I think your wife should narrate; she is super funny and to the point!
Only if he launches the 4XOverland satyrical channel!
(a thought: can you place the light sensor in a different spot?)
‘This is from the 1970’s’… totally got me 😂
The last hero Troopy will always hold a special place in your heart Andrew. I should have bought that one 😂
First time watching this channel and im in love with his wife. I agree with narration 🤣🫶🏼
😂😂😂
I think the easiest work around for the dash cover and light sensor problem is to do a little modification to the cover by cutting and renewing a little half circle to accommodate the sensor. It might not look as clean but might get the job done 🤷🏻♂️. I’m really looking forward to this build series because I can’t afford to replace my thirteen year old Prado 150 so I’m going to have to experience the joy of a new 4X4 vicariously through you! ❤
Mate I carnt even afford a bloody prado I'm and happy to stick with my old 80series I've got no choice
@@davidmilledge221 hopefully my 150 can last as long as the legendary 80 series!
My Prado is a 120 series model from 2003 so we’ll behind your good self
sell it , and buy a R.R
That vibration at 1500rpm under light throttle is an issue with the Toyota Auto transmission... We had the exact same issue with our 2022 Prado. It got worse over time and Toyota did a software patch that was meant to fix it but it made the box worse. It shuddered and nudged all the time afterwards. It drove us insane which was precisely why we got rid of it and bought a manual 76. This is what I feared with the introduction of the auto. Keep an eye on it Andrew and please keep the community updated on this behaviour and if it gets worse.
I thought Only in the v8 diesel the 6 speed felt out of place. It seems toyota doesnt puch time into their diesel transmission or simply make a transmission for their petrol engines and put it in diesels.
I have a 21 Prado and up to this day I have no vibration at all. But putting supreme diesel has mad it run even better .
@@kubibear2890 I think Higher spec prados dont have much issues while the lower spec do. Maybe thats why they charge almost 100k in australia for a landcruiser prado kakadu with accessories.
It sounds like an harmonic vibration issue. This can be a serious problem to fix because it can require significant design changes. Toyota should have done their harmonic tests.
@@jimmycricket5366 Toyota unfortunately want the customer to sought out the problems they create
Being in Canada I am immensely envious of being able to walk into a Toyota dealer and being able to buy a troopy
Looking forward to the build!!!
This toyota is too good for North America, which is why the government won't let it be sold
Awesome as always.Looking forward to the build series. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
Congrats to you and the Mrs on the new LC and adventures ahead! 🎉
Congradulations,Andrew. Cant wait to see your build.
Congratulations Andrew. Looking forward to the build to see what new ideas you come up with. Particularly interested in the Headspace Campers roof conversion.
Agreed, Australian made in Qld
why does the 2024 versions looks so funny and dumb, previous ones were perfect 😢
@@asimpleguy9667 When I first saw the photos of it, I thought it does look a little odd. But in person, it's actually not bad.
Your wife is a treasure.Great sense of humour. And now I see Cars too. Thanks. 🙂
Pleasure. Anytime. 🥳🥳😁😁
I’m as thrilled as you are 😊 let the good times begin 👍
Excited to follow this build.
I think the move to the 2.8L is a good idea. as you said it's shared with the Hilux, Hiace (and even the coaster). so i reckon it's an ubiquitous engine in desolate parts of the world. in your experience in Africa for example; would the 2.8 have more available spare parts than the V8?
That may take a while until there are enough of these “new” motors around in those areas. Bit like 17” rims, took a long while to be able to procure tyres for that size in isolated areas. The V8 has been around since 2007 which is just short of 20 years.
Fortuner and Prado too.
I really enjoy these videos, I'm planning on buying a 90 series land cruiser for overland purpose, I cant afford a troop carrier but love the aesthetics of the prado 95 too. Thanks for the new ideas and motivation!
One day I hope to pick up a new toyota from the dealership. I wish you all the best - you deserve it Andrew!
Great insight. Really enjoy the channel, thanks 👍
Between you, Mrs 4xoverland and Ronny we have all the honest reviews we need on the new 70.
Edit, just got to the radio antenna... that is an upgrade. I daily drive a 31 year old Hilux Surf, and I mean this quite literally, the only thing not working is the automatic antenna. Not only does it not work, but it makes a ridiculous noise every time I turn accessory on. Do people still listen to FM in their cars? I just stream music and listen to podcasts. All you need is a simple bluetooth head unit for that.
is there an HF radio antenna that can replace the junky stock antenna?
That's a funny, strange and weird question/comment.
😂😂😂
Very excited for this build and rooting for your Andrew. One day I'll apply what I learned from your videos to build my own tourer!
Awesome video mate. Come and see us at Airborne suspension and mechanical in Wangara for your suspension upgrades, tuning and more. We would love to meet you 😊
Glad the 4 cylinder is starting to get you excited, was concerned at the beginning of the video.Looking forward to your ideas about it.
Interesting with gear changes I notice our work hilux auto is horrible unloaded but when we add weight and a load etc it feels fantastic. Will be interested to see if it smooths out with the weight of your build
Looking forward to this build a lot ‼️
Excellent video bro👌🤣 I’m excited to see the progress!👌
Hey Andrew - the 2.8 is substantially fasterunloaded and fully loaded. There is a drag race by fullboost and AIC on youtube where you can see this practically
Ciao from the Veneto! Hope you have a good build. I am happy you can explore the limits of your craft and with any luck you can wrap it in a new color.
Congrats Andrew, I 100% understand what you mean by the satisfactary feel of starting the V8 and 1HZ 'knowing that it will get you there and out of there'. Looking forward to build from Gantsi, Botswana.
I'll be passing through Ghanzi in April.
I look forward seeing your vehicle in person@@4xoverland
Great video and good luck Andrew…will be interesting to see how you can make this car at least look good with your arty eye and experience! Ref auto vs manual, I opine that perhaps for the exception of sand driving as you rightly state, manual is overall much better than an auto when it comes to bush driving (difficult river / ditch crossings, rocky and obstacle laden ground). One simply has much more precise control over the movement of the vehicle over / through the obstacles. I have driven an auto more than several times off road through the bush, especially through obstacles following big game, and on hundreds of k’s of bush two-track here in Africa, and it can be absolutely horrible at times. Manual is a bit more “work” and an auto is on the whole “easier”, especially for General use. I agree. “Pays your money you makes your choice” as they say! Good luck!
I have been watching your channel for some time, I was even a Patreon suporter. I do not think you gained much experience with the 2.8 Toyota diesel and Aisin automatic gearbox. Unless they fixed the past problems, which, knowing Toyota, they most likely did not, but did their utmost to conceale them, you are heading for some surprises. I have gained experience with both 4X4 Toyota and Land Rover over the past decades. Even though I can share some of your views about Land Rover I definitely can not do so when it comes to Toyota and the exceptionally poor reliability experience I gained with this manufacturer accompanied by the non existing warranty. At Toyota the warranty expires once you left the show room. Wishing you best of luck.
I thought Toyota had the best quality and reliability??
Andrew, cheers from Athens, you’re always 10 steps ahead of all of us...
I love your relationship with your wife. She's so cool. A real "Troopy" she is. ❤
Great overview given your years of experience with these types of vehicles. Nothing you mentioned about Toyota Australia surprises me one bit. Most modern car companies dont have passion for what they build or sell. There are exceptions but not in the mass market area. Looking forward to your fit out & to see how you include all the bits & pieces.
😮wow, what a compliment from your wife... I appreciate what you have, on top of what you have done. I tip my hat sir. Love from kenya.
Fantastic mate. Bravo 🙏💪❤️👍
You may still use the dash cover, get a leather expert to make a hole on the cover so that when you push it down to the windscreen that lump gets exposed through the hole and you can still enjoy your space solutions and the dash eluminates nicely.
Thank
I will have the same issue with my cover
Congratulations 🎉
More please 😊.
The classic muscle car scene has known for decades that no amount of technology and improvements will ever replace the smile you get from a V8. The 4x4 community is now starting to realise the same. As the saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement.
Given the several reviews released about this 2,8, that statement is wrong. Almost all positive. Or have I not been watching the same reviews?
@@4xoverlandI absolutely agree the auto, lighter weight and economy will result in a better performing vehicle than the V8 (in most situations) but you’ll never turn the key and grin at it idling, ever. Yourself nor Ronny will disagree with that.
wait until the 4cyl is loaded and has a heavy trailer in tow, winding up a steep curvy track, then you will see and feel the advantage of a V8.
I love your vids man . Love from Australia 🍻
Sounds exciting, looking forward to the loaded weight trials .Your wife is a treasure as is mine Happy trails you 2 .
My friend Kylon made few conversion of older 70 series models in to automatic trans in Poland in his amazing workshop aka rebuild center Wyprawa4x4.
Its super nice that Toyota finnaly provide 70 series with that "modern" touch. It will help a lot of begginers dive in to 4 wheeling with safety and style.
Thanks Andrew
Congratulations for your new Rig, thanks for your first impresisions nice the automatic gearbox and their electronic assitances, and off course the better fuel efficiency vs 1HZ, 1HD-T and GD. regards.
The bull bar onnthe bkue troopy was perfect....gave the troopy a tough stance....be interesting to see what you conjure up with the fabricators you collaborate with
Congratulations Andrew🎉
The only reason for the larger side indicator repeaters lights is due to the GVM upgrade to 3510kg which changes the classification of the vehicle.
Plus with the new 2025 Australian Emissions Laws there would be a strong chance the 70series wouldn't pass, possibly another reason for the V8 being dropped from the range!!
I know. But why so ugly?
Different category of ADR specify amount of light/ rise of lense etc… sure they can probably improve the look but why spend the effort 😢
@@4xoverland Probably no money in the development budget for anything more than a "fit for purpose" aesthetic treatment......
@4xoverland
Andrew, you've probably seen this already, but if you haven't, I'm sure it would interest you a lot. I wonder if the 4 cylinder in the Cruiser is highly tuned, and if so, how would that impact it's reliability? How would the Hilux go with these same performance specs?

Hi andrew yes you should use your dash cover, cut a relief in the section that covers the light sensor, re- sew the 2 layers in the section cut back together, and voila😊.
I loved the 4.2 in my 100 series but I can see why the 2.8 is the future and commonality with other LCs and HiLuxes is going to be a plus.
Good luck upgrading.
I am curious if you will like it off road.
I guess you should be able to get better mileage in this.
(about the vibrations -- check the bonnet -- i've seen in other videos that the metal it is not correctly glued)
AAAND you can use direct connection to the battery for light-bar with separate switch..and no canbus.
Your Wife is gifted with excellent sensibilities. Calling out the trucks features resembling the cars movie "Mater" was hilarious. 😅😅😅😅😅
Looking forward! Like you two! BR
Cut a whole on the dash cover. A nice round punch tool with metal eyelets will do the trick. For the corner probably fit UHF/VHF antenna on the bullbar to see where your corner is. Radar obstruction can also be addressed with a visor that has been strategically cut to keep it working. Other channels say the large gaps in the fenders make it easier for additional electrical wires coming to/from engine to the cabin. Also I never expected you to get a factory bull bar to begin with so will watch what you decide on. Can't wait to see this car transform.
Can’t wait to see what you do to this one - it will be absolutely epic ❤
Same as the last 2
Another brilliant video Andrew
I really like your new trophy. I would buy one tomorrow in England if the money was there. look forward to your new build. Much appreciated andrew thank you
@Andrew
FYI
I sound proofed my 1998 Jimny using asphalt/bitumen sound proofing. Small asphalt mats on the inside of any vibrating metal surface stopped the vibration and made the car close to as silent a Rolls Royce.
omg - i just remembered you have some cinematography courses online - i need to remember to sign up - your a very good story teller 🤓
im a software engineer from 9 to 5 - and have just started a media business on the side - just putting together my portfolio over the next few months 😎
Good video. Thanks. That bull bar is horrendous😂!
I had a 2018 2.8 Hilus auto (130kw engine) and there was no turbo lag. It just pulled away without hesitation but ran out of huff at higher rpm. I test drove a 2021 Fortuner with the current 150kw engine and noticed the same turbo lag on takeoff. The engine however pulled very strongly at higher rpm and didn't run out of power. Toyota have not just retuned the engine but also upgraded hardware (bigger turbo which takes longer to spool).
I agree on the indicators. An afterthought. Looks like a wart too.
I agree the bullbar on the blue troop looked great ...overall you made that look very tough so looking forward to seeing what you do with this.
On another note you say initially it had turbo lag then later on says it pulls well overtaking....can you confirm?
The New 70 series improvements look and are much better in my opinion. That front is beautifully designed. I love it and will order myself a the 2.8 Auto in Grey.
Hi Andrew good knowledge comes with age everything you say I like ,the guard brackets are for pedestrian safety which will be useless when a roo bar is fitted
Interesting review.
Congrats Andrew, just make sure you tick the windscreen replacement box in your car insurance. Those windscreens are substantially more expensive to replace than the old LCs with no camera.
I have an exterior sunvisor on my 2019 Holden Colorado LTZ and it does not interfere with the auto wiper gizmo in the top of the windscreen. But the windscreen has a much bigger slope than the Toyota. Sad if you can't get one - I reckon they enhance the "look" of the vehicle. But I am from the Chrome era.. 🙂
Wife opinion on the vehicles is what we need and want on this show.
I also have a vibration at a certain RPM on very hot days and it actually comes from the snorkel. May not be the same vibration as you have but something to check. Test is to stick your hand out the window and press the snorkel against the body and it should go away.
Seen similar on teambullet offroads new cruiser, where the bottom section connects to the upper on the snorkel. I had a vibration from the window wiper motor or whatever it is. wasn’t properly in. Made the whole cab LOUD.
Andrew please remember that toyota technical review said the auto will get slightly hotter than manual in extreme of roading . Th big hump is for larger radiator and its vital part
I'm following with interest. Weighing up whether to go for the 2.8 or one of the last V8s. I hope you take a look at the HEADSPACE CAMPERS pop up roof. They look like they've moved the concept a long way forward. Much steeper angle giving different sleeping options and masses of headroom. Plus a much better (factory) look.
Andrew and gwin, you guys are the definition of couples goals!!
Dash Matt goals
Hi Andrew, this is why after 37 years of landcruiser (and a couple of patrols), i bought a hilux. To see if I like the 2.8 and auto. Like your troopie the hilux gets a vibration and wants to down change. In power mode that doesnt happen. I priced a troopie and it $30,000 more than the hilux. Im frankly struggling to justify moving back to the 70 after all these years. Independent front suspension? Yes weak. Body not as strong eg roof racks? Yes true. But i may adjust the way i camp. Im loving 9.2 litres per hundred.
Anyway. Your build will determine what I do. In the meantime. Inwill drive my 1979 fj45 tonremind me what a landcruiser once was (had a 300 and hated it. Bring back the 80!)
Ps- lane asist in my sr hilux is off from the start. If you want it you have to turn it one plus my track is the same and incan see the p/side edge of he bull bar. Perhaps toyota should build a live axle hilux 🤔
Dear Toyota, we love ❤️ you... However, I can't help but notice that you've purposely not given the option of having a 6 cylinder turbo diesel in this new 70 Series... Even if it were a single turbo it would have been nice.
I do plan on purchasing a 70 Series very soon, but I'll be going for the oldie, but goody normally aspirated in-line 6, 5 door 7 seater (I have a beautiful wife and 6 babies) or if I can fit some extra seats on a V8 70 series, I'll go with that one instead.
As usual exceptional video from Mr. Andrew!
Much respect 🫡 from Angola 🇦🇴
That low speed vibration may be engine power pulses due to converter lock up to save fuel. Biscuit tin built front fender wise. An oversize transmission cooler would be first on my list seeing that you will be doing a lot of 4lo low speed driving.
We have just taken delivery of a new model new shape 70 series single cab in the DRC with the 1HZ motor at our company. I was under the impression that the 1HZ has been discontinued. Can you shed some light on this. Thanks for the great content, cheers Mike
9:20 My 150 Prado does this when the torque converter locks up in cruise mode. Very good for fuel economy but the vibration can annoy some people, I personally like it as I hate slipping automatics, it feels like they are filled with custard as opposed to gears.
Really looking forward to your take on the land cruiser Mini. ( jimney killer) that should be out later this year.
The CAT 6 indicators have clearance light functionality, required by law for a GVM upgrade. So, if one was to increase the GVM on the new 70, they save themselves a few hundred bucks because the new 70 already has them. You probably won't be able to change them ASPW because of the new 70 GVM increase. I have the Dobinsons 3900kg GVM upgrade, their cat 6 indicator lights look classy
Great video Andrew, can’t wait to see what the troopy is gonna be like when finished.
Question: i am a very new to off road driving and lately at my first off-road event i damaged my clutch(my car has no low rage but it is an off roader i promise), what do recommend for newcomers to off-road driving: automatic or maunual gearboxes??
You damaged the clutch because its not an off roader! Because if it had had low range, you would have used it and not damaged the clutch. Every off roader has low range gearing AND good clearance. So I recommend good clearance AND low range gearing. Auto or manual, doesn't matter.
Thanks Andrew, my next off-roader will have low range for a start but i didn't know if i shoud go for a auto or manual. i really appreciate the reply! @@4xoverland
Ok, ok... The new Troopy is great, but I can't wait to see you rip into the Bus 4x4 Hiace! 👍👍👍
Incredible Review. Thanks you for going into the pros and cons of automatic vs manual on different terrain. Learned a ton.
It breaks my heart that we cannot get those in North America. Spot On about the engineers, by the way. THANK YOU, also for mentioning the blind spot and quality. I am so frustrated with Toyota's insistence on staying with the unnecessarily large front 'nose' on their Pickup trucks and suv's here in N America. It's to the point of absurd, and don't understand why reviewers are not talking about it more. My hopes have been raised however with the new landrover, and I look forward to a test drive.
new Land Rover? None of their cars are suited to real adventure. Only Instagram adventure.
I think with a tune these things will be great. I hear a few guys are already pulling pretty decent numbers for them. I sold my v8 and ordered the four cylinder because I’m not towing, carrying a shit load of weight and I wanted an automatic. I just hated driving the v8 around town and therefore it spent more time in my garage.
I do agree with what you said about the sound when starting it up. I think an exhaust will be a good idea as well to give the 2.8 a better note.
I haven’t heard one decent sounding 4 cyl diesel aftermarket exhaust yet!
@@nowukkas2472 No chance with a DPF, I reckon.
Hi Andrew does your auto gearbox of the van have a oil cooler I was quite surprised to see my 5 door Jimny has a integrated oil cooler in the radiator for the auto gearbox of the Suzuki
Now at last I’ll get knowledge sharing on offroading with auto gearbox from the master 🙏
My Fortuner 2015 has the same vibration at 1500-1550 rpm - maybe the Prado engine with the extra balance shaft was to smooth this vibration??
I think I'm getting some Grenadier cold turkey vibes. Such a shame about the exhaust lump. Enjoy the new build, looking forward to the series.
Now i can’t unsee Master😂
CAT 6 indicators ready for most pre approved GVM upgrades and the mines , they are ugly as hell but compliant and don't require and cutting of the factory guard to fit them , less chance of panels corroding in the long run I reckon its a decent compromise.
I assume the engine bay might have an ample space to be used for accessories, just take advantage of the rise in the bonnet and install a bridge-like bracket for accessories.
Hi Andrew, are you sure that you cannot put the car sun visor on the new build. I am thinking of doing the same with my 76 new model. I thought the tech in the rooftop box was all facing down from sun visor height.
You don't need a canbus interface for driving lights. You can take the wire for a relay off the high beam still.
Thanks for the video Andrew.
Silly question... Does the Toyota hooter still go Meep Meep which makes the 105 sound like a mini hooting? 😂. It is the one thing I still have to change😊.
I think an auto is awesome to drive around town etc. However I still am one of those who have a concern with the auto (even though they are reliable) in the bush, at least a manual you can limp out of the bush and tow start of required etc... All the electronics eish...
Looking forward to seeing how the motor works with the weight added.
Cheers
Can’t wait for the Hiace
Hi Andrew, very sad indeed about the external sun visor mate, pity it wasn't possible to just fit one temperately to see if it interferes with that radar thingy. With rear wheel track, are you going try using different off set wheels to fix the wheel track issue or another diff upgrade. Great build coming up mate thanks. Seeya Rob
The radar “thingy” may or may not become important as you would be using it off-road and the frontal branches and bushes could possibly upset your driving experience with unnecessary alarms.
Should take your little dash pocket thing to a trimmer and get them to punch a hole out where the sensor sits
Drill a hole into the dashboard cover for the light sensor and put it back on top. I didn’t get any other serious problems feedback from this video.
It is a beautiful car....no doubt
The Japanese version which ive ordered has a small mirror on front left of bonnet to deal with blind spot.
I don’t get people not liking the big indicator, it’s a truck, not a show car and when driving around the bigger indicators helps other road users see your indicating, that’s a plus
Its ugly. The white GVM upgrade indicator required with the previous model was smart and looked cool. This one looks like it was drawn by a 5-year-old with a crayon.
I've heard that the new Bonnet is more flexible and can course harmonics at certain speeds.
I'm sure you'll have heaps of modifications and refinements to update us on😊😊
Can't wait for this build series, very anticipated 😊😁👍😉
Definitely more flexible without the scoop in the middle, but surprisingly it’s still heavy.
It's amazing spending shit loads off $$ on a new car then have to spend more money on its design faults and fix and improve the faults at your own cost , na no way Toyota get ya shit together please
I think the bonnet design is so it’s safer if a pedestrian is hit
@@StinkhoundRosie that's crap they didn't brace and weld it they stuffed up
@@davidmilledge221 so you’re saying Toyota stuffed up the same way on 3 different models, and shipped them anyway? Righto 👍
im more curious to see the hiace tbh - no doubt the troop carrier will turn out great, but the driving position might be heaps better for visibility.
if only i could have afforded the older
troopy. can’t wait for the new build. thanks for the video.
PS. Your lively wife, needs to create her own videos.
You were much more enthusiastic about the INEOS. Am I sensing buyer's remorse?
