A few years ago I bought several different lantana plants, all different colors, and they were gorgeous. Then I noticed the baby plants popping up here and there but they didn't produce flowers, just produced like a puffy ball. I didn't think much of it at first but these dang things are growing EVERYWHERE in my yard, in my potted plants, in the cracks in patio, in my potted orchids, in all of the garden beds, etc. I can't get rid of them and it is driving me crazy. I am CONSTANTLY pulling them out. If they flowered at least they would be pretty. I had pulled the original plants out about three years ago and never replanted but I just can't get rid of these plants, they just keep popping up. Grrrr!
Maybe I missed this but do the native species have the same root-suppressing effects on other plants that the invasive ones do? And how many feet does this effect work - 3" past the plant or 30'? Thanks. Time to dig out some lantana from the front.
Im in Puerto Rico but this video is so helpful because here there are some that are native and some that are invasive and this very useful to differentiate them.
I’ve been to Wilcox Nursery. Great place ! There’s another open Wednesdays and Saturday in or near Brooksville. Master Gardeners Nursery. Just a hair past the fairgrounds.
Thank you for this information. I lived in Az. Summers are very hot. I aften should I water them. Last summer all 9 plants of my Lantanas died!!!! 😢😢😢😢please help!!!!!!Last month I brought more Lantanas.
Just to clarify - The Lantana Depressa you discussed as a native plant is only considered a native plant in Florida, right? So wouldn't it be considered an invasive lantana anywhere else? I bring this up because TH-cam can put this video in front of people from anywhere in the world, but the advice may not apply everywhere.
Sigh, I just bought a lantana, white with yellow center and sandpaper leaves. It's from a small nursery. When I got home I googled to research it further and stumbled onto your video. Also, I didn't notice them in the store, but they have the pink/yellow combo on their website. I'm in Dallas, so maybe they are not as invasive here, but there's plenty other beautiful flowers so I don't care to find out, so back it will go. It's so disappointing that nurseries carry bad plants. Also they pass off as perennials plants that aren't perennial in your zone. You would think they would make themselves more knowledgeable, especially the smaller nurseries.
I was looking for info on native Texas lantana vs non-native. Confusing. Might want to put Florida native in title. Looks completely different than Texas native Lantana.
Super helpful video - thank you! I have a funny story about Lantana. It was the first flower that I remember noticing as a kid. I was about 5 years old and we had a ton of what I now think was L. camara 'Spanish Flag' (or something similar) growing along the road by my house, and I would tell everyone they were called "wildflowers" as if that was their actual scientific name or something. I don't know why or where I got the idea, but I was convinced that was what they were called. Everything other plant had "flowers" but these were "WILD flowers". I guess I was born to be a plant nerd lol!
Ha ha ! You may have heard an adult say they were going WiLD !. Are you familiar with Foxtail weed ?. I got off my school bus, picked a bouquet of them and rushed to gift them to Momma. She smiled and asked me what they were." They are Toodies ?". I knew they were not flowers, and they tickled my nose. The nickname stuck...to Me !.. I became Toody girl, Toodie Doo, Toodie Lou, etc. Ha ha !.
@@WildFloridian I have recommended your sight to family and friends - hope you get a lot more subscribers. We have had two remarkable moths come to visit this week - a pair of luna moths and the one died peacefully in our garage - we are going to frame it - it is so beautiful! Then last night and this morning a female Sweetbay moth - again large and beautiful - got some good pictures! The sweetbay (magnolia viginiana) are all around us in the woods - the host plant for the Sweetbay moth. I have found out the so many of our trees are host plants. Now, that I understand this - it makes me want to cry when developers cut down our native trees and put up non-native species.
Thank you so much for all your Lantana Videos. You are very thorough! I love plants that attract butterflies! Sadly I saw this video after buying a Hanging Hybrid Lantana at Home Depot :( Now I feel terrible. The Fact that it is a Hanging Hybrid Lantana, still make it invasive in Miami, Fl?
It may be sterile. It appears that many of the Home Depot Lantana are sterile. Check out this video to see if your lantana is sterile. th-cam.com/video/KWQ3gWCkFhw/w-d-xo.html
Ughh my husband bought and planted invasive lantanas in my garden and now they are crowding everything out. I mean I love the colors but honestly it’s not flowering like I thought and I’m not getting butterflies. I’m in belleview. I’m thinking we need to pull them out 😞
I found a wild lantana plant that I’m trying to determine if I should take cuttings of. It has the curled leaves that look native, but it also has red/orange/yellow flowers..think it’s the invasive one because of those colors?
Will native lantana attract mosquitoes like invasive ones? Guessing here its the many leaves offering hiding, maybe aggressive smart pruning will detract from mosquito-attractive clustered leaf spaces?
My mom would've been so disappointed in me because I bought six of these today. LOL I remember these when I was a kid and I always consider them a weed but I bought them anyway. I only bought them because they are pretty and I wanted something different but I'm going to pull them up tomorrow and buy some good old trusty Pentas.
I did not see this information in time! I just bought a Lantana Camara from Lowes. It is in a container and the butterflies love it. OOPS! 😮😂.....the native struggle is real
ANYONE in the Apopka or central Florida area that knows where I can get native lantana. I went to Apenberrys and Green Acres today but they don't have any..
I got mine from Wilcox in Largo and I believe Sweet Bay in Parrish has it... but that is a bit of a drive. Also check out the Facebook groups Florida Native Gardening and Native Florida Plants... lots of native gardeners who may be able to direct you to something closer.
@@WildFloridian I was actually able find Pineland Lantana in South Florida (I live in West Broward). So if anyone finds this comment go to Florida Nursery Mart in Cooper City off Griffin Road. They have a ton of native Pineland Lantana, and the other one too (I forgot the name).
Great info! I've been confused you helped greatly. TIP please do not talk so fast. Hard to understand especially when you are differentiating between native and invasive. Slow down and Keep up the great work!
Try this for any video that plays too fast for you. Tap the screen and select the settings button - looks like a cog wheel - then select playback speed. By choosing .75 it will slow down the video to 3/4 speed. You can also select closed captioning to help clarify what's being said. Obviously going higher in numbers (ex: 1.25, 1.5, 2.0) will speed up the playback speed in case you encounter painfully slow speakers 😅

5:41 ~ Wilcox in Largo!! My old stomping grounds! 😃 🥰
great info! i love watching out for our south florida natives to plant!

Thank you for educating us the difference between lantanas especially the new gold hybrid
Absolutely! I hope this helps people who are trying to go native. 😄
I just found out that the grocery store I work at has Pineland lantana in the parking lot!!! Never expected that
Thanks for sharing. I've been searching for the kind of plants growing in the backyard and didn't know it is an invasive.
Im in Puerto Rico but this video is so helpful because here there are some that are native and some that are invasive and this very useful to differentiate them.
I’m so happy this helped Jean!
I love your videos! So informative. Thank you for making these!
Glad you like them! Can't wait to see more of your butterfly garden!
Win-win on the native. Thanks for clarifying zone and region of FL super helpful for us snowbirds.

I bought a yellow one at a big box store that says Florida native?
That is great! My dream is that natives are more available! Happy dance for getting a native from a big boxed store!
Check for the scientific name!!
My mom would've been so disappointed in me because I bought six of these today. LOL

LOL 😂 Well a weed is in the eye of the beholder 😄 The butterflies and bees will love the pentas! Best wishes 😊
That was great and who knew Disney LOL
LOL! I know! I'm such a gardening nerd when I'm there!
I have all white lantana from Lowes
I did not see this information in time! I just bought a Lantana Camara from Lowes. It is in a container and the butterflies love it. OOPS! 😮😂.....the native struggle is real
Do the native ones have berries? And if they do, are they toxic to dogs?

Well hells bells ... I just planted 6 of these multi-color Lantanas under my mango tree a few days ago (Lowes clearance). Guess I'm pulling them up. 😞
I can't find any native Lantana Depressa
Try Wilcox Nursery in Largo
