This IS a 1954 film, released in the UK early in 1955 on the Gaumont circuit as a second feature to 'Six Bridges to Cross'. Its UK release title was BEFORE I WAKE. This is a retitled American print.
@@cardona89 I suspect this was because the film was copyrighted under its new title when shown in the USA in 1956. It is possible it hadn't originally been copyrighted at all. Very few British films bear any copyright date.
I grew up with this type of thriller, Saturday afternoon television. Not too taxing, but fun. There is another film with Maxwell Reed on youtube called The Notorious Landlady. Also very entertaining.
Another "hidden" gem. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie and couldn't wait to see how April would trip up the nurse from hell although I thought it possible she might be a goner. Thought the doctor might be in cahoots with the old battle axe too but glad I was wrong.

Mona Freeman actually was very well known, she was obviously American, worked in films and TV mostly in the 50s. She frequently played much younger characters. Jean Kent was a versatile & popular actress who in the early 50s was listed in the top 10 British box office stars for several years, she later did tv. These 2 women were only 5 years apart in age. Kent: 1921-2013 Freeman: 1926-2014 These women were not 'unknowns', after 50 years though only film buffs probably recognize them. Both lived long productive lives. "I thought it was nice of the girl to give her stepmother a ride home just after she tried to kill her..." Oh, I would have given her a ride home.... The ride of a life - er, death. No seatbelts, and the passengers were more likely to be ejected from the car - and killed. 😅
@@gygye Yes, I noticed the difference between the heights of Maxwell and Mona. So, if he was 6 feet 3 inches tall (only one inch taller than me), then Mona must have been really short, about 5 feet and not much more.
I noticed that Maxwell was very heavily suntanned out of continuity but, hey. it was mid-fifties...they didn't worry too much about such things. Also, what did Florence cry out right at the end when April appeared after she thought she was dead?
This was really good and April right from the start she knew, and Florence kept a good act right up to the very end. Thank you for this movie, i enjoyed it
Ahh, the old hollow car door sound.... wonder if those were horsehair seats. Thanks for posting! I grew up doing BOMB DRILLS, hiding under our school desks on the west coast. & all this came back from the sound of Grandpas' car door... what a long strange trip it's been.
Despite being able to guess the entire premise, these old calm films are fun to watch. I think some tweaking of the script might have pushed this further. Thanks for posting it.
Whenever there Is money& power involved with people, one can be assured there may very well be," corruption," involved. This movie is representative of that!
Good movie for a casual watch... I wish they played with the uncertainty of the viewer more instead of making it obvious who the villain was pretty much from the beginning. I agree with what others said, even if you see it coming, you still wanna see it ;)
Mona Freeman was quite an accomplished Artist. Her most famous painting is that of a person familiar to us all.......Mrs. See which is now on all boxes of See's Candy boxes. She once dated Bing Crosby and eventually died at her Beverly Hills home. She always looked younger than her actual age and it caused some casting problems in her film work as she looked so young. She is quite attractive in this suspenseful film.
Hey y'all!! I really enjoyed this movie. Yes you're right, those who brought up valid critiques, for sure. But some of us are more interested in observing human behavior & differences. Anyway I loved how daughter kept plowing thru evidence & clues with her so-called "woman's intuition" & detective skills. I hated how pure dee evIL step mom kept manipulating the stupid ones with her considerable cunning skills. The ending was such a relief & joyous conclusion. Unsure if Florence was truly narcissistic as some commentators say or a greedy opportunist. Doesn't change fact she definitely operated from a Reptilian brain, a fallen one, if you will. The ending was great relief! Finally something good & true & humane happens & we breathe & live again this world of woes. Yes I recommend movie for those who truly like to sink themselves into the story.
Well, what kind of case can they bring against her? I think her wheels fell off and lawyers will get her a short stay in some sort of institution and then iT's back on the streets wreaking mayhem. Maybe she'll get into politics.
Thugs exist to some percentage in every category of society. The poor the middle class. Politicians. Corporations. Same is true with narcissists. Some percentage are thugs and have chosen the thug lifestyle, premeditation to step on the throats of other human beings as a way of life but some narcissists believe in morality and have not chosen the thug lifestyle and their behavior that seems improper is not premeditated. Actually to some extent their behavior is proper considering their high levels of mistrust. They are simply mentally and emotionally damaged by abuse and find it difficult to function in society without stress levels paralyzing them due to mistrust. In other words it's not a lack of morality it's an extreme lack of trust in other human beings that causes their narcissistic behavior which is not quite the same thing as deliberately choosing the thug lifestyle, stepping on the throats of other human beings. Although it may seem that a narcissist is stepping on the throats of other human beings what they are really doing is begging you to prove your love to them so that they can relax and trust you. Even to the point where they cannot breathe and are desperate to see signs of Love around them to heal their brokenness. It is a test. Not quite the same as a complete lack of morality.
@Henry Coy , I know, every older film you watch has so many demeaning comments on today’s cinema. There are great movies and actors past AND present. Enjoy when you catch a good one, no matter the year they were made.
A lot of fun! Jean Kent is channeling the cold steeliness of Judith Anderson in "Rebecca," similar to Barbara Stanwyck's ice-cold nurse in "Double Indemnity."

Kids have the art of this down pat.
Us grown ups need to remind ourselves now and then.
@@annbrown3037 Luv you Ann, but I have no idea what you mean by "Suspension of disbelief"? Are you an author?
@@annbrown3037 If suspension of disbelief is part of the pleasure of storytelling then no watcher/listener is required.

I hate it when my brakes go out as I’m navigating a treacherous road. Having to bail out then run a half mile in 30 seconds to catch up with the wayward car. Dang.
😂😂😂😂I know right! Did u see the static way the car stopped?? Funny
Too funny!
"...oh get in!"😂
Maan, I'd left her skanky murderess ass to walk
Why, the is a bi-weekly event for grocery shopping trips. It's not just you.
But ya gotta love it when a movie is so bad it's funny.
This IS a 1954 film, released in the UK early in 1955 on the Gaumont circuit as a second feature to 'Six Bridges to Cross'. Its UK release title was BEFORE I WAKE. This is a retitled American print.
MCMLVI: 1956. ??!!
@@cardona89 I suspect this was because the film was copyrighted under its new title when shown in the USA in 1956. It is possible it hadn't originally been copyrighted at all. Very few British films bear any copyright date.
@@garydavis2688 It makes sense. Thank you!
Yeah, that was the last words that she said before becoming unconscious from the medicine that the stepmother gave her. Nice little murder mystery.
@@cardona89 I noticed that, too!
I love these old movies. So much better than the new stuff.
It was so frustrating to watch all her "friends" not believe her or take her seriously! Who needs enemies if you friends like these! Sheesh!
@Andrea Lauren seriously! It was giving me anxiety how everyone so easily believed her stepmother over her.
Yes. If shy was killed, it's all over. I wanted the young dull doctor to notice the fact before the disguised accident.
But it’s very true to life. When you tell the truth about the stepmother no one can believe the behavior so they deny what you tell them.
@@christinahighsmith4453 Very true to life. No one wants to believe that such evil exists so they deny it.
@@lifespanwellnessbeauty-60i64 so scary. Makes me wonder how many times situations like this occurred in real life.

I grew up with this type of thriller, Saturday afternoon television. Not too taxing, but fun. There is another film with Maxwell Reed on youtube called The Notorious Landlady. Also very entertaining.
The Notorious Landlady is particularly amusing, especially for Gilbert and Sullivan fans. Two train tickets for Penzance, anyone?
i couldn't. my parents controlled the tv. it was outside for us...that was ok,tho.
Thank You so much for posting such a wonderful movie~I absolutely Love Black and white movies~You have a great channel ! 💕🌻
A truly wicked stepmother - excellent!!
a wonderful movie .Thank you for sharing .
Another "hidden" gem. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie and couldn't wait to see how April would trip up the nurse from hell although I thought it possible she might be a goner. Thought the doctor might be in cahoots with the old battle axe too but glad I was wrong.
Ah, the creaking door and the scraping sides of a drawer sliding open...waiting for the shrill scream in the dark, cold night...
Thank you for uploading these classic black and white films, such a treasure 👥
Loved the movie, thank you so much!!
I love this film. My favorite part, in her father's boat. The house was changed but his boat was untouched. She became relaxed, for the first time.
Then he pops out like a stalker. 😔😂
Never think switching drinks will work? Have you watched the Princess Bride?
This was so suspenseful and so great that the actors were unknown and played their parts so convincingly.
A well written suspense thriller.
Kent: 1921-2013
Freeman: 1926-2014
These women were not 'unknowns', after 50 years though only film buffs probably recognize them.
Both lived long productive lives.

I loved this old Movie! It just hit the spot on a rainy Saturday Afternoon!
This movie will be fabulous !! Mona Freeman and Jean Kent will be wonderful in their respective roles, I must add, I've never seen Jean Kent in such a severe role, she always played such glamorous character's !! A very exciting change of pace. Thank you so much for downloading this for us !! 😁😁😃😃😄😄😀😀
Uploading. The internet is up, your computer is down.
She's very credible in her role.
Very enjoyable.... thanks for uploading!!!
Loved the movie!!!! It was kinda predictable, but I watch quite a few who-done-it’s. They don’t make them like this anymore. Good movie. I would recommend it for almost everyone, probably not young kids. Four stars!
Thanks so much for posting this. Dr. Michael looks like he's 7 ft tall. It had quite a bit of suspense there... I thought it was nice of the girl to give her stepmother a ride home just after she tried to kill her. We should all be so forgiving! But great fun all round. Thanks again
Carol Dixon, I checked in Wikipedia and Dr Michael( Maxwell Reed) heights was 6, 3 feet. Yes, he was tall. lol but not 7 feet.
"I thought it was nice of the girl to give her stepmother a ride home just after she tried to kill her..."
Oh, I would have given her a ride home....
THANK YOU!!! I truly enjoyed watching this film!!!
ADORABLE Mona Freeman💗!!!
great film, very much enjoyed. thank you.
I was pleasantly surprised! Good story, good movie.
That was excellent. I now look forward to the algorithm recommending me lots of similar film noir.
This was really good and April right from the start she knew, and Florence kept a good act right up to the very end. Thank you for this movie, i enjoyed it
I liked this one... This is the second time I watched it liked it even better the second time! What a wicked step monster!
Most likely inspired by "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", lol!
A good movie with decent actors! Thanks for the upload!
Ahh, the old hollow car door sound.... wonder if those were horsehair seats. Thanks for posting! Glad I was born in 60.. saw the older cars, 50, 40s and a lot of farmers had 30s trucks because they were mechanics... & then there were the 60s and 70s with the big block... saw tvs early on GO COLOR! Know the difference between movies with class and the elementary drivel of today. Saw man walk on the moon(or did I, lol?) Old enough to want to ditch that crazy expensive cell phone and tell people to call the landline and leave a message! Orwells' 1984 was a PROPHECY. I grew up doing BOMB DRILLS, hiding under our school desks on the west coast. & all this came back from the sound of Grandpas' car door... what a long strange trip it's been.
No kidding, but 1960! You're a spring chicken.. which makes me a stewing hen. lol 😄
You could work on old cars, they where simple designs. Not now, its complicated computers.
Despite being able to guess the entire premise, these old calm films are fun to watch. I think some tweaking of the script might have pushed this further. Thanks for posting it.
WoWwww what a Gem!!!! Loved this movie!:) thank you
IMDb has got the year down as (1955) for this film. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to watching this later tonight.

Whenever there Is money& power involved with people, one can be assured there may very well be," corruption," involved. This movie is representative of that!
I think you were searching for the word "illustrative".
.
@@andrewfrankovic6821 A true Lilith! :-)
They can't make movies like this anymore, because nobody can act
nowadays.
@Henry Coy , I know, every older film you watch has so many demeaning comments on today’s cinema. There are great movies and actors past AND present. Enjoy when you catch a good one, no matter the year they were made.
I didn’t think this movie nor the acting was all that great.
Very true
No one can write the scripts either. So all that is left is sex and special effects.
That’s just nonsense that nobody can act nowadays. Get out of your sad cave

I love this movie and the ending. Wow.
Wow! Kept me on the edge of my seat. Great movie.
A lot of fun! Jean Kent is channeling the cold steeliness of Judith Anderson in "Rebecca," similar to Barbara Stanwyck's ice-cold nurse in "Double Indemnity."
