We booked it via our hostel in Hanoi which was city backpackers, but you can book it with any hostel really, It’s super easy! A lot of people we’ve met did it with Jasmine hostel or Buffalo hostel too. Just fish around for the best prices!
I did the loop a few weeks with a 125cc Honda (semi-automatic) in two people and it was doable, not many problems. You just kind of struggle climbing up steep roads. You need to use the first gear on several occasions. From Cao Bang to Ha Giang should be 6.30 h., a long one. I would recommend a 150cc (manual) for more comfort and stability.
Hi lovely. We’re currently in Ha Giang looking to do the same thing (drive the loop ourselves) a lot of rental companies that we’ve tried are requesting an IDP. Did the tour company you done this with request for this document?
They did, although we somehow got away with just saying we had one and didn’t have it with us at the time 🙈 I think it’s protocol for them to ask, but normally they don’t actually care 😩 we don’t actually have one at home for motorbikes so thank god they didn’t ask anything more once we said that!
If you get pulled over without the IDP the Police may impound your Bike. IDP is not hard to get there is no test. My wife and I did the Loop in March 2023. It was quite cold. Take some gloves both for protection in a fall and warmth. We rented a Honda xr150 and just went by ourselves without a tour. We got or felt lost a few times. It was a wonderful experience. I think for younger people a tour and prebooked accommodation is the safer option. Your guides have local info. We were in our mid 50s at the time don't leave it until you are old. :)

there is so much more to see, u can spend 2-3 months just going only the northwest Vietnam beside Ha Giang :D
