A really good movie for a rainy Saturday afternoon - thank you so much and for this wonderful channel , so many good movies to watch . Am very grateful 🌺
Thank you for your lovely comment, I'm glad it helped dry the rain. The older movies are like that, you can really sink into them. I have a nice one I'll present tonight that you might like... I appreciate you taking the time to comment, enjoy your Sunday 🌃
There is much to talk about and enthuse over in this picture. The premise at the beginning seems contrived and far-fetched when the desperate and determined Mrs Phyllis Carter (Betsy Palmer) puts forth her proposal to lieutenant Jim Hagan (Barry Atwater). This seems to be the case, until we are remined that this film is based on a true story (which the framing device in the introduction reminds us of). The highlight for me is how the beautiful and talented Betty Palmer undergoes an amazing transformation over a short period of time. This of course refers to the ease with which she is able to, seamlessly, slip in and out of diametrically opposed roles; from loving wife and devoted mother to streetwise gangster’s moll with a prison record. The film speaks, ultimately, to the element of personal sacrifice in the pursuit of redressing injustice and defeating the ugliness of social ills that are a menace to families. It would most certainly raise eyebrows among modern audiences with lines like, “it’s no job for a woman”. The tension, especially towards the latter part of the film, is palpable. The viewer knows the outcome but is anxious to learn exactly how the resolution is achieved as the minutes tick away. This is a testament to clever screenwriting and careful directing. Palmer is brilliant in exuding raw emotion at the most crucial moments. Look out too for the seemingly eternal problems that confront bureaucratic powers (“we don’t have enough money … manpower”) and the resultant conflict with the families of victims. A particularly poignant moment revolves around the portrayal of Kim Spalding as Ralph Carter and the predicament he finds himself in. His pain as the suffering husband is also palpable. As an aside worth noting, the film is a wonderful expose of how gangsters seduce their molls with love and care, and then gradually transform into ruthless abusers. Do not miss this. Suspense and entertainment is guaranteed. Thank you, Isabella.
Thank you, Charlie, I'm happy that you always find so much value in these films. You're quite right, if there wasn't an explainer at the beginning, this film would not be believable, especially coming out of Hollywood. Whilst I'm sure it has been glamourized in various ways, the basic facts do appear to be true and correct, so it's quite interesting historically. Betty Palmer was excellent in the leading role, and it made quite a change to see Jack Lord playing a criminal. I love the sequences set at Stan's Drive-In, it photographs so beautifully at night. All-in-all, a remarkable story and review, thank you.
I know this is based on a true story but it's still outrageous! A housewife going undercover...no training, no knowledge of drugs or the people who traffic...and her husband being okay with it. Wild. But a good film, well written, directed and acted. Betsy Palmer was gorgeous. I only wish she'd made more movies. Thank you for this, and all the work you put in. These days we need an escape from this toxic atmosphere, and the older, black n white films are like a spice of heaven. 🌹🥰💯👍🏽🔥🌹 America's war was finally won, and America lost. Our streets are flooded with guns and drugs, and tptb who profit off our misery are just watching us destroy ourselves and each other...a trap was set, and our young people fall into it, every day another life claimed.
Thanks, it is a good film, I particularly like the locations, Stan's Drive-In, 4480 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California for example. I suspect Hollywood might not be telling us the whole truth of this story 🙃😎🤠 I'm glad you enjoyed it. and thank you for taking the time to comment. I agree, Black & White makes an enjoyable change, with Black & White you can fall into the story, rather than the movie shouting at you. I've been toying with the idea of posting some silent films, with those you really have to concentrate, and the world falls away...🌃🌃🌃
What are Steve McGarett & Captain Steubing doing committing crimes? Didn't the state of Hawaii & Princess Cruises check their backgrounds? 😂 Now Chuckie I can understand!
Gavin McLoud guest-starred in two Five-O episodes as “Big Chicken.” 😊 -BTW, Jack was under deep cover in this movie…secret mission for the Governor of Hawaii. 😁 Aloha from Maui 🤙✌️
I'm impressed you found him in this, you're more observant than me, he's not even credited! It must be all those fancy costumes making them look older 🤠
@@isabellamars : ) I came by looking especially for Than Wyenn, I am under impression of his emotional acting in Zorro and along with list in imdb I'm searching for more of his work, difficult to come across anything, so I'm grateful you shared this one, even though this bit is quite drastic
@@hannahsdrawings8664 I understand, that's a nice story, and I'm happy you found it and enjoyed it. I added Than Wyenn to the cast list in the description now, to honour your appreciation of him :) I have a few other films he is in, they are older, so likely he has very small parts, but it's still interesting to see. I'll post another one with him in soon, maybe next weekend, it's always good to get feedback from viewers, thank you 📽
@@hannahsdrawings8664 Yes, it's interesting when you get interested in a particular actor and realise how long a career they had, and how many different films and TV shows they were in. I think there's a lot to find in these older films, whether someone's interested in history, fashion, morals, mechanisations, actors, music, or who did the catering! I have a film I will put later this evening with Than Wyenn, another early one, maybe you've already seen it. maybe not, hopefully, people will enjoy it 🍿📽👀
I was four years old when this movie was made in 1958. I am 70 now. Betsy Palmer would have to be at least 90 by today (discovered she was born in 1926). Update: found out she died around 2015, if I remember correctly she was 32 when she made this movie.
34:46 its Moriarity, the mechanical genius. What's he doing getting mixed up in that mess ? Did he blow his entire share of Gold from the Bank Heist ???
Thanks, I removed that line. I did not realise they had so many problems, they were AI-generated, so that line must be a weird hallucination! I see there are quite a few issues with the subtitles, so I'll make an improved version tomorrow.

Another great film I’ve never seen. Really appreciate you adding good films here that entertain us better than TV.

Better than TV, I'm humbled. Thank you, I'm happy you've been enjoying them, perfecto!
Excellent movie. Jack Lord played a great heavy.
Thank you.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it, it made a refreshing change to see him playing the bad guy.
Very enjoyable movie. Jack Lord never knew that one day he would become famous for the line; "Book him Dano". Betsy Palmer was superb as well.
Yes, it's interesting to track the careers of actors, they turn up in all sorts before they achieve the one they'll be remembered for.

I like how Steve McGarrett was a drug dealer before getting clean and becoming a cop.
Good movie! Thanks for the upload!

Barry Atwater and Jack Lord were friends in real life. BA guest starred in a 2 part episode of Hawaii 5-0 in the early 70s with JL.

I see your point, maybe HollywoodLand isn't always telling us the truth, or Mr McGarett's past informed his future. It's all rather discombobulating 🙃

There are some actors older than that, Terry Moore just starred in Silent Life: The Story of the Lady in Black, she was born in 1929.
