Check out Kevin at Living Traditions Homestead. He came up with a plastic shoe box with PVC holes in the sides so the quail have to stick their heads inside it to eat. When they pull their heads back to pick up the food it stays in the box and there is no waste. He’s had quail for many years and him and Sara are great at sharing their knowledge. With the price feed climbing it’s hard to see any waste. Hope it helps! Thanks for sharing!

Use it up , wear it out, make it do or do without, I love your philosophy.

I’m so excited to see that you have quail! Please do a video on canning quail meat and quail meat meals in jars. Thank you so much!

I would love to see how to can quail. Just started raising quail and I live them. I made all of my cages from 1x1/2"and that seems to give me sanities to have outside feeding. When they were feeding inside the cage there was a lot of waste so I feel your pain. I added outside feeders that I cut from a square plastic bottle and zip tied to the front of the cage. Again I used 1 x 1/2 hardwire so that makes a difference. Thank you for all of your videos. I've watched them before I know you had quail. Even more excited to see them. Blessings.

Use 1 in. by 1 in. Mesh on top of opening instead of on top of feed

I don't have trays under mine and my chickens get any loose feed that falls. I'm thinking about putting a feeder on the outside where they have to put their head through to get feed, also like the plastic tote ice cream box too

Yes. Quail are wasteful feathered pigs. I use square ice cream containers with small holes cut into them, and place those on a plastic boot tray. Cuts waste a bit.

I am new to quail. I am experimenting, …did the feeder trough on the outside of cage. 👍 This week with a new group, will try the box on outside of cage where by the quail have to put their head in the tube to reach the food. I did find out that method did now work for babies. They climb in. Ha ha ha

We have 3 cages, have tried quite a few different avenues. My son in 1 cage took a piece of gutter put end caps on and fitted it with the mesh on top. They do poop on one end of the trough but they seem to waste less in that cage. Still needs to be tweaked. I told him I'd like to see some kind of hood over it to keep poop out completely and a gravity fed container to keep it full for several days.

No updates for a year on this. What did you end up doing?

Didn't see an update on the Quail Feed issue so I wanted to share a few ideas I saw. One was on Terry's Coturnix Corner's TH-cam channel. He has some pretty awesome ideas using what I believe was 1x2 welded wire to cover the J-Feeder opening. He left three long stripes of the wire, then drilled holes into the J-Feeder for them to slide into. This holds the wire up from the feed so the Quail couldn't shake their heads and spill out the feed. Hope this helps!
