  • Build a bridge from Earth to the Moon they said. It won't be possible they said. Ha! No problem! This is Space Busters where we do crazy stuff like this all the time! So no way was I going to pass up the opportunity to put Space Engineers to the test!
    Can we build a bridge connecting the Earth and the Moon? In this episode of Space Busters, we're sure as heck gonna find out!
    If you like the video, be sure to leave comments and hit that like button! That's how I know to make more of these!

      Because it would no longer be aligned. Notice how the structure is at an angle: This means it would have to be at an angle on the ground, which isn't possible without a motor to turn it.
      It could be done from the ground regardless, but that would require manually going to the moon straight up and straight down multiple times, nullifying the whole point of alignment. Plus, there's no guarantee even that would work due to the curvature of the planet.

    • @Cyberguy42
      @Cyberguy42 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@stefanm.734 You can adjust the orientation of a blueprint before pasting it. IIRC, all that would be needed is aligning it to point at the moon and positioning it such that it intersects with the voxels (making it a station). @@AndrewmanGaming You could make a single structure from earth to the moon, but you need to make it thinner, one single line of blocks should do it with no problems, then you could attach an elevator to it. (a single block has 2.5 meters so 120km will be like, 48k blocks well within the engine limits). This will answer yes to all the questions. It's doable, you just need to be very tight on the design. The only issue I see here is that your base grid will intersect two separate voxels entities (earth and moon), and I really don't know what the engine will do with that. Interesting to see tho ;)

      I'm pretty sure it's something like each block's position is stored as a some-number-of-bits coordinate, so the limit isn't an intended limit for gameplay purposes, more of a "we didn't think anybody would ever need to exceed this so we called it good at x number of bits" sorta limit. like, it'd be pretty incredibly rare for anybody to want to make something more than even 10km in length, much less 100km.

      @MaxMustermann-ey5sc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Aracnah Even without a hardcoded block limit, it does probably not work because of the way game engines make spherical worlds. I am not sure about SE but most other games use a two dimensional plane and the sphere is created by wrapping the plane around a sphere as you go further away. Blocks and Player made structures are most likely not included in this because wrapping a texture map around a sphere is easier than doing so with geometry. One approach would be to use an actual round sphere for the planet and make the building system normal based. But that comes with another problem, on ground, your Block is 1m2 in a few km height, your Block will be 2m2. But still, this would enable you to create make such a structure

    • @michaelguth4007
      @michaelguth4007 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MaxMustermann-ey5sc Planets in space engineers are 3 dimensional objects. The amount of blocks the engine can handle is the real limit. The smallest planet has about 19 km diameter, so let's assume the dyson sphere would be 20k in diameter, giving a 500m "sky". This requires a surface area of more than 5,000,000,000 m².
      I would guess about 1,000,000,000 (a billion) basic armor blocks are required, +- 200 millions.
      Yet with modded blocks, it could be done with alot less. 100x100x1 blocks with reduced primitives for deformation would help alot. It would still apply to grid space limits, but would count as a single block with only a very few triangles for graphical calculations.

  • @Neyar
    @Neyar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    There is an in-game limit of something like 8200 blocks in any direction on a single grid (splitting the grid doesn't change the limit, but starting a new grid resets back to zero basically, like you did). Check out EpicTek's season 2 episode 34 and 35, he ran into the same thing and got some info from the devs on why this occurs. (Edit: autocorrect)

    2) you can do laser aiming - just build a really, really, really long beam that is one block wide and one block tall, then blueprint it and load it into a projector. Bam! I know a guy who carries around a blueprint that's over 50km long for aiming and such like

    Physical shapes limit is a hard limit (max is 65535) responsible for storing the collision mesh for a grid.
    I ran into this issue myself but it can be bypassed. The limit applies to only a single grid which means any subgrids each have their own limit.
    By chaining grids together with pistons or rotors you can create a seemingly seamless grid with as many blocks as you want.
    Will still affect performance though.

    You should have built a bridge that's tangential to both the planet's and the moon's surface. That means it starts off horizontally and thus you can literally walk out to space as gravity gradually falls off. Although this would require a bridge that's longer with the sum of radius of the two bodies, and incredibly precise aim to barely touch the surface of the moon, but not miss it.

    The grid becomes too large and the blocks that are grounded on the earth start to clip through the voxels and the blocks that are still touchable begin to collide with the voxels and it melts your computer so you better be glad it crashed your game than your whole computer.
    Even on the most advanced computers you will not be able to do that.
    I tried fixing that problem using merge blocks. Don't. This WILL melt down your computer.
    What I did not try yet was building a bridge using connectors. A segment of about 100 blocks in height. Each end has a connector. They technically don't become one grid.
    My idea what you can try and keep pasting:
    Build a bridge that has a seat in the middle, a camera at the bottom end to be able to see and make sure the bridge segment is aligned properly, a gyroscope, atmospheric thrusters/ion thrusters and reactors. Connect the bridge, remove everything, build a battery, put solar panels around the bridge on the sides and last but not least, gravity generator.
    Let me know what you think. I might give it a try myself.

    I did ask this on a previous video but I am curious to what would happen if you tried constructing a bridge around an entire planet or moon so that it makes a loop, then blow up all the supports at once. Which way would it fall? It couldn't fall downwards since downwards is upwards on the opposite hemisphere, so would it simply float in place? Perhaps it would start spinning? Who knows. I think this would be an interesting thing for you to try in a future episode. Seeing the structure in the video makes me pretty confident that such a structure can be created, however it might a bit more time consuming since you'd have to make the bridge curved so it could follow the surface smoothly.

    Other way to try is a blueprint projector built into the segment blueprint and a vehicle built to both climb it and build as it goes.
    Iv seen that sort of thing done before “tho usually to either dig down or just go across the planet”.

    If i wanna do this, i would recommend 2 horizontal spots (when u just barely see the moon, and just barely see the earth from the moon), then u can go over with a rover and some gravity assist) just an idea :)

    With a bit of patience and a smaller bridge piece, I would imagine it would be possible to place the 2nd part of the bridge so close that it basically doesn't exists.

    it's possible to use connectors under the bridge and continue puting blocks that hide the connectors, visually it will look like a single large grid.

    It may be possible to do if you had a machine building the bridge manually. The issues of the none collision blocks is very possibly rooted in the method that theyre created. Even on the new bridge, you were only lucky with how it chose what blocks to be solid.

    Probably a hard limit to the number of blocks which may be connected to one another. Drop the guard rails and go with a 1 or 2 block surface, and you should in theory, be able to double the distance you can place blocks.

    With the aiming component you can make a stupid complex ground to air cannon. Maybe it could be larger so you can put multiple modded forward facing cannons or lasers and shoot down invading dreadnoughts/capital ships
    Weapon suggestion would be the atlas laser in a circular formation around the cockpit

    I would have used a gyroscope with the rotors with a small amount of braking force, just enough to stop the gyroscope if you're not trying to move but not enough to fully lock it in place!

    add a conveyer line, maybe a docking station in the middle for space mining and connect it to mars, a few mining drones or auto mining outposts and your set for life. 1 base, 3 planets, its perfect.

    aiming might have been a tad bit easier if you started from the moon :). you know, larger target, that kinda thing. also, with the orbital tethers in general, lowering a tether, built in space would probably be a little easier than building up from the ground. would need a bunch of thrusters to keep it from stabbing the planet, but it would work.

      Well, the moon orbits around the earth in a non-geostationary orbit. So Space Engineers is incredibly unrealistic.
      Geostationary Orbit is when you are orbiting at the same speed as the earth rotation so you would always be visible from earth/stay in the same spot relative to the ground.
      sooo... it wouldn't work in real life.

    • @elnico5623
      @elnico5623 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fredskerbaladventures4091 you just gotta pull the moon back in into a geostationary orbit and build a giant stick
