- Punishing a Brand New Car in the World's Oldest (Cheapest) Motorsport // Lands End Trial Pt 2. In this episode Jonny Smith convinces Kia to let him take a brand new Picanto 1.0 turbo GT Line on the Landsend Trial. This may be the most cost effective motorsport left, but it's definitely not the mildest.
The trial was designed over 100 years ago to prove the robustness and reliability of new motorcycles. Then cars started entering. 2024 marked the 100th running event, so Jonny wanted to see if a new car could handle the punishment.

The cant is just the definition of an absolute unit on wheels
It really is. We were surprised and chuffed to bits at what it could achieve with very little aftermarket parts, road tyres (from a van) and some strategic under-armour.
Wait until this Sunday's full length episode when you can see how it tackled the entire Lands End Trial.
@@TheLateBrakeShow honestly kinda tempted to get one as a first car as I passed my test about a year ago and insurance might be ok for one of those. But the manual and 3 cylinder combination, match made in heaven

This sport is a bit like being a rural supermarket delivery driver. Driver instructions: Plz deliver to cottage halfway up mountain 1 mile past 'unsuitable for motor vehicles' sign, if lost plz call.
This made me laugh as I've done exactly this with a brand new Sainsbury's van on its first day out! 😄
Done some delivery driving in countryside. Spot on. Given wrong address and ended up on some muddy tractor track 😂
Disappointed I didn’t see you there Jonny, but I set out early on a bike. I only started doing these MCC trials last year. Aside from the history and low cost, this also has to be the friendliest motorsports event. It is you and your car against the course, not other competitors, so the sense of comradery is incredible, with everyone helping each other out. When I melted my clutch at Exeter this year - there was no end of offers of help - including two chaps in a van who gave me a lift all the way home to my house in Kent! Superb fun. Looking forward to Edinburgh already. Loving this series!

Great video. Lots of new cars have entered the trial previously but of a different era. We did the trial in our VW Baja and at one time were behind a pre war MG that did its first trial in 1936 straight out of the showroom
I bought a Kia Picanto after having one as a rental car while on holiday. It reminded me of the pleasure of a light weight, small car which drives surprisingly well so it's nice to see this humble little terrier doing this challenge.
Best of luck with this intriguing project and I think the little Kia will do you proud.

Honestly, I was sat there with my mouth open in amazement, watching this little Kia valiantly attempting deeply-rutted tracks that I'd struggle to walk down! You've both done an amazing job and boy - Part 3 is going to be something else!
I did the lands end about 30 years ago in a fully prepared Citroen Dyane on AMI chassis 1100cc.in Front wheel drive class this post has brought back many memories happy ones-which inspired to build a class 8 special!
I would have to argue that autotesting is the cheapest form of motorsport. You can turn up in a completely standard road car and do an event for £20 or £30.
I did a whole season of autotesting in a Chrysler Avenger estate while I was finishing off my MG Midget for the next season. With a certain irony I did better in the Avenger 😂
I've worked on and off for many years on farms and smallholdings. A little nugget like this is as valuable, workwise, as any 4x4. Great stuff 👍
I've taken plenty of hire cars on terrain like that 😂. A polo in Rhodes and a Fiat 500 in Lanzarote being particular highlights.
You should have put the checker plate with the checkers pinting up. This way you won't have the added fricction on deep ruts

I knew this would be awesome when I saw the title of the first part. Also, just by showing off this car you increase its value so much, even though we don't even know that it made the trial. I already want one.
I'd only ever heard of trials before this, and certainly never watched one.
Now that I know though, it seems like the sort of thing I'd very much enjoy attempting, but I'll settle for living vicariously from abroad!
The fact you're doing unspeakable things to a "new" car just makes it so much better!

I remember going on White Water Kayaking trip to Fort William in Scotland. We used a hired transit van to transport the boats. I can remember following a Land Rover Discovery down a very rough track to access a river, we had no issues at all.

A few people have started sharing stories like this. Amazing how we forget these memories and think you need a 4x4 for back lane driving in rural UK...
I remember being shocked, as a youth, when my Dad returned a rental Seat something or other with the exhaust pipe (I suppose the last section) in the boot. It had fallen off in vigorous Menorcan driving. His firm view was that “it’s okay as long as you return all the parts you borrowed. They don’t need to be attached.”

With open differential cars, I use left foot brake as a traction control and it saved me in very tricky situations.
Brillaint videos, great to see the capabilities of the cant. Do love a trial, maybe try the cotswold cloud trials. Would love to see how far this could get up crooked mustard.
