i have never caught fish with a proper rod and reel but i had caught baby tilapia with a stick and some dirty string with a bottle tab when i was 10 in Indonesia in the paddy fields i also saw a crab eaten in half probably by eels.

True true! Just that around here where I live (coastal), access to a close river like that where I can reliably catch multiple species like that is pretty rare
dankleaves PA here, you can catch trout (stocked of course ): ), bass, and a few species of panfish. Other species that I don't prefer to eat but like to catch include carp, Pike, muskee, catfish, Creek chubs, crayfish, etc. All in the same river. I don't really expect much different other than species in other parts of the country. Love catching carp though as they are the biggest fish we have here and put up.the best fight.
I love Andrew because he’s so positive about everything, you could say that he had one more day to fish and he’s dead the next, and he’s just sit there smiling catching crawfish
Fly Fishing: #1 -- a good rod does help a lot, those cheap whippy rods don't load well. #2 -- lots of false casting with a nymph rig can always lead to problems, even if you've been doing it forever. Try a roll cast, or let the water load your rod at the end of your drift and just chuck n duck it back up. (less chance of everything getting tangled) #3 -- you had a lot of line out, try a quicker cast with less line on your backcast and let the power of the forward stroke take out your fly line. Also -- watch casting vids and keep working at it! It's super rewarding when you get it all right and hook up. Great vids, man.
Good post. Fly fishing is like many pastimes. It's rewarding because it is difficult. Takes a while to learn but it's a skill that will stay with you for life. Like golf - but better.
Yep. A fish on the fly is about as rewarding as it gets. It also provides singular focus, which is one of the best things for the mind. I sold my golf clubs long ago....
Regarding Andrew's broken fly rod. I believe he had bought a Sage fly rod. Sage rods come with a lifetime warranty. I believe that applies to accidental breakage even. When researching fly rods for purchase check into the warranty. Accidents do happen, car doors, pick up tailgates, etc.
$75 payment to “fix” your sage rod. The butt end of my sage approach 5wt rod broke off when I took a fall fishing on some rocks. Paid $75 to fix and took about 3 months and i could tell they glued back my original butt end of the rod. Which I thought was kind of cheap for such a prestigious brand. Anyways I still use the rod and am a fan of their equipment.
With the craw dads, next time you catch some, you can purge them so they are cleaner before you cook them put them in a container of water and pour some salt in the water it will cause them to throw up the contents in their stomach making them taste better when you cook them. God bless
I know what your talking about but them being in a clean stream there actually alot cleaner then any other crawfish i kno this place and they actually dont need to be purged
Isaiah Stanley Nah, you’re missing the point. It’s not about how clean they are... it’s about what they eat. When you eat the crayfish without purging its stomach you’re potentially consuming whole undigested bugs which sometimes have a bitter/off putting flavor to us humans. Best to purge the stomach, no matter how clean they are.
I have no idea how to fish or how to set up camp or anything about the wilderness but I love watching your videos! Learn something new from your videos everytime! If you can make a workshop for beginners that would be awesome!
Thank you for inspiring me and all my young fishermen friends I know I’m not a great fishermen by any means but you have kept me fishing even after geting skunked 5 times in a row thank you.
I don’t know anything about fishing whatsoever I find your channel so entertaining the scenery is beautiful. You gained new sub. Pls don’t stop uploading the video 👍👍
Fishing tip: This is a great tip that most people don't use. Applies to all fishing. Sharpen the hook frequently. Get a little hook sharpener, they are cheap, learn how to use it, use it often, after every fish, after getting snagged, after dragging bottom. If fish are getting off your hook, sharpen it. It will penetrate easier and deeper. Cheers from B.C.
Fly fishing is all about patience and timing... as well when you are casting focus mostly on moving your elbow and keeping the rod to a 12 o’clock 2 o’clock pattern. 12 o’clock being straight above your head. Hopefully this helps but the best way is 100% just to practice and stay at it. It takes everyone a while to get used to it. Don’t give up on it!! Good luck
He's right, it's a hand dance, it's watching the line and timing the move of the rod to keep it moving in smooth lines. There's a "little" wobble you do that makes the whole movement a very narrow oval that keeps you from getting the bullwhip effect, because the entire line needs to stay in motion until you finally lay it out.
Just watching the suggested videos (started watching your channel because it helps me a lot to avoid anxiety and get sleepy as they are comforting af) and man... That smile at 15:46 just broke me, I'm smiling too. I'm so happy for him. Greetings from Mexico. Keep doing amazing stuff, and thank you, I really mean it.
Fly fishing for trout is a blast, two things, the rod and reel don't matter all that much, but invest some money into the right fly line, be sure you have the right line for the fishing you're going to do. (Weight forward, sinking, or whatever) and you'll get way better results. Also look up on TH-cam how to single and double haul the line and you'll get way more distance in you cast and it'll take the slack outta your line.
I've been binge watching your videos almost all day, and I love how you always teach and educate thoroughly in each of the videos - regardless of how repetitive it is. I greatly appreciate that.
Nor. Cal is the best place for these kinda adventures. Thanks, man! that brought back some memories- minus the getting rescued and fined bit. Good stuff!

hey Matts, next time, don't give the crayfish water. Just like with crabs, they will breathe out all the oxygen in the water and die. crayfish and lobster lasts longer than crab for some reason though so it's not as bad. crayfish live outside of water pretty long too. Otherwise the video is extremely entertaining, I found the best way to watch this is to put it on while I grade papers.
