We drive the new Volkswagen Multivan and Transporter to see how this large vehicle compares.
Volkswagen says the new T6.1 van range is the biggest change to the vehicle since 2003. With new safety tech on board, plus a more modern interior and some changes to the dynamics of the van, the T6.1 is safer and more comfortable than the previous VW T6 iteration. But is this Hanover-built van the family car - or commercial van - you are looking for?
Vans make heaps of sense if you need configurable spaces behind the front seats. Whether that is in a stripped out panel van, something more sophisticated or just a big passenger bus, you’ll get more bodies and things in than any SUV.
The T6.1 primarily competes with the Kia Carnival on the passenger front and vehicles like the Ford Transit on the commercial front.
In today’s video, Tom takes a detailed look at the new Volkswagen T6.1 Multivan Cruise passenger van to give you detailed insights about this vehicle.

A new one cost less than an old one 🤣 The passenger area in the Comfortline is excellent, with tables and storage for wet things is halfway to a camper. Twin sliding doors are handy and with AWD this is a great thing for softroading like beach days. Good to see decent sized brakes on a van for a change too, most are a bit meh. 80 litre tank will give even the twin turbo version a +1,000 km range. I've been wanting a cheaper used one as a runabout camper for a while but they don't seem to depreciate as quickly as I would like.

Never thought I would ever actually live to see this model launched! The 6.1 was a long time coming. Do you think it was worth the wait? Or should buyers have gone with a V-Klasse a year ago or a compromised with a Carnival in 2020?

If you are buying one, I would go for the twin turbo 2 litre. We had the single turbo 2 litre and the turbo-lag was really annoying, particularly at round-abouts.
