  • Watch the landing in Frankfurt: • Lufthansa Flight LH 48...
    Amazing views of San Jose and Silicon Valley from seat 12K aboard this Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 operating Lufthansa Flight LH 489 from San Jose Norman Y. Mineta International Airport (SJC/KSJC) to Frankfurt am Main International Airport (FRA/EDDF). Listen to the engines spool up and watch as we slowly climb and do a loop after takeoff, providing some great views of SJC itself as well as the rest of San Jose. This flight is operated by Lufthansa Cityline, and as such all of the A340s which operate LH 488/489 are in the Star Alliance livery, but the service and onboard product in economy remains much the same. If you look closely at 1:40, you can see the the other European visitor at SJC, British Airways Boeing 787-9 G-ZBKA, waiting to depart to London Heathrow as British Airways flight BA 278.

    Nice!!! I sometimes see this magnificent bird fly over my duplex when the winds are southerly. Always a treat! You dont see these quads very often (if at all) in the states. Thank you for sharing....

      Thanks! I love flying on the A340 and take every chance I can to do so. Unfortunately it's only a matter of time before they disappear so we'll have to enjoy the sight of them while we can.

      Did this flight (LH488-LH489) in D-AIGV and it was a pretty good experience flying long haul. Looking forward to my next US-Trip

      Their isn’t enough demand to operate from two Bay Area airports! They made the right decision sticking to sfo!

    As I watch this I can see the Target store I always went to in college, I can see my college campus, and the apartments where I lived. I'd make time to see Lufthansa fly out every day it's in SJC while living there.

    Great Video. How full was the flight?

    • @CobaltPhotography
      @CobaltPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! The flight was quite empty. The forward economy cabin was rather full, but the aft economy cabin was very empty, with many people sleeping across the rows of 4 seats in the middle (economy configuration on this A340 is 2-4-2). This was somewhat expected as I had heard that the route had been experiencing very light load factors, particularly in economy.

      That's a pity, but thanks for the information. Do you know anything about the load factor in PE and C?

    • @CobaltPhotography
      @CobaltPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PE was about half full I believe, because I briefly considered booking it originally. Upgrades were available right after booking for $335, and at the airport for the same price (for Y to PE). But it is a small section because these are the economy-heavy A343 that Cityline operates on behalf of LH. As for C, I think the load was quite light for that as they even advertised a Y to C upgrade for I believe about $1,100 at the counter at SJC (and I believe about $700 for PE to C); I asked and they had a pre-printed piece of paper with these prices specifically for this flight.
      Either way, the loads are very light on this flight. If you want to book anything other than Y, it's much cheaper to just book Y and then immediately after it tickets go to your new booking online to pay cash to upgrade to PE, or if you want C, upgrade at the counter on checkin instead of booking the higher class in your original booking. Hope this helps!

    Was the flight shakie at all? Any turbulence during the flight?
    Flying in couple week to Frankfurt choosing between sjc and sfo
    Thanks

      @CobaltPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's like how it was when I flew it, then no, there wasn't any real noticeable turbulence. It was a quite smooth flight. But if there's turbulence, flying out of SFO or SJC isn't going to make a difference in whether or not you experience it; the flight tracks will be almost identical. Out of SJC you get the A340-300, whereas out of SFO you get the A380 though.

    Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing. But how strange to see your Frankfurt-bound flight do a 180 immediately after departure from San Jose and head due south. Perhaps the captain was trying to circumvent a nasty weather system. At what point did you finally turn northeast?

    • @cph98108
      @cph98108 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually, they do what's called the "Loupe Four" departure out of SJC. What that means is that, for most east and northbound flights, when departing from runway 30R or 30L, the aircraft will do a loop around SJC, climbing to around 12,000 feet, before then turning back to course. This is to avoid conflicts with arriving traffic into Oakland or San Francisco. Westbound departures (Hawaii, Japan, etc.) usually just head straight out over the Pacific, and southbound departures simply do the normal 180°.

    • @CobaltPhotography

      This is a much better and more detailed explanation than I could have given, thanks!

    • @CobaltPhotography
      @CobaltPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cph98108 describes it best in the above reply, but if you also look at the flightaware tracks for LH 489 you can see that it's the typical routing for this flight. The weather that day was actually quite nice as it had rained heavily the day before and most of the system had cleared out by the time I took to the skies.

      @mjoven1975 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CobaltPhotography That is correct. That takeoff pattern is used to avoid arriving traffic descending into OAK and SFO

    • @donaldkoelper5807
      @donaldkoelper5807 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you to you both. Avoiding incoming SFO/OAK traffic makes perfect sense. I've never departed SJC to an eastern destination, only to Portland, Seattle, Burbank and Honolulu.
