Can I just say how much I appreciate your having Star Trek 25th Anniversary/Judgment Rites in the intro sequence. Little things like that are why I subscribe to your channel. Great to see you on the menu and making videos again!
The 4 additional rear buttons (L4, L5, R4 and R5) and the left trackpad + right trackpad combo are a game changer for me. So many new possibilities!! I feel like they reduce the gap between gamepad and keyboard+mouse. So I can't even consider any competition that lack these two features, even if the specs are better.
Great balanced review of the device. It is good to hear the pros and cons of a device without to much biased to another product. I know for most people that are involved in these videos and watch them it doesn't matter but one thing that never gets mentioned is the reason these products have a market is because the Steam Deck is still not sold world wide. This product while expensive is really the only option other than a Switch to buy where I live Australia. If Valve would sell the Steam Deck in my country I would jump on it in an instant but right now this device is the only option I really have. Especially for me who has large hands. I find all the other brands too small and uncomfortable to play. My hands go numb after a short play on most devices. I currently have the Ayaneo Next and it's controls are even worse for that hook thumb you mention in the video. From what I can see of the shape the OneXPlayer 2 is going to be a lot more comfortable than the Ayaneo Next. Well I hope it is.
Holy molly! I’ll be honest. With that OS (freaking windows) AND that screen (holy shit look at that thing) it’s looking really really REALLY good to me! Edit: wooooaahhhhh that price is a deal breaker. Like others said, handheld PCs been around for sometime but prices keep them at bay. Because at that price, your options grow massively. Hell you can even buy 2-3 handhelds instead of just one. Edit: I swear you’re like one of the few ppl that review a product like and at the end I know for a fact that this thing has 2 usb-c ports. Lots of ppl just go “couple of usbs of course”…no! Tell me exactly how many. 1 mouse 1 keyboard, can I charge the thing now? Well to me, makes a huge difference. Thanks MJR ❤ hearing ur voice is always good 👍 😊
You get a larger screen, marginally better graphics, and a bit more FPS when compared to the Steam Deck at over 3X the price (for the cheapest model of the Deck). Another thing to consider is that the Steam Deck is around the same performance still on most games thanks to the Proton layer and Experimental Proton Steam Deck uses.
Great review. Looks like I’m sticking with my Steam Deck for the foreseeable future. But that screen is beautiful however the Deck is more comfortable to hold and the Deck runs Steam OS which is a big plus for me.
I need to get a steam deck or switch oled in my life. Also can I just point out one of the better gifts this holiday season is some MJR vids again!? Glad to have you back in action, you were my first TH-cam channel I followed about 7 years ago!
There are ppl who bought PC / PS5/ Xbox/ Razer blade or Alienware laptop + all the handhelds just because they can. What's your point? These handhelds are not for broke ppl to begin with. It's a toy with average performance and a lifespan of approximately 1year, after that they are absolete. If your concerned about " money" you should really turn around asap.
@@TesGon What's my point? I made my point in clear terms. It's a lot of money, I would do something different, oh look, I did something different. I just told you a fact about my budget and how I adhered to it. A day in the life of me. It has nothing to do with anyone else, I just love to share.
Hey MJ, I really enjoyed this video and have also enjoyed your exercise videos. Just curious if we'll get an update on how that's going. A few months ago I bought a stationary exercise bike and really like it. It's fun to queue up one of your videos and pedal for awhile!
Something worth mentioning is UI, having a UI specifically designed for handheld play is a huge selling point of the steam deck, and in my mind worth the tradeoffs associated with Linux
@@beezle1976 "there's an absolute plethora of similar UI's for Windows too" Not really there's a handful windows shell replacements but I at least have never seen a complete DE replacement, not surprising since windows isn't built like that and if there are I doubt they're any good. Since it's already such a crazy expensive device it would be nice to allow people to opt out from giving money to microsoft.
It looks nice, but I think it's too much money. I'm looking forward to all the various brands (ASUS, DELL, MSI, HP etc) getting into making handhelds in this formfactor. I think it could end up being bigger than the gaming laptop market.
The Steam Deck value comes from it's continued software support from Valve vs generic OS layers. I think we will see a continued line of Steam Decks becoming a prominent handheld console in the next 3-5 years as more people switch to PC. This device appears to be running Windows 11, which introduces issues on it's own since Windows is such a resource draw vs Linux based OS. Overall, I think Nintendo is the handheld king with the Switch though. That form factor and weight with the performance it can deliver is pretty outstanding still in my opinion.
It seems like an interesting handheld alternative to the Steam Deck, but that price…yikes. I do like the idea of a turbo button to push the hardware a bit more. Another thorough and in-depth review, MJR! 👍
I think that Nintendo owns some kind of patent or something where another company can't make controllers that attach and detach like the JoyCons. You know how Nintendo is with protecting their stuff, and I've heard stories of other systems that were hit with a cease & desist from them. So I'm not surprised that these controllers can't work on their own when detached. Perhaps making them unusable while detached was a way for them to get around it? Great review, but at the price they're asking I personally wouldn't bother with this device. You could get a steam Deck and an insane amount of games for $900-$1,200. Plus that flimsy kickstand should be much beefier imo at that asking price lol
A nice selling point is that it uses Windows. I have games all over the place, from Steam, Epic Games, GOG, Game Pass, etc., so it's nice to know they will likely be compatible with this.
This is similar to comparing a Razer Blade laptop to an Acer laptop. High end stuff will always cost more, but it's probably not the best bang for your buck. To each their own, but it' a super nice rig if you can afford it.
Thank you MJR. So many people licking bootheels of SD competitors. Ignoring obvious flaws (design and choice wise) because they only see one aspect. Weight is major concern. So is offset sticks and smaller controller. A smaller main battery and adding small batteries and BT chip would've made the controller(s) completely wireless. Having to carry controller adapter with already heavy device is no go. And for $1200? Nope. Hopefully you read this. Sub'd.
Don't buy. I regret getting a refurbished 4800 model. I played it for 6 hours before that battery issue occurred took them 7 days to respond plus I had to ask on discord for someone to respond! They wanted me to send back, but at this point (not being able to get a refund because of the 7 day policy) I asked for a battery to be delivered, but haven't received a response. Ik the bigger screen and resolution is a plus to ALOT of us and having windows, but I'd rather buy a steam deck than have wasted my money like this. Also, reading that some people have waited 2 months for repairs scares the hell outta me and made me glad I didn't ship back with the shady stuff they wanted me to do to save them money for a product that didn't last a day after being delivered. Glad I bought the cheapest model, so I can take this L respectfully and not be out 1200-1500$
I've got my preorder in. The screen quality will be much better than my steam deck and having full amd driver support with windows is a huge win over my steam deck. It's like comparing a 720p tv with a 1080p. One will get you by and the other gets you by nicer. Just a matter of if you want to pay the extra money for the nice features.
About the placement of the right joystick, if it was higher like on the steam deck, but the buttons are lower, then it would be much more uncomfortable to bend your finger down on multiple directions for the XYBA buttons. The steam deck is much wider to have both the joystick and the buttons on a high position, but if either the joystick or the buttons should be lower, then it's better if the joystick is lower.
6:26 Nice Judas Priest reference, MetalJesus. People trashed on "Turbo Lover" but I don't get why because it's great to drive to and it's one of my favorite Priest songs.
Detachable controllers are the future for handheld PCs, now you have a hybrid handheld console, tablet, laptop and desktop PC. I think gpd win 4 is still the best looking device coming soon.
the steam deck has near perfect ergonomics and works very well- I just don't think it's possible for this system to have that fluidity (though even the steam deck has its problems minor as they may be)
I'm not into portables much less PC portables that requires an amount of technical knowhow to download games or cloud game. But wow does this system sounds and looks good. But of course that comes at a price. $1,200? If I was into portables money is not a problem but the Steam Deck seems fine to me. So why pay more? And is this system going to be supported in the long run? And the games? I'd wait like a year to see what happens. Like C3PO said:"It's so good to see you fully functional again, wonderful!" Nice that you're well. I hope you have a happy and prosperous New Year 2023 MJR!🎉

There a whole bunch of Chinese companies pushing out 6800u devices in the future. They are all a bit simulair in price but thats because Valve is large company and they can take a hit selling a cheaper handheld. They make it up on selling software. Those other Chinese handheld manufacturers don't sell software, just the hardware so I understand the price. You should look into the GPD Win 4 perhaps. Its the smallest 6800u device and a tribute to the PSP and Vita. It looks just like one. I love the way it looks. But also, it starts at 800 bucks so its not for everyone.
They are using laptop components in this device (laptop CPU+GPU). That booster button has the same purpose as in gaming laptop to switch between the integrated video chip and the more powerful GPU.
$1200?!? I bought a 14 core/ 20 thread laptop with a 140W RTX 3070ti for $1350.... I mean I get its portable but at that price, you can buy a base Steam Deck and an entry gaming laptop to go with it on the side even...
There are a bunch of other 6800U based Windows gaming portables, and they are all significantly more expensive than the Steam Deck. While the Steam Deck was the better deal on paper, all those pricey Windows portables sold out because they took advantage of Valve not being able to supply Steam Decks as much as they can. There's still a lot of upside to these devices because you don't have to worry about Proton compatibility. But then, I'm not really here to convince you they're great. I don't have to. They're already very successful and we will probably continue to see more of them this 2023, maybe even 2024. I think this year will see smaller and hopefully more power efficient 6800U portables than this OneXPlayer 2. The GPD Win 4 has already grabbed attention for squeezing the same hardware to a PlayStation Vita form factor, very impressive engineering by GPD.
I like the design and the performance. However 2hours of playtime is unacceptable for me. And it is so bulky. I can just buy a 15" gamer laptop for this price, and its not much bigger. I know that the switch and the steam deck are successful. But it's a bit too much for me.
I think the laptop comparison is 100% true, especially at the starting $1200 price... however as somebody who travels a lot, there is something to be said to using a handheld on a cramped plane as opposed to a laptop...but still not sure it's worth the $$
At first i used to think a lot like a lot of comenters here about the price of these new handheld gaming PCs. But they are legit full fledged PCs with high end graphics and processors smooshed into a portable so the price does make sense. Also like to mention that I'm not a huge gamer but since a lot of these machenes run windows they double pretty well as a media device.
its whole "hardcore gamer" marketing and design is extremely off-putting, even if it is more powerful than the Steam Deck. Valve seems to have the more mature software and hardware.
I was curious about that device, I heard it’s good handheld, I was thinking if it could play app games from google play ? Very nice review, I just change my opinions on it 😊
The screen looks fantastic but that weight really weighs it down. I think the design looks great but if everything else was equal in terms of performance and support I'd prefer this over a Steam Deck for the larger battery. The battery is the main killer for the Steam Deck as far as my wallet goes. I love seeing all the new handhelds that have sprung up but Nintendo and Steam Deck are what I consider the main players in the handheld market because they are from companies who have been around, have a reputation, and have a certain level of commitment/trust that they will support the device post launch. I also like that they have their own widespread software with the Switch being very simple (too simple in my opinion) and Steam on the Steam Deck. Having the communities to support and people being able to help each other in addition to the companies makes me have more trust in them. All these high power high performance devices are a novelty or a luxury to me which are out of my price range as far as investing into a company I am not as familiar with and am not sure will be around to support it. I'm sure there's plenty of forums that spring up but there's something to be said for Switch and Steam Deck in terms of streamlining things and having an interface that is more user friendly than the majority of these handhelds. Even compared to the Switch the Steam Deck takes a bit more tech knowledge than it yet the information is readily available for people who want to get answers and solutions. I'd rather wait for Steam Deck V2 and hope it has a better battery and better screen where they are targeting a similar spec so developers can have time to better understand the hardware and develop for it. There's less certainty in how any other handhelds in this booming yet niche market will perform. I think developers in general will be more likely to support the major consoles and fix problems and performance on well established handhelds than all these dozens of other impressive yet smaller user base handhelds.
Is the screen OLED? If Steam Deck got an OLED screen and a battery boost I'd be sold. Battery life and screen quality are the main things I am looking for on top of raw power.
CPU is certainly more powerful but with the decks hardware adjustable screen refresh you can get 40fps without drop outs unlike other solutions, not to forget this uses that gpu for pushing 4x the pixels, on an 8in screen i don't think it's worth it, and if docked then aren't you just gonna get a laptop? at 30w your looking at LESS than 2 hours battery. At the price just there's no comparison, then again I don't think anything else could be. Deck was custom made by a big firm at priced at a loss almost anything else is always gonna be much more.
The 680m is a lot more powerful than what's in the steamdeck. Theyre both rdna2 based, but the 680m has significantly more cores, tmus and rops, and a higher clock speeds. Its somewhere in the ballpark of 2-3 times as powerful as the steamdecks gpu.
no trackpads - no buy. Its fun when playing Fifa or Rayman. Try play Anno, Steelers, any RTS, any isometric RPG, - basicly half of PC heritage is usless on this device. You have 3 options: 1. Buy SteamDeck 2. Wait for Steam Deck 2 3. Wait for next Ayaneo which will have dual trackpad support (they are working currently on that device)
For the price there’s absolutely no way I wouldn’t get a Steam Deck or just keep playing my Switch or Vita. Cool little device though
For most people (myself included) a Steam is enough (and way, way cheaper) 👍
It is definitely not cheap but some people ^ can easily afford it
I mean this does 1000% more than even a hacked Switch or Vita so idk why you'd even mention them....
I'm kind of tempted by the bigger screen size. I have the Deck and I've had problem seeing more distant objects in some games.

Can I just say how much I appreciate your having Star Trek 25th Anniversary/Judgment Rites in the intro sequence. Little things like that are why I subscribe to your channel. Great to see you on the menu and making videos again!
Glad you enjoy it!
Super surprised at the hook thumb issue. I agree it may be an opportunity for controller variations. Happy New Year MJ!
Great review, as always. Honest and in depth. I personally will be waiting a while before jumping in on the handheld pc, just too expensive now.
Turbo buttons are back! 🙂(Reminds me of old 286 PC computer). It is good that you mentioned placement of right thumbstick.
That "Turbo" button, right?! You said it!! My old 8088 PC that was handed down by my grandpa had one too 😂
Great balanced review of the device.
I usually just bring my desktop tower on the train, to cofee shops, etc but this looks like it might be a better idea
How bout best and worst games of 2022 video? Love the channel!
Another fun and interesting video. Thanks, MJR and Season's Greetings to u!
Happy holidays!
Happy New Years MetalJesusRocks!
Is that the same Will you serenaded on his birthday in your very first video, all those years ago? Awesome!
Thanks MJR ❤ hearing ur voice is always good 👍 😊
If you want it, jump on it now cuz the price goes up Sunday I believe. (not sponsored BTW)
@@MetalJesusRocks thanks for the heads up….I’ll have some thinking to do then 😅
I'm quite happy with my steam deck. Thanks for the review MJR.
Happy new year Metal Jesus rocks
I love mine from last year, I got the AMD 5700U version. It’s an awesome Game Pass, Steam, and emulation machine.
LFG. My day is always better when MJR uploads!!! 🎸
The thumbnail made me think damn metal Jesus looking fine
just shows how well the form factor is designed for the steam deck. They thought about battery size, weight, screen size, and button position
I remember the turbo button. Never turned it off unless we were trying to play Scortched Earth.
Great video Jason!
Love your channel man! Thanks Metal Jesus!
Rock on!
Great video Jesus! Happy Holidays!
Nice as usual. Thank you.
It's really neat. I like how you go in depth on stuff like this. Need more mjr in 2023.
Same! :)
I need to get a steam deck or switch oled in my life. Also can I just point out one of the better gifts this holiday season is some MJR vids again!? Glad to have you back in action, you were my first TH-cam channel I followed about 7 years ago!
Happy holidays!
I would buy a Steam Deck base model and a mid-range laptop for the cost. (Which is precisely what I’ve done).
@VIRACY TV it IS a lot of money, correct. It's like saying: hey, look, " Tesla" is an overpriced car. What else is new :)
Depends what you consider a mid-range laptop cuz I consider that to start at &1500-
Hey MJ, I really enjoyed this video and have also enjoyed your exercise videos.
You can use SteamOS3 (the OS used by Steamdeck) on this (and other pcs), and there's an absolute plethora of similar UI's for Windows too.
Another banger review. 🔥
This thing looks dank
Happy new year MJR looking forward to a 2023 Metal Jesus gaming videos
I’m glad you’re enjoying it happy new year!
110 days no alcohol team Jesus winning 🥇🏆🚀🙌
It looks nice, but I think it's too much money. I'm looking forward to all the various brands (ASUS, DELL, MSI, HP etc) getting into making handhelds in this formfactor. I think it could end up being bigger than the gaming laptop market.
You are doing product testing for them! Very interesting video. That right analog stick is definitely a deal breaker for me.
Great vid. Thanks Jason.
Thanks for watching!
@@MetalJesusRocks
I would also like to thank you.
Another great hardware review! Congrats man!
If ARM SOC's became a standard for windows, maybe these kind of consoles will be a lot less bulky and really portable
Sub'd.
Thank you for the thorough, honest review!
I just ordered this unit. Looking forward to using it
My main problem with this is the price you could get the Asus z13 with a rtx 3050 for not much more and it's basically a pc
6:26 Nice Judas Priest reference, MetalJesus.
People trashed on "Turbo Lover" but I don't get why because it's great to drive to and it's one of my favorite Priest songs.
Yep! I like the album Turbo (and song)...but I'm an 80s kid, so I love that hair metal 🤘
Detachable controllers are the future for handheld PCs, now you have a hybrid handheld console, tablet, laptop and desktop PC.
I think gpd win 4 is still the best looking device coming soon.
Check out the PeakDo 7-inch mm-Wave Streaming Handheld.
Loving the new room
the steam deck has near perfect ergonomics and works very well- I just don't think it's possible for this system to have that fluidity (though even the steam deck has its problems minor as they may be)
I think the Steam deck is pretty dam good, the controller mapping integration is the best out there, almost worth the price just for that.
Should make a series on portable handheld devices
Like very much your channel
Great idea having detachable controllers with the right stick higher up. I wish they would do this.
"Well, is it single player or two players?"
"No, it's CALLED the OneXPlayer 2."
"Oh, an Xbox handheld?"
"No, it's PC based."
"A laptop?"
And so on…
I'm not into portables much less PC portables that requires an amount of technical knowhow to download games or cloud game.
Nice review ! seems great ! what is the last car games on your video with buggy jumping please !
You should have the nephew on it more often! Cool
2:28 .....left side Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygen (vinyl ? )
Brilliant musician , check Kraftwerk as well.
This handheld is looks far much better than steam deck
I just grabbed a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus from GoRetroid, it emulates up to GC, Wii and light Switch. Running Android, they brought some new colors that are awesome.
Love how the switch all started the new handheld craze again
it really did 👍
Love the cameo appearance of the logi k380. Best $30 keyboard out there.
I think the laptop comparison is 100% true, especially at the starting $1200 price... however as somebody who travels a lot, there is something to be said to using a handheld on a cramped plane as opposed to a laptop...but still not sure it's worth the $$
Pretty cool the center controller power unit makes sense
This thing, Logi Cloud, and the Aya Neo seem to exist purely to demonstrate the high value proposition of the SteamDeck.
Man I was expecting $500-600, something where maybe you wince but it’s comparable to the competition. $900-1200 is “laughing as you walk out” money.
its whole "hardcore gamer" marketing and design is extremely off-putting, even if it is more powerful than the Steam Deck. Valve seems to have the more mature software and hardware.
Looks good but I’m not a handheld guy.
I was curious about that device, I heard it’s good handheld, I was thinking if it could play app games from google play ? Very nice review, I just change my opinions on it 😊

Better run for cover
“Normal sized humans with normal sized hands.” Lol
That kickstand is suffering from the launch Switch design. It's probably better but I like the whole tablet style wide kickstand on the OLED.
With zero grams of dietary fiber, I'm not sure if it stacks up to the Steamdeck... but good review MJR!
@@beezle1976 oh my bad I mistook it for the igpu of the 6600u. Thanks for the correction. I'll edit the comment I think most of the principle stands.
The deck was also made in China. Only designed in the USA.
no trackpads - no buy. Its fun when playing Fifa or Rayman. Try play Anno, Steelers, any RTS, any isometric RPG, - basicly half of PC heritage is usless on this device. You have 3 options:
1. Buy SteamDeck
2. Wait for Steam Deck 2
3. Wait for next Ayaneo which will have dual trackpad support (they are working currently on that device)
