Why has Panerai stopped making such iconic watches like the PAM233/PAM00233 and PAM104/00104!?

233 is phenomenal - i've got the one with the moon circle instead of the am / pm - so good. It's amazing how back then they could figure out where to thread the needle between innovation and keeping to a classic design.

Both watches are beautiful 🤩 Panerai in my opinion is one of the very best watch brands, and are the original strap monsters.
Once you are hooked there is no turning back 🙌

I think the PAM 233 is the ultimate embodiment of Panerai, while still being quite wearable for a daily. If a person came to me asking me which Panerai model should be their only Panerai, PAM 233 would be in my top 3 recommendations, no question.
The PAM 268 would be one of the other 3. Similar to the 233 but in a wearable Radiomir guise (if that person could not get behind the Luminor crown guard). Had the chance to pick one up early this year for about half the current going rate, but I dismissed it at as too similar to the PAM 200. True, but if I was a logical being, I would have one watch and I wouldn't spend my time writing long watch-related comments on YT. :)
Strangely, I have yet to add a PAM 233 to my own collection. Perhaps because, having ~dozen Panerai, I have not needed to combine all the essential elements into just one piece. That said, I am off to Japan next week and have my eye on a gently used PAM 233 that I hope to bring back with me.
I do have the PAM 200, which uses the same movement and was, I believe, the very first (even before the PAM 233) to use this in-house movement (as it is listed as p.2002 versus the PAM 233 p.2002/1, and dates to 2005 vs 2007 for the first 233). Part of why I wanted to add The PAM 200 to the Panerai collection, very cool to have one of the very first in-house Panerai. The white gold Radiomir case is surprisingly different than the stainless steel, once you've experienced it for a bit. I think the p.2002 was the best (non-high horology) movement they made. The zero reset is a very cool and under-utilized complication. A GMT is becoming a favorite complication for me due to my increasingly global life.
A bit of good news I saw recently. The p.2003 is returning in a pair of 44mm Luminors! It would be nice to add a modern GMT to my collection (1482 / 1483). For some odd reason they stopped using an AM/PM indictor on their GMT's for quite some time, perhaps in conjunction with the whole Bi-Temp o thing. This seems to make the watch a little less usable for true globetrotters, so it is nice to see the p.2003 returning. Also hated that they binned hacking seconds (nevermind the zero-reset) on the Luminors for the past number of years. I have a couple of them for aesthetic reasons, and have made something of a game of winding it at just the right moment to sync the second hand with the reference time.
Anyway, just my waffling. I love the brand and have often thought of getting rid of everything else in the collection and just building a cool Panerai collection. :) I like your thought of adding the white dial chrono. I have the PAM 1314 and it is by far the whitest dial I've ever seen on a watch. It looks like freshly fallen snow. I don't like off-white dials, so the 1314 is a keeper. I can imagine that white in a chrono would be outstanding!

Thanks for your thoughtful video mate. IMHO panerai are kind of dammed if they change their lineup dammed if they don’t. To survive in the current climate they have to adapt and innovate to current and new Panerai lovers, less they get left behind and worse, shut their doors. Let’s give them all the praise where we can and support this very important brand.

I thought 233 would be continued forever as the icon of Panerai. I missed the chance to purchase it long time ago. The same thing can be said to 372/422/423. 422 came back and luckily I could get a 422. One of the common points for 233 and Monopulsante 317 as well as 372/422 brothers are iconic domed shape, which is costy. That means the reason might be cost saving. To be honest, I think it may cost more for the brand to save money but lose its iconic models. I hope Panerai will produce more iconic domed crystal models with P.2000/3000 calibres, not only cost saving caribres.

I was tracking the 233 in 2021; when I was finally ready in Feb 2022, the concierge said the last one in their system was sold in Jan. The 233 and 24 are still on my short list 😂

Sorry to hear that you weren’t able to get it through Panerai. Interestingly I got mine from Panerai through my AD on Sept 2022… Somehow strange, they told you it was sold out in Jan 2022. Maybe that was based on your region?

Perhaps, they said in their worldwide system but they may not be able to see what is at the ADs. I enjoy channels that speak from ownership experience and passion for the pieces. Look forward to your future content!
