      Dear Janet White,
Given south Texas and lantana, and you have probably experienced some degree of hardening off during the past few weeks, and not rapid temperatures from 80 to 40F in a short amount of time, your plants should not die immediately.
However, a lantana may not make it through winter if:
      1) It is in a pot and the water freezes in the pot causing the roots to die.
      2) In garden soil that stays very wet - chance of root rots and plant decline.
      3) On a northern or eastern facing part of the property during severe cold nights (example in the teens in south Texas).
Our horticultural recommendations are to mulch around the plants with 3 to 4 inches of mulch or provide winter protection such as burlap sacks or plant protection covers or blankets.
      Hope this help,
      James Gibson, Ph.D.

I planted young lantana plants in July here in S. Texas on the east side of the house. Protected from the north. Will they die when the temperature drops to 28° this coming week?

      Dear Mary Wilkerson,
Given south Texas and lantana, and you have probably experienced some degree of hardening off during the past few weeks, and not rapid temperatures from 80 to 40F in a short amount of time, your plants should not die immediately. Most commercial lantana these days have overwintering properties in hardiness zones, such as USDA Hardiness Zones 10 and 11 (subtropical). Example South Florida is Zone 10 - 30 to 40F would be its low temperature range during winter months. Certain lantana varieties may perform as a perennial in your area regardless of seasonal cold temperatures. Some may be hardy in Zones 9.
