This man was ahead of his time, at least as far as SL cricket is concerned. He played at a time SL were given 4-5 test matches a year. SL were still semi-pro at that time and only after 96 WC win they were taken seriously. Greatest batsman SL ever produced.

Only 90's kids know the class of Desilva, what a Talent Desilva is and probably the most elegant leg side player and also Carl Hooper , but Hooper never reached his full potential.

With Aravinda it was not only brute force , he had a solid technique too. @4:57 The way he played with soft hands when ball reared of a good length , is a solid example of his sound technique.Somehow , given his enormous talent ,I personally felt that he underachieved in world cricket.

Wisden rightly called him one of the game's greatest entertainers. Had he just been even a cent more focussed, he'd definitely have had 7k plus runs in tests and he'd have been the second after Sachin to scale 10k runs in ODIs before eventually retiring.

Here in this innings of 167 in '89/'90, Aravinda De Silva had not yet been the same silky smooth elegant batsman with spellbinding brilliance and counterattacking stroke-play he would ultimately turn out to be a few years down the line. In fact, it had been typical of De Silva back in those relatively early days of his career to have a bit of a spoiled brat in him with some bull-headed arrogance, which brought him his own downfall more often than not. At times, it worked though. Here in this innings too, De Silva gave a rather simple straight-forward return catch to the pace bowler Merv Hughes early on his innings prior to reaching even double figures, it seems to have not been included (purposely or not ...) in this highlight package though. It was dropped by Hughes in his follow-through, thus giving De Silva the second chance which he grabbed pretty much to the maximum (thereby) reaching his hundred with caution; rather atypical of him back then. But such opportunities didn't occur always, so De Silva (back then) was seen as a batsman who could both entertain the audience with his adventurous stroke-play and frustrate them too with his rather irrational rush of blood alike, hence called "Mad Max".... It's fortunate that he came terms with his quite considerable potential at least during the latter phase of his career starting from '90s or so, but that delay of/in self-awareness certainly cost him of reaching the upper echelon of great batsmen he.was certainly destined to be ....
[Aravinda De Silva may not be the most consistent batsman or may not stand among the absolute best in the trade like Viv Richards, etc. due to his lack of temperament/consistency at times, true and well accepted, yet he had been far above-average among his peers/contemporaries for sure. Most importantly, he had the ability to sync with the match situation and deliver as per what was demanded by the situation/context more often than not, even in crunch situations/games. On certain occasions, he failed and even brought dismay given how recklessly he got out, true, but at least he tried and no pretense was involved if you analyse his batting/performances. His strike rate of 80+ in ODIs stands comfortably among the upper echelon of the top-order batsmen who represented his era (from early 80's to early 2000s ...), most of them had their strike rates hovering in 70s and 60s (and some in 50s too ...) back then as the game was not yet tailor-made for aggressive/explosive batting and pretty much each team fielded quality/potent bowing units/attacks. The batsmen who had 80+ strike rates were not all that consistent except for peerless Viv Richards and perhaps (silky smooth) Zaheer Abbas too to a lesser extent, which meant De Silva's runs were always going to be influential/impactful in his era.
De Silva was primarily a backfoot player pulling, hooking and cutting with disdain, still his form was hinted more often than not by how he played on frontfoot early on his innings. In his prime form, even his check drives raced to the boundary bisecting the fielders .... De Silva would have had an even more remarkable career had he fully understood his own abilities and worked on mastering them from his early 20s, he would have then certainly gone down in the history as one of the greatest flamboyant batsmen ever ....] ....

Aravinda was as good as Sachin but a better comparison of style was Viv Richards as Ara was an attacking batsman. He hit the first ball in a test from Kapil Dev for a six. That's why he was known as Mad Max of SL Cricket. Ara was the best batsman produced by SL. Even unlike Tendulkar he was a big match player. He delivered when the pressure was on. Three wickets, two catches and a century against Australia in a world cup final under pressure is the most outstanding individual performance in a world cup final to date. He came into test cricket during Srilanka's civil war and lost his best years. This is a batsman better than Pontin , Kallis and most others and even Warne said there was a touch of genius about him. He did it his way.
