I don’t think people realize just how much influence this song had. The djent scene still exists, but it was only in the spotlight for a short time. However, it seeped into the larger world of metal enough that the “djent” sound is all over modern metal songs. You can put on any modern metal playlist and hear that staccato, throaty kind of sound all over the place.
i love this band, they really showed me that even the best melodies are worth nothing without a great rhythmic arrangement - it applies to everything, even pop and rap
I was still eating dirt when the is was released. I definitely got on the periphery train a bit late but I’m still here enjoying the music so it doesn’t matter much.
Once I listened to periphery for the first time. Heard that intro riff...insta classic. It's pretty rare where a band can come up with riffs that make you instantly be able to recognize a song in just a couple of notes. Hearing it makes me feel like a badass. just LISTENING to periphery makes me feel so much cooler. its strange
Really wish the rain filter wasn't on so I could actually see what all the members of Periphery looked like way back then, and what gear they were using!
What's unbelievable is how OBSESSED with "scene" and "genre" so many of us are. Clean vocals don't fit in to our "established hardcore scene" so as soon as a sung pitch is heard we turn our untrained ears off. "Oh but it's music, it's subjective, I can say whatever I want and spread it to the world." You know what? No you can't. Fuck that. I didn't spend 5 years, 16 hours a day (2-4 of which were practicing), at 21 credit hours a semester, getting two music degrees, to be told my hard work is "pussy shit" or that "the last album was better" by kids who bring their guitar to high school with them and call themselves musicians. If you don't like a style of music then say "I don't like it" and move on with your life. You literally have no right to make any claims about another artist's work other than "I like it" or "I don't like it". Now if you'd like to analyze it theoretically, or even historically, be my guest. You'll find it's far more complex, unique, and intricate than 99% of the bullshit we consider "music" today (although not quite as much as most art-music post 19th century); and I think the fact that progressive rock bands like Periphery are trying to bridge the current, VAST, gap between art music and popular music is pretty god damn respectable.
Oh grow the fuck up, you pretentious sack of shit. If someone doesn't like this than so what? You're just as bad as those lame 50 year olds who claim their time was better. I love this, but if someone doesn't so what? Does it hurt me or offend me? No, and does it offend or hurt Misha or anyone else? No www.reddit.com/r/progmetal/comments/1igvvz/no_matter_how_hard_i_try_i_cant_seem_to_get_into/cb6qjcw See that, Misha, the guitarist/main songwriter of this, is actually mature, unlike you. He realizes this and that it's not important nor does it judge your value. So please, grow the fuck up or get the fuck out, you pretentious, self-indulged sack of shit. Music *IS* subjective and anyone who claims it isn't needs to pull their head out of their ass and breath the cool, fresh air or reality.
TheRatSquid Congrats on missing the whole point of the comment. He/she is in no way saying music isn't subjective, they're saying that to label a song or band shit when you don't even have any actual knowledge of music and songwriting is flat out ignorant. End of story. You can like it and dislike it, but your opinion on musical quality from a theoretical perspective holds no merit whatsoever unless you actually understand how and why it works. You don't get to critique a book if you don't understand what most of the words mean.
Music, to a listener, is subjective. You may have noticed I never said it wasn't, I was only irritated at how some immature people use this as a means for judgement and labeling. The composition factor, however, does in fact involve a lot of objective concepts, which give the art, as a whole, depth beyond what is simply "heard". Believing music is only subjective and judging it based solely on what you hear is like assuming a five star steak will taste bad because it's brown, and you don't like that color.
Misha used the word "like" 3 times in his reddit comment. That's all I want from listeners, to use words line "like" and "don't like" instead of "good" or "bad"
right? I remember first discovering periphery back in 2009 haha, and there are people who listened to them when they were just a project on soundcloud!
This is the shit. Still holds up as one of the best songs I've ever listened to. Every time I hear people say something about Maryland music, I turn them to you.
"Spencer's vocals are too high-pitched! It ruins the music for me." >actively listens to Rob Halford and Dio without complaint. inb4 le epick maymay arrows
techdeathcurator They're entirely different styles of vocals. I happen to think the vocals fit in this song, though. Dios vocals wouldn't fit in this, and Spencer would sound stupid singing a Rainbow song. Nice memearchery btw ;
No point having a vocalist with a lower range. Vocals wouldn't cut through the mix. Matt Halpern explains that about having trouble with having his drums cutting through.
Spencer got alot of unfair criticism for his vocals on this album but people gotta understand he came in to this album where the lyrics and vocal melodies were already written. He really SHINES P2 and onward, displaying his range.
@@fornever5656 How can you say this in 2020, when Spencer has greatly improved on his vocals? Periphery has nearly 400,000 listeners on Spotify, and millions of listens? Like I think that if anything the band has gained a lot more fans. And plus, the members of the band have kept Spencer in the band despite him apparently acting like a jackass on tour for PI album came out. (from an interview with them I forget where it is.) But their dynamic has changed a lot over the years. If you look at documentaries of their recent albums they get along pretty well and in fact Spencer does vocals last *most* of the time when recording. So to say that this band sucks now because they focus on Spencer is wrong. I saw in an interview with Misha that he still has old riffs he wrote back in Haunted Shores that he wants to make into more songs in the future (I think it was referencing Sentient Glow.) They got their own record label now, they left Sumerian in 2016 and have many different ways of making money. Spencer has his own project with Matt that's under the label that's made some waves. For Spencer to be the factual downfall of this band is untrue. And from my knowledge Periphery never went through a downfall? From an opinion standpoint, I can understand why people may not enjoy his vocals and I respect that, but if it bothers you that much don't listen to the band. if you came into the Icarus Lives comment section to say that it sounds kinda petty.
I remember hearing this song in a trailer for V8 Superstars Racing 10 years ag(literally, 2011), I watched the trailer so many times just because the song was so cool and the game looked fun Only found out this year who wrote it but recognized it instantly when I heard the real version. And the reason I found it is because the drummer played the DOOM soundtrack with mick Gordon at the game awards in 2016. I saw the name of his band in the comments. 5 years later I finally checked out "periphery " and stumbled onto this Video games lead me to a great band
periphery should re-record this song, spencer sounds soooooooo much better now... and their overall mixes have improved a lot, because.. nolly nollynollynolly
Idk i really like how spongey the P1 tone was. Feel like a lot of bands in the genre have lost that in favour of a more realistic but more piercing tone.
Misha has actually been working on a new recording of this song but I don't know if he ever finished it or plans to. I think he said that he feels completely uninspired by this album and feel like working on it just takes time off from working on new stuff.
Periphery full set live in brixton HQ filmed 3 years ago posted by peripheryfan498 was such a good recording. Spencers vocals are so raw and heavy sounding but yet they play with so much emotion. It realy took me to a far away place to where the meaning of true love lies within our hearts. Awesome set!
since when did people start hating clean vocals? and when did clean vocals get termed clean? Meshuggah is probably my favorite Metal band of all time and Jen's has the harshest or vocals yet I love listening to Daniel/Ashe of Tesseract sing their B4's and C#5's, clean preferably. Clean vocals can be just as epic.
The self-titled album is such a masterpiece. Although the second album was awesome, too, this album kicks ass on another level. Clear will be great, and I believe that Juggernaut will be even better! 2014 is going to be a great year for music.
At around 2:00 - 2:10 If you listen VERY closely (You probably need good headphones) you can hear faint hum that's to the pitch of an Ab. Kind of sounds a little like what happens when cell phones interfere with pickups. It's easier to hear on the rests when they aren't playing any notes. It seems to go on through the rest of the section but it's harder to hear when Spencer comes in. Anyone else notice this?
I hear it on my laptop speakers! haha, yeah, it's sort of a cellphone hum! I think it's on purpose though, cause it's quite obvious, but like.. A weird thing to leave on a track!
I'm just starting to listen to Periphery and this shit is incredible. I prefer Spencer's newer screams compared to this but the dude and the band as a whole are just so unbelievably talented.
@@marsamune5592 I just saw a 2-year-old comment from myself and I also complained the volume wasn't loud enough... I'm probably half-deaf for having the volume up so high wearing headphones, but perhaps the video itself isn't loud enough, too.
I've never listened to this song without going directly into "Totla Mad", it felt like half the song was missing without that immediate transition. Definitely an album that deserves to be played to completion....everytime.
I remember thinking this was weird when I was 14. Lol As I Lay Dying and KSE were so much better, now I walk around campus between classes humming Blood Eagle and tapping the drums after listening to P2 and Alpha/Omega through and through
this band is gay- wtf? how can someone call this band is gay ? they simply make good music. their singer is not good- wtf ?he hits all the notes and has a good voice imo. so shut up and enjoy this epic music
2009 was the greatest year for me. All these bands were dropping absolute madness. Flawless among the fallen, After the burial, all shall parish, the black dahlia, the faceless, animals as leaders, the black dahlia murder, necrophagist, decapitation, as I lay dieing, periphery and I can keep going
I love seeing all the people's comments about how they think this band sucks. You're seriously going to judge a whole band based off of ONE song just because it's the highest viewed? This whole album was written instrumentally, lyrics came WAY after. Periphery is one of my favorite bands and this is personally my LEAST favorite song by them. I actually NEVER listen to it. I came to this video to give it another shot. Lookup anything from their second album which was written with all members.
I ONLY listen to the instrumental version of the first album. But I love every song on P2 and Clear. You can tell they were arranged to fit vocals better.
TOTALLY AGREE, Racecar, Letter Experiment, and Ow My Feelings are gods compared to this song. This song is probably their least unique song of this album. And people are judging them because its their most popular. And I almost listen to this song the least out of ALL of periphery's songs. Now THAT says something.
Layering, Lots of layering, and whatever stuff they can't cover by themselves is usually covered by a backing track, adds to the whole "feel" of the experience, saw em' last week, it was intentse :E lol

2. Listen to Periphery II, Clear, or Juggernaut and realize this guy is extremely talented and has improved greatly since this first album.
3. Profit.
Clearly, they haven't heard Sleeping With Sirens lol.
the vocals on this album are perfect
@@americandesideriobold3925 Well, the cleans are pretty darn good on this album. The screams...not so much. But sponce has come a long long way and now his cleans and screams have both improved so much
What, how do you profit.
he sounds like a beta emo
apparently some people are dissing spencer's voice? like he's improved so much over the years but even back then he was really good. what the hell are you talking about?
also, if you're looking at the comments scroll back up the video cause theyre doing the crab dance
...Thank you for purchasing Periphery's self-titled debut long play record. Periphery!
Be dazzled by distortion, be bombarded by bass beats and jitterbug to djent!
0:24 the only high-hat in music history that sends chills down your spine as you get ready to BOUNCE!!!
Having a total Periphery binge today. A great day already.
true
I actually adore the vocals on this track. It's very well composed.
You know its Alex bois when there's a 180deg angle between the legs.
reminds me of music video of slipknot - before I forget
i love this band, they really showed me that even the best melodies are worth nothing without a great rhythmic arrangement - it applies to everything, even pop and rap
Still as impressive as it was 11 years ago! Self-titled debut long play record is still my favorite.
Man! Simpler times
Yeah it's still great imo.
Hearing it makes me feel like a badass. just LISTENING to periphery makes me feel so much cooler. its strange
All great bands are instantly recognizable by there sound and or guitar tone.
man i'm so brainrotted that i recognise this song from the first note
Really wish the rain filter wasn't on so I could actually see what all the members of Periphery looked like way back then, and what gear they were using!
I have to come back to this song from time to time. My favorite song of theirs hands down.
Agreed man
Oh grow the fuck up, you pretentious sack of shit. If someone doesn't like this than so what? You're just as bad as those lame 50 year olds who claim their time was better. I love this, but if someone doesn't so what? Does it hurt me or offend me? No, and does it offend or hurt Misha or anyone else? No
www.reddit.com/r/progmetal/comments/1igvvz/no_matter_how_hard_i_try_i_cant_seem_to_get_into/cb6qjcw
See that, Misha, the guitarist/main songwriter of this, is actually mature, unlike you.
Periphery is love. Periphery is life.
Can't belive this was over 6 years ago...
right? I remember first discovering periphery back in 2009 haha, and there are people who listened to them when they were just a project on soundcloud!
Still fucking love it, always the pioneer in my heart although I am no more a fan of them.
wawa0209 why no longer a fan?
I cant get along wif their musical shift. They are still sick af but I just dun enjoy the new materials:/
9*
This is the shit. Still holds up as one of the best songs I've ever listened to. Every time I hear people say something about Maryland music, I turn them to you.
Today is my birthday, Turning 15, getting my first 7 string... Yup, this is the first song I'll learn
"Spencer's vocals are too high-pitched! It ruins the music for me."
>actively listens to Rob Halford and Dio without complaint.
inb4 le epick maymay arrows
techdeathcurator They're entirely different styles of vocals. I happen to think the vocals fit in this song, though. Dios vocals wouldn't fit in this, and Spencer would sound stupid singing a Rainbow song.
Nice memearchery btw ;
No point having a vocalist with a lower range. Vocals wouldn't cut through the mix. Matt Halpern explains that about having trouble with having his drums cutting through.
its not about the pitch! this guy is out! unless they package is as some kind of new music!
arunashamal What's out? His pitch is literally spot on.
+techdeathcurator Bruce Dickinson /thread
Spencer got alot of unfair criticism for his vocals on this album but people gotta understand he came in to this album where the lyrics and vocal melodies were already written. He really SHINES P2 and onward, displaying his range.
spencer was and is the downfall of this band
@@fornever5656 hard no on that one
@@twinny_mi thats a lot of words i'm not going to read
@@fornever5656 how was he the downfall…? They kicked off when he joined, if he left it would be bad for them
I've always loved Periphery, vocals and all, but I have to say that they have all come a long way
Icarus lived so the machines could turn
Can't wait for their next Icarus-themed song in 2036
I remember hearing this song in a trailer for V8 Superstars Racing 10 years ag(literally, 2011), I watched the trailer so many times just because the song was so cool and the game looked fun
Only found out this year who wrote it but recognized it instantly when I heard the real version.
And the reason I found it is because the drummer played the DOOM soundtrack with mick Gordon at the game awards in 2016. I saw the name of his band in the comments. 5 years later I finally checked out "periphery " and stumbled onto this
Video games lead me to a great band
I love the chorus for this song, I just wish the rest of the song kept up the groove that the intro had.
+Cameron Reynolds exactly, i couldn't have said it better myself
+Cameron Reynolds But when the intro comes back at the end only, it makes it all the sweeter.
don't question Periphery.
I would love the drum pack such as the cymbals, the snare, kick, everything
periphery should re-record this song, spencer sounds soooooooo much better now... and their overall mixes have improved a lot, because.. nolly
nollynollynolly
Lucas Villa too bad he left RIP Nolly
@@IanRWC43 he's still a functioning member of the band, just doesn't tour

Idk i really like how spongey the P1 tone was. Feel like a lot of bands in the genre have lost that in favour of a more realistic but more piercing tone.
Misha has actually been working on a new recording of this song but I don't know if he ever finished it or plans to. I think he said that he feels completely uninspired by this album and feel like working on it just takes time off from working on new stuff.
One of those bands you hate at first but they grow on you like an addiction
I cant believe i listened to this song for the first time in december 2010. How time can go that fast?
Periphery full set live in brixton HQ filmed 3 years ago posted by peripheryfan498 was such a good recording. Spencers vocals are so raw and heavy sounding but yet they play with so much emotion. It realy took me to a far away place to where the meaning of true love lies within our hearts. Awesome set!
When did Dream Theater & Meshuggah have a baby?
John Cena is better than Stone Cold
Inthink it was in 2004
Huehueheie
Dream theater: he has your eyes
Meshuggah: and he has your hair
Periphery: d d d
Meshuggah: hONEY HIS FIRST WORDS
Periphery: djent
Both: awwwww
@@PeeNidsCold Funny fact: guitarist Jake Bowen is John Petrucci's nephew haha
😄perfect
since when did people start hating clean vocals? and when did clean vocals get termed clean? Meshuggah is probably my favorite Metal band of all time and Jen's has the harshest or vocals yet I love listening to Daniel/Ashe of Tesseract sing their B4's and C#5's, clean preferably. Clean vocals can be just as epic.
+Jake Hall Idk, Tom's scream-singy belting technique can get quite harsh. Same goes for Sempiternal era Oliver Sykes and the Meshuggah vocalist.
It's not that the fact that's it's clean, it's the fact that it is high pitched
The self-titled album is such a masterpiece. Although the second album was awesome, too, this album kicks ass on another level. Clear will be great, and I believe that Juggernaut will be even better! 2014 is going to be a great year for music.
Still listening after 8 years. This album will always hold special memories for me.
It sounds a lot like the symbols at first, but yes after listening 3 times I do hear it that's exactly what it is
it's a quiet guitar arpeggio-ish thing as far as i can hear
I hear it on my laptop speakers! haha, yeah, it's sort of a cellphone hum! I think it's on purpose though, cause it's quite obvious, but like.. A weird thing to leave on a track!
I hear it too but it sort of sounds like the snare resonating. Does Halpern tune his snare to Ab? That would explain things.
nah, to me definitely cellphone hum
my only regret is that i can only make my speakers go 100%
Crabcore Lives!!!!
Periphery has ALWAYS been the riff kings. I'll just bust into this one whenever and wherever I am
The way Misha plays the intro is pure Djent. It DOES Djent.
step 1: play the video at 2x speed
step 2 : laugh your ass off
Ikr I died
+13Shafiq666 yep step 2 is deffinatelly the true one :D
+13Shafiq666 hahaha good call
The syncopation at 3:05 still hits pretty hard but more like something from Insomnia haha
I wish they had more songs like this.
This is first song I´ve heard from Periphery !!! Love them
God, it's kinda no joke how much spencer has improved as a vocalist.
I know right??
I'm just starting to listen to Periphery and this shit is incredible. I prefer Spencer's newer screams compared to this but the dude and the band as a whole are just so unbelievably talented.

I've never listened to this song without going directly into "Totla Mad", it felt like half the song was missing without that immediate transition. Definitely an album that deserves to be played to completion....everytime.
I remember thinking this was weird when I was 14. Lol As I Lay Dying and KSE were so much better, now I walk around campus between classes humming Blood Eagle and tapping the drums after listening to P2 and Alpha/Omega through and through
2:07 hello Rob Scallon
this band is gay-
wtf? how can someone call this band is gay ? they simply make good music.
their singer is not good-
wtf ?he hits all the notes and has a good voice imo.
so shut up and enjoy this epic music
If this band was gay, then I would still listen to them because the band members sexuality has no affect on how talented they are.
Well, I have to say, I didn't like it at all, but it's not bad, just not my style, not liking something doesn't mean it's bad, or gay...
chugging instrumentals of death and destruction don't go well with a flamboyant singer who sounds like he should be doing pop music
MrJoe1928 That is where you are wrong because he is actually spot on.
I love their sound. It's just perfect.
Seeing these dudes in London next Saturday. It's going to be a blast!
The first djent riff everyone learns
What's djent? My grandchildren asked....
A small tear runs down my face..
"Let me take you on a wild story kids."
I learned of this band because of my teacher and so far it's pretty good
Basic Melody teacher has good taste
Saw these guys in Ottawa! Never seen a band so tight! They are gushing with talent
This song just feels all over the place like it doesn't know what it wants to be. The intro is dope though.

The 7 string 0-3-5
I love seeing all the people's comments about how they think this band sucks. You're seriously going to judge a whole band based off of ONE song just because it's the highest viewed? This whole album was written instrumentally, lyrics came WAY after. Periphery is one of my favorite bands and this is personally my LEAST favorite song by them. I actually NEVER listen to it. I came to this video to give it another shot. Lookup anything from their second album which was written with all members.
I much prefer their instrumentals. But this song isn't too bad, not my favorite version of it, though.
I ONLY listen to the instrumental version of the first album. But I love every song on P2 and Clear. You can tell they were arranged to fit vocals better.
Weird. I like this song.
I DO listen to this one the least lol
iambulb
I never really gave them the time of day because of the clean vocals. Now I appreciate and understand.
How come they have 3 guitarists? I've learned some of their stuff and never seen why it would be necessary
Ambients/rythm , lead, rythm.
Just Djent.
Layering, Lots of layering, and whatever stuff they can't cover by themselves is usually covered by a backing track, adds to the whole "feel" of the experience, saw em' last week, it was intentse :E lol
Ahh okay makes sense :) I haven't had the pleasure of seeing them live but i can imagine they're awesome !
