How to Install Shiplap Panelling | This Old House

- Everyone is covering their walls with shiplap. It’s the hottest wall covering. The Arlington homeowners love it too and want to finish the third floor with it. Kevin O’Connor finds Tom Silva installing shiplap in the office. But Tom has a not so big secret. Shiplap has been around for a long time.

Kevin O’Connor checks on the progress throughout the Arlington house on his way up to the third floor where Tom Silva is working on shiplap paneling. Tom shows Kevin what a true shiplap joint looks like. The boards have overlapping joints on both sides and over time a small reveal between the boards is created as they shrink. This kind of siding has been around for a long time and is seen on barns and sheds. There are other ways of creating the same shiplap look. For this project, Tom is using 1x8 stock butted up against one another. First the wall is covered with tar paper so if the boards shrink the insulation won’t show through the crack. He marks the top of the board on the tar paper on each side and snaps a chalk line. They continue cutting and nailing in the pieces all the way up the ceiling.

Ugh... Entitled homeowners. "We want shiplap, I read it's really popular. But we don't want it to look like shiplap." In the attic space because you're gonna spend so much time up there.
Seriously, the owners had like the best contractor to do that entire room and they cheaped out on the tongue and grove.
Well it isn't Tommy's fault, that's what they chose and that's what the get!
Lmao it's like 12 feet of uneven wall and they arent using tongue and groove. Great job homeowners, I'm sure your snootiness was worth the end result lol.

Should’ve just used MDF shiplap if you didn’t like the knots… The plain 1x with no joinery and just butted together looks horrible

I just can't understand some people. I just remodeled a home and when we started taking the walls down we found the previous owners put drywall and wall paper over some beautiful old growth shiplap. House was built in the late 1800s, found and saved some amazing wood from that house.
What would you do to cover paneling? Is there a very thin board - so the window casing and door casings dont have to be removed and replaced? The house i just bought has paneling in every single room!
Somebody send help! Tom and Kevin are trapped in a giant IKEA closet!
If you're going to paint it, and especially if it's simply going to be butted up to each other, why not use mdf and thus lower the chance it will swell/shrink and cause gaps?
I guess the homeowner if the boss, but by electing for a sort of middle ground between shiplap and plasterboard, they seem to have fallen between two stools aesthetically. Looks kinda jarring to me, but perhaps I'm in the minority.
No, that end result was terrible.
What size nails did you use?
Did you measure the ceiling and buy boards that were going to fit or did you rip the last board or did you rip all of them so they would be the same size?

I just bought a house with a shiplap ceiling…their is only bats of insulation not spray foam or any plastic under the shiplap. I was wondering if this could cause any issues? All i have seen is spray foam or bats with plastic under the shiplap and mine has neither only the regular insulation.
I’m confused why they didn’t use premium pre primed shiplap boards. They look just like the ones they used with no knots but they have the appropriate nickel gap. Home Depot has mass quantity right in the shelf. I use it often in flip houses.
Yeah I stopped reading after I found out that you get your lumber at Home Depot

@@AlMai222 hahahaha! Premium ship lap boards are manufactured by few and are straight and even premium grade right off the shelf. I can’t make an hour drive every time I need stuff for repairs. I’m a flipper not a builder. I doubt the house will fall in over some esthetic wood decoration.

Looks ugly, Owners don't know squat, but they are paying for their mistakes twice. Install and resale value. Should've just done drywall.
Seriously, this is terrible, it basically looks the same as drywall at probably 10 times the cost.

I'm curious do physics change when it comes to hanging it on a ceiling or wall?. Does expansion and contraction not apply?

if the homeowners wanted to be tight they should have just gone for plasterboard, would have looked a lot better than what they ended up with, who expects no knots with that amount of wood, i take it they live on a different planet where trees have no branches.
1. if you can do the entire length with single boards, why did you take the extra time to create butt joints? and 2. is there zero issue with board shrinkage/expansion?
It's such a common and MAJOR issue, most manufacturers recommend painting the wall or joints a dark color before installing because of shrinkage/expansion.
you can barley notice the wood painted white like that why not just put plaster like the walls.
I thought code requires 1/2 inch gypsum over spray foam insulation for fire safety..I think you can put shiplap directly over fiberglass or mineral wool though..
What do you do with those nail holes?
Tommy is also a general contractor. He knows what the miniature is. Tommy is old school, and he is new school at the same time.
I have a house built in the 1920s with shiplap ceilings. I have recently removed attic insulation because rat dropping and dust was falling through the cracks in the ceiling. I found there is no barrier between ceiling wood and attic. NOW I don't know what kinda of barrier, if any, to place in attic and what kind of insulation. Please help anyone. I am in Biloxi, MS, very humid area .03 miles from beach
#1 clear pine OK but don't paint it. Could have used MDF. Nickle gap and finish with something that shows the grain. ( I think knots add character to wood ). Their house / their money Thanks all and take care

I just purchased a home built in 1945. It is all hardwood framing, floors, and shiplap on the exterior and interior walls. Unfortunately the house was "updated" years ago, with drywall, particle board, and wallpaper covering the shiplap on the interior walls. Two layers of linoleum flooring covering the hardwood floors, with carpet on top. And shingle siding on the exterior.
I'm going to peel off decades of "updates" to restore the shiplap, and these homeowners wanted shiplap, but didn't want it to look like shiplap. 🤦🏼♂️
Tommy just know’s how to do things, because he talks to craftspeople he knows.
he's been in the carpentry bussiness since diapers. His grandfather and father were both carpenters. at 71 he knows just about all the tricks there are.
So in the end they went with the most boring option that doesn't even look like timber🤔😴😴

Panels are not flat like ship lap,nickel gap.
Looks untidy. Just drywall it and be done with it.
So, no tongue/grove or lap to hold the boards even, no shadow line from any v-grove or lap gap and nail holes exposed that need to be dressed... a wall that looks like crud IMHO. Poor move by the owners... and not the fault of the team installing. They should have just put up drywall.
sooooo the video is called "how to install shiplap", but it really should be "how to install something BESIDES shiplap"!

Not a fan of that look at all and when that dries a bit the gaps it will create.. To each their own I guess

Homeowner made a really bad decision. Didn’t really see the point of it in the end.
Why no vapour barrier? Because of closed cell foam? Because of tar paper? And will that foam outgass for a long period of time? Would like to hear from some experts.
Spray foam is a vapor barrier if you have 3 inches of it

What’s the point to that sort of finish? It just looks weird because it’s almost perfect, but not quite. Go either with cheap and smooth drywall or with a more expensive and more textured material! This is the worst of both worlds!
