To those who are telling teachers that we knew what we were getting into, that we knew the pay was lousy, etc, then we should just quit. Guess what, we are quitting. We are done. Good luck parents.

Parents were literally losing their minds during the 4 months of strictly virtually school during the start of the pandemic too 😂 That’s the kicker here. Parents think that this job is so easy and that we have zero right to be stressed but they were sure losing their shit when there was no choice but to stay at home all day with their kid and make sure they did their homework.

@@biancaportillo6552 but half the time, they didn’t! When I went to switch my kid’s school, there was a dad who was being talked to about why their child had 46 absents from virtual learning. 46! He looked so embarrassed. I work in daycare but I can relate! The parents don’t care at all. My kid knows better than to do any foolishness at school! “Your teacher doesn’t get paid enough for all of that and you’re in school to learn” yes ma’am!

It's not a mystery. "You don't know their home life -- be empathetic," the teacher trainers say. Yet I knew a girl who was raised like a dog in a cage until she was 12 -- rape, drugs, you name it, it was a part of her life. She had all kids of trauma and challenges, understandably. Still, she behaved decently because she was taught that the type of behavior in these stories is unacceptable. And she struggled, and the teachers were gracious -- but she made it without biting a chunk out of anyone's arm.

This lack of accountability started a long time ago. Who do you think these punks are that are stabbing people and robbing people at gunpoint? I read and saw in a drugstore in New York City about how people come, take whatever they want, then walk out the door. Store employees have been told not to do anything for fear of violence. We have people waiting in front of luxury stores for someone to come out with shopping bags. That person is attacked, their goods stolen, and often their car, as well. If the situation in the parking lot won't allow the thugs to get away with the crime, they follow the person home and do it there, often in broad daylight. Think about coordinated mob robberies at luxury stores. Do you think these people were star students? Some want to blame this type of crime on poor education by schools. I call b.s. on that. It's poor parenting.

The adults we see now that get aggressive are also the children that were allowed to do whatever they wanted. They don't know what to do with the word NO! No you cannot do whatever you want. No you cannot trash the room and think it is fine. I am sorry that you don't wish to learn today but you are not allowed to take that opportunity away from others. The scary thing is they are getting younger.

We teach what parents don't or won't teach at home, like colors, shapes, name recognition, letters, etc. Good day cares prepare kids for kindergarten. Many kindergarten teachers have told me they know which kids were at day care because they were ready to read. Though regular teachers deal with more kids and do more work, I just have to stand up for day care. Day care is not babysitting. They have lesson plans and paperwork just like regular teachers. I'm a substitiute in California. Nowadays, at least here in CA, teachers are required by law to contact social services if they have a reason to believe a child is in danger or is being abused or neglected. You are not required to investigate the situation on your own or contact the parents. You can contact social services directly, without permission from any administrator, without repercussions. You and your job are protected under the law, theoretically at least. I wouldn't doubt administrators can still pull shenanigans if they don't like you or you embarassed them because you revealed their incompetency.

I asked the parent what I was supposed to do with the other 140 kids who might need me or have a question. I also told her I needed time before school started to get ready for the day and I was officially "off the clock" until ten minutes prio to the bell. I want to know why an admin has the right to tell a teacher they can’t go to the ER. Oh, I’m sure it has to do with evidence of liability, worker’s compensation issues, etc., but if a kid takes a chunk out of my arm you’re going to have to physically restrain me from getting in the ambulance and you’re dang well going to hear from my attorney if I’m fired for doing so. Maybe OSHA needs to utilize these stories to come up with some standards protecting teachers.
I was an education major as an undergraduate for 2 years, 1988-1990. I changed majors because I was already hearing parents say, “You can’t make my kid do that.” Now I get to watch my teacher husband struggle with parents and admin. So much so that he just took another teaching job beginning in the fall.

When I begin my teaching career in 2004, we had a yearly evaluation, that was about it! Somewhere around 2010, I believe they started doing 15 minute informal evaluations, 30 minute formal evaluations, and 5 to 7 minute walk-throughs, this is where we are in education now. And if your administrator does not like you personally, you can forget getting a good evaluation, they will find any and every excuse to give you low marks, it is quite sad. They claim that the valuations are objective but how can they be objective when they’re being done by someone that you have to work with on a daily basis. The power dynamics that the assistant principals and principals have in the education system is the reason why teachers are getting routinely abused because there’s no oversight of principals; they can run the school unchecked, and they have their minions like their assistant principals and other teachers to reinforce the abusive behavior. I think this channel is going to blow up, and all the people who are thinking about getting into education will not get into it

I've seen kids hit, spit and cuss their parents out...which sent my blood pressure into overdrive! I've heard parents say please behave because if I spank you these people will call the police on me. WHO? NOT ME! I would politely let them know, if they were referring to me, that we had a stockroom and they were most welcome to use it. Most of my retail work was in a small town where most customers knew me well and that I was NOT the one to deal with their kid's foolishness. And one of the main isles I worked was the toy isle. Nothing more needs to be said. I STILL have PTSD especially when I think about what I had to go through during Christmas season. NO, the customer is NOT always right and the Administration in these schools aren't either. God times have changed. When I was in school, (80s, yes I'm dating myself), we ACTUALLY got paddled at school for misbehaving and suspended for the simplest of reasons. And I turned out GREAT! We have always made sure the punishment fit the crime. I just have never been able to figure out how spanking a child could fit into any category. I suppose maybe if they laid their hands on someone else. I also was in the Army so I guess I just have a different view. I was spanked as a child (not beaten) and all it taught me was that when I was upset angry hurt or frustrated the proper response was to hit someone or something. I 1000% agree though that these kids need some form of actual discipline and consequences for their action with follow through every single time!

The same way we tell kids they aren't allowed to drink alcohol while adults can. Part of the problem is that we keep letting children think they are on an equal footing with adults when they are not. A part of respecting authority is recognizing the authority they have over you, and recognizing you don't have the right to exercise that same level of authority.
If someone were to tell you they refused to pull over after speeding by a police car and argued they shouldn't get a ticket because the cop sped up to catch them too, most sane adults would call them crazy, because we rightfully recognize that law enforcement has a certain level of authority over regular citizens - they are allowed to speed in situations we are not allowed to.
The reason we are in this mess in education is because too many adults don't want to be authority figures to their students, but would rather be friends with them. With all of the romanticized notions that we have adopted in education over the last 30 years, we should be asking ourselves why student performance has actually worsened since removing corporal punishment from schools instead of improved.

These stories make my blood boil. I’m so angry hearing that these teachers didn’t get the support they should have gotten from their admin and I keep thinking about what you went through yourself, which led to you leaving the teaching profession altogether. You weren’t treated right and nor were any of these teachers. Kids are never going to learn accountability if they aren’t held accountable for their actions and they’ll grow up thinking anything they do wrong is not their fault. The worst part is theses school districts are losing good teachers who really care about their students. I can tell you were one of them. I’m sorry your school district didn’t value you or any of these other teachers like they should have. Just know that I see you and every other teacher, I see how hard you work to try to teach kids the skills they need to know so they can succeed in life. You do important work and you are appreciated and valued more than you will ever know.
Have you ever thought about writing a book about what you went through as.a teacher? I bet any book you write would be a best seller. You could title it something like “Teaching Kids Today: The Ugly Truth About What Really Goes On In the Classroom”. If you write a book, I’ll be the first in line to buy it. I’ll even ask for my local library to buy a copy. I’ve done it for another friend to help her promote her book and I’ll do it for you too.

It’s negative because that’s where the profession has gone. I’m not a teacher or a parent and I totally believe these stories. I was a student and saw this. Heck I work in food service right now so I still see it in my customers.

It’s scenarios like you are reading that sent me into early retirement. I got my degree back in the 70s when life was more pastel. I left long before these shocking stories!! I’m so sorry for those still in the ranks. And the systems wonder why they can’t get teachers? All teachers have my daily prayers!!🙏🏻

Thank you so much for sharing these stories. My spouse is a high school teacher and non-teachers just can’t comprehend what they have to deal with on the daily and it’s sickening… I work in corporate and these situations would NEVER happen there. So why is it ok in our public school system? Ugh. Anyways, thank you for speaking out for those that cannot and using your platform to spread awareness on this issue. The system is broken and needs to change.

They know they just don't care. In the pandemic parents had to deal with their kids, I homeschool my kids so I don't deal with these issues, but many parents said plenty. They know they hate their kids and they are out of control and they had them, how much more are teachers dealing with?? It's obvious these are crazy times.

All the parents have forgotten how much they "loved" having their little blessings at home a year. They need to go back home for a year to remind them how much they appreciate teachers. Been teaching online for 4 years. It has it's issues but WAY better than being at school.

These stories are heartbreaking and I know that these are so true. I drive a school bus and have seen teachers walk away from a job that they at one time loved. I have also seen bus drivers walk away from students' behavers also. I feel that it is going to take not having the teachers and bus drivers for the change to happen and it is sad. Thank you for being a voice for the ones that can't talk for themselves.

Please keep sharing! 20 years ago we started seeing kids breaking down and "snapping" in schools, and now we are seeing the teachers breaking. This abuse and toxic environment should not be forced on anyone.
Kids must be taught respect and be in environments of respect. People think "they are just kids". I'm 5'2" and I never let my kids hit me, not even as a toddler, because I knew one day it was going to be respect not size that mattered. At 13 my son was taller and stronger than me, you gotta get your kids in line. Shame on the adults (bad admin/parents/teachers) that create and allow these angry children, aggressive teens, and dangerous adults.

I graduated from high school in 2014 and I can safely say these are definitely true.

And it's insane to think it's gotten worse for teachers and students ever since I graduated

I am a retired teacher in California. I am horrified by these stories. We have a very strong union here, and they support and protect us. A student accidently tripped me, and my principal drove me to urgent care. I had a broken foot, and the district paid for everything, and my salary was fully paid for the weeks I was off. I feel so bad for all of the teachers who do not have this kind of support from the district. 😢

As I listen to these stories my heart is filled with rage! How are these “leaders” not protecting their people? It is a shame that pregnant individuals cannot work in a place where they and their unborn child are safe. There needs to be parent workshops and constant communication to start fixing this. These children’s crappy behavior is co-signed by parents and admin and the teachers are suffering. I am an instructional assistant overseas and hearing these stories makes me afraid to move back to the US. Things have got to change or the schools will be empty…no more teachers=no future for our children. Parents and admin need to get some uprightness about themselves or they will be the ones teaching. I’d like to see how long they’d last in the same circumstances.

I'm a parent who has volunteered in my kid's co-op school for the last 15yrs. I've met some of these crazy parents and kids. These stories are totally believable. I get upset too sometimes if the teacher makes a choice that I feel affected my kid negatively, but we work it out like adults. I always go out of my way to tell them how grateful I am for the amount of love and care they show my children. 💗 teachers.

Ooooooh, I am GLAD you are here to tell the stories of these who have to go through so much in these classrooms. I quit teaching because too many schools systems are too lax on disciplinary procedures, parents are too lax in raising their children, and administrators don't seem to care too much more than holding a title and the size of their salaries. Many teachers are left holding the bag in addressing the total needs of children to the point where they can't even teach. I must admit there are teachers who shouldn't be in the classroom--like the one whose third grade class I was assigned to during my student teaching. She held a doctorate that she was vainly proud of, and if you addressed her using any other honorific other than "Dr.", she'd go off on you. She'd get angry if anyone corrected her (I once took her aside and corrected two spelling mistakes in her written assignment on the board, and she was apoplectic). I recall another teacher who insisted that the phrase "the red hat" in an assignment was a sentence. I told her that it wasn't; there was only an article, an adjective, and a noun. She simply said that she was the teacher of the class (I was her assistant at that time) and she ran her class the way she wanted to. The next day, she was inundated with notes from parents telling her that she was wrong about "the red hat".
I now work in another field where written daily reports are required. I get annoyed when I see some of what's written by some of my colleagues and some of my supervisors. Quite a few of them are young adults and in the past would have been the ages of the youngsters I used to work with and many of them don't know a verb from a house. They are the result of a school system that does not teach and any person who seeks to try to reform and change things is bitterly opposed. I greatly fear for children in many of the school systems in America today...

I am a homeschooler, I've never taught in a public school. I did consider it, but I saw the decline in the schools and decided no.
If I had not seen teacher stories elsewhere on FB and YT, I may not believe these stories myself. It's crazy and very unbelievable that our school system is the way it is. I'm glad you got out and are speaking out. We need a school reformation. I hear about state testing and how 2nd graders have crippling anxiety over it. I can't imagine my 2nd grader doing such serious testing so often (state test is every 3 years starting in 3rd) and in our area, homeschoolers consistently out perform public schoolers in the state test. And these stories show why that is. Hope teachers who have walked away can band together and get the change that we need in our school system.
