Once we had a nonverbal kiddo come to school super excited. We kept trying to figure out what was going on. She simply meowed over and over again. After a while she pointed at her back pack meowing. Sure enough she brought her cat to school!!! Thank god it didn’t die from lack of oxygen in her backpack. The school social worker put the cat in her office while we waited for her mom to come pick up the cat. The cat ended up getting stuck in the heater. We almost had to call someone for help, but the nonverbal child was able to coax the cat out. Lol

Back around 2000 I had a parent-teacher-administrator conference about a student who was behaviorally challenged. The mom and the step dad came in for the meeting. The step dad was pushing the mom in a wheelchair and she was clutching a puffy pillow. She said she'd recently had female surgery and was still weak and recoverying. Her child was spoiled, entitled, and a pain in the ass. The mom was working towards an academy award playing the weak surgery patient. She had a never ending list of what she'd been doing to help her student improve... AFter school I had stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few things for dinner and who did I see? Weak and recovering surgery mom. Only now she wasn't in a wheel chair. She was walking along carrying a handbasket talking and laughing on her cell phone while she was shopping. She didn't see me but I sure saw her. Did I treat her student any differently because of how supposedly the mom was trying to recover from surgery? Oh hell no. I wrote very intentional write ups and reports that reflected how said student was not progressing on their IEP behavioral goals. Don't try to play your kid's teachers, we shop and live in your town too and we see your shit.

Halloween about 12 years ago. Class comes in for music and some are wearing costumes. One boy is dressed like a '50's greaser and another is wearing an all white, 3 piece suit, slicked back hair wig, big sunglasses and some bling. Greaser boy asks wig boy, "Who are you supposed to be? Elvis?" Wig boy answers, "No! I'm a PIMP!!"
Costumes are no longer allowed on Halloween in my school!

I raised four kids and by about 7:30 every night, I’d just hit the wall from exhaustion. I didn’t know that happened to teachers too right before Spring break.

This happened when I was in high school back in 1976. Smoking was prohibited on campus except for the area designated by red paint on the cement. Our school building was built in the 1940’s. There was was a corner where four classrooms were in area closed off with a door leading to the main hallway. These four classrooms were on the backside of a huge air filter that pulled air into the building. One day several students decided to skip a class and stand under the air vent and smoke weed. The air filter sucked the smoke into the building dumping it out in those four classrooms. Needless to say, there were some mellow teachers and students at the end of the hour.

Recently while I was in the middle of teaching math, a toy from a child’s desk ended up on the floor. All the kids said it belonged to this one child. This particular child was not there that day, so I naturally said something to the child who sits in the seat next to this child. He told me it was the other child’s toy. And, I responded, but that child is not here today, so how did it end up on the floor. He tried telling me he didn’t know. So, this toy just flew out of the desk by itself, and he said yes. He swore up and down that he did not touch the toy, that it had flown out of the desk. I asked him if he really expected me to believe that, and he told me yes. This same kid went home claiming this other child was bullying him. How is your child being bullied when that other child is not even here?

Here's one: My teaching partner, admin, the SPED teacher, and I were meeting with a mom about why her 5th-grade son was struggling in school and specifically why he was falling asleep in class. She shared that her son woke up several times each night to check all the doors and windows...wait for it...to be sure she was not bringing men into the house! 😲😖 Spoiler alert: She was.

Testing coordinator in a Florida county. There is a famous story about a testing coordinator being called to a room with a sick kid. When she arrived at the room, the student in question stated that he was done with testing and there was 45 minutes to go for testing time. He said he was going to vomit so the TC took the test from the student and the student projectile vomited all over her. The TC was so excited that she had saved the test and the vomit only got on her. This is not a joke.

I quietly freaked the hell out and as soon as I could I went to the front to tell them what was said. To which they responded that this is not the first time he had done that. I was like. And y'all ain't got him in counseling or some shit?

I work at a private elementary school that also has a summer camp. I brought in a stamp pad and some rubber stamps to add to the craft supplies for my bunk. One day a couple of the 2nd graders had taken off their shirts and COVERED each other with dark purple hand prints( and of course the palms of their hands were solid purple as well. The were giggling as they rubbed and slapped ink all over themselves , doing the finishing touches proudly right in front of me. It was ten minutes before they had to go down to line up for the busses to go home.
I said- "You realize that's ( unlike the water washable markers provided by the school) PERMANENT INK, don't you?" ( I had not expected behavior like this from 2nd graders or I'd have thought twice before bringing the stamp pad).
One of them BURST INTO TEARS, because he thought that meant he'd have to go his entire life purple!
I said to relax, permanent ink wears off skin gradually and they calmed down some. But they were trying to wash it off with soap and water, no luck, facing possibly trouble when they got home and quite a few days of purpleness when I spotted a spray bottle of 70 % alcohol hand sanitizer on a counter. Told them they were lucky, and that the alcohol would clean off the ink. Sprayed them, wiped them with paper towels, got about 90% of it off and they looked so relieved and even thanked me. Took nearly the whole bottle and most of a pack of paper towels!

I teach third grade and this year I had a pretty “special” group of ornery boys. One day, one of the boys, who was my most challenging student by far, took a paper clip with him to lunch. Now, I’m not in the lunchroom with them. There is an aide who does lunch duty. While at lunch, this boy, with support and encouragement of the other boys and unbeknownst to the teacher on duty, decided he would see what happened if he stuck the paper clip in the electrical outlet. The first time not much happened so he tried again. The second attempt resulted in the lights flickering, flames from and scorching of the outlet, and burning of this child’s fingers. The student had to sit out for recess and P.E., but that was his only punishment.

You ask why parents believe what kids say about teachers, but then turn around everything kids say about parents. These stories are why it is so funny when a parent video records their child saying a bad word because the child does not understand the difference between the 2 similar sounding words. The parents that I find so hilarious withhold their immediate response and ask context questions to figure out what the child is actually trying to say. IE the child means to say that store is SHUT.... This is why its boggles my mind that a lot of the parents in these stories do not use common sense and ask context questions and take what the child is saying as gospel. The child is either lying half the time or doesn't know what they are talking about the other half of the time up to a certain age.

One of my 5 yr olds came in sighing big sighs and crossed his arms and put his head on the desk. When I asked him what's wrong, he said: " I just don't know what my dad's gonna do when he gets out of jail and finds my mom's boyfriend in the bedroom" (What do you say to that?) Oh my gawd! I have a story for you! So my dad was a high school counselor from 1984 until like 2010. So they used to show my BIRTH VIDEO in the health class, or so I thought it was just health class.
So I live in a small town of Athens ga, seems bigger cause of UGA but it is quite small. So I was checking out at a store and the guy saw the Wyrick part of my last name and was like oh my counselors name was Dr wyrick in high school and I was like yeah that’s my dad. So dude stops, and looks at me and asks what year I was born… I just go, yes, that was my birth. It’s at this moment I find out that they also used to show it in the psychology class and my dad, PhD in psychology, would go talk about my moms mental health during pregnancy and after birth. So yeah lots of students saw my birth video.
