss Cindy seems like she was a wonderful lady and contributed significantly to your life. You and your family are a blessing to us!
Please don’t apologize for reminiscing. It’s those memories that have formed us and make us who we are. I enjoy hearing about your family, neighbors, a simpler way of life. Your memories help trigger mine. Thank you Tipper. 😊
We drank postum most of my childhood Tipper. We were very strict vegetarian healthy diet. But, my mothers family where I lived til age 7 and every summer and holiday forward ate pork, beef, poultry, dairy from cousins, cow, etc also I drank non homogenized milk. Postum is a comfort drink for me. P.S. I think I mean straight from the cow. Not pastureized
I used to drink Postum with my Grandma Margaret. Coffee upset her stomach. I really enjoyed it. It had the same taste as coffee for me. Thank you for another great video, Tipper. It's always fun spending time with you and yours!
I know my great grandma had postum in the kitchen maybe she drank it as coffee, I’m 80 now so I have forgotten a lot but you seem to make me remember. Thank you Tipper
Yes a beautiful writing from John Paris. I live in Alabama and we do still have cake walks, when we have church events or festival or Halloween party's at schools.
I just love you, Tipper! You always seem to post just what I need to hear when I'm feeling kinda down. And your voice is so soothing to my troubled mind. I know it's after 4am on July 4th now, and this has been a rough day for me. I fell in the hall about 2am on July 1st & it was a struggle to get up to say the least. Thank God my son was here and heard me fall and I finally managed with his help & the grace of God to get up and get to my bed. The weird thing is that I was using my walker & had gone to the kitchen with it to get something to drink. Then yesterday, I was crying, missing Larry, and decided to drive to the Cemetery. I stayed quite awhile there, watching the solar lights on several graves come on. It was beautiful and peaceful. I was coming up the road to my house and stopped by my great-niece's to chat for a minute and see my sweet 2yr old great-great nephew! He is adorable! As I went to back out of the driveway, I don't really know what happened, but I tried to brake & my car just backed into the bank on one side of the road and spun me over into the ditch on the other side! I was able to finally stop & put it in gear to come on up the hill to my house. It jarred me pretty bad, so I'm in a lot of pain and not able to rest. You know you're old when you go to bed smelling like ben-gay! Lol! I don't know how bad or if I messed my car up. My son tried to check it but it was too dark, so we'll look it over later today. I feel I should've just stayed home! But it had rained pretty heavy right after I decorated his grave and I wanted to make sure everything was ok. It was, just his name tag had come off the flowers somehow. It was still laying right close to the flowers so I was able to fix it back, hopefully tighter. Thank you so much for seeming to always "be there" when I need you! Little Woody is so sweet & Corie just glows! It will be awesome when he & Ira can get out and play together! I know you & Matt & Granny are going to have a wonderful time watching them grow! Katie is just amazing too! I pray God blesses y'all immensely and sending hugs to all from VA!! 🙏❤️🩹✝️
Bless you Debbie!! I hope you get to rest up and the soreness will go away. I know you miss Larry so much. I'm still praying for God to comfort you!! We appreciate all you do for us!!
Tipper, I grew up reading John Parris’ columns. His books are things I treasure, reading again and again. Am going to pick up some Postem at Ingles and give it a try. Coffee just doesn’t sit right with me as I’m aging. Thank you for this reading. Enjoy your family and garden this 4th of July weekend 😊
My family and I watch your channel from New Brunswick, Canada. We just live you and Matt. And we watch your girls channel too. You are a dear sweet lady. God bless you and your family.
This video just popped up and I’m so glad it did; I haven’t been able to drink coffee for a year now, long story🤦♀️ and I really miss it! Thank you for this video and information; I remember now that my grandma liked Postum!! Can’t wait to order some!
I’m 56 and remember cake walks! My Mom loved them it seemed like she’d always bring home a couple cakes or goodies when she’d do a cake walk! At a church carnival recently they had a pickle walk for the kids! I thought that was cute! Thanks Tipper for a great video 🎉❤
Oh my. Tipper I can’t have coffee either because it sets my heart racing so I drink Postum too and I love it. I think it has a touch of molasses in it. It’s so good. I love the nastalgia too. I just loved the book about quilts. I learned how to sew but never got into quilting. It might be a new adventure. Thank you for sharing the stories of Appalachia. Helps me to drift back and remember my family from NC and TN area near the Hiawassee Dam.
Tipper, I finally got to ordering your cookbook and I can’t tell you how pleased I am with it and being able to treasure these recipes and pass them down in my family. I’m not from Appalachia but I grew up eating some similar meals especially anything garden related. Your home and style reminds me so much of my growing up I almost feel like I fit right in. I’m probably about the age of your daughters too. You have given me a source of joy I look forward to on a daily basis now, thank you Tipper!
Growing up we were brought up on Jesse Stuart. His books are about Appalachia in Kentucky. New Harvest is the last one I read. I enjoyed his books more as a adult. You know how kids don't appreciate things until later. Thanks for your reading from John Parish.
At 70 there have been so many changes in my lifetime that I do cherish the moments a memory suddenly pops to mind. Some are sweet, some are sad but I love that all touch my heart in different ways. Thanks for reading us something from John Parris. Thanks to you he has become a favorite writer to me.
❤❤❤Tipper, i had that same Vita-mix. I loved it. Times changed. We moved, started Rving so I had to get rid of it. It was a work horse. This drink that you just made would be good made into a popsicle like the Outshine bars you eat. Looks delicious. I will have to try it. Great story.
There is a country music song that says" I miss back when". I like that song, because I do too. While I don't remember everything the song writer does, I miss mostly, listening to my older relatives conversations, and lots of childhood things. Those were the good times.🙂❤️🙏
I had a chuckle when you said about how congregations used to say amen Tipper. Last week I paid a visit to Andrew Jackson's family home in Boneybefor here in Carrickfergus, and was lucky to get to hear the tour guide this time. One of the things he talked about was when Jackson was nearing the end of his life he would spend more of his day with his pet parrot. Everyone thought he was losing his marbles. At his funeral his Parrott was in attendance at the service. The minister gave a great oration, and every time the congregation said amen, the parrot would swear loudly. So much so that it had to be removed from the proceedings! Jackson obviously wanted to have the last laugh, even at his own funeral! Another item on display was the family bible, the tour guide mentioned the fact that of all the English speaking immigrants to the U.S. the hill folk were the most literate, as they were taught to read by their mothers from the bible at a very young age.
Tipper, I've had the Postum drink. Delicious and good for you! I will have to start making the drink and drink it daily! My husband's great aunts, aunt Mary and aunt Tiphaine ( southern belles, RIP) used to make it during the summer months back in the 90's when we visited. They lived in Chapel Hill, NC. Speaking of WW ll food shortage, it was during WW ll, in Italy, that the famous Tiramisu cake was created. There was a shortage of flour and eggs for baking cakes or cookies so the ladies of the house used stale lady fingers soaked in coffee, sugar, and cream from their cows milk to make pudding for the cake. The story goes that the creator of the Tiramisu cake lived on a farm and owned cows. My mother remembers as a little girl back in the 50's, her mother making the Tiramisu. Many decades later the dessert became a hit in restaurants here in America. Love your videos, Tipper! Warm regards. :-)🌹🌺🌸🌹🌻
I remember my Grandmother having Postum in her pantry. I can still remember the pattern of the curtain that hung over the doorway to it. And especially the aroma of that old pantry full of food ☺️ Such fond memories. I think I'm going to check our Ingle's or Walmart out for Postum. Maybe I'd like it instead of coffee. I thought today was Friday when you started reading 😅 The days are flying by for sure. I can't believe it's already July. Have a wonderful evening Tipper. Give Granny a big old hug for me. Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏💕🌄🇺🇲
I haven't thought about Postum in years. My dad started drinking it after he gave up coffee. I don't remember ever tasting it, much less drinking it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
So glad that this video popped up in my feed! I am going to buy a jar of Postum! It will be delicious! I also am Sentimental, loved your video! Thank you, Tipper... Be Well & Be Safe! 💗🤗💗
My Mom drank Postum at times. I tried it, but it couldn’t compare to real coffee. Now that I’m much older, I might like it. I’ll have to give it a try. Your Frappee sounded and looked delicious. Enjoyed the reading. It was nostalgic for me, for the things I remember from my childhood and the things my Mom told me about her childhood. Thank you for sharing❣️
Up here in the northeast, we had a restaurant named Friendlys. They've mostly closed now but they made a drink called a frappe. Now, up here, we don't use the French pronunciation you use Tipper (we don't pronounce the "E" at the end), but it's the same drink, just made with ice cream and/or sherbet, and it was delicious. I remember Postum from my childhood when there was still a shortage of coffee due to WWII. Yup, I'm an old lady. I love your videos as I've said before. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for sharin the Postum Frappe recipe with us Tipper! My family never grew up drinkin coffee because it's against our religion. However, years ago when I was young, some of us drank Postum. I always liked it but forgot about it as time went on. I'm going to try the recipe. It looks yummy! I also liked the story you read.
my wife had a similar digestive problem. drinking drip coffee most of her life but problem emerged in her late 40s. switched to whole beans, ground fresh daily and she uses a stovetop percolator. boils out the acid, etc. she drinks 2 cups daily and has no issues at all. fresh perc'd coffee makes the house smell great too.
I learned to swim in a place called Cornbread Bottom, which was part of the Kaskaskia River in Illinois. As you might guess, the bottom was as smooth as the crust on top of cornbread.
Thank you Tripper ,made me think about my child hood and all the fun things we did growing up lot of the same as you Happy 4th of July to you all.God Bless ❤
My mom passed this past Wednesday & I’ve been being very nostalgic these days. Love your videos, they remind me of my family a lot. Mama liked watching them before went downhill so badly. Thank you for sharing your family with us. ♥️
Memories provoked! My Dad loved Postum and I now have a jar on my kitchen bar in his memory. Will try your Frappe. As a lad I carried a pocket knife, not a Barlow, maybe a Case. We played a knife game called "Mumble Peg" where the knife tip first touched various parts of the body like finger tips, and then flipped to stick into the ground. A succession of these successful flips would win the game, when first person got to the last body part.. THE LOOSER HAD TO PULL A SMALL STOBB OUT OFTHE GROUND WITH HIS TEETH. Skip Salmon Turkey Bottom Roanoke, VA
I remember my mom and dad trying it once. He went back to coffee with chikory in it. Now that was yuck..too strong a coffee. I bet I would like Postum. I quit drinking coffee. That looked good! Still smiling when I think about those precious babies! Yep...truly blessed❤
What a thoughtful video, and beautiful reading...feeling nostalgic is a good thing. Tipper you used the expression.." feeling a little less." I never heard that but I assume it means feeling not quite like yourself; a little sad.
I enjoyed the John Parris story. Most every boy in school had a pocket knife. We had sense enough to know what it was used for and to not misuse it. It's a shame the way things have become in many ways. Thanks!
When I glanced at the title I just knew it said possum frappe 😯... it's funny how many thoughts can flash through your mind 🤣 Wonderful poem! Thanks Tipper 🤗❤️
When you mentioned the sounds we remember, what immediately popped into my mind was the screech of the spring stretching when you opened an old-fashioned wooden screen door. Stores and houses both had those. That would be followed by the bang as the spring shut the door. Uh-oh, now I'm starting to get nostalgic. I like both your and John Parrish's lists. I definitely want to try the Postum frappe. In the hot weather, I was thinking that a cold coffee drink would hit the spot, but a cold Postum drink sounds even better. My grandma used to drink Postum and when I visited her, she would make me some, too. Mine was mostly milk and was served in my own special little china teacup with saucer. I felt so grown up.
My grandparents, who were Mormons, drank Postum since it doesn't contain caffiene. They did so for years. Made me smile and think of them. Thanks for sharing Tipper😊
I want to thank grannie for her famous tatter cakes . I made them tonight for supper and they were so good. My grandma Ma,ree. R.I.P. Use to make them years ago. So please thank granny for me . big fan of y'all,s girls and all. I'm a little older than y'all and got four kids and four grandkids. You ,& Matt are lucky they live so close. God bless y'all All of ya. I'm from South Central KY next to the Tenn line .I grew up on a dairy farm. And I love the mountains.
I was also diagnosed with IC about 10 years ago. Besides acidic foods, the change of the weather affects me. I know everyone is different. I drink 1/2 caff because just decaf alone wasn't waking me up in the morning. I don't think I ever had Postum but I remember seeing a jar of it in my grandmother's cupboard.
I love coffee and hated the idea of Postum, but never tried it! I will try the cocoa one first since I love chocolate as much as coffee. Thanks for sharing, I need to cut back on coffee because of blood pressure and decaf may elevate high cholesterol, which is also a problem, not sure if Swiss Water Process fixes that, will have to study.❤
Looks delicious!!! Those were the good Ole days. I haven't seen a cake walk here in years. We got some rain but are still really dry. Praying you get some. Yall have a blessed night.
You turned me on to Post-Um, then I found out from my grandpa that my great-grandmother used to drink it! I had my wife try it and she didn’t mind it but I think she’d really like it in a frappe (she’s a Starbucks fiend). Forgot about that Post-Um Cake, think I’ll make that and add it to the dessert table this weekend for the holiday!
I've never heard of postum, but I'll be sure to try to find it! I just remember as a child my daddy couldn't stand chickory coffee, he said it was a bad day in the military when that's what he got... Love y'all and God Bless! Please have a blessed and safe 4th! Next year those grandsons will be toddling or "Tipping" all over ❤️🙏🇺🇲🎇

When you see my🦋🦋🦋 know that I’m showing love and appreciation to you!!! 🦋🦋🦋
Love that!
My family and I watch your channel from New Brunswick, Canada. We just live you and Matt. And we watch your girls channel too. You are a dear sweet lady. God bless you and your family.
Thank you so much!!
Thanks for sharing your recipe and your reading! Loved it! You are such a blessing! God bless
you! 😀❤️
Love hearing these readings. They remind me of things my mom used to talk about when she was growing up.
Me and family used to sat around a fire and drink postum love it ❤❤❤❤
This video just popped up and I’m so glad it did; I haven’t been able to drink coffee for a year now, long story🤦♀️ and I really miss it! Thank you for this video and information; I remember now that my grandma liked Postum!! Can’t wait to order some!
I love his writing! I can’t wait to read this book❤
I completely understand those wistful, nostalgic moments! I find myself having them more frequently the older I get. Thanks Tipper!
I’m so glad you like it! Thank you 😊
Growing up we were brought up on Jesse Stuart.
I always enjoy when you read to us. ❤
You are such a soothing presence and I’m thankful for you
AMEN, a lot of us feel that way.
You are so kind! Thank you 😊
❤❤❤Tipper, i had that same Vita-mix.
Oh goodness Wallace 😊
@@CelebratingAppalachia He would've been what we call a "bit of a wag" Tipper!
Hey Tipper, you get as nostalgic as you want. It's a nice emotion to have. Love y'all. God bless.
❤always enjoy you reading, making a recipe, and being nostalgic!😊❤ i love you like a sister that i never had!
Thank you Debbie! Happy to be your sister 😊
m y late mama loved Postum. Thanks for the sweet memories this post sent me too.
Thank you!
I haven't seen Postum since I was a kid ❤ Daddy drank it. Ty for sharing 😊
I hope I never have to give up coffee cause I love it! And my grandma drinks postum sometimes instead of coffee. -Greg
I haven't thought about Postum in years. My dad started drinking it after he gave up coffee. I don't remember ever tasting it, much less drinking it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
So glad that this video popped up in my feed!
I am going to buy a jar of Postum! It will be delicious!
I also am Sentimental, loved your video!
Thank you, Tipper... Be Well & Be Safe! 💗🤗💗
Love my Barlow knife. In my family it was a rite of passage to be given a pocketknife from Granddad
I loved this ❤. Reminds me of Kenny Rogers Christmas song, Homemade Christmas in Kentucky. Thank you … ♥️
Loved the reading, Tipper. Just beautiful. I will look for John Parris books now at my local thrift book store. Thank you.
Have a great day and enjoy the 4th😊
Thank you! You too!
My Mama was from Waynesville and her and her aunt always drank Postum❤
I enjoyed the story by John. Enjoy your frappe!
My grandmother used to drink a cup of Postum every morning. Such good memories of mornings with her. ❤
I learned to swim in a place called Cornbread Bottom, which was part of the Kaskaskia River in Illinois. As you might guess, the bottom was as smooth as the crust on top of cornbread.
That was a lovely post. Thank you for sharing with us Tipper.
Thank you Tripper ,made me think about my child hood and all the fun things we did growing up lot of the same as you Happy 4th of July to you all.God Bless ❤
It's ok to be sentimental. I think as we get older, the more we become that way. Thank you for sharing!!😘😘🙏🙏😀😍😍
My mom passed this past Wednesday & I’ve been being very nostalgic these days. Love your videos, they remind me of my family a lot. Mama liked watching them before went downhill so badly. Thank you for sharing your family with us. ♥️
I'm so sorry you lost her. I will pray for you during this hard time. I'm glad we remind you of your family and good times!!

Happy 4th of July Tipper and family. Love hearing anything from the past. I think time was simple then and folks cared about others.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I remember Postum. I’m going to try your frappé recipe with coffee!
So nice what a good video ❤ from Canada 🍁
Thanks!
So glad you enjoyed it 😊
When I glanced at the title I just knew it said possum frappe 😯... it's funny how many thoughts can flash through your mind 🤣
Wonderful poem! Thanks Tipper 🤗❤️
😊
I love the sound of a screen door too 😊
I've not thought of drinking postum in years. My mom used to drink it and sometimes I would have a cup with her. Not bad at all.
My Mama always loved a cake walk!! We used to have them at elementary school at the fall festivals.
I loved that reading Tipper!
All looking good enjoy those new babies and have a safe 4 th God bless you all
My grandparents, who were Mormons, drank Postum since it doesn't contain caffiene.
I will! So glad you liked them 😊
Happy 4th! Thank you for sharing joy!
Sorry you have to deal with it too.
Tipper, this was a beautiful video. Thank you❤️
Looks delicious!!! Those were the good Ole days. I haven't seen a cake walk here in years. We got some rain but are still really dry. Praying you get some. Yall have a blessed night.
I haven't been able to find it recently, but in the past I found one that was cocoa flavored. It was delicious wish I could find it again.
Yes Tipper I grew up with Postum. Glad you got off the coffee. Our love to you all!
Thank you Buz! Hope you are doing good!!
Good read and drink.God Bless. 💚& 🙏🙏's for Granny and all. Jean
I've never heard of postum, but I'll be sure to try to find it! I just remember as a child my daddy couldn't stand chickory coffee, he said it was a bad day in the military when that's what he got... Love y'all and God Bless! Please have a blessed and safe 4th! Next year those grandsons will be toddling or "Tipping" all over ❤️🙏🇺🇲🎇
😊 Thank you!
I love Outshine popsicles too and checked the sugar content and grape was lowest of the ones I checked, Matt is lucky or smart to prefer that one.
Great recipe!
Thanks for telling us about John Parrish.
Thank you 😊
Oooh I think I'd like that frappe'. Looks delicious!😋 ❤
