As much as I agree with the many flaws, there's still something satisfyingly entertaining about the gameplay loop of guards noticing a growing pile of unconscious or dead bodies and blindly investigating it like lemmings and then getting the ghost bonus because none of them had a chance to see you "Hmmmm, Steve just checked and now he's part of the pile, I should walk over there calmly to investigate"
Just curious; when you say they are "shitty microtransactions" is that just you saying you hate all microtransactions or that the one ones in this one are shitty as opposed to others. Because if you hate them all, well you're just an entitled gamer that I have no time for. Damian Let us say for the sake of argument that you are correct, and that the microtransactions here don't affect gameplay (I disagree, but let's just say they don't). If something doesn't affect gameplay, add atmosphere, or make an artistic statement then why bother having it? If it doesn't offer anything of value then it has no right to exist. Microtransactions CAN be good (if well explained, implemented fairly, priced in accordance with the game's cost, and subject to market changes) but if they just exist for the sake of existing then...why bother having them exist?
George Sears I've played the game for over a hundred and thirty hours over five different play though. I can state for a fact that I've not once even considered purchasing them because (and this is proof that it doesn't affect gameplay) I end up with around 20-30K left over and a few Neuropazyne bottles as well when it's over. AND unlike in some AC games where it keeps pestering you to buy them, I didn't even know MC (microtransactions because I don't want ot spell out that word every time we mention it) existed until midway through my second playthrough when I was looking to change my outfit. But back to the "if it's not needed then why bother" question, there's two fundamental problems with this question. First, to directly answer the question, there are some people out there that want this sort of thing due to either laziness, or lack of time to really go searching and do all the side question or just want to thank the developer at the same time. It's the same reason people will purchase indie games, or even AAA games instead of pirating; people aren't usually jerks. Which brings me to my second point and that is how in society we've been brainwashed through every media source that businesses are evil (hell, Deus Ex even does this). And so, if a company wants to make more money it's just considered "greedy" regardless of if they truly are compromising the experience for it. A company making extra money isn't a bad thing, but much like with anything else in the world, there is a point where it can cross the line and become excessive. As I covered in the second paragraph, this is clearly not one of those cases.
Yatzi, Human revolution was a damn good game. Not great like the first one - but damn god. Me I'm boycotting the new one until it's on a steam sale, due to Eidos's dumbe decision to include microtransactions in Single Player.
Seems like there would have been a lot more mileage focusing on the class disparities that leave poor people trying to scrape together the money to buy the drugs they need to survive after only being augmented because they were injured.
In Deus Ex: Black Light they do a fantastic job of that. Everyone is desperate enough for Neuropozine that they raided the Sarif building once mainstream affordable supply ran out. A book-only character, Stacks, gives his last dose to a homeless man that was getting close to the psychosis phase and (spoilers) ends up having pyschosis himself as a result of not having any. The problem with this is that its all in a *book* instead of the actual game. All that in the book should have been done in the game instead. How Jensen survived and escaped the arctic impound, the struggles of the underclass vs the elites that already have all the neuropozine they need to live, what happened to Pritchard, joining task force 29, etc. The game just sort of assumes you read the book, which is terrible story design for a game.
As soon as I looked and watched all the reviews, I came to the conclusion of how accurate the title is. We really are, as mankind, divided on this game. Even Steam has mixed reviews, haha.
There needs to be more insights like this. All triple A sequels are practically shovelware. There's nothing new, ever. It needs to stop and the only way is for guys like Yahtzee to keep pointing it out.

The people on Reddit are a pita. I'd go research your own opinion. One forum I would look at is bit-tech.net, UK based stil international, the guys there are pretty good, and don;t blow smoke up your arse, despite being mostly a community of modders. Also, with the consoles, don't forget the subscription based online stuff. It's not a great deal of money to some, but it adds up over time.
Mhmm, There's also that. When you go looking for reviews on releases it's always the same though, they look at the game as if nothing else exists but that. They look at playability, graphics, options, what you can do etc etc, but never compare it properly to other titles that're out there, and if they do they'll just make it look better to whatever previous benchmark they have for that series. Also, there's things like the "must have" initiative for some people, especially the young people, who just don't care if it's better, just newer. TB is good for tech stuff, Yahtzee for a good idea of how it's going to be to live with the game, if it's gonna raise the bar or not. If either of the two haven't had a rant about it, I'll go looking for other sources of info or just hold out til it's in the bargain bin. I've had too many sherberts so I'm done now lol.

It's alright! The DLC was completely tacked on at the last second by executive decree and don't actually fit into the game at all. At least form what I've heard. I mean, it's still shitty that they're there, but apparently you can ignore them completely without it actually hurting your gameplay because the game wasn't designed for them. That is of course if you can get over the fact that they turned Deus Ex's story into such a crappy simplistic nonsensical allegory.

Coming back to this after rewatching Accursed Farms reviews on DX series and I'm still wishing for a collaboration between you two on a series like this, both of your insights are different and fairly unique and I'd love to see both of you bounce topics between one another.
They don't argue an "Anti-Aug" platform very well in the game. Partly because Eliza Cassan is awful. I get it. She's an AI. Yet she's a robot designed to convince other people of a fictionalized truth. She fails in her primary purpose and it weakens the complexity of the game's argument. Propose the following exercise where we concisely argue for the "villains" - from a non-conspirator's angle: Augmented individuals spiraled out of control and killed millions of people. Millions. The world over. The world is split ocer creating new augmentations - a dampening chip - that would allow governments the ability to shut down a person's augmentations and, by extension, their free will in the event of another crisis. Citizens that do not allow for the mandatory surgery will have their augmentations removed. You could argue that restricting someone's free will with a chip is no different than the laws civilians must obey every day. If a person goes crazy, we have a police force to restrain them. In the case of an aug, the police could rely on signals to the dampening chip that would safely disable an aug's ability to harm themselves and others. The segregation of the augmented population is seen as necessary because if these people lose control, their murder spree will be better contained. The city of Prague has been plagued by terrorist strikes, and the population is paralyzed with fear. The train bombing at the beginning of the game is the third terrorist strike in two years, if I recall? The outcry is not unrealistic. As a personal aside, I remember travelling Paris after the Madrid train bombings in 2004. I remember the armed soldiers on patrol as a show of security. In one event, I missed my subway train (I think I was heading to Versailles at the time) and while I was waiting for the next - all alone - armed soldiers escorted civilians onto the subway platform across the tracks from me. The civilians were stripped down and searched. The game may be ham-handed in its delivery at times, but the abstractions are not wholly unrealistic. It might be a possible future as our technology allows us to be more restrictive and invasive.
I'm pretty sure in one of Jim Sterlings videos on this game he said someone on the inside told him it may have been split into 2 games which explains why it feels so short.

My main issue with the game is the stupid cutscene it goes into whenever you do something, seriously why the fuck is there a cutscene for stealth killing someone? I don't want to go to a cutscene where I give the guy a chokeslam, I just want to strangle him silently until he's unconscious or snap his neck, you know... like an actual STEALTH game, fuck me I feel like whenever stealth killing someone I've started a WWE match and it always ends with a big RKO or something, so dumb and it kills the immersion.

Human Revolution was a game with a lot of heart and soul put into it. I'd argue it's far better than "OK" especially when put next to other RPG's these days like Fallout 4.

This is a game that tries to be an allegory for racism/ social differences but utterly fails to give both sides a fair view. Is it racism or is it just people afraid that the AUGS will be sent into kill mode again. Just fails on so many levels to address these issues and comes off as a video game using controversial topics as a means of making money.

Just my opinion: I don't recall any point in the game where they say the fear of Augs isn't justified. Jensen is constantly conceding the point. The issue now is that people don't know if Augs are safe, even though what happened wasn't their fault and entirely caused by an outside motivator. It's a short hand for unjustified social segregation. It's established that the Augs had an "episode" of sorts and it isn't their fault that it happened. Many of the Augs you meet are in fact deeply remourseful. I appreciate it as a way of having a topic like segregation in the game while leaving it up to you to decide if it's justified or not. The game deals almost entirely in grey except for the choices you make as a player.
After having just playing the game I have to say your comment is full of shit. The game does give a detailed and rational account of the social divide caused by augmentation technology, which is further aggravated by the Illuminati conspiracy controlling mass media in order to direct hatred towards the augmented population. All you did was repeat what Yahtzee but without any of the comedy in order to get likes from those who just watched the video and thus are more inclined to agree with you.
"Let's use this game to talk about current race relations, Islamophobia and the Syrian refugee crisis!" "Great idea, sir! How do you want to approach these complex and sensitive issues?" "Spray paint 'Aug lives matter' on the walls of the slums they're forced to live in and call it a day." "Brilliant, sir. Simply brilliant."
The core problem of this game was something Yahtzee never touched upon: with the open-ish city and the interesting exploration toolset available to the player, the exploration toolset progression should've been used to turn the game into a 3-D Metroidvania. It would've been brilliant.
I can't wait for Deus Ex: Fanbase Divided 2 Electric Boogaloo, just to see if Square Enix will have the balls to *ahem* divide the remaining half of this game in another two halves for a wonterful, filled-to-the-breach quadrology.
When compared to the original Deus Ex, Human Revolution can seem a fair bit underwhelming. From the perspective of someone who grew up with the first Deus Ex (Yahtzee), you can see how he can find it just "okay".
He didn't take notice about what was good about MD over Deus Ex either. The level design was actually amazing, and had so many more clever options while retaining pretty realistic building design that it beats out Deus Ex. The bank is probably the best example of this. Even the game-play has matured a lot more, with the new experimental augs being a blast to play with and the game allowing proper "from cover" takedowns that actually throw the body behind you so you dont have to pull them yourself. I also didn't like the comment about how "augs are everywhere" in this game, and not in Deus Ex, when i'm fairly sure the Human Restoration act (that was the main focus in the game) will get passed eventually, in some form, and thus will be the reason for a huge lack of mechanical augs.
I'd say a reasonable dividing line between 'augmented' and 'not' would be whether you got an artificial thing (prosthetic or implant) to save your life or improve its quality (pace makers, prosthetic limbs that function like human limbs) or got a perfectly good organic part of you chopped out to make room for some sort of concealed piece of military hardware. A guy who got a hand crushed and needed a replacement is a bit different to one who got the full arm and part of the rib cage replaced with a piece of excavation equipment with three shotguns attached and an extra leg to help with the weight. Even if there isn't a switch that makes all the cyborgs want to kill everything, the latter guy probably already does. If you're skeet shooting you only need one shotgun and it doesn't have to have explosive slugs that fragment into into kill-crazed cybernetic spiders.
Then you realise that Eidos-Montreal and Squeenix were blatantly padding this series out for a trilogy Tomb Raider Reboot-style, and had to chuck it in without finishing it. Fuck this games industry.
id like to see sequels that used the saved game data of the prior games to influence the plot/story/mechanics of the sequel. Just imagine how much replay ability you would have

About the writing of HR, I loved the world building and some back stories/histories. But what actually happened in the game didn't engage me as much because I felt like I was mostly chasing some unknown generic badguys around the globe.

Always love your reviews but I was just listening to Mogworld again and was wondering if you're writing another book anytime soon? Mogworld was an instant favorite for me and Jam was great.
I liked it. But then again, I spent my time messing around with side missions and just over all doing stuff. It did feel short, but I expected it to be because it felt like the quality of detail was higher.
It's a great way to kill the time and worth a go once around but that's about it. Thing that kinda erked me was "oooo look you have 2 choices do this mission or that one," but whichever you choose you still end up at the same next mission.
Thing is, I'm pretty sure Deus Ex is only using the augmentation-racism parallel as part of a greater commentary on paranoia and the media as a whole, which is certainly relevant today, and such a narrative could be traced back to the original Deus Ex too.
Same issue I have with the omnic sideplot in Overwatch tbh. Yeah people fear and distrust omnics. Because barely 2 decades ago they tried their level best to wipe humanity off the face of the earth like bugs off a windshield. I don't call that racism, I call that fairly understandable.
This game has more loose ends than a public restroom inhabited by George Michael. They bring up a million and one factions like the MachineGod, the Collective, the Mob, and even the fucking Illuminati (again) and none of it concludes. This is sequel-bait at it's finest. It absolutely could have fit into one game. It cuts off harder than Brock Lesnar preforming a circumcision.
The whole aug racism thing has one pretty big plot hole. What if someone needs augments? For example, say someone loses an arm in a horrible accident and gets an augment prosthetic arm. Would they be oppressed just because they chose to get augments because of an accident that was beyond control? No because that makes naturals sound like assholes
There's a guy in one part of the game you speak with briefly. The guy has a limp due to a leg that doesn't work. He chooses not to get an electronic one and just continue living with a prosthetic or something. So yeah. They'd discriminate regardless of why you have them. Hell, Jensen got them due to being in a terrorist attack at the start of Human Revolution. I don't view it as a plot hole. There are people like that already in the world who treat even pacemakers as unnatural and against god's will. The bigger plot hole I find is that they chose the Czech Republic as the setting for this movement. Poland I could understand as it's a heavily catholic country... But Czechs are some of the least religious people on earth.
You don't have to be religeous to have an unhealthy and irrational obsession with being "natural". I can safely say that, while it probably wouldn't be to the same degree shown in the games, a decent chunk of asshats would indeed treat augmented people like scum.
Jensen makes that argument in Human Revolution actually. I forgot who he was talking to at that point but the response is the same response you get from anyone you give perception to their bigoted view: "I know some people NEED it and i get that, but i still hate them >:I"

I think Yahtz has just started using actual dongers in his reviews instead of what I could only have guessed were dildos just in an attempt to see what he can get through the censor brigade. This is only a guess though.
Human Revolution was bigger than Mankind Divided in every way. It was longer, but more importantly the plot happened on a much larger scale while also giving you more investment because problems were your own. HR is about unraveling a global conspiracy, whereas MD is about stopping a small plan that conspiracy has hatched. It's also weird they took out the interesting gun mods, like lock-on and explosive rounds, and completely scrapped heavy weapons other than the grenade launcher.
Its weird too, because, iirc from the ending options especially, in Human Revolution the class divide actually still did factor into it. Not everyone could own augmentation, only those rich or willing to be the upper class's bitches/go into debt. Jensen's company flat out owning his ass (as in literally leasing him the ass he was currently using) was definitely touched upon and the famous 'I didn't ask for this' was reflecting on Jensen's feelings regarding everything from how augs are viewed in society as outcasts or subhuman, to how much he owes the company who, effectively, rendered him an indentured servant while unconscious. The game tried to juggle both. That they decided that might be too hard for the sequel is a bit of a bummer.

Just curious; when you say they are "shitty microtransactions" is that just you saying you hate all microtransactions or that the one ones in this one are shitty as opposed to others. Because if you hate them all, well you're just an entitled gamer that I have no time for. However, if you honestly think the ones in this game that don't interfere with the gameplay or shitty, well you just haven't played the game or have your head so far up your ass you can give yourself a colonoscopy.
Damian Let us say for the sake of argument that you are correct, and that the microtransactions here don't affect gameplay (I disagree, but let's just say they don't). If something doesn't affect gameplay, add atmosphere, or make an artistic statement then why bother having it? If it doesn't offer anything of value then it has no right to exist. Microtransactions CAN be good (if well explained, implemented fairly, priced in accordance with the game's cost, and subject to market changes) but if they just exist for the sake of existing then...why bother having them exist?
George Sears I've played the game for over a hundred and thirty hours over five different play though. I can state for a fact that I've not once even considered purchasing them because (and this is proof that it doesn't affect gameplay) I end up with around 20-30K left over and a few Neuropazyne bottles as well when it's over. AND unlike in some AC games where it keeps pestering you to buy them, I didn't even know MC (microtransactions because I don't want ot spell out that word every time we mention it) existed until midway through my second playthrough when I was looking to change my outfit.
But back to the "if it's not needed then why bother" question, there's two fundamental problems with this question. First, to directly answer the question, there are some people out there that want this sort of thing due to either laziness, or lack of time to really go searching and do all the side question or just want to thank the developer at the same time. It's the same reason people will purchase indie games, or even AAA games instead of pirating; people aren't usually jerks.
Which brings me to my second point and that is how in society we've been brainwashed through every media source that businesses are evil (hell, Deus Ex even does this). And so, if a company wants to make more money it's just considered "greedy" regardless of if they truly are compromising the experience for it. A company making extra money isn't a bad thing, but much like with anything else in the world, there is a point where it can cross the line and become excessive.
As I covered in the second paragraph, this is clearly not one of those cases.

Yatzi, Human revolution was a damn good game. Not great like the first one - but damn god.
Me I'm boycotting the new one until it's on a steam sale, due to Eidos's dumbe decision to include microtransactions in Single Player.
Seems like there would have been a lot more mileage focusing on the class disparities that leave poor people trying to scrape together the money to buy the drugs they need to survive after only being augmented because they were injured.
In Deus Ex: Black Light they do a fantastic job of that. Everyone is desperate enough for Neuropozine that they raided the Sarif building once mainstream affordable supply ran out. A book-only character, Stacks, gives his last dose to a homeless man that was getting close to the psychosis phase and (spoilers) ends up having pyschosis himself as a result of not having any.
The problem with this is that its all in a *book* instead of the actual game. All that in the book should have been done in the game instead. How Jensen survived and escaped the arctic impound, the struggles of the underclass vs the elites that already have all the neuropozine they need to live, what happened to Pritchard, joining task force 29, etc.
The game just sort of assumes you read the book, which is terrible story design for a game.

As soon as I looked and watched all the reviews, I came to the conclusion of how accurate the title is. We really are, as mankind, divided on this game. Even Steam has mixed reviews, haha.
There needs to be more insights like this. All triple A sequels are practically shovelware. There's nothing new, ever. It needs to stop and the only way is for guys like Yahtzee to keep pointing it out.
True, Yahtzee already put me off whatever the NX turns out to be, now I don't know whether to bother getting an Xbone or PS4.

The people on Reddit are a pita. I'd go research your own opinion. One forum I would look at is bit-tech.net, UK based stil international, the guys there are pretty good, and don;t blow smoke up your arse, despite being mostly a community of modders.
Also, with the consoles, don't forget the subscription based online stuff. It's not a great deal of money to some, but it adds up over time.

When you go looking for reviews on releases it's always the same though, they look at the game as if nothing else exists but that. They look at playability, graphics, options, what you can do etc etc, but never compare it properly to other titles that're out there, and if they do they'll just make it look better to whatever previous benchmark they have for that series.
Also, there's things like the "must have" initiative for some people, especially the young people, who just don't care if it's better, just newer.
TB is good for tech stuff, Yahtzee for a good idea of how it's going to be to live with the game, if it's gonna raise the bar or not. If either of the two haven't had a rant about it, I'll go looking for other sources of info or just hold out til it's in the bargain bin.

The dlc is mostly side stories. The second half is in a sequel. Eidos has been making Deus Ex Prequel #3 a year before Mankind Divided came out.
It's alright! The DLC was completely tacked on at the last second by executive decree and don't actually fit into the game at all. At least form what I've heard. I mean, it's still shitty that they're there, but apparently you can ignore them completely without it actually hurting your gameplay because the game wasn't designed for them. That is of course if you can get over the fact that they turned Deus Ex's story into such a crappy simplistic nonsensical allegory.
Sadly, but that's only because lovely Square Enix Europe thought it would be a good idea to cut the dev team into 2 teams to make 2 games.

Coming back to this after rewatching Accursed Farms reviews on DX series and I'm still wishing for a collaboration between you two on a series like this, both of your insights are different and fairly unique and I'd love to see both of you bounce topics between one another.

They don't argue an "Anti-Aug" platform very well in the game. Partly because Eliza Cassan is awful. I get it. She's an AI. Yet she's a robot designed to convince other people of a fictionalized truth. She fails in her primary purpose and it weakens the complexity of the game's argument.
Propose the following exercise where we concisely argue for the "villains" - from a non-conspirator's angle:
Augmented individuals spiraled out of control and killed millions of people. Millions. The world over. The world is split ocer creating new augmentations - a dampening chip - that would allow governments the ability to shut down a person's augmentations and, by extension, their free will in the event of another crisis. Citizens that do not allow for the mandatory surgery will have their augmentations removed. You could argue that restricting someone's free will with a chip is no different than the laws civilians must obey every day. If a person goes crazy, we have a police force to restrain them. In the case of an aug, the police could rely on signals to the dampening chip that would safely disable an aug's ability to harm themselves and others.
The segregation of the augmented population is seen as necessary because if these people lose control, their murder spree will be better contained. The city of Prague has been plagued by terrorist strikes, and the population is paralyzed with fear. The train bombing at the beginning of the game is the third terrorist strike in two years, if I recall? The outcry is not unrealistic.
As a personal aside, I remember travelling Paris after the Madrid train bombings in 2004. I remember the armed soldiers on patrol as a show of security. In one event, I missed my subway train (I think I was heading to Versailles at the time) and while I was waiting for the next - all alone - armed soldiers escorted civilians onto the subway platform across the tracks from me. The civilians were stripped down and searched.
The game may be ham-handed in its delivery at times, but the abstractions are not wholly unrealistic. It might be a possible future as our technology allows us to be more restrictive and invasive.
I'm pretty sure in one of Jim Sterlings videos on this game he said someone on the inside told him it may have been split into 2 games which explains why it feels so short.

My main issue with the game is the stupid cutscene it goes into whenever you do something, seriously why the fuck is there a cutscene for stealth killing someone? I don't want to go to a cutscene where I give the guy a chokeslam, I just want to strangle him silently until he's unconscious or snap his neck, you know... like an actual STEALTH game, fuck me I feel like whenever stealth killing someone I've started a WWE match and it always ends with a big RKO or something, so dumb and it kills the immersion.

Human Revolution was a game with a lot of heart and soul put into it. I'd argue it's far better than "OK" especially when put next to other RPG's these days like Fallout 4.
But it's being compared to the original Deus ex, it has bigger shoes to fill (sure 4 was compared to new vegas)

I counted 53 Dvali gangsters and robots in the penultimate mission , In and around the movie theater , marked all of them.
This is a game that tries to be an allegory for racism/ social differences but utterly fails to give both sides a fair view. Is it racism or is it just people afraid that the AUGS will be sent into kill mode again.
Just fails on so many levels to address these issues and comes off as a video game using controversial topics as a means of making money.
I really don't think it's trying to draw allegories to real world racism, apart from that one poster in the trailer that was done before the game was.

Andrew Bradshaw yeah, the basics of apartheid are present, but, like Yahtzee said, it's actually justified, it's a different type of discrimination, where the reaction is justified. But the treatment is not.
Just my opinion: I don't recall any point in the game where they say the fear of Augs isn't justified. Jensen is constantly conceding the point. The issue now is that people don't know if Augs are safe, even though what happened wasn't their fault and entirely caused by an outside motivator. It's a short hand for unjustified social segregation. It's established that the Augs had an "episode" of sorts and it isn't their fault that it happened. Many of the Augs you meet are in fact deeply remourseful. I appreciate it as a way of having a topic like segregation in the game while leaving it up to you to decide if it's justified or not. The game deals almost entirely in grey except for the choices you make as a player.
After having just playing the game I have to say your comment is full of shit. The game does give a detailed and rational account of the social divide caused by augmentation technology, which is further aggravated by the Illuminati conspiracy controlling mass media in order to direct hatred towards the augmented population. All you did was repeat what Yahtzee but without any of the comedy in order to get likes from those who just watched the video and thus are more inclined to agree with you.

The core problem of this game was something Yahtzee never touched upon: with the open-ish city and the interesting exploration toolset available to the player, the exploration toolset progression should've been used to turn the game into a 3-D Metroidvania. It would've been brilliant.

You're definitely in the minority in thinking that Human Revolution was just "okay". To most people, including me, it was amazing.
When compared to the original Deus Ex, Human Revolution can seem a fair bit underwhelming. From the perspective of someone who grew up with the first Deus Ex (Yahtzee), you can see how he can find it just "okay".
Agree, compared to the original DE it's maybe not that amazing - but as a stand-alone game I do find it very good. Easily in my top 5 games from 2011.
He didn't take notice about what was good about MD over Deus Ex either.
The level design was actually amazing, and had so many more clever options while retaining pretty realistic building design that it beats out Deus Ex. The bank is probably the best example of this.
Even the game-play has matured a lot more, with the new experimental augs being a blast to play with and the game allowing proper "from cover" takedowns that actually throw the body behind you so you dont have to pull them yourself. I also didn't like the comment about how "augs are everywhere" in this game, and not in Deus Ex, when i'm fairly sure the Human Restoration act (that was the main focus in the game) will get passed eventually, in some form, and thus will be the reason for a huge lack of mechanical augs.
The point made about the dividing line is brilliant!
I'd say a reasonable dividing line between 'augmented' and 'not' would be whether you got an artificial thing (prosthetic or implant) to save your life or improve its quality (pace makers, prosthetic limbs that function like human limbs) or got a perfectly good organic part of you chopped out to make room for some sort of concealed piece of military hardware. A guy who got a hand crushed and needed a replacement is a bit different to one who got the full arm and part of the rib cage replaced with a piece of excavation equipment with three shotguns attached and an extra leg to help with the weight. Even if there isn't a switch that makes all the cyborgs want to kill everything, the latter guy probably already does. If you're skeet shooting you only need one shotgun and it doesn't have to have explosive slugs that fragment into into kill-crazed cybernetic spiders.
Let's also add the butchery of Czech language and Prague...sorry, I mean HUB city
Then you realise that Eidos-Montreal and Squeenix were blatantly padding this series out for a trilogy Tomb Raider Reboot-style, and had to chuck it in without finishing it. Fuck this games industry.

About the writing of HR, I loved the world building and some back stories/histories. But what actually happened in the game didn't engage me as much because I felt like I was mostly chasing some unknown generic badguys around the globe.
Or, more accurately, between Detroit and China for a while, occasionally going to a black site or to Montreal for a short break from growling at people.

Always love your reviews but I was just listening to Mogworld again and was wondering if you're writing another book anytime soon? Mogworld was an instant favorite for me and Jam was great.
I liked it. But then again, I spent my time messing around with side missions and just over all doing stuff. It did feel short, but I expected it to be because it felt like the quality of detail was higher.
It's a great way to kill the time and worth a go once around but that's about it.
Thing that kinda erked me was "oooo look you have 2 choices do this mission or that one," but whichever you choose you still end up at the same next mission.

Thing is, I'm pretty sure Deus Ex is only using the augmentation-racism parallel as part of a greater commentary on paranoia and the media as a whole, which is certainly relevant today, and such a narrative could be traced back to the original Deus Ex too.
Same issue I have with the omnic sideplot in Overwatch tbh. Yeah people fear and distrust omnics. Because barely 2 decades ago they tried their level best to wipe humanity off the face of the earth like bugs off a windshield. I don't call that racism, I call that fairly understandable.
This game has more loose ends than a public restroom inhabited by George Michael.
They bring up a million and one factions like the MachineGod, the Collective, the Mob, and even the fucking Illuminati (again) and none of it concludes. This is sequel-bait at it's finest. It absolutely could have fit into one game. It cuts off harder than Brock Lesnar preforming a circumcision.
If Adam Jensen has to go to the bathroom, that would be a blockbuster cutscene too.
The whole aug racism thing has one pretty big plot hole. What if someone needs augments? For example, say someone loses an arm in a horrible accident and gets an augment prosthetic arm. There's a guy in one part of the game you speak with briefly. The guy has a limp due to a leg that doesn't work. He chooses not to get an electronic one and just continue living with a prosthetic or something.
So yeah. They'd discriminate regardless of why you have them. Hell, Jensen got them due to being in a terrorist attack at the start of Human Revolution.
I don't view it as a plot hole. There are people like that already in the world who treat even pacemakers as unnatural and against god's will. The bigger plot hole I find is that they chose the Czech Republic as the setting for this movement. Poland I could understand as it's a heavily catholic country... But Czechs are some of the least religious people on earth.
You don't have to be religeous to have an unhealthy and irrational obsession with being "natural". I can safely say that, while it probably wouldn't be to the same degree shown in the games, a decent chunk of asshats would indeed treat augmented people like scum.
Jensen makes that argument in Human Revolution actually. I forgot who he was talking to at that point but the response is the same response you get from anyone you give perception to their bigoted view: "I know some people NEED it and i get that, but i still hate them >:I"

Yathzee, the "where is the divide?" question can be applied to any form of racism. With augs, it would actually be easier to do so

I think Yahtz has just started using actual dongers in his reviews instead of what I could only have guessed were dildos just in an attempt to see what he can get through the censor brigade. This is only a guess though.
Human Revolution was bigger than Mankind Divided in every way. It was longer, but more importantly the plot happened on a much larger scale while also giving you more investment because problems were your own. HR is about unraveling a global conspiracy, whereas MD is about stopping a small plan that conspiracy has hatched. It's also weird they took out the interesting gun mods, like lock-on and explosive rounds, and completely scrapped heavy weapons other than the grenade launcher.

Its weird too, because, iirc from the ending options especially, in Human Revolution the class divide actually still did factor into it. Not everyone could own augmentation, only those rich or willing to be the upper class's bitches/go into debt. Jensen's company flat out owning his ass (as in literally leasing him the ass he was currently using) was definitely touched upon and the famous 'I didn't ask for this' was reflecting on Jensen's feelings regarding everything from how augs are viewed in society as outcasts or subhuman, to how much he owes the company who, effectively, rendered him an indentured servant while unconscious. The game tried to juggle both. That they decided that might be too hard for the sequel is a bit of a bummer.
