- Periphery performs "Make Total Destroy" / peripheryband . I attached a GoPro Hero2 HD to their headstocks using the ventilated helmet mount (not the ideal mount to use, but its the only one I had!). Since I only had one camera, I had to take each member's footage at separate shows (as you might be able to tell), and edit them all together into one seamless video.
I'm currently working on a full-length tour documentary of Periphery's recent European tour with Between the Buried and Me, and The Safety Fire. Check out the documentary I made of the Summer Slaughter tour in the USA earlier this year • "Summer's Laughter" - ... . Please subscribe for updates!
Periphery is:
Spencer Sotelo - vocals
Matt Halpern - drums
Misha Mansoor - guitar
Mark Holcomb - guitar
Jake Bowen - guitar
Adam Nolly Getgood - bass
Made by Jeff Holcomb / jeffecation
Special thanks to Nick Dodd - บันเทิง
He is part of the Periphery crew and if we have our way, will be for the long term! He is invaluable and irreplaceable. On tour he does Merch, Lights and Films for documentaries which he edits and puts together, and on nights where we want to do something silly like play The Walk with me on drums and Nolly on guitar, he can jump on bass at a moment's notice and kill it!
needs more drumstick cam
lol, Misha invading Mark's camera space at 2:54
Fucking hell...
10 years later and this still gives me goosebumps!
2:55 A Wild Misha appeared!
+Zander Shepard lmao
1:21 That was fabulous
inimaginable
Just... Wow. If seeing these guys play from the crowd doesn't give you an idea of how incredibly smooth their playing is, videos like this certainly do!
This video relates so much to the band. Amazing Idea and commitment from the guys and Jeff. Allot of guitar hero editing, totally worth it.
Such a fantastic band. And super awesome job on the video Jeff! really really good.
This video is frakkin' sick!! killer song as well. VERY flawless job Jeff!
what a ride its been lads i love you guys
i have no idea why bands haven't done this before, and filmed a whole live song like this. Such a good idea!
no matter how many times i listen to this song, it only gets better and better!
this is so much better than the MV
This is an awesome video man, great idea!
Epic Nolly: 2:27
Pro-mode
HAHAHHA Misha at 2:55!!
Best advert for GoPros ever? I certainly want to buy them for our gig work now. Nice video!
dude... this is great. jeff youre the best!
0:52 - 0:54 Misha. LOL.
Actually there are two in the vid. The fill in from last years summers laughter (Mark's Brother I believe) who you see with the dread on the drawn out shots of Matt, and then Nolly. This is a combination of multiple videos.
amazing job Jeff!
I have indeed seen that, many times :). That is amazing work on both of your's part! :)
Killer! Please do more!
What a sick video. I love how snug the cam hold to the head stock. Whenever he head bangs I am almost forced to myself.
This vid is amazing love it
We need more of this :)
if this was fimled at the Worcester Palladium during the summer slaughter tour then i was in the front row!! such a great show.
This live audio is ridiculously good, I gotta go to a Periphery show.
This is awesome!
"modern metal songs ae easy" hum o ok
Marcelo Santos no one fucking says that
i know right? i hate when people make up arguments in their head.
Amazing !
MOAR!
awesome performance
the hypest song easily
this is awesome
@ferociouspokemachine he has a floyd rose on the guitar he used for the recording so that when he bends the low e string (really hard), it makes his floyd lift, causing his b string (currently in Ab or G# to go a whole step lower to F#) it's in the old new groove video on periphery's channel.
no offense, but them being mainly a recording band i didnt expect much, but this is incredible
So cool!
this kind of footage is pretty neat for figuring out what they're playing :D
Thanks for clarifying that Jeff
@TheExtremist123 hey man! yes, I'm Mark's brother. and no, I didn't use the gopro software for anything on this video. I just used the raw footage and edited it in FCPX.
Totally agree with you mate!
This would make a GREAT official video.
Both those songs are played/were recorded on a 7 string.
In New Groove that not is not an F#, its G because I used the floating bridge to bend the note a half step down from Ab.
And Captain On is indeed an F#, but we just tuned the note down for that one note when it hits, the powerchords played throughout the song require our normal Drop Ab tuning, so if we play that song live we would just pitch the note down with the Axefx for that one note when it hits. 7 String Songs.
I love this! Too bad you didnt get a cam for each member though. You could clip a GoPro to Matt's shirt or have him hold it in his mouth like Carter Beauford. Maybe tape one to Sponce's mic or something I'd think. Ready to see more!
you guys should do some more of these guitar cams
every metal show should be recorded like this
Yo Jeff, if you ever do this again you should also put the GoPro on Spencer's mic. Great job.
AWESOMENESS
God I love the this.
Just so you know, that part in New Groove is still done with a 7-string tuned to G#.
1:09-1:11 HOLY CRAP!! NOLLY TURNED TO JEFF!!! (I'm referring to when Jeff had to play Bass while Nolly was still in Europe.)
you should've put a helmet cam on matt, too! good job though, jeff. it looks great!
I don't yet! but if you go to Nolly's page, you'll find a bass-only version of this video if you're interested. :)
In New Groove at 1:02, Bulb uses a technique where he bends down on the 6th string making the note he plays on the 7th string lower. So that's why your hearing an F#
Captain On I don't know but Misha said Ji is the first song they used 8 strings on so I don't know how to explain that.
best song in the universe
at 2:45 misha goes wild and flips the finger multiple times with great style.....GO PERIPHERY!!
I saw them play New Groove live. They went straight into Letter Experiment. It is a 7 tuned to G# ;D. Not sure what tuning Captain On is but it is definitely not an 8 string.
I think we can all agree that this band is fucking fantastic
Now there just needs to be one of these for Racecar and Ji
This video is so fucking good dude. Great job. Would love to have you over on r/Djent sometime.
1:38-1:40, the hand slide transition was perfect
Hey Jeff! Great job. Do you have any more similar videos for the other songs? Cheers.
I want a whole concert shot like this...
Facinating...
The part in new groove that you depicted is created when you add tension to the tremolo by pulling on the strings. if you pull on the string below the Ab then it will add tension, pull the tremolo and detune the lower string a bit. In captain on, i believe they used the Ragnarok tuning as you never hear a full F# power chord in that song. Single note yes but i dont hear the power chord.
You should do this with Luck as a Constant and show each guitarist playing their separate part. That would look so cool!!!
Holy shit, you can't drop tune a seven string guitar? That's the first I've heard of that. Thanks for enlightening everyone on how an 8 string guitar and only an 8 string guitar can produce a low F#.
If you listen to New Groove closely you'll hear them going lower than G#. Most covers on youtube play the "live version", but the original makes use of the 8th string. Same goes for Captain On, there's an F# going on in there.
I literally got slapped in the face by Periphery ! Awesome video.
This video rocks just like the new album!!!!Yeah... \m/
it should be a cam on each tip of Matt's drumsticks and we all would be like, wow this. is. just. AHOAHOFDOFJAOHGFUHAFIJHDAIOGFIPUKE.
I won't doubt that he may have used a pitch shifting effect on the Axe Fx, but tell me how you could back this up, I'm curious to see how you think he used an effect as opposed to actually using an 8 string or some other more "conventional" means to get the low F#.
5 years old, and still only 2k upvotes... worth way more
Of course Periphery manages to get even cooler than maximum awesomeness by filming their song from the viewpoint of their tuning pegs. If only they could sell tickets to those seats. LOL
Nolly look so fucking badass when he plays.
I haven't tried it out yet, but I'm pretty sure the wrist mount would work best!
awesome
Misha's cam is from an Atlanta date @ the masquerade. I was there \m/
Hey Jeff, you mention the ventilated helmet mount wasn't the ideal mount, what would you suggest for headstock videos like this using the GoPro?
The eye in silence grips the Nolly to begin
Look up Nolly - Make Total Destroy Headstock. it's the entire song from his gopro, with his live feed
Could you upload every single track? (Nolly is online but I would like to see the guitars)
This is what Guitar Hero will look like in 15 years.
thanks man! :)
When will you come grace us Norwegians with your awesomeness again?! D:
I second that drumstick cam ;p
Nice!
Hey Jeff,
I was just wondering, could it be possible for you to make like a collage sort of thing with all of the guitarists playing at the same time? Like have 1 for Nolly, 1 for Misha, 1 for Mark and 1 for Jake simultaniously.
I think that'd be killer and I'd really appreciate it if you did make it (:
What mount would you have used for the gopro?
A mic cam for Sponce would be pretty awesome too
WE WANT A NOLLY CAM!!
I'm sittin here naked, eating pizza, drinking coke and digging this. Ignore the naked part pls.
should have put a camera on the end of the mic too, so we could get a good look at Spencer's techniques too
i was hoping for a gopro on spencers mic and matts drumsticks aswell :P
Great video. Had a sore neck by the end though haha.
I need one of these cameras.
As well as New Groove and Captain On.
Havent seen something like this since AC/DC's Thuderstruck Music Video
