what me ( and my parents did was when i was like 5 i got a macbook (with parent controls) used that (and some other old pcs) intel i was 12 and bult my own pc (with my money) my opinion is when your kid can and wants to they buy there pc and bult it they buy there own games or get them for birthdays or holidays i tried a cromebook and if your kids are older then like 7 it will not work great.

I have been wanting to get my children a laptop instead of tablets. So you can't download apps on the chrome?

You can still download apps from the Google Play Store. I only have Google Chrome on my kids’ computers and that is all they need at the moment. Here is an article that gives more information about the apps for Chromebooks: support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1056325?hl=en

I would be careful with purchasing chrome books for older kids and kids in general. They are inexpensive yes but performance will suffer. As you mentioned they can't do a lot of things a normal laptop can do, especially as kids get older the ways they want to use their laptop will change.
I'm in university and I have a HP stream laptop. It isn't a chrome book but only cost me £200, and it doesn't limit me.

This is a great point! Yes, I was mostly recommending the Chromebook for elementary aged kids since they don’t need much else. Thanks for pointing that out.
