@riser not really. That generation of bmw and all earlier generations are when bmw used to be reliable. The e46 changed that a little bit, but nowhere near bmws after the e46, bmw went downhill in reliability after that. You can’t own bmws after 2005 without a lot of repair bills. I mean take a look at the e30 m3 15 years ago you could buy them for 5k-10k now they are going for around 100k and one of the cleanest examples ever sold went for 250k. Now look at the e36 m3 same thing, you used to be able to buy them for 5k 10 years ago now they go for 30k and are still rapidly rising. M cars always appreciate in value over time.
@riser always believed that until recently. Ive owned an E36 M3 and now I own an E46 M3. The E36 M3 I bought back in 2014 was worth 6k. Today, that same E36 M3 is worth 10-12k and rising. Not to mention the increasing prices of the E30 M3..... Buying a used M3 today is one of those financial decisions that have taken its turn. You can own and enjoy an older generation M3 and sell it for more than you bought it for. It’s now an appreciating asset.

@Chaminda Thushara Ruwan Kasturi I owned one modified by Dinan. Even with an extended warranty it’s more temperamental than a Ferrari. Not to mention the cost of the SMG system when it goes bad which it does. I switched to Mercedes after that experience.
Chaminda Thushara Ruwan Kasturi I never had a problem with the SMG. I could take it to redline and it would shift flawlessly. Long term I know some of the components in the SMG system fail and could cost $6k to fix. The manual is better but there are other issues on the car regardless of the transmission that it has.
Chaminda Thushara Ruwan Kasturi the engine is not bullet proof. I hope you don't buy one and suffer a financial headache. Ts an amazing car to drive but will make you cry when it breaks down on the side of the room.
@Chaminda Thushara Ruwan Kasturi the M3 uses the VANOS that is plagued by electrical problems and eventual failure of the control unit. Camshaft gear bolt failure could cause major damage to the engine. Rod bearing failure is another issue. The water pump fails prematurely. The subframe can also crack as most BMWs but especially on the M3. I’m sure there are more issues. I bought my car with less than 10k miles. I put another 50k on it before my warranty expired and sold my car.

It's my all time favourite M3, the E36 generation, though I love the E46 M3, one of the reasons being because of NFS Most Wanted Black Edition 2005.
I agree, the E36 is the underrated child in the M3 lineup. Most M3 enthusiasts either go for the E30 or E46.

I had 2 e36 m3 , German spec 210kw and euro spec 232kw it was the king if the road in 90's very underrated with looks and power these, TH-camrs and journalists are sleeping 😂!

It is definitely my favourite M3 model. It has perfect dimensions, as a coupe. And it’s quad exhaust certainly helps. I love them. Thanks for a very thorough and insightful video.
Just recently purchased one and I’m documenting my build on my channel! E46 M3 is definitely a great car to own right now, you’ll be even more lucky to find one with subframe reinforcement, Vanos bulletproofing and rod bearings already done 👍🏽

Thanks for the video. Fortunately I bought my e46 m3 last year, and is in excellent condition (low mileage). Grey, black interior and the best part, of course, is the manual coupe.

I own one it’s a great car. Drive it from time to time. 125k miles. I’ve driven quite a few cars. The M4 is a beast and underrated from the factory. Slays the canyons. But it’s too much power. E46 is just right to have good fun without losing your license. You may get tickets
I think there is something special about the E46 M3. I drove both an SMG and a 6 speed manual. There is nothing wrong with the SMG, but the manual is preferable, of course. The last E46 I drove was beat to hell. It had something like 150K miles, everything in the interior was falling apart. But that power train was damn near bulletproof. That car refused to die.
Hahaha glad I picked one up a few months ago before everyone starts seeing these videos and the prices go up up up. Absolutely love it tho no regrets at all

Owned my factory manual lci for 6 years now. Bought at the bottom of the price cycle by sheer luck and now they're very expensive. Love everything about it. Even the lack of reliability at times lol
Never seen this guys channel but I know why I was recommended the google gods know me and the love for the M3, and mr ideal I have to say you nailed it almost perfectly. I have had 3 E46, one 3 series, and two M3’s. Over 11 years. Top of the daily driving food chain as far as my opinion (yes I have also driven many other cars and am not just a bmw nut) the facts he is stating are why. ..anywho the reason for my comment, maintenance: one was normal with the odd repair expected, one was brutal with $10k plus in upkeep over 3 years ... before a drunk driver hit me and it had been perfectly running for 6 months....ughghghg. Then I purchased another from a local car club friend who was moving on and I still only regular upkeep, it is I think bang for buck the best. The smiles, the looks, the love, and now the history. I fear the day I lose this one and won’t be able to justify another at classic demand. Idc to sell really so for now, M3 is king and always has been for me.

Missed out on the E46 M3 at their cheapest in the U.K., bought about 5-7 years too late and had to pay a premium for a good one... however still a bargain and absolutely love it! 100% a keeper!!! SMG is awesome as long as you’ve had the CSL software upgrades done!
Glad I bought mine when I did. 06 competition package with 80k miles. Love it and got a pretty good deal on it. Smg is the only thing I don't much like but it's grown on me.

I got one for 3 years now. It's a ton of fun to drive and the design is just stunning and timeless.
I have a manual, which is just one step up as a fun factor, but if you buy an SMG, I advice to tune the ECU by TTSF Tune, it makes the SMG better then the improve CSL SMG. Well worth the money.

I lucked up back in April and bought my 05 M3 right at 15k. Seriously one of the cleanest examples i’ve seen. Dealers couldn’t move inventory during covid so it was marked down almost 8k. Is seriously clean too. Even the little rear center console rolling door is brand new. Yes it’s an SMG car but I caught it right before this latest price hike. 110k miles on it and at first I didn’t want to rack up miles on it but that’s not me. Car will be driven.... properly. Value will keep rising and I will keep it in perfect condition till I decide to part with it which I have no plan on doing so mileage be dammed.

this guy knows his shit. good video. only thing i don't get is why people hate on manual swaps. i did mine 5 years ago and put 77k miles on it (including many track days) and it's never given me problems
And that's why I own two of them; a manual and an smg that I'll probably convert.

I don’t know if I would necessarily avoid swapped cars. I got mine done from a reputable shop and it feels identical to a stock manual except all of my parts to make up the manual are brand new. It’s a pretty straight forward swap and as long as the bell housing is correct there should be no issues with it.
Sadly the E46 3 Series are rare as heck in my country so it's hard to find even if I can afford it lol

I got to own a e46 sedan at the age of 17 and I fell in love how they looked and drive and then I started having issues with it since it was a beater car I started looking at m3s and fell in love again like dreamed of them until I convinced my dad to cosign for me after I found a 2002 smg 124kmi only one owner garage kept only for 14k and I'm working hard to pay it off and I enjoy every single mile I have put on it since this was around Christmas and it almost going to be a year I've owned it I love it and I would trade it for anything that's my bby ,

I owned the a 2002 laguna seca blue exterior with matching leather interior convertible - It was a real head turner! I ended up selling it to an enthusiast in Bangkok of all places before emigrating from UK to NZ in Jan 2017. I will forever miss my e46 m3 but glad I can say that I once owned one.

@@FunnyMannager I am no longer an owner unfortunately. But I can say that when I was an owner it was expensive to run (especially in sports mode!). Cost to maintain was expensive. Any part to replace is considerably more money. My M3 needed some attention to the hood and the differential needed replacing as well due to an oil leak. But to be honest, for me it was all worth it. I owned it for 1 year and drove it everyday with a big smile on my face!

Despite SMG being a POS transmission, there’s one good thing about it...
It’s still a manual transmission. You can get rid of the SMG pump (which is responsible for hydraulically shifting gears) with a working clutch pedal.

Selling my 04 tiag 6 speed was one of the saddest days of my life, it was literally my daily and I must of got a good one because I had no major problems in 90k Miles. If you get the subframe done your good. Arghh I wish I just kept it, I have been looking for one the last couple months and mine exact spec that I sold in 2015 is $10k more now, crazy.
