  • It may not look drastically different, but the Jeep Wrangler is all-new for 2018. We head out to Arizona to take our first test drive.

    You can't mistake John Davis's voice! He's been going on strong on Motor Week for over thirty five years! Love his voice! Wonderful to watch and very informative at the same time! That's why I love watching the retro reviews to learn about cars I forgot about or never even heard of as if they were new! Keep up the good work and keep pluggin' away John!

    I’m a CJ7 snob, bought my Renegade new back in 1986 for $11,800. I’ve had my JL Unlimited with 3.6 liter for a year now and I love it. It’s apples and oranges. Yeah the CJ7 was much more tough off-road but I’m an old dude and probably not going to do much off roading.

    How expensive they've gotten over the years

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, it's ridiculous how expensive vehicles have gotten over the years... It's not that difficult to configure a pickup at $50K and that is not even with *every* option possible added to it.

    • @xray111xxx
      @xray111xxx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it comes with the territory. Everyone wants everything and that is going to cost. True vehicles have gotten expensive, but so has everything else. It is relevant price wise today. Its' value depends on your expectations. While I still love the original Cherokee the best. The Wrangler isn't out of line with the other expensive cars today. Also we are in different times with emissions, safety, and more. Things through time will only get more expensive, so even though I am not thrilled about that, it is the way of time, and inflation. Different things inflate more or less than others.

      I was thinking the same thing. It seems that the new ownership of the Chrysler Jeep dodge family has forgotten that the core message of the Jeep line up was an economical 4x4 that had little to no frills and was intended to be darn near bomb proof. Ask any good and honest mechanic and they’ll tell you these new JL keeps are even more expensive to maintain than before. Jeep needs to go back to its roots and strip the next generation of wranglers and make it truly rugged, reliable, and economical, like they used to be,

    • @steveespinola7652

    Let’s remember the 3.6 is a great engine. It’s in literally everything from FCA and has proven itself not to mention 7/10 sold are 4 door not 2 door and more are sold with options than without so that’s how Jeep will keep making them they have to make them the way people are buying them. They aren’t gonna make a off road Manuel two door bare bones diesel because they wouldn’t make any money... I think that’s understandable

  • @goldenretriever6440
    @goldenretriever6440 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The strange thing is I’ve seen plenty of new 4 door wranglers but absolutely no 2 doors
    Even at the auto show they wouldn’t let people sit in the 2 door but they did let us sit in the 4 door
    What’s going on

    I don’t think folks that bag on it hate it. It’s much more the well warranted concern for the Chrysler power trains. The old amc in-line 6 was fantastic. Almost as reliable as a Toyota. The 3.8 and 3.6 haven’t come close to that reliability that you would have gotten in a tj. I think the jl interior looks really fiat-like but styling is always subjective. I think most people like it.

    • @kolourblind3124
      @kolourblind3124 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those old 4.0 straight 6’s were great! I for one would like to see a modern version of it that doesn’t require a quart of oil every time you fill up the gas tank lol

    • @ThoughtMachine1
      @ThoughtMachine1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What's this unreliability supposed to be based on, because reality isn't it. The 3.6 and German sourced 5-speed auto in the JK are bulletproof (except for the early glitch in machining the head, which FCA stepped up and took responsibility for). The ZF 8-Speed paired to the same engine in the JL is an industry standard, and again, bulletproof. It's really time for the haters to update their opinions.

    • @kolourblind3124
      @kolourblind3124 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gmail PowerUser is it just haters or is there something to it? I ask because I don’t really know what kind of reliable milage you can expect to see from a 3.8? Or 3.6? 200k 300k? I can speak for the 4.0 but I haven’t had to live with either of the new v6s...I do know the trans are solid however

      i found the best way to see how a vehicle does no matter the brand i talk to those that drive it questions i ask ---how do you like it what problem have you had and the most important one is would you recommend the vehicle most of the time i would say 2 out of 40 are negative.... the old amc inside use to be metal if people want luxury then get a dam bmw or caddy and shut the hell up it is a jeep or truck whatever the subject is about not a damn fancy car ...it is why they say jeeps are not for everyone

    • @dmwil1
      @dmwil1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 4.0s that I've seen suffer from all kinds of problems, including major league oil leaks. The 3.6 is much more dependable and reliable than the 4.0, especially if you take out the 2012 model year troubles. The 3.6 has more power all the way through the powerband and is much lighter.

    Wish they'd make a more affordable barebones model without all the luxury stuff on the interior. Most people are just gonna gut that crap and install what they want anyway.

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The base Sport model is more of what I want, but with the LSD, hard top, and air-conditioning. I actually *want* the steel wheels and manually operated windows, so I would not go with the Sport S model. Now, if I could just get a few hundred more knocked off by not including the rear seats since I'm going to remove them as soon as I get it anyway.

    • @overlord2kx
      @overlord2kx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      they do make a more affordable barebones model. The Sport trim has crank windows and manual locks. That's about as bare bones as it gets in 2018.

    • @overlord2kx
      @overlord2kx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      grumpy oldman, you can get the base sport model (not the S) with the LSD (Dana 44) option for $595 and it includes A/C, with crank windows and steel wheels. You're on your own for the rear seat delete though.

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wootloopsftw
      The base "Sport" model does not come with air-conditioning. The "Sport S" model does. To get the "Sport" model configured how I want it results in an MSRP of $31,925. The same configuration in the "Sport S" model ends up being $33,830, so another $1,905 for stuff that I don't need nor want. Of course, I'm not paying MSRP... :)
      I ordered it on Friday and it might arrive in 8-10 weeks. It was $29,622 + TT&L. That should be about 5% below dealer invoice.

    Love the JL but for off-roading some things are still not ideal. Lights in the fenders always get smashed and the removable bumper end caps, while a great off road feature, will only make that all the more likely and I'm sure they aren't cheap to replace. Door handles that stick out instead of being flush, already had to have my JK door fixed because of that. Trees will push them right into the door. While the new permanent frame sticking up is great for roll-over protection it'll suck if that gets damaged. That'll likely make for a lousy ride home if you can't put your windshield back up or the top back on plus a huge repair.

    • @ibjeepr
      @ibjeepr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what your point is. Are you saying Jeeps for for getting damaged and being designed in a way to make sure that damage is as expensive as possible to be fixed? My point was Jeeps are to be off-roaded and some of these design features are not ideal for off-roading. What's your point?

      Acca Larentia No reason for a V8... The 3.6 out performs the last factory V8 powered Jeep by nearly 200 horsepower... And some 30 more horsepower than the L31 5.7 L (350) small block... And gives better fuel economy than both.
      ...plus, C.A.F.E. and crash test standards would regulate the Jeep into an even more glorified station wagon. Hope Jeep never opts for a V8... Because you'd kiss most of the "Jeep" characteristics like solid axles, removable tops/doors, good-bye!

    The power train isn't the best. That 3.6 is under power for the Unlimited and the 8 speed works good till your stuck in mud or snow. The body lines look realy good just does tail light sticking out look wrong on it and they put the rear wiper at the bottom of the window that is a realy bad idea. Aerodynamic are a welcome change.The interior looks nice but way to much useless electronic that's the part i don't like. Making a Grand Cherokee out of it isn't appealing to the Jeep people. Is it going to have sales for sure all the soccer moms and yuppies that want to go mall crawling are going to want one. Lets face it Jeep guys keep there jeep for long periods of time because of all The mods they do to them. Hell i still have my TJ even if i got an unlimited Rubicon. Only time will tell if all that electronic will hold up. By the way some of the new JL owner are already having electronic problems so if you thinking about changing your JK you may want to wait a couple of years
