  • Competition in the OLED monitor space is really heating up. In today's review we're checking out the Asus ROG Swift PG32UCDM OLED monitor. We're gonna talk about some hot topics like DisplayPort 2.1 and Dolby Vision. And I'll show you a feature called Aspect Control that I think puts this monitor at the top of the list...at least for now.

    **The info about the front facing light at **3:16** is incorrect. There is a separate setting under system that's not grouped with the rest of the lighting options so it CAN be disabled - just tested it. Thanks to @isn1p12 for the catch. **
    Also for those curious about input latency hit with Aspect Control, can confirm it adds .3ms for processing. Well worth it imo.

    the reason why 27" isnt 1440p or 24" 1080p is simply because it displays the actual physical pixels for those sizes, a 1:1 readout. So since this is a 140ppi monitor it simply has more pixels at 27" compared to a 1440p version, as those only result in 110ppi. But good thing that you can still use a higher resolution input which gets downscaled, so 1440p on the 24" mode looks super crisp as you mentioned in the video.

    • @lindseyhunt1090garageb
      @lindseyhunt1090garageb 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      lol i was watching that. made no sense. how can a 32 inch monitor be 4k and then make the screen smaller to 27 and say at 4k it looks amazing lol. its not 4k... like what..

    • @patrikmedia
      @patrikmedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lindseyhunt1090garageb I mean you can still use 4K resolution but it's essentially just downscaled. so in theory it should look equal as clean or slightly cleaner because of smoother edges, as in forced anti aliasing due to downsampling. but I would not recommend to downsample, just use the native resolution each mode provides and you don't waste any extra gpu power for minimal benefits.

    • @paul2609
      @paul2609 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@patrikmedia On other reviews the 27/24" mode is not 4K downscaled, Windows reported back a weird resolution like 2xxx * 1xxx-ish to fit the 27/24" scale to enable the black borders.

    • @patrikmedia
      @patrikmedia หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@paul2609 yeah I know, but you can still just pick the higher resolution variant, it's just not the default/recommended resolution in Windows. either way, there is little point in doing so, best to just stick with the recommended resolution for 1:1 scale.

    UPVOTE SO MORE PEOPLE SEE THIS IMPORTANT DISLAIMER! The real reason why DSC is an issue is that on nvidia GPU's it causes a 3 second black screen when tabbing out and on monitors that don't require DSC like HDMI 2.1 or DIsplayport 2.1, the tabbing out is instant and responsive. No weird issues at all. DSC's compression was never it's issue, it's at least lossless in our experience. But The black screen for a few seconds is absolutely related to DSC. Nvidia has no fix for this.

    • @paul2609
      @paul2609 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @andreas7278
      @andreas7278 หลายเดือนก่อน

      DSC is not lossless at all. By definition it is a lossy compression algorithm just like MP3s are for sound files. The marketing term "virtually lossless" used for DSC is just a marketing name and is defined by "when all the observers fail to correctly identify the reference image more than 75% of the trials" to be precise. Can you detect MP3 from lossless files? With crappy headphones it might be hard, hook it up to anything decent and it's plainly obvious. DSC is not the same quality but it is a very good practical solution to the bandwidth limitation of the past. It's time to face it out though since we have had new interfaces for a while already at our disposal. But DSC is lossless, no way around that. I am not sure what you mean by saying "it's at least lossless in our experience". I assume that you meant that it has not been bothering you in practice which is perfectly fine but it's not lossless and what does "at least lossless" even mean? Better than lossless generating additional information which wasn't even there to begin with?

      Even HDMI 2.1 will use DSC for this resolution/refresh rate. Also I don’t know what good this “important disclaimer” is when no nVidia card has DP 2.1 and I don’t think any monitor does either. It’s not really a big deal, and if it is you can just run in fullscreen borderless and sacrifice like 5 fps.

    If you play 4k you're better off pushing the monitor back enough if that's a possibilty than reducing size to 27 otherwise you'll lose some clarity.
    But if the rig is struggling with 4K I would definitely consider opting in at 27 or 24.5 at those "odd" resolutions as those would be equivilent for native for this monitor at those sizes.
    It's pretty cool and unique that it's an option and it definitely adds more wiggle room to manage to get competitive games hit that 240 target with a good rig! Definitely peakes my interest to get this monitor

When I was browsing for reviews of this monitor your video popped up several times and I didn't click on it because the title didn't say review in it and there is a sea of videos that literally just discuss the monitor without actually having it in their possession (reading spec sheets of the website etc).
    If you want to stand out from those and get more clicks I'd recommend making it clear in your titles that it's actually a review and not just a discussion video. It took about 3 recommendations from TH-cam for me to finally give in and watch this and only then did I realise it was a review that I should watch, by the way, you did a great job reviewing it :)

    I'll be waiting for the PG32UCDP model that has 480Hz mode also matte too. Being 32" for competitive fps to me will be no problem, can easily push it a bit further away, 9dm dept desk.
    The simulated physical size and custom resolutions is neat. I appreciate high PPI but for some fps games I can literally do 1080p at 50% res scale hah so scaling thing whatever. Though I'll probably just use 1080p 480hz at native for some games. Will push it far enough to make it feel like 24"/27" if I want, easy.
    But great stuff, really aside from lack of DP 2.0 for futureproofing, another thing I'd like to see is full Hz BFI and BFI sync.

    I'm getting the Alienware 32" 4K 240Hz monitor in a few days. Can't wait! Even better, Alienware gives you 3 year burn-in warranty so there's really nothing to worry about, especially if you have a monitor spare in your house to replace it during such warranty servicing.

    I appreciate the dolby vision acknowledgement, it's a pretty trash situation across the pc gaming and console world rn and I hope it gets better. I personally use it for blu ray and 4k movies since I rip them onto a local hard drive to watch on my pc or stream locally to my tv. In that very niche use case dolby vision ends up being a big win for movies when its supported, but still needs hoops jumped through and fun little annoyances to get working smoothly

    Does 27 and 24 inch modes have an affect on the input latency or refresh rate performance (e.g UfO image clarity) noone seems to test these and in my opinion these are clearly why FPS players might want to pay extra for this monitor. Thank you

    the aspect control feature is amazing however it’s not really the same as having a 4k 27” or 24.5” monitor as there obviously isn’t physically that many pixels in those sizes. Either keeping the default resolution or a lower one that scales well will probably give you the best image and performance.

  • @hank9th
    @hank9th 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'd love to see a feature that lets you dynamically change the "virtual" monitor size and position on the larger screen.
    Basically a fully customizable "crop" so you can get any screen size you want at a particular aspect ratio & pixel scale.

    After using the LG CX 48" 4K 120Hz OLED TV for 18 months and the LG C2 42" 4K 120Hz OLED TV for 12 months both without burn-in I have to say I'm not too afraid of my MSI 321URX getting burn-in. Especially with all the prevention settings there are, just like with the Asus PG32UCDM.
