Matt: “Thankfully most of you have dark vision...”
Taliesin: “heavy sigh”
*Literally anything happens*
Taliesin: "heavy sigh"
As someone who's currently playing as a centaur and a loxodon respectively in two different campaigns... I felt that.
he should have played a warlock and taken devil's sight
Krampus the Christmas Devils
@@Leto_0 That's a little much. Percival, as a human, is the only one in the group who can not see. So despite Matt doing his best to not single him out the truth remains and it has got to sting.
Scanlan: "Lets make everyone look like Vax and Vex"
Vax and Vex: "Wow that sounds awesome!!"
*five minutes later when Scanlan casts Seeming*
Vax: *Looks at his girlfriend who now looks like his sister*
Vex: *Looks at her soon to be boyfriend who now looks like her brother*
Vax and Vex: We've made a mistake
@Quinn I still can’t wait to see trinket Percy in the animated series 😂
I loved it when Percy said “sister.” Then Vex started wanting to vomit. Lol.
Percy, upon recognising his girlfriend's palpable discomfort: *amps the awkwardness up times twenty by referring to her as his sister.* Percy is a little shit and a bastard man and I love him.
@@wolvo5441 I wish
It makes it worse that out of the other "Vax"s Percy is the only one that would be about the same height. Unless Scanlan staggered their heights when he cast seeming to improve the russian doll effect.
i love it when Matt gets weird with an npc. watching the cast get creeped out is the best
And I don't think that character was supposed to be "creepy," but the party was slightly unnerved by him so Matt amped it up to mess with them, and it's been my favorite character development by far.
@@averagegirl7113 according to talks machina he wasn't even a planned NPC. Matt made him up on the spot. Which is even crazier
Even better when you find out both these NPC’s where completely improvised by Matt last episode. He confirmed that he came up with both on the fly.
@@averagegirl7113 Matt tried to make him unique but if you've ever played Dragon Age he sounds like a Tranquil. A person lobotomized in order to control their magic. And yes I can see how he doubled down on in.
Oh boy, you must love c3
"(awful yet great impression of bagpipes)"
Whoever writes these subtitles deserves the biggest raise in history.
For real lmao
Great impression, therefore awful, of bagpipes
I believe I've heard the Liam actually does this shortly after shooting
it's definitely unique and personal and very very specific... im so glad potentially deaf people or people who have to watch in silence for whatever reason get the full experience of voice actors with no sound.
The subtitles are a humor all on their own, and I'm so glad they're here 😂
Taliesin : I'm making a super long name for my character.
Matt : Hold my beer.
That efreet had all the titles
He didn't make it. It's D&D cannon. Search for Marrake al-Hariq. The dude has like 100 titles, it's crazy.
@@Jujubizin Honestly 50% Matt giving them more time to decide what to give and 50% just to have an excuse to show that he actually pulled up the damn thing
@@Memokkeen hahahahhahaha
Rewatching the first campaign, because boredom and waiting for third campaign to emerge. EPIPHANY... at around 2 hours 40 minutes in, Pumat Sol was conceived in Matt's brain... True Genius backpacking on the sextuplet idea with a twist.
I would watch 3 hours of Pike teaching Grog to read.
that would only get you to "F" in the alphabet
And that's on the natural 20 side of almost every letter...
Best part of the episode!
I imagine that this would be like Teletubbies or Banana's in Pajamas or really anything that's the kind of show meant for Toddlers... I'd watch it.

Scanlan: "Alright, I see how it is... Hold my over-sized tankard!" **gambles away everybody's freedom in a cardgame he's never played**
By one. Every. Single. Time. Even in the extra game that didn’t matter.
@@eggularbagel But this is Vox Machina we're talking about. You know those items would have never even been thought of otherwise. I honestly think Matt put that sequence in to trim some of the party's magical item bloat
@@eggularbagel What they gave away was like chump change compared to what the fortune they still have. Hell, what they got over 100k worth of gold from Vorugal's hoard alone.

Poor Larkin. I really hope he makes it home.
I forget who Larkin is and it's too far back to rewatch it lol
@@mydumbhandlename Larkin was a dragon four episodes ago. Or the other way around... Vax didn't catch on and I'm not sure they ever explained it to him in-character.
@@mydumbhandlename The green dragon of the chroma conclave "Ryshawn" has the ability change its form into people and during the fight with "Volrugard" the white dragon , Ryshawn took the form of Larkin(a dwarf fighter). Ryshawn took this form to prevent the "Volrugard" from learning of her betrayal. Before the fight started "Larkin" shows up out of nowhere and everybody realizes that this is Ryshawn in disguise. Just to mess with Matt, Sam/Scalan pretends to not catch on and make a big stink about some random dwarf showing up and how suspicious it is. But the rest of the party in character tells him its "ryshawn" and he needs to stop bringing attention to her. Then the group goes into Scanlan's Manson for one final planing session before they pull the trigger on this fight, when out of nowhere Liam/Vax says the greatest line ever "what are we going to do when our green friend shows up". This is immediately meet by a look of bewilderment by the whole group and they quickly realize that Liam had completely missed out on the whole Larkin being Ryshawn and began to joke around with him. Liam admitting he was spacing out deciding to lean into the joke and after the fight with "Volrugard" ,which resulted in "Ryshawn" dispelling her previous form of "Larkin" and taking on the full dragon form, he joked around about their missing Dwarf friend. He even went so far as to role play with Pike about forming a search party for "Larkin" in the following episode thus the "Larkin Watch" was born.

Seeing Grog / Travis so badly want to learn to read made me warm inside.
James Brooks if only scan lan was there, he'd have a perfect inspiration aong for the int check:
"Spell your name, spell your name..." (in the tune of 'say my name' by Destiny's Child)
The saddest and cutest part of the episode
Sam could've just as well assisted in the int check on top of giving the inspiration by singing the ABC song.

Edit: Nevermind, found it. (2:56:00 - Pike Teaching Grog)
It is the sweetest thing I've ever seen in this show.
Lmao. Now Vex and Vax know how Percy and Cassandra felt when they used Seeming to trick the Briarwoods.
Nope, not even close, way worse
Percy-"We dont have that much money"
*Grog looking in the bag of holding with 150,000 gp in it*
I always love when Ashley is there. The whole group in game and out of game are just happy she is there and it just makes everything wholesome :)
So true. Ashley is often quite, but the group seems more complete when she is there.
A warning for people watching the G&S CR playlist:
Don't watch the next video, Talks Machina Critmas, in the order it's listed. It's actually TM #6 and takes place after episode 79 (Thordak). It includes a lot of spoilers for that episode. Learn from my mistakes!

VoixMortelle much appreciated!
Wow, glad I skipped that. Was thinking about going back and watching it, guess I'll hold off. Thank you for that.

You're amazing
16:28, the party's reactions to Matt saying "you did not establish [a safety word]"
Liam: going through notes to avoid eye contact
Laura: vicious laughter
Ashley: Pitiful laughter
Travis: crying into mug out of fear
Sam: Studying notes to avoid eye contact
Tal: Pitiful but delighted laughter
Marisha: (looking at Matt) Yeah that's my freak
So happy someone brought up marisha's "Looky Look"

It took me a moment to realize Liam's "Larkin Watch" shirt was Critical Role related. Poor dwarf. I wonder where he ended up... 😉🤭
probably ended up dead slain by some group of killers :) :)
Some random group of 6 or 7 murder hobos killed him
What?! But he was going to help them kill dragons! He must have been sick...
This is an underrated comment.
Hey guys, I think Larkin MIGHT be a dragon... idk insight or some such
Matt ‘You see two young boys.’
Sam *instantly plots how to obtain the fire plane’s finest headgear.*
Only Sam could turn some variation of, "come here little boy" into, "I'll give you way too much money to find me the coolest hat in the city".
The fact that Matt plot a revenge after he prepared a whole game for the cassino visit and they decided not to play thoooooo LMAO i remember him getting really excited when they were about to play and then they just didn’t want to and later on he made them play for a vestige and betting their lives OMFG i love his dark mind
Sam got so crushed when he got scammed and then lost money that he wasn't even willing to entertain any more casino games and Matt's just like "oh you're gonna play, Sam..."
I actually felt bad for Matt when no one wanted to play the games, because you can tell he spent a fair amount of time thinking them up.
They chose to gamble. They could have simply told the truth. They want the armor and are willing to trade for it. The fire giant may have still wanted the pitfiend's head as the price, but the process of getting to it would have been different. Look how successful they were the one time they were upfront and truthful the entire time. Their own refusal to be honest is their undoing. It is their fault they get into the messes they do.
@@Lucifronzthe dice game had such terrible odds though. 1 in 6 chance to double your money. And if you lose you can double your bet for similar odds.
Seriously, why is Sam always surprised when they look to him to be the face of the group? Dude's the only Charisma caster with ridiculous Persuasion and Deception modifiers.
True, but they do it cause Marisha is supposed to act as a wise leader, but she lacks the skill to do so, and among everyone in the group, Sam is the most creative of the group.
V. Khat Or it's because he has the highest charisma and has skills in both Persuasion and Deception which makes his roles, on average, higher than everyone else with a larger variety of spells that work in and out of combat.
High charisma the bards lament
He's probably surprised they're going to actually let him do his job instead of flubbing through a disasterpiece of bad improv and low rolls by someone with poor charisma.
Vax is paladin in this episode, so he is also charisma caster, too. Vex tries to haggle all the prices of anything, which is persuasion, too. Not to mention, not everyone they come in contact with is exactly "sweet" to gnomes. Obviously hes the smart choice to be the face, but thats why we're watching, and not playing.
Vex and Vax being disgusted that Percy and Kiki look like their sibling is amazing
Sam just HAS to keep 1-upping himself with this loot crate ad reads
IMVADER2 to bad he can't 1 up his gambling roles
Matthew Thomas "everyone in that tavern simultaneously ohhhhhhhhh-ing"
Matthew Thomas ohh ouch that smarts. 😰😰😰😰
Might need to call Pike for that one.

@@uli11 ikr? Marisha is adorable, the cast is just the best
@@joelrobinson5457that's what's so confusing to me. People judge the cast *so so harshly* for playing sub optimally or making mistakes .... that's not the point? They aren't here to show the perfect way to play dnd, they are just a group of best friends who just wanted to play dnd together. And we get a peek behind the curtains into that dynamic while enjoying the story they create together- flaws and all.
And i love that. To me the thing that makes this all work is that the cast are dramatically different, unafraid to just be themselves with each other, and to make it all work to backdrop the game. The people getting hung up on the rules of the game are missing the point.
Watching Marisha talk as Keyleth in any kind of negotiations always leaves me stressed, both sympathetically and otherwise.

Technically it's all his title. His name *is* shorter than Percy's!
@@KickyFut Not a D&D player but isn't the the sultan of the city of Brass an actual D&D character? If that's the case then kudos to Matt for bringing another existing entity that isn't a deity or fiend.
Not sure I understand... many of the characters in the City of Brass are NPC's that are neither deity nor fiend... Or are you asking if someone actually plays as the sultan? That I don't know...but I think the sultan is an Efreet.
@@KickyFut That's what I'm referring to. The sultan is an Efreet who has appeared in established D&D lore. I know there are well known fiends(devils and demons) and deities who have a presence in the universe where Exandria resides, but I'm certain that other established higher powers tend to pop up from time to time.
39:02 Laura double face palming at Marisha blowing her cover as soon as she opens her mouth ! LMAO
This furthers my theory that getting made fun of for owning a wine aerator has turned Sam down the path of the dark side. Slowly driving his friends mad with his ads
I knew all these guys were talented actors, but the "Dust Bowl" skit at the beginning just really sunk that in. That was fantastic. :p
3:13:31 I could not stop laughing at scanlans reaction timing when he heard "two young boys" 😂😂
"You're an idiot and I'm very proud of you." I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!
Watching this episode during a historic heat wave is helping me really feel the atmosphere of the setting. Been making real life con checks for the last couple days.
Same. July 2022
We had to go through a heatwave it got up to 35°
@@monicatruong1223 Yeah that's rough. Once it gets north of 34 degrees, it starts to get completely, and utterly unbearable. At the time of my comment, the heat was hovering between 35-37 degrees for the week. It was so miserable. When you can't get a break during the night, it just makes a person want to sit down, and cry. I don't know how people deal with that regularly.
@@billbill3915 luckily it was that hot for like one day and we have a basement but past 25° it’s not fun it’s too hot to do anything
@@monicatruong1223 Yeah, I fuckin' hate summer. Never used to, but now it's hot as shit every year thanks to global warming. I'm all about spring/autumn/winter now.
Matt: "for all you critters under 35..."
I resent that, I was 23 when this came out and loved American Tale growing up
I’m 15 and I was literally humming no cats in America before I watched this. Weird coincidence.
My heart broke when Grog's knowledge didn't stay. :( I will never trust Mercer again.

Vox Machina: "We are looking for a fire giant who won an armor set via a card game"
Matt:"There are 3 fire giants in the whole city"
Vox Machina goes to the first fire giant and pays 5 enchanted items to find out which of the other 2 has it.
I mean not like they could have found it out themselves in 5 min but ok :D
Dino not to mention Laura already searched for it outside and discovered it wasn't there
Didn't the giant threaten them? Or was it the other one?
Brooke Corbyn - Yeah, I dunno why you wouldn't just keep walking at that point.
This was a way for Matt to unload some of the excess items they keep trucking around without giving them anymore more money (since they have enough right now to fund Whitestone for a year).
There was a whole lot of poor decision making in this episode, to be fair. It pales in the face of "sure, I'll sell my friends on the basis of a few straight dice rolls" 😉
An animation of Grog learning to spell is what got me to start watching the series. I've been looking forward to getting to this part for so long. Although it's during a much more serious situation than I would have guessed, it's still hilarious.
Pike teaching Grog the alphabet is the cutest thing ever.
1."Chuckle? Cackle? Shackle? Charcoal." A bunch of parrots we have here.
2. Where is the sextuplet fan art? I want to see it now.

I came back just to see the radioplay again. Sam is an amazing human being.
He seems to one up himself every week.
Wonderer Traveler Yeah, can't wait for tonight!
I don't feel the same way at all.
Spacecookie You don't like Sam?
Willem Maas
I'm not sure about Sam, but I really don't like his depiction of Scanlan. What an awful character. I think quite a bit of Sam makes Scanlan who he is as usually happens when people roleplay a character..
I love seeing how different DMs portray different races to tell their respective stories. Matt makes fire giants antagonists, meanwhile I'm in a campaign where my DM has them as the protectors and allies of my character's dwarves clan. I love seeing the broad range of creativity!
I think RAW they are lawful evil which is probably why Matt chose to portray them that way.
Like any society, their actions depend upon their leadership. So, really anything is feasible if you think about it. As long as the leadership is powerful and effective, that is.
In this case, they seem to simply be at a disadvantage and are barely survivors, whereas many are aligned with Thordak outside of the Fire Plane for whatever reasons I wasn't really paying enough attention to discern.
It's the basis for the entirety of the Chaotic Evil alignment, in a way, as most within this respect *only* power and revel in destruction. Lawful Evil creatures are probably much easier to manipulate and control if you know their motivations and can convince them you're working towards them. But that can really be said for anyone. Sort of a vague statement I just made there, but you get the point.
-Raishan tells them that fire giants reforged the Elemental Crystal
-Raishan tells them Thordak befriended the fire giants
-A social upset in the city is mentioned
-Matt reminds them that fire giants take pride in their crafting
Me (screaming): Take the hint!! Argh....
What hint?
OH DEAR GOD! It didn't accure to me until I saw the comment
Spoilers
Are you talking about the eggs
Yo what's the hint
@@animaljam4385 As i see the situation, they were in contact with fire giants that had contact with thordak. Probably even the one that modified the crystal. "They take pride in their work" is gm-code for "you can get them to brag about it and figure out its weakness"

Bit of a necro post, but I’d argue that’s actually pretty in character. Most of the engineers I work with tend to relay their projects as though everyone is as familiar with the math and design principles they’re building on even if some part of their mind is fully aware that isn’t the case.
Ashley: (awful yet great impression of bagpipes)
omg this is amazing, props to whoever did the closed caption
As Keyleth and Pike were carrying the "coin" all I could think of was Ross saying "Pivot... Pivot..." 🤣🤣
2:32:00 For whatever reason Ashley's whispered "Do you want a tootsie roll?" was so clear over my audio.
😂 Looked to see if anyone else noticed this. Or Travis just beforehand saying “I really wish I had a roll of ritz crackers right now”
how has no one commented about scanlan being the gerbil to fire giants? that's hilarious
I switched from the podcast and control+F-ed the word gerbil just to see who commented on that and up-vote them. "In this case, you would be the gerbil" is one of the funniest asides I've heard in the show so far. I laughed for a solid 30 seconds.
Is there a former joke about Scanlan with a gerbil I've missed?

I hope I'm not the only one frantically looking up stats for a Pit Fiend
Oh when they first mentioned pit fiend I grabbed my Monster Manual and thought "Oh damn..."
BlazeShepard757 Iui
Well they just fought an ancient white dragon which has an equal challenge rating but with the benefit of flight, while simultaneously fighting a Goristro which is nearly the same challenge rating. The scary thing however, is I don't think a single monster has been its minimum challenge rating in all of Critical Role. Matt has pretty much always beefed them up.
That's because the given challenge rating is for a group of four adventurers of that level. For this group of seven, you need to bump up the CR by at least 2 or so it was for 3.5. Either way, even a being as powerful as a Pit Fiend would have troubles against this big of a group of powerful figures.
No doubt, no doubt. Was kinda my point, I do the same thing with the party of seven I DM for. It seems most of my work as a DM comes from counting experience points and balancing enemies and magic. Roleplaying and storytelling just comes effortlessly after all that number crunching. lol
I love how they always take forever to plan everything and then it goes to crap within 2 minutes lol. I'm still watching them plan their 6 twins plans but I bet it's going to fail.
Senokir is up there with Pumat and Artagan as a character who can *only* be voiced by Matt in the animated series.
“So, plan A which is certainly to fail, or...”
“Plan A!”
"Did she... Use the magic?!" I could not breathe I had to watch this scene like eight times. Bless Scanlan and Sam. XDDD
This is the first episode where it seems grog (Travis) is actually sad that grog can't read.

Next episode is going to be tense. Extra money says one of them gets it next week. I actually would like to see new characters. :) That would be fun
Based on this episode I think Vox MAchina really needs a reminder that it is not always going their way.
They were really ...simpleminded this episode. "Who neds a good plan? Will be fine like alwas"
The easy kill on the balck dragon and killing a white dragon and a Goristro with almost no trouble really went to their heads.
They need a wake-up call.
Pit fiends are one of the most powerful monsters in dungeons and dragons they are one of the few creatures that get 4 attacks per turn +fear aura.
I'd be amazed if no one dies then going by what someone has said in this comment thread
Rhys Causon
My prediction is that, if they are lucky, either scanlan or someone that acts before the pit fiend will get a whack of 4 attacks, (maybe even with advantage) and that seeing one character being TKO'ed makes them retreat immediatley.
I of course do not know how mean Matt is, if he focuses on one character the first round or not.
It took me 17 minutes of staring at Liam's shirt to get the joke...Hope they find him soon... :(
I needed your comment to get it... xD
Matt: its still a mansion
Liam in campaign 2: nah its a tower with 9 sides and 9 floors
Late to the party but I’m pretty sure that’s a different spell. Scalan casts “Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion” which is a 7th level spell. Caleb, for the most part casts or upcasts the 3rd level spell “Galder’s Tower.”
@@LseerLables no it's magnificent mansion. The thing that's important is just the mansion spell gives u X amount of space to fill as u wish. Liam spent a lot of time designing the tower to fit that space
