I just want to thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I have used your strategies in my first term and completed my first term in about 7 weeks and tackling my 2nd. I am not moving as fast as you but i am completing about a class every 10 days. While working 60 plus hours a week. Thank you for your amazing advice!
Thank you for sharing that Patricia! It helps motivate me to make more videos. Sounds like you're doing a remarkable job given that you work a lot. Impressive
Lol well I say “back in the day” because some people still assume I’m a student. No problem! Glad your able to get prepared and oriented before starting. Good luck
Here I am replying on another video of yours. This video is amazing and helpful! Since you have a small audience, I will keep asking Q and commenting then 😄
After spending over 30k for a diploma, I'm really considering WGU but I just worried about credits being able to transfer to other universities in Canada in the future. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Hey Justin, you DO have access to pre-assessments prior to the start date. This makes it much easier to "pregame". I did watch Josh's videos prior to my start date of 2/1 and have completed first 12 classes in 13 days while working full-time. Great work by Josh and yourself to help the next line of students!
Good to know! I wish I did more objective assessments (OA) in my program. I had one only, and wrote 30-ish papers instead. I didn't get a good sense of the best way to navigate OAs. They also do the "Course Planning" tool before courses (OAs and PAs based courses), which helps get the ball rolling to some degree. It's amazing you were able to get so much done in 13 days! That's impressive. I'm sure people would love to learn about your story and strategies too.
@@lifebyjustin I see, that makes a lot of sense! I should specify that out of 12, only 3 were PAs. And from what I've seen and heard, PAs for a bachelor's program are not nearly as rigorous as master's program.
I REALLY appreciate your videos! Thank you so much! My brain thinks like your brain, so having a quick video to hear your strategies makes my efficiency skyrocket! I am starting the MSc in Curriculum and Instruction on May 1st, 2021. Three questions: #1 - What text books are used for the MSc C & I program? #2 - Will I have to use my kindergarten students to implement/complete my Capstone project? The reason I ask this is because school starts Sept. 2nd and my plan is to finish by August 31st. #3 - How long does it take for WGU to send an official electronic transcript to the employer (from the time I click the "finish" button on the entire program to my school district now has my official transcript and can move me up on the pay schedule)?
You're welcome! I hope the videos help make your WGU journey easier and clearer in some way :) 1) There's no specific textbook for the MScCI program because every course will have a different eText book (which means there are a lot of textbooks). The program changed from 2020 to 2021 so there are different courses. I imagine you are asking because you want to get a head start. I would ask your program mentor what the eTextbook is for the first course. 2) Historically, it was mandatory that you conduct research with students as part of the "action research" capstone because this method is a real-world intervention by way of a research investigation. However, the Teacher's College changed to MScCI program so that the capstone includes "applied research" to give WGU students more options and flexibility. You might not need to use students as part of applied research. I would start talking to your Mentor now about the applied research requirements. Also, start brainstorming ideas early on to get the ball rolling. I started saving examples of capstone projects and reading them in my first month. As your mentor to give you access to the repository they have of exemplary past capstones. 3) Hmm, I'm not 100% sure. I graduated at the beginning of January 2021 and I received the mailed official transcript a month later (in print form). There is an option to have a transcript mailed to another institution and I would image it takes the same amount of time. Keep in mind, I'm in Canada. Transcripts are sent out by a 3rd party organization called the "National Student Clearinghouse". I would connect with them to ask. Hope that helps (sorry they weren't black and white responses). Good luck starting May 1st!
Hi. I’m getting ready to start this Masters and have to have it finished before a job. I start on July 1. Education Technology and Instructional Design. Do you recommend any video series’s or webinars or anything to prime me before Dec. 1?
Hey ! A question I have is how many tasks on average would you say I need to complete each week to graduate within one year ? I was told by my mentor to not read the material and go straight to the tasks. Is this what you did?
It really depends how many courses there are in the program and how many assignments there are in each course (but it varies). Some graduate programs have 7 courses while others have 22 courses from what I've seen. Also there can be between 1-5 assignments per course. So, if available for your program, you have get a program overview document of all the courses and assignments from your mentor and then crunch the math. And I have a lot of video explaining my process but in a nut shell, I looked at the performance task (papers) criteria, noted knowledge areas and knowledge gaps, did some of the readings (not all), took notes, brainstormed ideas, free wrote, refined and revised and submitted.
Is it possible that you could share an "outline" of how you set up your pre-game paper the night before writing it? Or possibly just do a bit more in-depth description of how you like to do it?
Hi Kennedie, I actually didn't have a detailed outline for my pre-gamed paper. I just compiled a bunch of relevant notes that I would reference during my paper writing day. The notes came from readings and videos I would find and watch online (TH-cam usually). Once I was in the program and had access to the grading rubrics, I would start my paper the night before my main day of writing. I usually got all the titles and subtitles into into my paper template during the night before. That was after reviewing the grading rubric that has titles for each graded section. I then wrote my paper the next day by using the conventions I outlined in my "How I Complete a Performance Assessment (Paper) in One Day" video.
Hey man, I love your videos. I'm Canadian as well. I currently live in China and tried to set up a phone call with WGU with an Enrollment Councelor, but they could not reach me as Im currently living in China. I am hoping to do the elementary education program, but they are being very unhelpful. Do you have a contact that I would be able to email? since phone calls seem to be impossible from here. thanks, and appreciate any help.
Thanks! And I don't have an email that I can remember and find, I apologize. I do remember emailing and calling at the time (years ago) was very challenging and took me many months to confirm my enrollment.
What kind of jobs can you expect with a business degree, salary etc? I was planning on an IT/ networking/ cyber security degree but I figured I could get some certs instead and get a job so I think a business degree is more valuable since you most banker jobs require a degree? Correct me if I'm wrong.
At WGU you get certs while taking the classes. Check out Josh’s video like he mentioned, he has a video showing a sample resume and their are many certs given for the classes so you could hypothetically start working while still in school. Take on a Help Desk job probably if youre looking at just the IT degrees and then move up once you graduate. If youre getting a Comp Sci degree then you can probably get a decent job starting out, no less than $60k starting out probably. You should be creating projects while in class to showcase your skills and add to your resume.
Hi M, I get this question a lot. I don't know if I have a solid answer unfortunately. What I know is the university advertises "no international students", though, I was very persistent about asking for the opportunity when I was applying and eventually they just said "we'll make an exception, yes you can enroll". I think many departments say "no" but in the Teacher's College, I was able to talk to multiple enrollment counselors who talked with their managers and somewhere along the line of communication, someone with decision-making power said "yes we will admit him". Not sure what motivated them to say yes. I don't think it had to do with where I'm located in Western Canada. The only reason for not admitting based on geographical location would be time zone issues but Canada has the same time zones as America.
I just randomly found this. I hovered over your thumbnail and saw my face and got super confused lmao 😂😂. Great video, and thanks for the shoutout!
Haha, that would have been an interesting surprise when hovering. No prob!
Josh have you stopped doing videos?

Josh Madakor is definitely a phenomenal resource for WGU-related info, especially with IT degrees. Very informative video, Justin👍
He is indeed, and he's done very well on TH-cam
And thanks for the comment, glad to help!

Are the pre assessments the exact same questions as the real assessment?
No they are different. Similar or the same concepts though
@lifebyjustin as it relates to research papers for the Masters degree, what’s required MLA or APA style?
APA formatting would be the one. Version 7 is the latest edition (at the time of this comment)
