    I have to say it again - this content is such a gift! Even though I am quite and experienced dressage rider, I am learning so much from you. I have a three year old, so this has given me some great direction and ways to improve my training.

    I love your attitude and sharing of so much useful content, Alicia. Thank you! I tried double-lunging my OTTB this morning for the first time and it was interesting. I'd been using a single lunge line with my horse kitted with a surcingle + reins + neck stretcher - he kept his head down but he wasn't taking contact (everything was loose). This 2-line system looks more useful. However, my horse (I'll call him "Mr Horse") didn't like the feel of the outer line on his backside and had a few eruptions (to the point that I released the outer line) and a few stand-stills and back-ups (when I tried to get him to move forward), initially. Eventually, he relaxed in to the lunge, with occasional breaks when I put too much pressure on with the lunge whip. Mr Horse is middle-aged (like me!) and has not been asked (by me, mostly) for consistent rein contact under saddle and I'm trying to get him to take the contact and (1) not raise his head when we move from rest to walk or walk to trot, and (2) not over bend his neck to avoid the bit/contact. I realize I should reframe this to say that I'd like him to keep his head down as he moves between gaits and accept the contact (and look for it), as it's more positive! This double line activity looks promising and I will keep trying it. I've watched this video a few times, learning more with each view. By the way, do you have a suggestion for how to address contact evasion by over-bending the head beyond the vertical? I'd love advice on this.

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jen, great question. Sounds like you are the right track with not using too much pressure with whip and taking time. It will take a some repetition of encouraging him to relax over the back, then if you want him to reach more forward to the bit instead of sitting behind the contact try using transitions between trot and canter as in the canter he will move more forward and also use some slight leg yielding to assist with suppleness. Let me know how you go with this ✨

    This is beautiful! Really helpful Alicia. This is a different set up to the way I've set up double-lunge, & I'm keen to try this. This series is great for identifying/understanding the tools to progress an unschooled horse. Being able to go back & analyse how you progressed to where you're at with Mogs now, is great. Yr progress with him at the 4 month mark, on yr 4 month videos- phenomenal! Maybe now you're at 6 months on, anyway great resources! Excellent tips. Training a couple of our horses & keen to keep applying your knowledge & tips. Keep it up, please. ❤🐴🐎🙏

    Do you have a tip for a horse that doesn‘t accept the lungeline at the hind legs? My mare is a bit spooky with the lunge touching her in the back…

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you 🤩 Best way it is take it slow with the double lunge and it might be that you need to stick to one lunge only if it upsets her too much. Also ensure you secure it as shown in the video so it does not slip down as that can also worry the horses. Good luck x

      @dreamingtani5411 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YourRidingSuccess thanks for answering :) I think she is just a bit upset because she doesn't know it yet. So slow and calm will probably do the trick :D Also I've seen people put the outside lunge over the horses back, do you have thoughts on that?

    • @nala8223
      @nala8223 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dreamingtani5411 Not sure if you still need an answer, but I'm here with one :) double lunging is good for multiple things, but when the second lunge line is over the back instead of behind the horse, it doesn't do as much. All it really does then is help steering, but you shouldn't really need that with lunging. And you can kind of use the lines as long reins then, so you could maybe get some more collection more easily. But the lunge line behind the horse, also helps the horse use his hindquarters right. I'm currently doing a lot of desensitisation with my Irish cob with the lunge line because she's also terrified of things touching her hindquarters because she cannot see it then

    • @dreamingtani5411
      @dreamingtani5411 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nala8223 thanks for your answer! I actually started with the line over her back (more like long reigning) just to get her comfortable with the outside line existing :D By now I can comfortably work her with the double lunge, it took her a while but slow and steady did the trick! Good luck with your cob! I'm sure you'll get her to accept it soon :)

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, with horses that are using their body in a hollow way across the back and head in the air, more often than this is because they are not supple in the body and struggling to relax over the back and connect into the bridle. Try starting with the lunging in the same way Alicia started with Mowgley and taking it slow until the horse understands what is asked of them. Hope this helps x

    Absolutely love these videos! There is a horse that I’ve been prepping for double lounging but the second you ask for a canter she gets anxious and slams on the breaks. In this case would you keep lounging with the one lounge line until she’s more comfortable?

    • @audreye7078
      @audreye7078 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check your cues and aids.. also, can she walk, trot, canter, change length on the lunge with or without sidereins without falling in or out? Your basics may need work..

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question, firstly ensure there is no reason for the horse to be stopping so make sure teeth are not sharp, horse is not sore in the body and then yes, go back to one lunge line and work on the canter until the horse is comfortable and relaxed with cantering. It might be that the horse is struggling with the pressure of two reins which make the horse more upright in the balance. Hope this helps ✨

    • @Emily-pf3ee
      @Emily-pf3ee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@YourRidingSuccess You can also use an old stirrup leather to connect them together underneath the belly/girth erea. If you put them tight enough to fit a hand in between its safe so no hoofs get caught when in a happy mood. I was thinking if he ever turns around to the outside you have a stirrup flying next to him when thats your new inside rein. No hate at all if this works for you it works ❤

    Hi Alecia,, I love this OTTB series. I have a 5 yr old since he was 3. I started out well w him. Than 6 months in the training he started rearing. My worst fear since my past TB reared on me in 2005 & fell on me, fractured my pelvic bone. I have restarted my current guy w your exercises. I am going to do the doubled lunging tomorrow. I will say in my current horse's issue's, he also got diagnosed with EPM in June and is on a 2nd does of treatment. I am working on the ground now and following your exercises. I hope for a full recovery but am also concerned that his behavior might be learned. He is lazy but also explosive. Any advice?

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kimberlee - firstly please be careful as the last thing you want is to get hurt again! With rearing it means the horse is very behind your leg, so it is essentially standing still but on two legs. Work on your horses suppleness which will allow his body to be more freely forward and ensure the horse is responsive to your aids and stays "in front of your leg" so when you ask the horse responds. Good luck and please be careful first and foremost. x

      I think done improperly double lunging could potentially cause an injury, but doesn't that go for almost anything you do with horses? If done correctly with the proper steps and preparation, I think that double lunging is a valuable tool that in the end helps the horse and rider be much safer under saddle.
