You don't get that a Windows XP computer's performance and OS is terrible compared to modern OS and hardware. It's also not very common anymore to find 14 year old hardware in store. You might as well build a 500$ and buy a Windows key for 13$ or buy them a nice 500-600$ laptop. It's not that expensive, assuming you live in the US.

My Dad bought this laptop in 2014, but a more expensive one. It costed $1000. It was primarily a shared laptop but a few years later, it became my mom's laptop and she still uses it today

Sorry, I was born in 2003 and when I have kids, I’m giving them the childhood I had, filled with DVDs and maybe cable. Add in a nintendo system in the second grade and give them an iPad in the 4th grade. Phone in the 5th Grade. I will not have them on the internet and on phones in their early childhood. Its DVD’s, comics, books, and toys galore.
I just had to do things the difficult way and built my younger brother's desktop.
But it was a gift for his 15th birthday and the pc is 100% his.

I took good care of it, all though my brother loaded it with viruses I can't remove until I do a hard restart.

Okay if your a parent watching this PLEASE read. First of all please do not buy Chromebooks or apple devices for your kids or anyone really this is because your kids might want something more powerful or costomizeable witch will waste you money on new devices or if your kids are smart they will hate you for buying a Chromebook because of lack of functionality. what you should get is a modern gaming PC or you can even build one yourself you could get one for the same price as a Chromebook or MacBook and if they want something more powerful you can actually upgrade the computer instead of buying an entirely new device. also another thing to note is that parents for some reason don't have monitors for their PCs so they use tvs like Roku ones and stuff if your going to buy a new display for the PC get a monitor that says gaming and has 144 Hz you can get them for really cheap and there at least 100x better then the Roku tvs and other big screen tvs for computer use. Most parents just don't understand why they should get this stuff but usually they get the cheapest thing not careing about what they are buying so if your a parent PLEASE do your research and don't buy terrible technology because if your kids are actually smart they would probably hate you if you buy them a Chromebook when they asked for a decent laptop. This actuality happened to me and I actually told them specificly to never buy a Chromebook knowing they would buy one I just don't understand how someone could mess up and get something that can't do anything other then browse the internet. Im just begging you to not buy bad devices like that there are far better options for your kids and buying them a Chromebook and not a full windows desktop can actually limit you and your kids computer literacy because most people actually don't have a desktop computer in there house most people have a old historic terrible desktop computer and even that is far better then a Chromebook those old desktop computers can be upgraded with an SSD and be 1000x faster you can litterally get an SSD for 10 bucks and have a actually really powerful computer. If you're still Wondering what to buy just remember if it says gaming on the packaging then that usually means that it's a good quality product and it will last a long time unless it's an Xbox or playstation or Nintendo please don't buy those under ANY circumstances ever they will ruin your wallet and your children's lives especially if you have boys
Ah yes, if it says GAMING you know it's a good product. LOL. Not everyone needs an extreme amount of GPU horsepower. Dell makes very high quality towers, especially the ones made around the 2010-2012 era. They can be upgraded with solid state drives and can be incredible machines. I agree that Chromebooks are horrible, but most people don't have the patience or skill to build their own computers. Office computers are where it is at in terms of price to performance for everyday tasks

My family has a desktop and when I say family I manly mean me and my dad because my mom rarely uses it same with my brother anyhow we shared up in till last year when I was going into high school Btw at the time I had started a TH-cam channel and my dad had found out anyways. My dad one day went to best buy to go get something other than a laptop and before this you should know that I was planning on getting into photography and become a photographer and my dad had already brought up the subject. Anyhow back to the story so while my dad was at best buy he looked into getting me a laptop and then a hour later he called saying he got me a laptop and was bringing it home it was a laptop that had been returned and it was on discount by a little bit. Anyhow my dad brought it home and then r realised the laptop Hal the webcam at the bottom of the screen which was a problem since I used a web cam on my videos so my dad took it back to the store and got me a really good brand new one it was 4,000 I think but it's well worth it since I plane to use it in high school, possible collage If I go and into adult hood in till it goes bad obviously.

Buy parts for a desktop, never buy Mac if you're looking for performance.
When I was around 7 or 8 I dug out my grandfather's old and long obsolete Dell Dimension machine. It ran Windows XP, came with a 512 MB of DDR RAM, and didn't even support SATA. However, it actually taught me significantly more about computers than being handed a brand new system. I would dual boot different Linux distributions with Windows XP my free time and I had a blast with it. When I was a little older I got involved in the computer recycling program at my father's office, and there was a point where I took home around 10 towers that were getting recycled. I would fix them up, upgrade the hard drives to SSDs, and build awesome machines for my friends and family. I actually had an amazing setup for myself as the machines were still very capable and ran faster than most modern laptops.
My point is, you don't need to spend over $1000 to have a really nice desktop computer. Some of the previous gen Dell OptiPlex machines are getting scrapped left and right from large corporations, and you can pick them up for close to nothing. Paired with an SSD and nice peripherals, you can have a VERY nice setup.

Olliwer Macs can easily dualboot into Windows with Apple’s software known as bootcamp.
They just need to make MacOS an open OS that they sell just like Windows. The hardware that’s in a Mac and what you pay for it is just bad. You can make a pc yourself that is better than a Mac for less. MacOS is a great OS tho.

I think really small kids should have their own, cheap PC with monitoring and restrictions. Slightly older kids, a less cheap PC with basic restrictions. Teens whatever they like with no restrictions. When I was 3, I had a cheap computer, 8 a £300 PC and 11 I saved up for a MacBook. They all just had basic restrictions like malicious websites blocked though.
Go to a school or university that sells off old computers for cheap, pick out a computer, and put an SSD in (optional), and perform a clean install.
