This swap has been done for decades. I don’t see why it’s so special, or such an overlooked thing by new E46 M3 owners today (as there are plenty of videos and write-ups already on how to do this job found on TH-cam/internet), but glad you made the swap. You will definitely appreciate and love to drive the car more with it. 😀
Hey bro honestly I have a lot of respect for your channel because all the other TH-camrs with this video they would have made many videos but you just made one for the whole manual conversion respect for you my dude
Great find. Those e46 m3s are hard to find. I own a e46 m3 carbon black with 113k miles. I only drive it once per week. I’ve done the fan delete with mishimoto fan and controller. Great upgrade because of the fan clutch exploding. I bought the equipment and can run the diagnostics from my laptop as well. It has helped me a lot .
Ohhh was waiting for this. I was soo bored during this quarantine thing. It makes me more excited what will happen next. Stay safe brother. Love from india.
Really like your videos lately with PSI. . I have both cars. An e92 with the n54 and e46m3 with a 6spd. This is my favorite video so far. Keep it up 👍.
This is my dream car After E36 M3. it so nice to see this car being fixed, i like your videos man. One day im gonna have a E46 m3 to. until then im driving my E46 318CI with straight pipe and dream about bigger engine xD
I really enjoyed the full follow of the progress from SMG to Manual 6 speed Cristian. The witty banter and Krusty Crab 🦀 menu of parts to install was indeed a plateful and then some for the normal shadytree mechanic. I look forward to rearview mirror replacement, lol, along with the return out of limp mode after the ECU gets flashed. Great video yet again my friend and as always rooting for the best for ya! Peace out brother! 😏👍
Did this conversion in my driveway with just a single jack, had no prior experience just used combination of TH-cam, and forums. Took me almost an entire summer mostly due to waiting on parts or getting trans on/off. Did a RTD shifter and also had the bellhousing modified. The RTD help cut down on parts and work. Also, got a single clutch line instead of the 3 piece, again, it saved me on parts and install. Hardest part was getting the transmission off due to a seized bellhousing bolt and getting it on. Which required a clamp method to help push it in a little and then you can push it in the rest of the way yourself. And for the wiring I found a place that sells a plug n play solution that saves you from tapping the brake pedal circuit. Total cost was under $1900. Would not recommend doing this if it’s your daily unless you have another car to drive. The car will most likely be out of commission for some time. This can be done if you can follow direction and have done sufficient research the rest is all patience.
I wish I had Mechanics like this where I’m from it’s hard to find good trust worthy mechanic these guys know what they’re doing I live in Sioux City, Iowa love your channel I have 335i
The SMG transmission is actually reliable, the un-reliable part is the pump specifically the motor. I own the SMG M3 with 236k miles and I rebuild once the smg pump last year when it giving issue.
I would use a smg as a track car for sure there is actually a smg for sale near me for like 8k but it’s got a ton of miles and I’ve already got a e46 m3 6mt but I’ve thought about buying a second one as a track car
I think it’s ironic that what all of these classic “collectors” are missing is that one of the features that makes the SMG a classic is that it features one of the first mass marketed paddle shift transmissions. When the e46 m3 reaches collectible status in 10 to 15 years most seasoned collectors will be looking for the iconic m3. If your 25 and looking for a cool Daily driver then get a manual that will be more fun to drift and hoon and not cost you $$$. If you are collecting for real find a CSL or a comp package late model in a rare color, smg may even eventually appreciate MORE than the manuals. Most manuals have been thrashed, modded or tracked to worthlessness. my bet is that next to a preserved CSL, the most valuable unicorn will be LSB smg comp package under 50k miles or even a late model under 30k miles in imola, interlagos and if it’s still out there techno violet. I’m always looking....
I have a e46 m3. And to tell the reuth I wanted the smg. Andnfor a few reasons. It works. I love the fact I can be cruising down the high way the not working about shifting then some guy comes up on my side in a grand Cherokee alli have to is either hit the paddle or the shifter and go down as many gears as it will allow it rev matches so no breaking effect then all I have to do is floor it and im in front on them. Dam dude. Try driving a manual like that . And second gear shifts feel like someone is kicking in the side. I love that. Plus with launch control, burn out mode . People complained becasue when the car was first released the pump motor would fail like any electric motor can. (They should of went brushless) and bmw didn't have a break down on the pump so you could buy just the motor. End result you had to pay 3500 -4500 for the whole unit. Now all these years later , company's have sourced the individual parts that make up the smg unit. And now you can buy just the motor for 400 bucks and csn even replace.it with out removing the smg unit from the car. And why would you have to disconnect the lines unless doing the clutch or the the valve unit fails. Witch never is the case its always the pump motor. Shit for 400 bucks and a few times you could of fixed this car. And to say something about the salmon relay failing. Its funny why it fails or peole.ssy it fails. A relay is just a switch. That's all it is . Inside that little plastic box are little copper contacts that move power to pump motor. Well what happens is the motor brushes begin to wear and the motor pulls more current and it wears these contacts. The motor is just showing signs of wear. I understnd why. It runs alot. When you first unlock the csr or open a door the trunk it runs the pump to prime the system for the first shift out of first (Park). Then is always running to keep pressure up . The harder you are on it the more it runs. Well the motor brushes get hot and start burning and like I said pull more power threw the relay . Its fused at 40 amps but that 40 amp fuse won't blow because of how fuses work and it just burns the contacts in the relay. Now people get lucky that after a new relay the motor still spins but is just on borrowed time. The motor will fail soon . And as I said its 400 bucks for a new one. Not to bad. Figuring the cost of a alternator or starter, wiper motor, window, or door lock motor , fill pump. Witch in turn is the same thing. I like the smg. And you know , now even if your girl doesn't know how to drive stick. She can still drive your m3 and you don't have to worry about replacing your clutch next weekend.

Nice vid for what it's worth, but I do want to point out that when you ask a business which makes its money off of people not going at it the DIY route whether one would or would not be able to do the swap themselves, it takes a very naive individual to take them for their word. They seem very friendly, very nice, but for one, you don't replace parts that aren't bad (clutch), and I am certain that if patient, most people with a little skill with a wrench could get the job done. As you said yourself, $2500 just in labor. A lot of people who take on projects such as this would rather take they time doing the work themselves and spend that money on a combination of coilovers, a turbo kit, forged internals, or a new exhaust system, whatever it may be, $2500 gives you a lot to work with if you're doing the work yourself. So if you got the money, sure, get it done professionally and don't worry yourself, it sure is hella convenient I'll give you that much.

Looked for the prices in Belgium for the e46 m3 on www.autoscout.be . Not for the average joe. Prices start at 20000 € for a decent example. Don't know the fuel tank capacity but lets say 60 l for 400km. Now with corona the fuel is cheap but will rise to 1.5€ /l. 90 € for 400km or 250 miles. Still a great car, a classic in my opinion but not for the poor.
Nah, Singapore car prices is the highest in the world. An used E46M3 like this would probably cost US$5k (depreciation) before taxes per annum. A 2010 E92 335i is costs US$40k for next 10 years of usage only. Our govt controls car life span of 10 years. Any extension for use is subjected to another about US$30k of taxes (every 10 years).

While changing the oil pan you should have probably changed the rod bearings too.
We noticed that someone had already addressed them.
