How to Gap Spark Plugs / New v/s Old Gappers / Which is Best?

  • How to gap spark plugs. It's pretty simple, but here are a couple of the different gappers and which one to use. Surprisingly, the old school gappers work pretty decent. But I prefer the newer style, but there is a catch........you have to understand how it works and that the electrode does spring back some. I guess any of them will work, it just becomes a user preference and may also depend on how often you have to gap plugs and how many you are gapping in one setting. If gapping for normal cars, boats, equipment make sure to follow the specs listed for that piece of equipment, they know what works best!

    The first gapper you used, you're not supposed to open the gap by wobbling the plug on that ridge. The correct way to open the gap is by hooking the ground strap in the hole of the gapper and pry it open. Then you check the gap by sliding it on that ridge and where it stops indicates the gap. Using the hole eliminates contact on the electrode making it safe for gapping fine tip plugs like iridium plugs.

      And then when you go too far you bash the plug into your core support and start over

    Cracked porcelain note- if you rub your fingers on anything slightly dirty and then spin the porcelain in your dirty fingers... if there is a crack it'll collect in the crack and show itself, they can be hard to see otherwise. I wipe and look at every one before installing them.

    I don't use anything but Autolite race plugs! People say you can't read them as well as NGK! But if you are willing to give up a tenth of a second in the 1/8 mile, go ahead and use NGK! The reason I say this is I did a trial with NGK, same heat range, same gap, and indexed just like I do the Autolites! And on my second pass with Autolites my ET was 4.78 and on the next pass with NGKs my ET was 4.88! Exactly tenth of a second slower! That is why I don't use NGK! And I have always used the circular gap tool because it is more accurate than even the high dollar ones!

      Not sure about Autolites but there have been a lot of cheap Chinese NGK copies that have flooded the market.

    Great video, but on the first round gap guage, don't use the edge to widen the gap, put the side electrode in that hole and use it like a lever to bend the electrode tip out more by just moving the plug sideways some.

    I need to know how to set my points with a dwell meter 🤯

    • @danmyers9372
      @danmyers9372 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Old school! You can set points with either a feeler guage or a dwell meter. Dwell meter is the most accurate but it is more time consuming as obviously you can’t change the gap while running the engine either the meter attached. I would get an electronic conversion module like a Pertronics personally and do away with the lower accuracy and higher maintenance of points.

    What kind of damage could be caused with gapping a platinum plug with the red tool? Makes no sense.

    • @TurboJohnRacing
      @TurboJohnRacing  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can squeeze it for sure. Most people use the slider, that will pop off the platinum. Just have to be way more careful gapping them, that’s why most recommend not to
