    If you’re about to head away on a longer trip, and want to add a touch of luxury to your outdoor bathroom, then a portable camping toilet is the way to go.
    With a range of options available on the market, from the very simple quadfold design to the more complicated waste holding tank models - it can be a bit tricky to pick the right one. That’s why we’ve roped in our teammate Ben to talk you through everything you need to know about choosing a camp toilet.
    In this video, Ben answers all the common FAQ’s we get on camp toilets such as:
    What are the differences between the brands and models? What features should I look for and why? What do you get for the higher price tag? What size camp toilet should I get? What chemicals do I need and what are they for? And finally, what accessories do I need for my camp toilet? So watch above for all those details and more!

    Very useful info.. Im wanting to put one of these in the back of my Sedona for Light use. I can't tell you the implications of going camping in that thing without one, we've had to cut trips short lol..
    I'm hoping that one of these would be a great solution with a pop up tent, My girlfriend proposed the "dig a hole" idea, which is great, but we aren't guaranteed to end up in an area overnight where we can do that and when you are hundreds of miles away from home it's no fun nursing the spice mélange, hoping the service's offer clean and quiet place to lay some eggs.

    I put a Thetford in my mini van for day trips to the beach. I learned on our trip to Turkey not to put TP in the toilet as the sewers are so old. So I put the used TP in a doggie bag and bring along plastic bags to line the bowl and dispose of #2. I put up modesty panels (Pareao) with binder clips to the plastic to ceiling separation. I love not using public toilets. P.S. I also put a sink with running water in the minivan. Don’t clog the toilet with paper and you’ll be glad .

      My opinion been camping for 35 years basically go sit on them all find one that suits your rear end I can say a bla bla bla would be perfect but it might be too small for your rear end
      And fabric softener works wonders in the top tank and a little bit in the bottom tank keep it smelling not like what you last emptied while in storage

    Hey, regarding seat space, which one (thetford 365 vs dometic has more seat room for the action? Dometic seems to be not so wide nor deep as thetford in the size specs, but i wonder if this is also true for the important area.

      I don't have any experience with them, nor have I actually had a chance to have a good look at them. My primary concern is how bulky it would be, but if you have the capacity to take it with you then it can be a good way to minimize water use. ~ Ben

    I bought a toilet from dry-toilet 2 years ago and it is the best toilet you could ever consider. It has a 20’ long Mylar tube in it. After each use, it twist off the poo and sucks down a new empty bowl. There is absolutely no odor ever. After 15 uses, you remove the cassette which is already in a heavy plastic bag and put in a new one. I converted my black water tank to a second gray water tank. There is always some residue in the funnel down into the bottom of toilets in this review. With my toilet you throw the plastic bag in the trash with no smell.

    trying to figure out a easy thing? what chemical to get for Top vs. Bottom here in us? keep looking for this theford stuff but no go here

    • @SnowysOutdoors
      @SnowysOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure about what is available in the US, but I'm pretty sure you should be able to find it over there somewhere.
      Some chemicals can be used in both top and bottom tanks, whilst brands like Thetford and Dometic have a rinse chemical which cleans and freshens, and a waste tank chemical which is designed specifically to break the waste down.
      I'd suggest starting with the Thetford (www.thetford.com/) or Dometic (www.dometic.com/) websites, you may be able to find a dealer or get in touch with someone who can help from there.

There are some sanitisers as well as the chemicals mentioned in this video on our website here - www.snowys.com.au/portable-toilet-chemicals. I don't know of anything more available though sorry, but you should be able to find these chemicals at most camping and caravan outlets. ~ Ben

    Of the three toilets you show, is the middle taller one the Thetford 365?

  • @tonymiller5841
    @tonymiller5841 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The only issue with chem toilets is that they last for 7 days top. As per manual you need to empty them and re-fill chemicals in under 7 days. And it also depends on type of chemicals, some chemicals give you only 5 days. For us it's a problem. Our trips take quite a bit longer than 5 days and searching for a dump point every 5 days is not an option and we don't manage to fill it up, so it goes home 3/4th empty and yet unusable because it needs to be emptied anyway and building up gas (it starts building up gas after 5 days).

    • @SnowysOutdoors
      @SnowysOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm not sure I'd want to be carting it around full for much longer than a week anyway, Tony. You must be pretty remote to regularly not come across any form of dump point within a week. I don't have any suggestions for you sorry. ~ Ben

    • @SnowysOutdoors

      It depends on which model/s you are referring to, PamHardy, the Thetford 365 in the video actually has a 21L waste tank, but you are right in that their smaller range which is more comparable to the Dometic toilet in the video only has a 12L tank.

    Dunny paper. I assume you can't just use your favorite brand as they may not break down correctly? And it would be better still if we bagged and disposed of used paper separately and didn't put it in there in the first place? I guess that would be similar to disposing of nappies....

    • @SnowysOutdoors
      @SnowysOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, you want to use a toilet paper that easily breaks down, Thetford make their own (www.snowys.com.au/aqua-soft-toilet-paper) or try and use something without all the inks, dyes and scents like the paper from WhoGivesACrap (au.whogivesacrap.org/).
      Where it is safe to do so I burn the toilet paper in the hole, but care should be taken doing this and should be avoided in fire ban season.
      I like the idea of making it a requirement to carry it out, there is nothing worse than a campsite strewn with used toilet paper.

      You don't need to use the chemicals, DIYkaja, especially if it is just for 'number one's', but it will keep things smelling nicer.
      The flush water chemical helps keep the toilet clean and fresh, whilst the waste water chemical is primarily there to assist in the breakdown of solid materials, or 'number two's'.

    You failed to explain the number of uses before the unit needs to be emptied. Is peeing counted the same as pooing in the count? Can they be emptied into a normal sewered or septic tank toilet? How many flushes before the water needs to be topped up? How much water is needed to fill the cistern? What about a pop up tent out house? I believe they exist and are often essential. Do they ever block up? If so what causes them to block up? How are they unblocked and cleaned? Last time we used a camping toilet we used a plastic toilet seat built onto a folding stool but we used plastic bags designed to fit the toilet stool, we then tied and buried the bag of waste. That is a cheaper and more compact option but one does need a shovel. The higher Porta Potty looks like the best option because it can be used more times before it has to be emptied. One of the most important camping topics. Need more info.

      Hi Bob, thanks for your feedback.
      We didn't include all that information in this particular video as there are numerous models all with different specifications, and it would have created a very long video overloaded with information, we produced this purely as a guide to help people get started on their portable toilet purchasing journey.
      We have created individual videos for most of the toilets in our range though, which you can see here - www.snowys.com.au/camp-toilets. In each these we go into more details on specific models. Furthermore we have information in a blog article here - www.snowys.com.au/blog/toileting-in-the-bush/.
      Regarding toilet tents/outhouses, you can see our range here - www.snowys.com.au/shower-tents. As for the toilets getting blocked, this isn't something I've ever heard of happening, there are no long pipes where matter can get clogged up, so if you keep things clean you won't have any problems.
      Hopefully this information contains all the answers you are seeking, if not then get in touch with us so we can help answer any other queries you have - www.snowys.com.au/contact-us.

I have a little 4x8 trailer that's basically a rolling bedroom, so I have no self-contained facilities.
