You the best bro! You are so friendly and good at teaching this and this is just what i needed :) I always have trouble getting the right colors and setting a mood in my drawings but i will def try this technique next time. Also a shout out to the Zelda mug and a big thumbs up for showing all the neat tricks like the screenshot swatch. Thank you. Just wanted to say that there’s nothing wrong with having a Patreon account. I support few artists on there and it’s the main source of income for a lot of creatives. It’s just doesn’t make sense from here right now as there would be next to nothing left to me after the cuts in the process. Because of the laws in the country I live in. In the name of honesty I just had to say that there’s nothing wrong with trying to make money. Lord knows it’s really hard for any artist out there. Also running a TH-cam channel can be pretty expensive so if anyone out there has ads or stuff on their videos please don’t hold it against them. The reason why the lights are so dark in my talking head clips is just because I’m still saving money to get proper light for filming these. Yes it’s possible to just start with nothing and start uploading but if you look at my first 5 videos and the latest ones the difference is not just editing. There’s a lot of software and hardware costs in just getting the sound volume up. This is right now basically just one of my hobbies so I invest in it like anything else with time and money. I’m going to pin this comment because while this might not be a fun thing to hear, I hope everyone can have a bit of perspective when you see those beginner artists out there just trying to survive. Also I love that Zelda mug! I just wish it was 3 times bigger. Come on Nintendo please don’t make a guy do cardio while trying to have a nice bucket of coffee ☕️
@@angrymikko Yea, i love to support people also BUT the problem i have with patreon is that so many people use it the wrong way. No judgment here. Like said: I don’t think doing TH-cam is cheap, especially if you don’t have any gear at the start.

Amazing. This video is underrated. I've watched hours and hours of digital painting courses but never heard anyone talking about this. Out of all the tutorials I've watched on painting, this is probably the number one when it comes to color. You literally changed my perspective and to be honest, I feel bad because I've never thought of it myself. I guess it's something pros take from granted. Cheers again and thanks a lot!
I have spent many, many hours watching your videos and livestreams, Mikko, and for my own learning this is your best so far. It has filled a large gap in my knowledge, Thank you so much for being so generous and free with your time and expertise. It is very much appreciated. You rock man!

I definitely will use this information about the warm and cold variations, because I like your colors a lot and I am definitely using too much and too saturated colors. So thanks a lot.
I've always been a pencil artist, and I never liked coloring my art in highschool because it always seemed to ruin my drawings. I'm 26 now and I love watching your videos, I always learn so much. Today I have some new color wisdom to apply to my arts, thank you Mikko🙏💖
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much for explaining this so clearly. I think you not only helped me become a better artist, but you also helped raise my IQ a couple of points. Now I’ll probably stay up all night watching your videos.
There was a long period when I thought they're useful for only graphic design but it's really no different than mixing a palette when you're doing an oil painting. The same benefits of consistency and speed will be apparent in the end result. In this video it takes a bit more time as I'm explaining the grouping mechanics and colour theory based on which I do the picks but honestly it takes no longer than 2 minutes to do a palette. ONE MORE THING! This is absolutely something that I do on the phone in procreate ALL the time. When you don't have time or access to iPad you can just make a palette on your phone. You don't even need a stylus I just use my thumbs and then I export the palette to the ipad when I can.
@@angrymikko Haha wow thank you so much for the long reply! I really admire your work and the focus you put on image mood and colors - your consideration in those aspects really, really shows and makes your pieces pop. Honestly yeah, I used to think palettes were a waste of time aside from putting together colors for fanciful characters. But I've had a problem for a while in deciding background colors (I usually suffer from the problem of deliberating between two many) and usually gave up color picking from photos due to the problem of the random "rainbow colored" pixels mucking up the problem (Will definitely have to try the Gaussian blur trick!) But I can definitely see now how palettes will be helpful to speed up the background painting process. Thanks for these videos! The tips in "Using Gray" and "Analogous Colors" are very helpful as well, I'm eager to put them to work :D

Good morning, i pray everything is well. In your opinion, what would be the best (versatile / useful) color to start learning? You said you’ve been practicing purples because you are weaker with purples. Im just now starting, what would be your recommendation color to learn first for a beginner? Thanks for your time and consideration!
I recommend doing the analogous colours exercise with your favourite colour first. It is a good exercise to do to iron out weak spots but for a beginner I’d definitely recommend a colour that you actually like. Depending on how narrow you make your hue pie the exercise will be hard enough anyway.
@@angrymikko It is really difficult. Not only am I learning but I 'm doubting a lot because I have not mastered the concept. I will be studying your videos. On that note thank you for posting them. I have a lot of questions, however I am going to try to answer them by rewatching or researching first. Awesome videos! i'm not sure how I found your videos but I am sure blessed to have done so. Keep inspiring! You're a superhero changing the world. thanks again.
What brush did you use for the painting at the end? I find it so difficult to paint landscape and blend the layers in procreate than using traditional paints and brush and canvas, maybe I'm missing out on a good brush?
It’s the same brush for the entire painting. This one is my MikkoRull brush. I recommend watching “best brush for digital painting” video if you’re having difficulty with that and then just make a brush that fits that description for your style.
Weird question, but i was wondering, if I draw something by following your steps in a livestream or something, then have a pretty similar drawing, but then I do not post it or use it for anything, is that copyright?
I didn’t always use palettes before but having made a bunch to choose from now they’re a really important part of my workflow. Just takes a lot of tedious slowness away from the beginning when I just want to slap some shapes down as quickly as possible.
In hindsight, creating a palette of limited colours probably should make sense.. I mean, traditional artists dont walk around with 5000 paint tubes, why would we? 😅. And especially in an environment scene where the sun and the blue of the sky pull all the colours you see closer in relation because of how light bounces. 30 is probably a good maximum. And you can make your own palette in any program really.. if it doesnt have the sofware built in, make a new layer and make a grid with 30 boxes, then fill in each box. Whenever you want to colour pick, turn the layer on, colour pick, and then hide it again. Much like a traditional artist does on their wooden palettes.. Bob Ross may have been onto something with the colours he always picked.
Taking a screenshot of your colour palette is cheating. The way you convey what you mean without actually teaching is phenomenal. Where were art teachers like you when I did art? I never completed my course. Then I saw your stuff on TH-cam. Understanding when you have synesthesia is really hard. You talk about colour and I taste and hear different. But I am actually learning watching your videos. I love art. I love painting but no teacher could ever teach me. Now my paintings don’t look so “colourful” and in your face and I sold one. 🥳🥳🥳🥳
