I’m laying in the hospital right now. I had a car change lanes with no warning at 50mph and take me out. The Tech 5 vest saved my life but it was hot yesterday and I didn’t have a jacket on and I was wearing sweatpants. 60% covered in serious road rash. 2 contusions on my right thigh. Nothing broken. No neck or spine injury. The air bag deployed and without question saved my life. Had I been wearing all my gear, I would probably be home right now. I did have gloves on and my hands are perfectly fine. I had riding sneakers on and my feet are fine. WEAR YOUR GEAR!!
I wish you had taken the pants and jacket too… And you would have been riding. And not live in pain at a hospital… Because that sucks. Hope some one else read this and take on all the gear… And you may save one that only have to buy new gear and fix the bike. And not have to fix or have some thing broken on them self.
My riding instructor told me, in case I was wondering if I needed gloves, he said I should try to run as fast as I can, dive forward on the asphalt and land on my hands to see how just that would mess them up. I always ride fully geared up.
Went down yesterday on my 890R doing about 70mph, wearing my hypernaked brand (plus racing) racing gauntlets. Not a scratch on my upper body thanks to my RF1400, gloves, and jacket.
I had gloves and a jacket when I went down just a little faster and other than lots of heat Burns from sliding the only upper body injuries was where my gloves and my jacket sleeve meet above my wrist had pretty bad damage gauntlet style would have prevented that
@@Cheezmonka came down from a wheelie and bike got unsettled and went into a tank slapper I couldn't recover. 7 years riding bikes never seen a tank slapper that bad.
I got taken out by a deer while doing 45-50 mph last year. Had I not been wearing gloves my hands would’ve been absolutely destroyed. Wear gloves, y’all.
@@Cheezmonka The deer took out my front wheel which sent me straight to the pavement. The bike landed on my left leg and the bike and I slid about 20-30 ft and into the ditch on the opposite side of the road. My right arm from elbow to wrist was shredded (cause I wasn’t wearing a jacket) and my left leg just above the knee was swollen like a softball. The front lip of my helmet (open face cause I’m a dipshit cruiser boi) kept me from losing my nose, but it was skinned pretty bad. Had to scream for help as I live in the middle of nowhere, but fortunately some backwoods folks heard me and came to my rescue. I thought my leg was broken, but it fortunately was not. Ambulance took me to the ER. It took about two weeks to make a full recovery, but I was incredibly lucky. I now have proper riding gear for all seasons, a full face helmet and am very good at repairing my bike, which also took a pretty serious beating.

I’m amazed at how many motorcycle gloves don’t have a palm slider … especially the fashion cafe racer style gloves … grip is your enemy with a glove … it has to slide on the road to dissipate progressively the energy of the impact …
I know right!? I want good gloves but I do not want to look like a wannabe motoGP power ranger. There are some like Knox Handbury which look good in classic street fashion and is something I will probably buy this summer. Some Macna gloves also have small sliders on one side but 99% of classic style gloves have barely anything at palm/wrist, at best some thick leather and maybe gel padding underneath. Palm slide testing should be mandatory at basic CE level 1 tests.
Gloves are a must! I went down in my neighborhood doing 35mph about a month after I started riding. No gear besides a helmet. Big chunk got taken out of my palm. 6 weeks later I was healed enough to close the fingers on my right hand. Even cheap riding gloves are better than nothing. You won't catch me on a bike without gear ever again
I can't always keep up a full first-aid kit and trauma equipment on the road... BUT I DO keep aloe-vera WITH lidocaine. It's cheap, readily available, and ER's use lidocaine by the BUCKETS, so they're VERY familiar with it when you show the label to EMT's on sight... I hope you never have to deal with anything bad... BUT for a couple bucks, it answers a question I get ALL the time because apparently almost nobody knows what to do about road rash "on the spot"... ...AND when you've got a "total noob" in their first real (bad) case of road rash, it can help get them back to "coherent" enough to be able to assess for things like brain trauma and the like... JUST slather away... maybe cover lightly with a rag (clean cloth) unless there's a "bleed" ongoing... ;o)
I went to Cycle Gear roughly 2 years ago to go buy myself some winter gloves. Coincidentally, this other guy wearing his helmet came into the store and was looking for new gloves as well. I finally narrowed my search down to one pair of gloves and I was looking for the right size, only to be told that helmet man had taken the last pair of those gloves in my size. Thanks a lot, Yam, YOU TOOK THE LAST PAIR that day!!
I have the Held Chikkara for street use when it’s warm, just like the Race glove in the video, a bit less beefy but with ventilation! Full Kevlar and hard shell gauntlet, sewn together ringfinger and pinkie. Inside kangaroo, a fantastic glove and not that expensive!!
Im currently riding in Vietnam while I’m on vacation. And the amount of carelessness these people have is new levels of impossible. I’ve recorded so many incidents on my GoPro where men, women, teens and even kids on electric scooters. Eating the tarmac and just SHREDDING their hands because they CBF wearing gloves 🤦♂️ I get that the streets here are slow, and at times I’d be topping out at 40MPH tops, but man, watching these people wipe out at just 20mph and their hands COVERED in blood. It’s just a whole different level of not giving a shit. I on the other hand, get weird and judge-mental glares because I’m wearing my SMX-2 Carbons and my full face helmet. Go figure 🤷♂️
This is pretty much South East Asia. I'm in the Philippines and a lot of riders don't wear gloves here either. At least helmets are mandated by law now.
@@Q_N- Vietnamese here, good helmet are expensive here so most average folks will just go for the cheap half-head ones. Also, full-face and Open-face ones are way too hot to use in our climate, especially in the South. Same with gloves too.
I live in Arizona. I rarely see riders wearing helmets, gloves or a riding shirt/jacket. Meanwhile I get weird looks going through a gas station with my helmet, leather jacket and cheap ass gloves. Ordering proper gear to replace the jacket and gloves. Can’t believe how insane people are. Going down the 40 (Yucca, AZ) I’m getting passed by semis while going 70-80mph. The motorcycle riders I see wear no gear even in those insane conditions.
Take some advice from a chaplain that has been called to hospital visits of riders who have needed hand and arm amputations because they didn't wear gloves or protective jackets; you don't want to learn the hard way. Gloves and jackets are a must.
I fell down in the highway wearing all my expensive gear and that is the reason why the onlsy consequence was a very bruised shoulder, some "beauty marks" in my pants, jacket, helmet and gloves, but no burning in my skin. Dress for the fall, not for the ride.
After my 1st accident 3 years ago in wet weather my bike needed fixing my shark evoline series 3 pro carbon helmet was unusable but my cheap gloves were still good for another fall. I kept my helmet as a reminder to stop racing like an idiot in wet weather.
Tuning my bike one day, I decided to take her out for a spin without gloves on, and got caught in a hail storm...No Bueno!!! And I know you touched on it briefly, but being in Law Enforcement, and seeing several motorcycle accidents, may I loudly recommend PALM SLIDERS...Walking around with hunks of hamburger where you hands should be is also not optimal. Great video guys!!
Thoughtful video, and I was glad to see Spite mention CE protection. That's something that more riders should pay serious attention to when buying gear.
I crashed going 90....had all gear except pants and gloves(gloves were in bag becuase they fit me weird).....have a life long scar on my knuckes that's reminds me every time I ride to wear gloves
2 years back i had a minor laydown with very minor abrasion on my leg and arm. I went back to the leather shop i bought my jacket and gloves at (for a really decent price) and gave the sales guy a coffee shop gift card as thanks. I showed him the road rash on my jacket and gloves and he was impressed.
I started riding last year and picked up some Dainese 4 Stroke 2 gloves, very happy with them. They're more in category 2 since they're not full gauntlets but they've got all the slide portions on the pinky and base of the palm, they're perforated for air flow and have resin-encased steel inserts for reinforcement. Very happy with them, though they weren't cheap (~$250). I figure you only get one set of hands.
I have three pairs of gloves: summer ones with ventilation, medium weather where it's raining and/or cold but not too cold, and winter gloves which are heated
Icon used to make gloves back around '05 that had titanium knuckle protection and titanium rivets on the heel of the palm for sliding. Still to this this day the most protective gloves I have ever found. I literally had a Speed Triple bounce off my hand at 80 and nothing. Not even any damage to the gloves. ETA: I just looked them up to see if there's anything equivalent, and apparently my old school ones are now worth over $200. They don't make them like that anymore...
Knuckle protection on the back of the glove is really important. I had a lowside on the track and it was the back of my gloves that took the hit. A friend hit a deer and as he was sliding down the asphalt, his gloves wore through the back, right down to his skin. He had several broken ribs and other injuries, but his gear saved him from road rash. He now uses armored gloves.
Wearing gear makes me feel cool. Putting my helmet on reminds me of playing halo, when you spend your childhood through the helmet of master chief it makes you feel cool to put one on in real life. When I played football putting pads on made you feel like iron man. It feels good to be protected.
That is true. Weird how the mind works sometime. I've watched F1 for 15 years and think the helmets look really cool. So I always wanna put on a helmet, because to me it looks cool.
Kangaroo leather is fucking insane. It has some serious specs on it that make it dramatically different than most leathers like cow/goat/pig 👍 source: am amateur leatherworker

Depends on the gloves, good grade leather with Palm and wrist support. I wear in summer weather but only for literally few miles and only out for under half hour depending on circumstances but any further distance I use my other full coverage gloves. If someone wants to ride wearing Speedo swim wear, t shirt and trainers then it's up to them. But if someone wants protection but ended up with useless equipment then definitely help and educate them. I'm against legislation telling the individual what they must wear.
I went down last year coming out of a round about on the way home one night after work (think I may have hit something but rear slid from me) not going fast maybe 20-30 km/h. Fortunately I was wearing some padded gloves for winter, unfortunately the one on my right hand got caught on something on the way down and got thrown from said hand and I smacked it hard on the road. Thankfully there wasn't much damage aside swelling and being unable to do a proper handshake for a good few Months, the real mvp though was the full face helmet, textile jacket and proper bike shoes, my visor took it like a champ.
Question I put to young riders I notice riding without gloves, would you be willing to run down the road as fast as you can (10-13kmph) and throw yourself down onto your un-gloved hands and knees and slide to a stop. The look they give you is priceless, like they just encountered an utter moron because what person in their right mind would do that. But they are quite willing to ride around at highway speeds, even city speeds, without gloves. Go figure.
I spent too many years bicycle commuting and dropped enough times on sandy corners and such, on a bicycle I'd almost rather ride without a helmet than without gloves. Even dropping at a modest 20 MPH on a bicycle, I'd lose enough skin to be painful for weeks. On a motorcycle, I'm not riding without both.
Anyone else remember the fad of gloves having metal slider rivets in the palm? Thinking it allowed better slide protection, but the rivets turned sideways, got sharp, and hot during an accident, and sliced through gloves and hands..
IMO gloves and boots are the most important for regular traffic. Period. Helmet next. Do it, and always think everyone hates you and are out to get you. Mostly when you are riding.
You left out the best part of the white track gloves. The Knox scaphoid protection system. They can actually prevent a broken wrist besides saving your skin.
I got taken out by a deer 2 years ago unlike the guy below my comment I had on Alpinestars shorty gloves I was doing the same speed as him roughly I almost lost my ring finger the Alpinestars gloves totally failed they completely fell apart with that being said I will never own anything alpinestars ever again they failed me, they let me down
Absolute must for me is palm sliders, they aren't offered in many gloves unfortunately. I've been running the scorpion sg3 MK ll. They've been needed to be replaced every year though (at a minimum of 10k miles and 5 track days a year) not sure what I will go with next, probably Knox or hypernaked
I love my Odin MFG Heavy Hitters. There are probably more protective gloves out there, but they are so comfortable and the feel through the bars is great. I have had a minor low side wearing another pair of Odin MFG gloves and the leather in the palms handles abrasion amazingly. No scratches, bruises or cuts on my hands. I had a cheapy Sedici Adv style jacket and it had amazing protection too. I guess the moral is good protection doesn’t always have to be from the most expensive product. (Though the helmets I ride with are an Arai and a Shoei.)
That was downright well done. The info was super valuable, even for me who has bought literally dozens and dozens of pairs of gloves over the years. Your comments on comfort, breath-ability and feel are something I am going to use on my next pair of gloves. Spite's comments were very on target. Awesome.
Always wear the appropriate motorcycle gloves when riding because the pavement is hard and it's especially hard on naked skin. Your skin deserves to be protected against the unforgiving pavement.
If you go down the first thing you put down is your hands. Those delicate, sensitive hands that we use for absolutely everything. Just think about your life without hands for a second. Hand protection is the most important part of your protective gear after your helmet. If you can only afford two items of protective gear it must be the helmet and gloves
Have crashed many times, and my gear has taken the hit every time. The one time I wasn't wearing gloves when I came off, it left my hand in a bit of a mess, and that was barely over walking speed.
My dailies are RevIt! Dirt 3 gloves. They're like the Striker 3 but with more armor - basically the Revit version of Yam's Taichi street gloves. Super breathable, palm-heel striker, armor over every finger joint plus a big Gixxer-bro knuckle duster for the ladies. The gloves were a bit stiff at first, but it didn't take long for them to conform to my hands. The cuffs go a little ways up the wrist, just enough that your jacket cuffs can be tightened down over them.
Many many years ago I was a dude who didn't ride gloves. One lovely mid-summer day here in Vegas while riding my cbr600F2 (bitd baby) my left hand was actually BURNED from pulling the clutch lever by the time I got to my destination. It was about 115 degrees that day.
I put on my full gear today and actually it took me like 30 minutes 😂😂 at the end of it I was like: yes, it’s like putting on a knight armor for the battle ground and damn thats a extra weight to handle but at the end our body isn’t made for bike accidents so better be protected 🤷♂️
To be honest, riding in full gear gives me much more confidence than without, it feels like a protective shell. I still ride a 50cc moped, but since i started taking motorcycle lessons (almost have my license, just not yet) i’ve been at least wearing my jacket when going to places. If i ride without it, its like driving a car without your seatbelt. Same story for the gloves. I used ski gloves at first, and no gloves in summer. I now have a pair of good winter gloves and a pair of midseason gloves. I have already been hit by a car at 25~30kph, t boned, whilst hitting the ground it messed my knees up for quite a while. Im all good now, but man, that hurted like hell. Definitely learned something that day.

For Christmas my sister got me a pair of HDMC perforated leather gloves. Yes I wear then on my Suzuki 😆 they're comfy and make me feel protected. No hard protection though.
When I was young I took a spill and my hand went knuckles down on the right side of my body. It scraped a good amount of the protective material off my glove and I moved my hand rather quickly away. If I didn’t have those gloves my right hand would probably not be the 100% use of it I have today.
I have 2 different pairs of gloves. Can't recall brand and model at the moment. My warm weather gloves are similar to Yam's not-track day gloves. Breathable yet with beefy protection. Cold weather is pretty much the same but with less breathability but more of a gauntlet type.
I can't even imagine how depressed I would be if I could no longer use my hands. No more riding, no videogames, no BJJ, no more working as an aircraft mechanic. It boggles my mind when people don't wear gear.

No matter how hot it is and how hard I'm squidding, I always wear at least helmet, gloves, and proper shoes. It's not that expensive and it's worth it.
As a trauma physician, I see the worst of the worst. Crashing in the dirt on a dirt bike completely different vs crashing a bike on street. Dirt bike riding occurs on forgiving dirt and bushes. Asphalt is slippery at high speeds. So many rigid, non flexible items along road ways. Bones and muscles much easier to repair vs internal bleeding bleed. Brain, heart, liver, spleen, intestines are similar to tethered water balloons. These structure move, bounce, and twist causing tearing and bruising. I wear full gear with air bag when I ride on the street. All my bikes have stability control hidden in the background just in case. I have been riding over 50 years and raced professionally when I was young. You want to stay away from my ER.
Any glove is better than no glove. I loved the light minimalist summer gloves, but last week I had a wasp in my jacket sleeve entering by the small gap around my wrist. The wasp was really upset and made sure I was aware....My next glove will be covering the jacket sleeves. I may still meet upset wasps...I just want them to be OUT of my clothes
Gloves... sliders are a must. That hand goes down and ends up gripping the pavement instead of sliding... you have broken bones. Those knuckles don't like junebugs or small rocks hitting them when at highway speeds.
those plastic pucks are so you don't snap your wrist. If you don't have those, if you just have leather or something and your hand takes your weight during a speedy dismount on asphalt, the friction is going to cause your palm to stick while the rest of your mass moves forward at a much higher velocity. Snapping your wrist. Used to be an incredibly common injury among motorcycle riders until they figured that you need something to slide on.
I wear nice leather gloves on my sport bike but wear thinner dirt bike gloves on my Honda Grom. I crashed at 20 mph coming down from a wheelie and also slipped on gravel (sorta pushing the limits) and I broke my hand both times. ZERO road rash which was great but no actual hand support. Choose your gloves with your risks you're willing to take for more or less comfort.
My daily commute gloves is an mx pair, but after watching this I’m going to start using a leather dry rider pair I have. I’m totally guilty of not wearing enough gear - basically because of the heat (North Queensland Australia). Gear manufacturers, or at least local stores, do a crap job of supplying gear that cool enough. Lightest protective ride shirt only available in dark black. I’m rethinking all this as I’m toying with the idea of buying a bigger bike again and starting to do some on and off road touring.
Getting a bike is a set of vertical learning curves for things you never knew had learning curves. So much fun. A burning question waaay off topic. 'what's with the classical music. I like it in there. It's a big part of how I roll.
I can't wear leather due to being allergic to a tanning material that is commonly used called chromium. I can not find a good set of summer gloves that has wrist sliders and knuckle protection. There are a ton of synthetic materials that outperform leather so I do not understand why there is not a good protecting glove that I can wear.
Funny you guys mentioned hands being so important after basically shaming people into not wearing gauntlets for daily gear. There have been a lot of friends/people ask me about what bike I recommend, what gear, and how to go about starting to ride and I always tell them to not cheap out on a helmet and pair of gauntlets. I’ve crashed 3 times in 10 years and don’t want to know what my hands would be like right now if I hadn’t, especially after fracturing my wrist on the 2nd crash (including skull fracture and tbi). I know we have different experiences but I love gauntlets for their look and their protection, so they’re a must in my eyes.
I'm going for Knox Handroid Mk4. There is also a pod version (short cuff). Fantastic protection though probably not enough ventilation for Texas. Looks great (my opinion) but maybe not for everyone. A love/hate appearance.
I remember watching a MotoAmerica qualifying race where the rider went down at triple digit speeds with his hand trapped under the bike. It ground through the titanium knuckle protector and into skin. It did some decent damage but he was out racing the next day
I even own 3 pairs of gloves. I ride a naked bike all year round. So here it comes: Rev’it Chevak (GTX) - using it in winter time. Very thick glove. I use it at temprature of 0 - 10 Celcius Alpinestar Smx - mid seasson. Thinner but still warm enough to ride during spring season nice for 10-20 celcius Rev’it (not sure about type anymore but looks like these) Fly - my summer gloves and my favorites. Very good feel, lots of air. I use it at 20 Celcius and up.
Quick helmet story: I knew a guy back in the 70s that bought one of those cheapo sparkly open face helmets at an auto parts store. We rode over the mountain on dirt and down two remote tavern. He hung his new helmet on the handlebar of his dirtbike. It fell off and cracked. That dummy was thrilled when the store gave him a brand new exact replacement🤦🏻♂️
The HJC or LS2 $100 helmets are ECE rated and will protect your skull from cracking open. There's absolutely no reason not to wear a helmet. The gloves are even cheaper.
@@yarpenzigrin1893 Hjc is also decently comfortable for oval heads, got the c70 so far its good and comfortable. Albeit im already spoiled due to trying out the AGV k6 and now imma be buying it for xmas lmao. Never hurts to have more.
I had a 115 MPH tank slapper on my TL1000s back in '98. Went down hard. T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. Helmet saved my life. No broken bones, but I had a shit ton of road rash, and my hands got it pretty bad. It sucked. I don't always learn my lesson, but when I do, you can bet I learned it the hard way!
Have never not worn gloves on a bike. Agree with Yam on feel through the glove, it's the main reason I don't wear the liners on my winter gauntlets. Gives up too much feel.
My biggest problem is arthritis. Just got back into motorcycling after 20 years. Been using my hands a lot for work, and now I learn that anything that compresses my knuckles results in days of pain. I have LONG, SKINNY hands. I had to settle for manufacturers that use actual numbered glove sizing, and the gloves that don't compress my knuckles are WAY oversized for my hand width. I got some elkskin gloves from Aerostich and they're okay, but I'll have to sew in some Velcro cinchers to keep them on my hands. The supplier is Geier, a glove maker out of Centralia, Washington. I recommend getting their actual elkskin roper gloves from the source. You can't buy direct, unfortunately, but they're top notch. I wear a size 13. I've tried on a pair of 12's and the thickness and build make much more sense than the Aerostich version. Looking forward to getting an actual size 13 in the plain roper glove.

I use a similar example for any protective gear like motorcycle gear. Especially friends that wear regular jeans or kakis. It gets the point across.
As a GSXR rider, I can personally guarantee that most of us don't beat our girlfriends/wives... mainly because we don't have any

I got taken out by a deer while doing 45-50 mph last year. Had I not been wearing gloves my hands would’ve been absolutely destroyed. Wear gloves, y’all.

@@Cheezmonka The deer took out my front wheel which sent me straight to the pavement. The bike landed on my left leg and the bike and I slid about 20-30 ft and into the ditch on the opposite side of the road. My right arm from elbow to wrist was shredded (cause I wasn’t wearing a jacket) and my left leg just above the knee was swollen like a softball. The front lip of my helmet (open face cause I’m a dipshit cruiser boi) kept me from losing my nose, but it was skinned pretty bad. Had to scream for help as I live in the middle of nowhere, but fortunately some backwoods folks heard me and came to my rescue. I thought my leg was broken, but it fortunately was not. Ambulance took me to the ER. It took about two weeks to make a full recovery, but I was incredibly lucky. I now have proper riding gear for all seasons, a full face helmet and am very good at repairing my bike, which also took a pretty serious beating.

I’m amazed at how many motorcycle gloves don’t have a palm slider … especially the fashion cafe racer style gloves … grip is your enemy with a glove … it has to slide on the road to dissipate progressively the energy of the impact …
I know right!? I want good gloves but I do not want to look like a wannabe motoGP power ranger. There are some like Knox Handbury which look good in classic street fashion and is something I will probably buy this summer. Some Macna gloves also have small sliders on one side but 99% of classic style gloves have barely anything at palm/wrist, at best some thick leather and maybe gel padding underneath.
Palm slide testing should be mandatory at basic CE level 1 tests.

Gloves are a must! I went down in my neighborhood doing 35mph about a month after I started riding. No gear besides a helmet. Big chunk got taken out of my palm. 6 weeks later I was healed enough to close the fingers on my right hand. Even cheap riding gloves are better than nothing. You won't catch me on a bike without gear ever again
I can't always keep up a full first-aid kit and trauma equipment on the road... BUT I DO keep aloe-vera WITH lidocaine. It's cheap, readily available, and ER's use lidocaine by the BUCKETS, so they're VERY familiar with it when you show the label to EMT's on sight... I hope you never have to deal with anything bad... BUT for a couple bucks, it answers a question I get ALL the time because apparently almost nobody knows what to do about road rash "on the spot"...
...AND when you've got a "total noob" in their first real (bad) case of road rash, it can help get them back to "coherent" enough to be able to assess for things like brain trauma and the like... JUST slather away... maybe cover lightly with a rag (clean cloth) unless there's a "bleed" ongoing... ;o)

I went to Cycle Gear roughly 2 years ago to go buy myself some winter gloves. Coincidentally, this other guy wearing his helmet came into the store and was looking for new gloves as well. I finally narrowed my search down to one pair of gloves and I was looking for the right size, only to be told that helmet man had taken the last pair of those gloves in my size. I have the Held Chikkara for street use when it’s warm, just like the Race glove in the video, a bit less beefy but with ventilation! Full Kevlar and hard shell gauntlet, sewn together ringfinger and pinkie. Inside kangaroo, a fantastic glove and not that expensive!!
Im currently riding in Vietnam while I’m on vacation. And the amount of carelessness these people have is new levels of impossible. I’ve recorded so many incidents on my GoPro where men, women, teens and even kids on electric scooters. Eating the tarmac and just SHREDDING their hands because they CBF wearing gloves 🤦♂️ I get that the streets here are slow, and at times I’d be topping out at 40MPH tops, but man, watching these people wipe out at just 20mph and their hands COVERED in blood. It’s just a whole different level of not giving a shit. I on the other hand, get weird and judge-mental glares because I’m wearing my SMX-2 Carbons and my full face helmet. Go figure 🤷♂️
This is pretty much South East Asia. I'm in the Philippines and a lot of riders don't wear gloves here either. At least helmets are mandated by law now.

I live in Arizona. I rarely see riders wearing helmets, gloves or a riding shirt/jacket. Meanwhile I get weird looks going through a gas station with my helmet, leather jacket and cheap ass gloves. Ordering proper gear to replace the jacket and gloves. Can’t believe how insane people are. Going down the 40 (Yucca, AZ) I’m getting passed by semis while going 70-80mph. The motorcycle riders I see wear no gear even in those insane conditions.

Take some advice from a chaplain that has been called to hospital visits of riders who have needed hand and arm amputations because they didn't wear gloves or protective jackets; you don't want to learn the hard way. Gloves and jackets are a must.
I fell down in the highway wearing all my expensive gear and that is the reason why the onlsy consequence was a very bruised shoulder, some "beauty marks" in my pants, jacket, helmet and gloves, but no burning in my skin.

After my 1st accident 3 years ago in wet weather my bike needed fixing my shark evoline series 3 pro carbon helmet was unusable but my cheap gloves were still good for another fall. I kept my helmet as a reminder to stop racing like an idiot in wet weather.
Tuning my bike one day, I decided to take her out for a spin without gloves on, and got caught in a hail storm...No Bueno!!! And I know you touched on it briefly, but being in Law Enforcement, and seeing several motorcycle accidents, may I loudly recommend PALM SLIDERS...Walking around with hunks of hamburger where you hands should be is also not optimal. Great video guys!!

2 years back i had a minor laydown with very minor abrasion on my leg and arm. I went back to the leather shop i bought my jacket and gloves at (for a really decent price) and gave the sales guy a coffee shop gift card as thanks. I showed him the road rash on my jacket and gloves and he was impressed.
I started riding last year and picked up some Dainese 4 Stroke 2 gloves, very happy with them. They're more in category 2 since they're not full gauntlets but they've got all the slide portions on the pinky and base of the palm, they're perforated for air flow and have resin-encased steel inserts for reinforcement. Very happy with them, though they weren't cheap (~$250). I figure you only get one set of hands.
I have three pairs of gloves: summer ones with ventilation, medium weather where it's raining and/or cold but not too cold, and winter gloves which are heated

Icon used to make gloves back around '05 that had titanium knuckle protection and titanium rivets on the heel of the palm for sliding. Still to this this day the most protective gloves I have ever found. I literally had a Speed Triple bounce off my hand at 80 and nothing. Not even any damage to the gloves.
ETA: I just looked them up to see if there's anything equivalent, and apparently my old school ones are now worth over $200. They don't make them like that anymore...

Knuckle protection on the back of the glove is really important. I had a lowside on the track and it was the back of my gloves that took the hit.
A friend hit a deer and as he was sliding down the asphalt, his gloves wore through the back, right down to his skin. He had several broken ribs and other injuries, but his gear saved him from road rash. He now uses armored gloves.

Gauntlet gloves on the street have another advantage... they keep wasps out of your sleeves.
Wearing gear makes me feel cool. Putting my helmet on reminds me of playing halo, when you spend your childhood through the helmet of master chief it makes you feel cool to put one on in real life. When I played football putting pads on made you feel like iron man. It feels good to be protected.
That is true. Weird how the mind works sometime. I've watched F1 for 15 years and think the helmets look really cool. So I always wanna put on a helmet, because to me it looks cool.

Depends on the gloves, good grade leather with Palm and wrist support. I wear in summer weather but only for literally few miles and only out for under half hour depending on circumstances but any further distance I use my other full coverage gloves. If someone wants to ride wearing Speedo swim wear, t shirt and trainers then it's up to them. But if someone wants protection but ended up with useless equipment then definitely help and educate them. I'm against legislation telling the individual what they must wear.

I went down last year coming out of a round about on the way home one night after work (think I may have hit something but rear slid from me) not going fast maybe 20-30 km/h. Fortunately I was wearing some padded gloves for winter, unfortunately the one on my right hand got caught on something on the way down and got thrown from said hand and I smacked it hard on the road. Thankfully there wasn't much damage aside swelling and being unable to do a proper handshake for a good few Months, the real mvp though was the full face helmet, textile jacket and proper bike shoes, my visor took it like a champ.

Question I put to young riders I notice riding without gloves, would you be willing to run down the road as fast as you can (10-13kmph) and throw yourself down onto your un-gloved hands and knees and slide to a stop. The look they give you is priceless, like they just encountered an utter moron because what person in their right mind would do that. But they are quite willing to ride around at highway speeds, even city speeds, without gloves. Go figure.
I spent too many years bicycle commuting and dropped enough times on sandy corners and such, on a bicycle I'd almost rather ride without a helmet than without gloves. Even dropping at a modest 20 MPH on a bicycle, I'd lose enough skin to be painful for weeks. On a motorcycle, I'm not riding without both.
Anyone else remember the fad of gloves having metal slider rivets in the palm? Thinking it allowed better slide protection, but the rivets turned sideways, got sharp, and hot during an accident, and sliced through gloves and hands..
IMO gloves and boots are the most important for regular traffic. Period. Helmet next. Do it, and always think everyone hates you and are out to get you. Mostly when you are riding.
You left out the best part of the white track gloves. The Knox scaphoid protection system. They can actually prevent a broken wrist besides saving your skin.
I wear the Mechanix Wear impact gloves and they work for me when I ride my motorcycle on city streets.

Absolute must for me is palm sliders, they aren't offered in many gloves unfortunately. I've been running the scorpion sg3 MK ll. They've been needed to be replaced every year though (at a minimum of 10k miles and 5 track days a year) not sure what I will go with next, probably Knox or hypernaked
I love my Odin MFG Heavy Hitters. There are probably more protective gloves out there, but they are so comfortable and the feel through the bars is great. I have had a minor low side wearing another pair of Odin MFG gloves and the leather in the palms handles abrasion amazingly. No scratches, bruises or cuts on my hands. I had a cheapy Sedici Adv style jacket and it had amazing protection too. I guess the moral is good protection doesn’t always have to be from the most expensive product. (Though the helmets I ride with are an Arai and a Shoei.)

Always wear the appropriate motorcycle gloves when riding because the pavement is hard and it's especially hard on naked skin. Your skin deserves to be protected against the unforgiving pavement.
The MSF schools here in Houston require you to have a helmet, high top boots and motorcycle gloves.
If you go down the first thing you put down is your hands. Those delicate, sensitive hands that we use for absolutely everything. Just think about your life without hands for a second. Hand protection is the most important part of your protective gear after your helmet. If you can only afford two items of protective gear it must be the helmet and gloves
Have crashed many times, and my gear has taken the hit every time. The one time I wasn't wearing gloves when I came off, it left my hand in a bit of a mess, and that was barely over walking speed.
My dailies are RevIt! Dirt 3 gloves. They're like the Striker 3 but with more armor - basically the Revit version of Yam's Taichi street gloves. Super breathable, palm-heel striker, armor over every finger joint plus a big Gixxer-bro knuckle duster for the ladies. The gloves were a bit stiff at first, but it didn't take long for them to conform to my hands. The cuffs go a little ways up the wrist, just enough that your jacket cuffs can be tightened down over them.
Helmet first, gloves 2nd, Natural instinct is to slap you hands down. I have the scars. Hand damage if bad enough can ruin your life.
Many many years ago I was a dude who didn't ride gloves. One lovely mid-summer day here in Vegas while riding my cbr600F2 (bitd baby) my left hand was actually BURNED from pulling the clutch lever by the time I got to my destination. It was about 115 degrees that day.
i personally LOVE gloves, imo it's one of the coolest parts of motorcycle gear. I always ride with AT LEAST gloves, helmet and high motorcycle boots.
I put on my full gear today and actually it took me like 30 minutes 😂😂 at the end of it I was like: yes, it’s like putting on a knight armor for the battle ground and damn thats a extra weight to handle but at the end our body isn’t made for bike accidents so better be protected 🤷♂️
To be honest, riding in full gear gives me much more confidence than without, it feels like a protective shell. I still ride a 50cc moped, but since i started taking motorcycle lessons (almost have my license, just not yet) i’ve been at least wearing my jacket when going to places. If i ride without it, its like driving a car without your seatbelt. Same story for the gloves. I used ski gloves at first, and no gloves in summer. I now have a pair of good winter gloves and a pair of midseason gloves.
I have already been hit by a car at 25~30kph, t boned, whilst hitting the ground it messed my knees up for quite a while. Im all good now, but man, that hurted like hell. Definitely learned something that day.

For Christmas my sister got me a pair of HDMC perforated leather gloves. Yes I wear then on my Suzuki 😆 they're comfy and make me feel protected. No hard protection though.
When I was young I took a spill and my hand went knuckles down on the right side of my body. It scraped a good amount of the protective material off my glove and I moved my hand rather quickly away.
If I didn’t have those gloves my right hand would probably not be the 100% use of it I have today.

I have 2 different pairs of gloves. Can't recall brand and model at the moment. My warm weather gloves are similar to Yam's not-track day gloves. Breathable yet with beefy protection. Cold weather is pretty much the same but with less breathability but more of a gauntlet type.

in my experience for not wearing gloves I hit a bee and I got stung, so from that day till now I'm wearing gloves wherever I go with my bike. hahahaha

No matter how hot it is and how hard I'm squidding, I always wear at least helmet, gloves, and proper shoes. It's not that expensive and it's worth it.

As a trauma physician, I see the worst of the worst. Crashing in the dirt on a dirt bike completely different vs crashing a bike on street. Dirt bike riding occurs on forgiving dirt and bushes. Asphalt is slippery at high speeds. So many rigid, non flexible items along road ways. Bones and muscles much easier to repair vs internal bleeding bleed. Brain, heart, liver, spleen, intestines are similar to tethered water balloons. These structure move, bounce, and twist causing tearing and bruising. I wear full gear with air bag when I ride on the street. All my bikes have stability control hidden in the background just in case. I have been riding over 50 years and raced professionally when I was young. You want to stay away from my ER.

Any glove is better than no glove. I loved the light minimalist summer gloves, but last week I had a wasp in my jacket sleeve entering by the small gap around my wrist. The wasp was really upset and made sure I was aware....My next glove will be covering the jacket sleeves. I may still meet upset wasps...I just want them to be OUT of my clothes
When you fall, walking, running, off a ladder, off a bike, what you do you instinctually put out in front of you to try to catch yourself?
Gloves... sliders are a must. That hand goes down and ends up gripping the pavement instead of sliding... you have broken bones. Those knuckles don't like junebugs or small rocks hitting them when at highway speeds.
those plastic pucks are so you don't snap your wrist. If you don't have those, if you just have leather or something and your hand takes your weight during a speedy dismount on asphalt, the friction is going to cause your palm to stick while the rest of your mass moves forward at a much higher velocity. Snapping your wrist. Used to be an incredibly common injury among motorcycle riders until they figured that you need something to slide on.

I wear nice leather gloves on my sport bike but wear thinner dirt bike gloves on my Honda Grom. I crashed at 20 mph coming down from a wheelie and also slipped on gravel (sorta pushing the limits) and I broke my hand both times. ZERO road rash which was great but no actual hand support. Choose your gloves with your risks you're willing to take for more or less comfort.
My daily commute gloves is an mx pair, but after watching this I’m going to start using a leather dry rider pair I have.
I’m totally guilty of not wearing enough gear - basically because of the heat (North Queensland Australia). Gear manufacturers, or at least local stores, do a crap job of supplying gear that cool enough. Lightest protective ride shirt only available in dark black. I’m rethinking all this as I’m toying with the idea of buying a bigger bike again and starting to do some on and off road touring.

I can't wear leather due to being allergic to a tanning material that is commonly used called chromium. I can not find a good set of summer gloves that has wrist sliders and knuckle protection. There are a ton of synthetic materials that outperform leather so I do not understand why there is not a good protecting glove that I can wear.

Funny you guys mentioned hands being so important after basically shaming people into not wearing gauntlets for daily gear. There have been a lot of friends/people ask me about what bike I recommend, what gear, and how to go about starting to ride and I always tell them to not cheap out on a helmet and pair of gauntlets. I’ve crashed 3 times in 10 years and don’t want to know what my hands would be like right now if I hadn’t, especially after fracturing my wrist on the 2nd crash (including skull fracture and tbi). I know we have different experiences but I love gauntlets for their look and their protection, so they’re a must in my eyes.
You can get real dirt bike gloves and they aren't like street bike gloves but with little patting you will be fine
I'm going for Knox Handroid Mk4. There is also a pod version (short cuff). Fantastic protection though probably not enough ventilation for Texas. Looks great (my opinion) but maybe not for everyone. A love/hate appearance.
I remember watching a MotoAmerica qualifying race where the rider went down at triple digit speeds with his hand trapped under the bike. It ground through the titanium knuckle protector and into skin. It did some decent damage but he was out racing the next day

So here it comes:
Rev’it Chevak (GTX) - using it in winter time. Very thick glove. I use it at temprature of 0 - 10 Celcius
Alpinestar Smx - mid seasson. Thinner but still warm enough to ride during spring season nice for 10-20 celcius
Rev’it (not sure about type anymore but looks like these) Fly - my summer gloves and my favorites. Very good feel, lots of air. I use it at 20 Celcius and up.
I'm guessing bicycle gloves would fall into category 1. Definitely not designed for high speed falls on hard surfaces.

Remember, any gloves are better than no gloves at all, really goes for all protective equipment on a motorcycle, 100$ helmet is better than no helmet
Quick helmet story: I knew a guy back in the 70s that bought one of those cheapo sparkly open face helmets at an auto parts store. We rode over the mountain on dirt and down two remote tavern. He hung his new helmet on the handlebar of his dirtbike. It fell off and cracked. That dummy was thrilled when the store gave him a brand new exact replacement🤦🏻♂️

The HJC or LS2 $100 helmets are ECE rated and will protect your skull from cracking open. There's absolutely no reason not to wear a helmet. The gloves are even cheaper.

I had a 115 MPH tank slapper on my TL1000s back in '98. Went down hard. T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. Helmet saved my life. No broken bones, but I had a shit ton of road rash, and my hands got it pretty bad. It sucked.
I don't always learn my lesson, but when I do, you can bet I learned it the hard way!

Have never not worn gloves on a bike. Agree with Yam on feel through the glove, it's the main reason I don't wear the liners on my winter gauntlets. Gives up too much feel.
My biggest problem is arthritis. Just got back into motorcycling after 20 years. Been using my hands a lot for work, and now I learn that anything that compresses my knuckles results in days of pain. I have LONG, SKINNY hands. I had to settle for manufacturers that use actual numbered glove sizing, and the gloves that don't compress my knuckles are WAY oversized for my hand width. I got some elkskin gloves from Aerostich and they're okay, but I'll have to sew in some Velcro cinchers to keep them on my hands. The supplier is Geier, a glove maker out of Centralia, Washington. I recommend getting their actual elkskin roper gloves from the source. You can't buy direct, unfortunately, but they're top notch. I wear a size 13. I've tried on a pair of 12's and the thickness and build make much more sense than the Aerostich version. Looking forward to getting an actual size 13 in the plain roper glove.
Windburn, rocks, and bugs are no joke. Not to mention in case of a fall. Wear gloves. If you don't, your brains as smooth as butter.
