Volkswagen Multivan T7 eHybrid - Family Van (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Volkswagen Multivan T7 is made on the MQB platform - the same that underpins VW models from the Polo, to the Passat. One of the selling points is of course greater comfort, but more importantly VW engineers were able to install all the modern safety and assistance tech, as well as some new drivetrains.
    The VW Transporter happened by accident just after the Second World War, when a Dutch businessman visiting the Wolfsburg factory stumbled upon a make-shift transport vehicle based on the Beetle. Since 1950 we saw 6 generations of the Transporter, mainly utility vehicles, with some passenger and recreational variants as well.
    This changes with the introduction of the T7 Multivan. Until 2023 or 2024 the T6 will remain the working man’s option with the exception of the T6.1 Multivan with a 204 hp diesel and 4MOTION AWD. The T7 Transporter is expected in about 2 years.

    Volkswagen is on the right track with electrification, this van as eHybrid (why e?) is an interesting option for those that do plenty of short distances and need a van, but also, on occasion, might want to go long distance, for camping or whatever. I like the flexibility it offers!

    Have been looking into this one and will probably take the plunge as otherwise it's hard to fit 3 kids (isofix) and 2 large dogs. I agree with mostly using it as a short distance driver and have struggled to find anything in the PHEV catalogue of others that has this amount of space. Is this the revival of the minivan? it looks like a solid replacement of the Sharan and other spacious models that have gone away. Thanks for review!

    This is really a huge step up from previous Multivans in design and I want one quite badly, except 1) I'm sure VW Centre Singapore won't bring it in and 2) our infamous COE car-ownership certificate is now at its highest price ever. But I wonder if 20-30 years from now it'll be as collectible and as iconic as the Kombi is.

      No, the rear windows don't open. I'm not sure, but there may be an optional small sliding window within the larger glass, like you get on the California. If it's not on the options list today, it could be added in the future. For now they aren't sure how to make the new California, because this car is already heavy enough without the extra weight from the roof bed and cabinets.

    Thanks for a very informative review on a car that is interesting (at least to me), for a very particular reason. Ever since I saw the ID Buzz, I decided that it was the car/van for me. As I don't see it coming to this neck in the woods for a solid +24 months, maybe, the Multivan E Hybrid would be a solid stop gap vehicle!

    I was 2x times in Poland during October 2022 with hybrid car, but there was problems with re-charging... charging stations are often outside highways, and even if I find one on the highway, it often doesn't work, or I need to register with another provider, which takes longer than refueling.
    Poland is a big country, so I also need a longer rest (often associated with eating) when I drive, so I would like to use 30 minutes to charge the vehicle :)

    Interesting van. I do like the swappable slidy system. We mostly camp in our van, but it's nice to be able to take the bed out and use it as a van which we do quite often for moving timber or bikes. This would be a slicker system (although I wonder how much the rails fill up with crap...)
    We just about never do short trips (we have bicycles for that). So I really want a long-range EV, but they are in extremely short supply (Buzz cargo one day, maybe, at great expense). A hybrid would be nice, but this battery is uselessly small for our sort of usage (except for getting into/through cities that don't allow diesels any more). A Rex like the i3 - i.e a decent sized battery with the smallest possible engine for occasional use, makes more sense, but nobody makes such a thing.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rails are going to fill with sand. I recall this was an issue in the T6, and the V Class (one of them had some sort of brushes within the rails to improve the sliding action). Basically you want to vacuum these rails properly once a week.

    • @xxwookey
      @xxwookey ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarekDrivesENG One a week! Our van gets vacuumed twice a year if it's lucky. Also unless that floor is already insulated you cant insulate the floor and keep the rail system, unless it can be removed and reinstalled on top of 20-25mm of insulation. And that's going to be tricky because it's load-bearing so will be bolted down quite well (adding lots of thermal bridges).

    Great video. To avoid the second row seats from not turning arround... Just buy extra seats for the 3rd row and use them as second with self mounted belts. Wouldn't this work? I would also buy a second middle tray to not share mine as a driver with the rear passengers.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose you could buy these as extras, but not instead of regular 2nd row seats. I recall asking about a second table, and it would also be a dealer installed option, rather than a factory one. So it would cost more, than in the configurator. But yes, you could do that.

    Hi Marek, Great review and your English is fantastic! Shame about some of the subtitles though - looks like you put it through some automatic translation app! Nice van, but I would still favour a minivan which is much more car-like and not such a brick to drive around, and not so high so it fits in underground carparks. The only European one that I know of these days is the Citroen SpaceTourer. Also, in the Citroen, you can fold the 5 rear seats flat into the floor without removing them and two people can camp in it.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an option, and personally I would not choose it, because it forces you to use the climate control more, than with a full metal roof. I guess it depends on individual preferences. I'm sure it would be nice to see the mountain peaks, when travelling with kids, but when you're in the middle of the plains going 1000 km on the motorway, you may want some extra shade, and then you have to try and cover the panoramic roof (maybe with something like in the Skoda Fabia - th-cam.com/video/sbRaZ77zOEA/w-d-xo.html - perhaps VW even offers such covers, but I didn't see them on the options list).

      I asked VW about the extra table. They said you can order only one table with the car, when it's signed off for production, but you can order another table as accessory.
      I'd check with the dealer, if there's some electronic wizardry involved, which requires you to order one table for production, before you can install one after you take delivery of the car. I noticed there's a sensor, which detects if the table is open, when it is between the front seats. If it was me, I'd make the rail sensors standard across the board, but I imagine it could save a few cents not to include those sensors, which would then somehow prevent you from installing a table. So double check with the dealer.

    Does it come from the factory with solar on top to charge the batt pack on days when you don't drive it or when you have it parked at work? With that much roof space you could easily get ten to twenty miles a day of free charge from the sun.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, and no.
      I did some rough calculations based on the Sono Motors Sion solar car claims.
      The roof area of a car like this Multivan is enough to fit panels for maybe 2 kWh worth of energy. That's on a sunny day, perfect conditions, parked in direct sunlight (suboptimal for cooling later, though theoretically you could just use the excess energy to pre-condition the car). Anyway, 2 kWh on a sunny summer day (may vary depending on where in the world you live), assuming you're parked in the middle of an empty parking lot, because when you're driving there may be some trees or taller vehicles next to you casting a shadow. Maybe you'd harvest 5-6 miles.

    • @chinabluewho
      @chinabluewho ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarekDrivesENG The Hyundai Sonata hybrid has a tiny roof and that car gets 3 miles a day and it would get much more than that but it has an insanely small batt pack on it.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it say it gets 3 miles a day or have you actually experienced it? If you look at say home PV panels and those smaller travel panels that you can use to top up something like a Jackery, you'll see the size and the output. I assume for a car it's going to be something in the middle.
      Also, you have to park in direct sunlight, which is not something a normal person would do, having a choice o parking in the shade.
      And we're still talking perfect sunny weather. I have solar panels on my roof, and even when I'm not at home, I can see every cloud in my app. The dips in energy production sun vs. cloud are enormous.
      If you look at Hyundai's website, they say these produce 200 Wh.
      tech.hyundaimotorgroup.com/article/everything-about-the-sonata-hybrids-solar-roof/
      This is going to get theoretical, because the Sonata is a HEV not a PHEV, and it's therefore lighter, etc. BUT let's assume for the brief moments it uses the electric motor, it will consume about 7 kWh per 100 km. So you're producing 1/35 of the energy consumed. Also, as this is a HEV, the charging and discharging of the battery is much quicker, and the petrol engine may already have to kick in, while driving to top up the battery.
      That said, if you park in direct sunlight, this type of roof panel may help run air conditioning, thus leaving a bit more energy to be used for moving the car.

      The first diesel hybrid I ever encountered was the Peugeot 508 RXH (one of my first video reviews - check it out, you'll have a good laugh th-cam.com/video/iJOBie9Z2Uk/w-d-xo.html). Mercedes does some diesel hybrid as well (th-cam.com/video/Lshlgx2gd2w/w-d-xo.html). I guess it's a matter of supply and demand. Places where PHEVs are becoming popular due to stringent emissions regulations are usually also anti-diesel. And places, where diesel engines are still popular usually don't care enough about emissions to consider PHEVs.
      As for the review length - it depends on the car. Some cars I have more to say about, than others. In this one the whole interior configuration business was long enough.
      Also it's a bitch to edit for my editor, so I have to restrain myself :)

    Perhaps its my American size orientation, or the fact that I drove a larger American Ford van and then a 13-ton Isuzu truck, as well as a Mercedes ML350 first gen, but to me driving my Metris (Vito) passenger van is very much like driving a large car, albeit easier to drive and more maneuverable. I’m not sure how it could be more car like. I mean it lacks a modern infotainment computer, but that to me is a plus.

      From your perspective - maybe. Here in Europe the roads and parking spaces are much smaller. Also we have minivans like the S-Max, which put some sedans to shame in terms of handling. Nobody is trying to make this VW sporty, but no longer being based on a delivery van helps boost overall comfort.

    We don't get this box in Canada. I guess it's just too expensive to attract interest. Which makes me wonder about how well the Buzz will sell… if we ever get the Buzz. It's taking forever for VW to even deliver the ID4 here. I still haven't seen one driving around the streets of Toronto. And they've stopped taking orders for the 2021 and 2022s 2 months ago. LOL. The rumour is the Chattanooga plant starts full production in August. Deliveries if the EV6, Ioniq 5, Q4 and i4 are also massively delayed. I just saw the new BMW X1 and iX1. That's looking like a big improvement. But again, no iX1 for Canada... Could you ask BMW Germany why they hate us in Canada?

      @@MarekDrivesENG I actually got a chance to test drive the ID4 AWD but I had to drive 45 min to Brampton and it was a 2min test drive because they gave me the vehicle with 3% battery. LOL. The dealership gave the car to another customer during my appointment time. As for sold products on the streets, I think there might be 30 in a city of 5 million. I’ve seen 2 Ioniq 5s driving around downtown.

      @KevinN the most popular EV these days on the streets of Warsaw seems to be... Mustang Mach-E. Ford doesn't talk to me, so I don't know what the car is like for longer, but the short time behind the wheel I got with it - it seemed like a very pleasant car. Much better, than VW ID series, which I consider a huge disappointment.
      I was on the waiting list for the 1st Edition ID.3, but with all the delays and covid restrictions I cancelled my order. I don't regret it.

      @kevinn1158 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarekDrivesENG interesting. The Mach E though is 15k dollars more. I’m trying to withhold my opinion on the ID 4 because the part that was not developed well was the software and that apparently has been changed quite a bit. The wife does like the Ioniq 5, she says it’s too funky and the EV6 got a “are you trying to be 20 again” comment from the wife. I like the BMW i4 and my friend would probably get my a good deal on one but those rear seats are really tight. I suppose the Q4 could be an option as well but that’s 10-15k more.

Why they can't just redesign the first van as it was and cram inside an electromotor and everybody happy. Look what has done the Chinese with the Ora Beetle (okay the inside is like some 'meriken cars of the 60-ties, but overall it is nice, better than the WV new Beetle.
    More ahead they goes with the designs more crap they became. The designers imposes uglyness and masses (with their manipolated brains) silently accepts (and they believe they are "zmardt.")
    This thing loox as a "nothing" on wheels rolling on the road, and inside it loox as a hypertechno crap just to make the (poor) people inside feel dumb, naturally this thing is fully zmardt, right?
