I am leasing a horse and creating a relationship with him. I need to lunge him in order to establish my position with him. If I don't he might run from the mounting block because he doesn't want to work. When I lunge him he is compliant and sees me as the one in charge. So far, I feel like I have to lunge him every time to establish this relationship for safety and respect. Thank you for your videos!

My last gelding was out of Sir Donnerhall. They look very similar in terms of a big built chestnut :)

I lunge my horses. But I also know what you're talking about with the horses getting wound up! If I let him go crazy he does have a tendency to wind himself up so if that happens then I have to bring him back to earth! So I try to just give him a quick and quiet lunge-walk, trot and canter both directions with a few transitions. It's mostly to warm him up and get him focused on me. If he seems to need to run more I let him. But I definitely used to be the one with the horse running around doing what he wants but in the last few years I've changed that!

I’m a beginner and have both a calm 23 year old mare and a wild (ish) 3.5 year old TB. The TB needs to be lunged to burn some energy before be ridden. I currently rely on the barn to do that but would like to learn how to do it myself. Need a beginner lesson

Please make a video on lunging and also one with lunging over poles! Do you shorten the inside side rein 2 holes?

    hi! nice vid!
i was wondering if you'd suggest lunging over poles and raised poles as part of the "building a top line" in the young (4-5yo) horse. thank you!

Yes. That is definitely good. I usually do it while riding but this is good too!

Oh that’s a good idea! I’ll have to put it on the list :) I do go over lunging in my groundwork course.

Ive been told lunging is not good for horses at all, it makes them bend in unatural ways & can put their bodies out of alignment, how true this is I dont know, but my ottsb is undergoing Flinchlock release care body treatments on a regular basis & he is not allowed to lunge at all, also to mention he WONT lunge, he hates running in circles with a passion. Can you give more insight if this is true or not...

Thank you Amelia, I love everything you have said here. We are lunging my mare now, before we ride, and this will probably subside to just occasionally but we are working through some things currently. I use side reins and my trainer is helping me which is amazing but I only trailer to her twice a week so I ride and lunge at home without her. How do you get the horse to bend to the inside? And not the outside, even though the head is down they still bend to the outside, I see it with even upper level people lunging. I am trying some spiral in a little and push out while keep a hold of the line. Occasionally I get her to look inside instead of out but it takes a while. Does everyone struggle with this?

If you go back and work on drifting the hindquarters, that will help with the bending aid on the lungeline. Good luck!

How do you half halt your horse on the lunge?

Hi. 2 ways... The first is through body language. If you are behind the horse's shoulder, then you are driving them forward on the lunge. If you get a little in front of the horses shoulder, then you will slow them down. You also use the lunge line to half-halt and slow them down. Little bumps on the line along with using your voice commands. I also will bring the circle in smaller when I want them to slow down.
