Make Total Destroy - Bass Nolly-Cam

  • Headstock-cam of my band Periphery playing "Make Total Destroy" at Manchester Academy on our recent European tour with Between the Buried and Me. Footage captured by the awesome Jeff Holcomb, check out his youtube channel here: / jeffecation
    I proudly use and endorse Dingwall basses, Darkglass Electronics and Fractal Audio
    The sound in this video is my direct live tone, laid over an instrumental mix of the album track since the GoPro camera did not pick up much of the other instruments at all. The GoPro audio is, however, blended in there at all times and solo'd during the breaks and the very last note.

    Well, i am nearly 50 years of age, been playing bass for 32 of those years. thank god i haven't died yet without hearing this tone! The best i have ever hear and i have heard a few!! This has made me buy one of your signature basses after 10 years of being married to Spector Euro's. Nolly...your a legend, love the bass and the band. Cheers.

      i rock a Sarris Sustom and im broke so yea, no dingwall for me. i am seriously getting a set of Kallium strings in 158 for drop A thought. 135 im running now is just too floptastic for A. my Sarris custom 4 string has the best tone ive ever played but again...really needs bigger strings, even for drop B. ill play whatever bass someone gives me for free, no guarantees on how long thought, i will attempt a 2 week practice run regardless if anyone feels the generous need to donate me a bass, just sayin.

    • @Spectre7226
      @Spectre7226 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally use Kaliums myself and can say that on a 34 in scale bass the 158 is amazing in Drop Ab and I have a very heavy pick attack. I also have a 6 string which I currently use a balanced 124 5 string set for the top strings and a 190 for the bottom. And the reasoning for that is because it's tuned to a Drop F to go along with the 8 string guitars in my band.

    • @xlaythe
      @xlaythe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tone is primarily due to a darkglass preamp

    • @OllieWales
      @OllieWales 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xlaythe There is a LOT that goes into his tone. Its not primarily down to any one single thing. You don't NEED a Dingwall with a Darkglass preamp to get a similar tone but you will need a similar overdrive pedal, compressor, etc. In the same way, if you do have a dingwall with a datkglass preamp then you won't need the same overdrive to get a more similar tone. No single part is vital and no single part is so specific that you're gonna sound shit without it.

    • @harrymorris9406
      @harrymorris9406 8 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      +zamkowicz NO that's just djent. Bass is not guitar but lower, it's a reference point for all the chords and harmonies played by everyone in the band

    • @zamkowicz
      @zamkowicz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +144

      Bass and guitar are vastly different instruments, but in this particular genre bass IS essentially "guitar but lower" and being an incredibly technical guitar player probably helps a lot

    • @harrymorris9406
      @harrymorris9406 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That's why i said it's just djent. The picking probably helps transfer those skills. but i play bass with my fingers like many do, and it's not anything like picking

      I think its a combination of the dark-glass pedal and it being nollsworth..

    Probably hard as hell to get a bass player as good as nolly.
    I say he's up there with the likes of les claypool, cliff burton, and steve harris.

    • @Prince_Sharming
      @Prince_Sharming 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ClockworkofMadness Not really, but he's extremely talented. I feel that playing in periphery doesn't let his bass abilities shine.

    • @clockworkofmadness
      @clockworkofmadness 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** He's very good
      I say periphery should get 2 bass players, since they have 3 guitarists

    • @Prince_Sharming
      @Prince_Sharming 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ClockworkofMadness I don't know about 2 bass players. That would be too much low end. I think it would just end up swamping the mix. There's only one band I can think of that has two bassists: Necromantia.
      Then again, Necromantia is a black metal band, and has no guitarists.

    • @clockworkofmadness

      ***** Never heard of it
      Sounds awesome though.
      Also low end in periphery would just fuck up the sound

    Fractal Audio AxeFx II. The whole band uses them. Nolly used the tone matching function to capture the sound of a Darkglass Microtubes B7K preamp and ran that patch through the AxeFx's Ampeg SVT emulation and then directly into the PA.
    His tone is monstrous.

    • @ShawnKenneth
      @ShawnKenneth 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be honest, It really isn't that weird. The guitars play polyrhythmically over the drums. If you can follow it you can headbang to that all day long. It's actually more satisfying than most songs I've heard.

    • @arrestedshrimp
      @arrestedshrimp 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i didnt say they werent viable headbangs i said they were weird cus they look random and doesn't hit the eye right, cus lets be honest how many times have u seen people headbanging to polyryhtyms
